Just turned 70. Never heard of NW until 3 years ago. My favorites have been Zepp, Skynyrd, Boston, Stones, Moody Blues, AC/DC. They are now all second by a big margin. NW and Tuomas are by far the best I ever heard. Floor is out of this world and best singer I ever heard. Really enjoy you guys reactions. Please do The Greatest Show on Earth from Tampere 2015 next. You will be absolutely blown away. Play the video all the way until the screen goes dark at the end.

A similar story here. I'm 56 and have been an Electric Light Orchestra (E.L.O) appreciator for 40+ years, easily my favourite go to band plus I've seen many of the "greats" live including Queen and had not heard of Nightwish or Floor until around 11 months ago and was pestered in to listening to "The Poet and the Pendulum" live and OMG I was blown away and have been ever since. Nightwish are head and shoulders above everything that has previously been on my music radar relegating my beloved E.L.O. down in to second place. As for Floor....🙏😊👍

This is what happens guys when an absolute genius decides to release all masks and stand in front of the world with his completely naked soul, vulnerable. Assuming the reality that some people will comfort, others will hurt, still others will mock and laugh at his wounds. When he does that, a masterpiece is being born.

From the Anette era, Floor wanted to take over all the operatic parts, but Tuomas wanted to keep the boy soprano at the beginning. It takes inspiration from Edgar Allen Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum. The song is very personal for Tuomas, Emppu went over to check on him to see how he was doing. At the end He and Marko go to Tuomas as a show of support. Floor looks over for a moment before saying 'Thank You'. Tuomas would often have the sound guys take the vocals out of his in ears. Anytime you hear 'poet' or 'boy' ,Tuomas is usually talking about himself. The lyrics in the last section are some of the words that Tuomas' mother said to him when he went home. First lyric of the song- The End. Last lyric- The Beginning. The song is no longer played, as everyone involved has moved past the situation. Chrissy, hold that thought on greatest song ever, you haven't gotten to 'The Greatest Show On Earth' yet.

The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying show but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song, as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band)were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era

There are two more songs about this tragedy: "Master passion greed", sung by Marko is the maybe most angry song and was never be played live. This song is versus Marcelo, Tarjas husband. The 2nd is "Bye Bye beautiful", sung by Anette Olzon, the following singer. The Song is to Tarja as a good bye-song. And the 3rd and last is "The Poet", when Thomas blaming himself for the Desaster.

Perhaps my favorite Nightwish song ever (though it is too hard to narrow it down to one). I consider it Tuomas’s magnum opus. His most personal and emotional composition. Not sure I would have recommended it quite this early in your journey. Anyone can recognize it’s greatness, but the better you feel you know the members of the band and their history, the more powerful this song becomes. The final movement, Mother and Father, is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard. You guys are Nightwish Army faithful for sure now. Keep exploring Nightwish!

This song really hits hard in a few places, especially that live performance. Emppu going over and checking in with Tuomas, Tuomas being emotionally open and vulnerable (especially during Mother/Father, that final movement), and at the end where Marko and Emppu, the remaining members that were there during this time, walk over and play with Tuomas. You just don't often get to see real emotion and support like that from men in public with each other. Musically, I love how they hit that 3 minute mark from the "3 minutes and counting" line until the blade sound that cuts to the heartbeat. That is an exact timing hit in a live show. I also love how complex the bass part is Marko plays while singing his vocal parts in the Dark Passion Play movement of the song. That is just hard to do and he makes it seem like the most natural thing in the world. This is easily my favorite song. Not just by Nightwish, but ever. I also don't know that I've seen a better single performance in a live setting. This and Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013 are just absolute perfection. Nightwish just never seems to miss.

Floor's voice and Tuomas playing the keys along with the rest of Nightwish just makes this song the masterpiece it has become. Annet did a great job on the studio version, but the emotion wasn't as strong as when Floor performed the song. I just can't hear this song enough. It plays in my head almost every day. Anything Floor Jansen sings is done beautifully.

Hey, you did great job with this beatifull song🥰. The story behind the song is sad but moving towards something new. In dispute situations, there are always at least two parties, and one party gets screwed. It's funny how quickly people change their own opinion, like it happened to Tuomas; when a master musician becomes the most hated person in the entire nation, up to the state leadership. Thank you for again sharing a wonderful reaction. I love to watch your appreciation and love of good music. The first time I heard this song I almost had a heart attack when Marko kicked in with his vocals. And how in the heck can he sing and play that bass line at the same time? This song is truly a masterpiece. The double kick in the fourth section (Kai Hahto on drums here) is so steady and firm. Amazing work. Floor is an empath, which is why she is so marvelous at expressing what a song needs. She said she cannot look at Tuomas during this song since knowing how much of himself is in it would make her break down in tears. She never looks at him until the end, right before she says thank you to the crowd. Also, did you notice this song begins with the lyrics "the end" and ends with "the beginning," completing the circle back to lucidity. Again, great reaction, thank you and keep rocking🤘🤘🤘

