I would say there's a place and time to argue with your wife but saying that she cannot have lyrics available is just an opinion and her opinion is just as valid as yours. I would have recommended letting her read all the lyrics first and then proceed with the reaction. Another good option is to just press the CC button on the button right corner of the player and use official subtitles (closed captions) for automatically time sync'd lyrics.

As requested by your wife here again some backstory of our Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen. She is the third and present singer of Nightwish and considered the best and most versatile female singer of our time. She joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 17. My favourite song is 'Energize Me'. They made a very beautiful music video out of this. After Forever disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song, such as from full operatic to serious growls in seconds. The songs 'Disdain' and 'Wild Card' are good examples. September 2012 came the call from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the American Tour as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist (there is a documentary made of this world tour ('Please learn the setlist in 48 hours'). The lyrics of the songs of Nightwish are very poetic and the music as a whole is challenging, but Floor pulled it off and she stayed for the whole world tour, culminating in this iconic Wacken 2013 Open Air festival. It was obvious that the combination Nightwish and Floor Jansen was made in Walhalla, so she became a permanent member of the band in 2013 as the relationship with Annette and the band was strained even before she became ill. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp' for a couple of years, but it became clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so Revamp disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived in the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died' is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on KZread. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads slienced and in awe, watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa'. And to see her in full opera mode watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered KZread in the last year and uploaded many interesting videos on her channel. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses and so much more. Her 'Fan Friday' videos are hilarious. She even made a video reacting to herself performing this at Wacken. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band 'Sabaton'); daughter Freja (just turned 4 years); a horse and pony; a dog and 3 cats, she found this.

Well, Floor is a great and versitile singer, but that really isn't unique. There are other singers with the same qualities that just didn't have the fortune to become the lead singer of a world-famous band. The real genius behind Nightwish is Tuomas Holopainen.

It's classed as symphonic metal they use a real orchestra to record a backing track, the flaming bulls head is the symbol for the Wacken festival. And yes, dive into the lyrics but you will have to make your own interpretation as they are never explained by the writer the keyboard player Tuomas.

From what I’ve gathered, and my impression as a writer myself, I believe this song is absolutely about Tarja. I know some don’t like to see Toumas in this light, but it’s something many men (and women) have experienced. I’m convinced Toumas was in love with, or essentially obsessed with Tarja. They may or may not have had a rendezvous or two, but I think he saw her as the perfect woman for him, being from the same hometown, then in his band, a deep musical connection and personal connection. She’s gorgeous, with a gorgeous voice and great musical aptitude. Much for a composer to be attracted to. And we tend to be obsessive personality types, which enables us to focus so intensely on a song to its completion. I’m sure he imagined her as his soulmate, and envisioned their future as making beautiful music together and traveling the world, etc. But then came Marcelo, first shattering the dream, drawing her attention from the band, and then becoming her manager and creating a wedge between her and both the band, and Toumas. The extreme response in both the open letter to Tarja, and the lyrics of “Poet and the Pendulum” tell me it was more than just a band thing. Other songs also seem to be expressions of this young love obsession and the turmoil around it. Often these experiences are the best primers for great songs because there is such intense passion, longing, pain, and cauldron of mixed emotions there. Totally not judging him, but rather fully relate to this, and I love that he expressed it in some of the most amazing songs ever written.

You guys made me laugh as my wife and I have had the same schtick going for close to 48 years. Sarah should know that Ghost Love Score is just the tip of the Nightwish iceberg. One interpretation for this song is that it is about a person loving another while the object of that love is totally unaware, which is the "Ghost" part of it. Officially Nightwish is considered symphonic metal, but with their latest album Human:||:Nature, they're basically a genre in their own right.

Thanks for the reaction! Toumas lyrics are always poetic written and have a deeper meaning. But it's not always known, sometimes you can figure it out, sometimes not. Toumas has told in interviews what some song are about. But the important thing is what the lyrics make YOU feel. This song I believe is about unanswered love, love that can not be. It's hard to hear in this live version but the quire is singing (from my memory): "My fall will be for you My love will be in you If you be the one to cut me, I will bleed forever." Regards from Sweden Ulf

The thing with Nightwish lyrics is they’re very poetic in nature, with layer upon layer of storytelling and subjective meaning. Nightwish can be appreciated in the first listening, absolutely, but trying to comprehend and truly understand a piece on the first listen is nigh on impossible. XD the more you listen to one of their songs, the deeper the meaning you will pull out of it personally.