Glad you guys did the research into this story, because it really does help with what you have seen here. Before I get into my comment on the reaction, one thing you have to realize is that this whole entire incident revolving around this song is actually split into 3 different "letters" (lack of a better word). First is the song "Bye Bye Beautiful", which is effectively Tuomas' goodbye letter to Tarja. Like The Poet and the Pendulum, that song was rarely played live, it at all. Floor is really good friends with Tarja (when offered the job, Floor asked Tarja for permission to join Nightwish), and refuses to sing that song. There is an official music video for it, with Anette Olzon as the singer in the band. The next song, "Master Passion Greed", is the band's letter to Marcelo Cebuli, who is Tarja's husband and manager, whom the band placed a lot of the blame on for how Tarja had changed. That song has NEVER been played live, nor ever will be played live. Everyone is over this part of their lives, and are at least on some speaking terms. *I would request to react to that song.* You will only find the studio/album track for it, but it is a very powerful song, and one that stresses their work with orchestras and choirs. Then obviously, The Poet and the Pendulum is Tuomas' letter to the fans, in response for all the flack that he received regarding Tarja's dismissal from the band. Most of the people blamed him for it without knowing the entire story (it even got the government of Finland involved), and nearly drove him to suicide. Thankfully he didn't, thanks to a friend of his and words from his parents (which are included in the song). Instead, he inserted himself into the song, and kills himself in the song so he wouldn't have to do it in real life. If I remember correctly, this was the last time ever that this song was played live, so those at Wembley got a real treat, because it can be counted on 2 hands at the most that this song was ever played live. One of the biggest concerns about this song is how it affects Tuomas, because it is very personal to him, so everyone at one point or another walks over to him to check on him to make sure he's okay. When Emppu doesn't have a part to play during the 2nd verse, he's walking over to Tuomas, and asking him if he is okay. Most people forget that for the letter given to Tarja signaling her dismissal, every person in the band at that time signed it; Emppu and Marco signed it as well, but Tuomas as the founder of the band, took all of that flack upon himself, so they know this is very personal to him. That now said, The song is broken into 5 parts: The White Lands of Empathica, Home, Pacific, Dark Passion Play, and Mother, Father. With that, time to take you back high school English Class. If you think back to the short story "The Pit and the Pendulum", by Edgar Allen Poe, what a lot of this song comprises of is that story, but instead of the man being there, Tuomas has inserted himself into the story. That is why you see a LOT of references to a pendulum in this song (and a few ravens, which could also reference another Poe short story, The Raven). In a lot of Tuomas' songs, he refers to himself in them, either as The Poet, the Dead Boy, or the Beast. In this case, he is The Poet. He starts the song at the end, and tells the story in retrospect for what leads to that moment. However, "The End" also could mean the end of that chapter of Nightwish at that time. He then goes into "Home": what they were going through immediately after Tarja left. When he tried writing after that (Tarja's dismissal), it was just the same music that he had written before, but couldn't do it because of slowly ripping that bandaid off from her intentions of going solo. The chorus is highly important here, because letting her go really hurt him; he lost a childhood friend at that time, and didn't have anyone to turn to for support; the band was just as hurting as he was, and more so, the fans were hurting just as much. So all of his shoulders were crying as hard as he was (I can not cry, 'cause the shoulder cries more). Pacific is how the band started, back when they were young, and while it was just a dream for mood music, it (the dream) and they (each one in the band) became so much bigger than what they ever realized. At this point, he starts to feel the oncoming backlash from the fans because for him, he was doing the right thing to save his creation, which was Nightwish; time after time and response after response, he could feel the fans anger for what he had done (and all the while, the blade from the pendulum getting closer (keep in mind, we're talking Poe here).... .. Which leads to Dark Passion Play. A lot of this can possibly get its story from the Last Supper ("second robber to the right of Christ" could mean Judas, if you remember the painting), as well as the Crucifixion. However, the important part here is listening to what the whispering boy is saying, about how he has been strapped to the altar, and only having 3 minutes and counting. That three minutes is how long it took the blade to reach the Poet... but also when you time it from when the by says that, 3 minutes later, it happens. Also.. it takes balls to write your own eulogy into a song where you are metaphorically killing yourself. Again, what saves Tuomas? That's Mother, Father: words his parents spoke to him during the period where he had contemplated suicide. That not only saved him, but also sparked the last two words of the song: The Beginning. The beginning of a new Tuomas, and most importantly, the beginning of a new Nightwish; this time, with Anette singing. Without that beginning happening, we wouldn't have Floor with the band now. Note how Tuomas' in-ear monitors are not in his ear; he told the sound techs to turn the volume down for those, as well as pull them out of his ears, because he knew he woudl break down and lose it if he heard these words. Finally, note how both Emppu and Marco go to stand by him in solidarity, because they supported him throughout all of it, and were there throughout the entire thing. Floor looks over at him as well.