The only thing that we love more than someone reacting to Nightwish is when a reactor introduces someone to the band. This was awesome. BTW, the band is backed by the London symphony orchestra and the Metropolitan voices choir. So a "wall of sound" barely begins to describe it. Wacken is in Germany. 82,000 people were at this concert. The only one that truly knows what the song means is Tuomas, and he'll only say that "It means whatever you need it too"

  • @papaverweg

Yes indeed, Wacken is a village in Germany. All the symphonic music you hear (on almost every song of Nightwish is written by Tuomas (keyboards, the composer and poet of almost 95% of all NW songs) but is performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Since there’s not enough space on stage for a full live orchestra (and also couldn’t go with them on world tour for more than a year) it’s a running soundtrack pre-recorded at Angel Studios, London. This orchestra is featuring on every album NW released since ‘Once’ (except the last one Human :|: Nature which is performed by Blue Dot Orchestra). kzread.info/dash/bejne/epeszK2lhcbQiNI.html The background choir you frequently hear are the Metro Voices, a choir group also based in London. At some songs a boys soprano performed: Guy Elliott, 2nd boy soprano: Tom Williams, courtesy of the Reigate St Mary's Choir School. Child choir: Young Musicians London. And your wife is right, their lyrics took a huge part of how Tuomas likes titel his messages. (But everything has an important role into that. Every individual instrument has it’s purpose, even the interlude, the pyrotechnics, the color of lighting and the images on the screen behind the band) everything contributes to creating the correct sphere and the wanted to experience the right emotion. Sarah, tell us your favorite music style, singer or band, so we can suggest you to watch Next cause Nightwish and/or Floor can do and did performing almost every music genre you can imagine.

Toumas, "the Keyboard player" writes 80-90% of all Nightwish songs.. He sends out the initial tracks. Everybody add their character, they get together, collaborate to put together the final product... Then Toumas composes the symphonic and choir parts, works with various symphonies to record the backing tracks that are used in the live performances..

Nightwish lyrics are very poetic, so it can be hard to get the full understanding in one listen. But there are many people in the comment section that are really good at interpreting them. There are so many meaningful backstories to Nightwish songs. "Poet and the Pendulum" having the most impactful backstory (in my opinion) that you would need to read up on before listening to the song, so you can get the full experience. Also "Greatest show on earth" talking about the Evolution theory. etc. the list can go on :) Hope to have you along for the ride Sarah :) and thank you for the wonderful reaction both of you :)

If your wife is interested in lyrics she has some tough task to solve Nightwish poetry by Tuomas the keyboardist, composer and lyricist. In GLS she was trying to figure out why Floor sings long beautiful notes ”my fall will be for you...” while the lyrics go ”My fall will be for you, My love will be in you, If you be the one to cut me, I'll bleed forever” That’s the part where choir sings these lyrics, imo they are the thoughts of the singer but Floor sing out loud only this short sentence. Hope your wife takes part to your journey, she’s going to have such ear candys from Nightwish songs. Have a nice day.

Ghost Love Score is about unrequited Love. The song is a conversation between a poet and a Siren from the deep. The poet knows that fully embracing his love means surrendering himself completely to the siren. And the Siren is doing her best to entice him to join her.

Hello Mrs Tuffnuts :) Tuomas often writes very poetically so the songs can be intricate and often metaphorical. He has said he wants people to get their own meanings from his music, but this one is basically about lost love, or some think unrequited love. Yes Waken is in Germany. The band is from Finland, the lead singer is from the Netherlands, but lives in Sweden, and one more member you don't see here is from the U.K. lol

"Ghost Love Score" seems to be a mental image of a secret love. Don't let yourself be fooled, because GLS is sung by a woman. It was Tuomas Holopainen, who was composing the song, a man who was surrounded by a thousand lakes ("Land of a Thousand Lakes" is what Finnland is called in Europe) - so water related themes (Oceanborn) were very commonly used by him. Honestly I think that Tuomas was inspired by Tarja Turunen, whom he invited to become the first singer of Nightwish: "We used to swim the same moonlight waters..." (both grew up in same community "Kitee" in Finnland), "A siren from the deep came to me..."(who else than Tarja), "Forgive the adoring beast" (calling himself beast) and on and on. On account of Tarja, Tuomas imagined alot with the (unrequited) love themes (even in "Devil and Deep Dark Ocean"). Just for those who don't know of the (platonic) relationship between Tuomas and Tarja: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rGZ62cagitTOqco.html . Things became unbearable after Tarja met her husband (manager), who acted like a siamese twin of Tarja, representing rather the opposite of whom Tuomas would call a friend. Tuomas was able to pull through that by burying his yearning in "The Poet and the Pendulum" and became open minded for his Happy End (meeting his wife in 2009 and inviting Floor Jansen to his band in 2012).

Yes, this is how I understand the meaning behind the lyrics as well. The first part is about the innocent crush of a young boy turning into a unanswered, destructive passion or obsession of a grown up man in the second part. Loosing innocence is an important, reoccurring theme in many of the earlier songs of Nightwish. Tuomas has said that many of his earlier songs are like his diary, so he got his inspiration for them from his own life. However, it is debatable whether the subject of his longing is Tarja. It could be but only Tuomas knows this for sure.

Tom, do what all the clever guys do: Listen to your wife! Especially when they have a better understanding of the subject. ;-) Floor is just as important to the text as it is to your wife. She wants you to feel the text. But for this you have to know the text and that's why your wife wants to understand the text. Rumors say that the text is about Tuomas' love for the first singer Tarja. But she was never interested in him. This unrequited love is the ghost in the title. Some of the text remains puzzling because only Tuomas knows what it is really about. Fun fact: During rehearsals, Floor changed the ending. In the original the ghost fades vocally. Floor was too boring and sings out her 3.5 octaves. She also adapts other songs to her voice, if less dramatically. The Original with Tarja: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i4N4pa9rZq2-f7w.html

@@Honken55 I agree. Those lyrics are mostly about some romantic and abstract idea of a love that is pure and innocent, almost childish. It seems more like he was reading too much 19th century poetry than he was in love. Honestly I've been reading Nightwish lyrics to see if I can find it cause I think it would be fascinating if he was in love with Tarja and writting about it... But I can't see it. I think it's more or less settled in the Poet and the Pendulum that he saw her as a muse for his poetry and art (he also saw the band as an entity with it's own symbols and mythology) which is kinda obvious if you think he was writting the songs for her voice and her interpretation

Dear mrs Tuffnuts, you are spot on - Nightwish gives you an experience, and in each song!! This one is a Score, just like the title says. The songwriter - sorry - the composer is the Tuomas (Keyboard) - a phenomenal poetic acrobat into lyrics, that goes from fairytales, deep personal emotions over stories and into his deep interest in evolution, nature and science. You will have to kickstart your imagination and knowledge about the wonders of the world, nature, biology, humanity and human behavior, internet behavior - and music. This band are not just skilled musicians with a deep musical and knowledge background - they actually invents new ways in music. When Tuomas starts writing a new album, he research and writes for 1/2 - 1 year. During this process, he imagines and hears Floor's voice in his head, just like he hears the instruments, chorus and background symphonies. (he sometimes gets help from some of the others, or they come up with something) Tuomas records a tape on piano with the melody, and Floor gets the lyrics in writing. This tape he sends to the others. They listen and interpret all the songs in their interpretation - and adds their style/interpretation - sometimes they gets a brief translation from Tuomas. After - 6 - 8 weeks, they all meet in the camp, deep into the Finish woods, directly to a lake - no other sounds than the nature as background inspiration. Then they start merging and mixing all the versions into 1 piece. Sometimes a song changes dramatically, including the lyrics, but mostly they just adds all of the other's fingerprints and personal touch. Of course Floor as the lead singer, is the key to the songs, and Floor's interpretation of the lyrics are crucial. Floor is a highly sensitive person, and able to add emotions and passions in her singing and body language, like very few others. She is also one of the most powerful singers in the world, and that is very useful for all the songs she performs, especially in the duets with Marko (bass) and or Troy (Uillean pipe, bouzouki, flutes). She switches fluidly between all known singing styles, including those she has invented herself - she is a true voice acrobat and athlete - the perfect storyteller. It takes 18 months to create a new Nightwish album. I could see you tried counting like in normal songs - but this is Symphonic Metal, a merge of both, often composed with chapters and lots of transitions like symphonies - and with 3 phenomenal singer, with Floor as lead. Floor is by far the most versatile, talented, powerful and skilled singer in this century. Her voice toolbox, breath and voice techniques are incredible and she is constantly evolving. In this Wacken 2013 concert, range were around 3 1/2 octaves, but she has more now!! * * * * * I will give you a hint: Please google " The Greatest Show on Earth" - the book by Richard Dawkins, and read the description. Then react to: The Greatest Show on Earth, from Tampere 2015 - this is the book in music, effects, singing techniques - and musical evolution, if you listen carefully enough. And!! Important!!! - stay on until the video is completely finished - the speaking afterwards is an important part of the song. This is something that you have never experienced before - not kidding - this is Symphonic Metal - this is Nightwish. ** Or - if you as a singer yourself, would like to try something out of the ordinary: "How is the Heart" , the acoustic version from Planet Rock Radio 2020 - only Troy and Floor, from a promotion tour last spring. You just try yourself to copy her voice techniques here in this sweet ballad (chapter 2 is written to Floor as a tribute from Tuomas). In the Planet Rock Radio interview, Troy calls Floor's voice for "Stratospheric" - the look at his face at the end says it all. Greetings from Nightwish Army Denmark 🇩🇰 👍 💪 🤘 🤘 - and enjoy your journey into the Nightwish Universe. Your musical background gives you an advantage to really understand Symphonic Metal

Hello Sarah and Tom. Lovely to see you enjoying Floor and NW! Wacken Open Air is the biggest metal festival in the world. It is held every first week in August. Wacken is a township in northern Germany. It is a cattle area hence the bull's logo. Btw. in a lot of non-English speaking countries the "A" is pronounced as in "car". The "J" is pronounced like "Y". So Floor's surname is pronounced like YAnsen. The name Floor derives from Flora, the goddess of spring and flowers. If you like to see 2 goddesses at work check out Epica (a Dutch metal band with frontlady Simone Simons, a good friend of Floor, who was Simone's vocal coach), their songs "Sancta Terra" and Stabat Mater Dolorosa" both feat Floor. I think you will be blown away! Greetings from the Netherlands