As you know, this one is incredibly painful for Tuomas...even here, 10yrs later, he has the vocal feed to his in-ear monitors turned off for the performance. You noticed Emppu wandering between his parts...you will notice that both he and Marko gather around Tuomas, to support their brother. Tho they went thru it too, the heartbreak was multiplied for Tuomas, both as Tarja's childhood friend, and the band leader. The soprano/falsetto at the beginning was sung by a young boy named Guy Elliott. And Floor brings very deep emotion with her delivery! This one brings many to tears...but for me, it's their even bigger opus, The Greatest Show On Earth. While it is a song about the evolution of all life, from the Big Bang on...its in no way anti-religion. Should you choose to check.it out...I suggest the Tampere version...and let the video play ALL the way til it stops...thru the credits...there are very moving spoken word passages. They always put things into sharp perspective for me!

What a fabulous reaction, so early in your journey. You all understand what Tuomas is saying through his music, you faces at the beginning! "What is going on?" Then Floors voice... More recent drummer, Kai, who was selected by Jukka, they are good friends. So many different moods, in the different sections. Ayreon, Epica, Dream Theatre, etc.

For Tuomas (specially) this was so hard time...he was about to end Nightwish after leaving of Tarja and how that all affected to them. This masterpiece was the first song on the album after Tarja (Dark Passion Play). This song begins with the boy choir..."The End" and ends "The beginning"...new era started.

Wonderful reaction. It's an extremely sad song, but yet so beautiful in it's composition and songwriting. I totally love the way Tuomas can put his feelings into these poetic lyrics and Floor being able to convey his feelings so masterfully. They haven't performed this song live very often, as it was quite hard on Tuomas and I doubt that they will play it live again any time soon. Tuomas, fortunately, was able to leave all this behind him and move on, so it's understandable that he doesn't want to go back to this aweful period in time. However, his feelings at the time have provided us with an epic masterpiece. And Crissy, I know what you mean when you say you want to wake up and see the scores on your walls. I actually use that last orchestral piece of the song as my alarm. It's just so soothing. There is another one of these masterpieces yet to be discovered by you; 'The Greatest Show On Earth'. It's all about the history of the universe, the story of life, our common human journey, and the scientific quest for knowledge. Once you're ready to dive into this one, make sure you watch the Tampere 2015 version of it. It will blow your mind, both the song and the performance. Regards from the Netherlands, take care!

So when you told at 24:12 about us viewers recommending other bands to react to, I was like NO need right away! You guys take all the time you need to incorporate that Nightwish inspiration into your own songs. That i.m.h.o. is vastly more important than all the (well-spent) energy you put into these great reactions. So take it easy you guys, it's quality over quantity as far as I'm concerned. Also, throughout the video, you'll see Emppu and Marko both check in with Tuomas (such as Emppu at 6:40) because this is figuratively and literally Tuomas' emotional suicide to get through the depression he fell into after firing Tarja. Emppu and Marko supported his decision (with drummer Jukka, who is now a manager for the band after he needed to step back for medical insomnia treatment), and they know the pain he went through both at the time and whenever this song is played. At 6:41 you can see Tuomas reply with "Okei," the Finnish version of "Okay," meaning he was doing well. Also, because of how powerful Floor's voice is, when this song was still on the setlist, he had his engineer turn off the vocal channels into his monitors, because he sings the song himself (you can see him singing the line "Try to save them all" at almost exactly 20:00) TO himself, and if he had Floor's voice in his ears, he has stated that it would be almost too painful to play the song all the way through without breaking down.

Tuomas, the Ocean Soul! To be able to put the worst part in your life into words and music the way he did, still boggles the mind. And he doesn't refer to himself as a composer (he doesn't like to be called that) but just a music writer. So humble! I'm so glad he found love and happiness again with his wife Johanna Kurkula, who is a beautiful lady and beautiful singer! As you said at the beginning of this video that as a band you know how hard it is to write a song, maybe it is an idea to react to "Making of a New Album", their 8th, which is called "Endless Forms Most Beautiful". Originally is consists of 21 short-period episodes but YT-er Nimwey put them al together. You'll see where and how they rehearse and record and it is also funny. And you get to know the bandmembers a bit better. It is a long one, 2 hrs19.58, and you can watch it in your own time but personally I would love to share it with you. Making it an evening with 2nd Hands Souls and NW, with a beer, a glass of wine or tea in my case haha and some snacks and have a lovely time. How about that? Tuomas Holopainen is a really great composer/lyricist. as a big donald duck fan (and especially a big fan of Keno don Rosa, the best duck artist) he wanted to make a tribute album to Scrooge Mcduck. the album "Music Inspired by the Life and Times of Scrooge" came out. it was supposed to be a self-published album, but nuclear blast heard about it, they wanted to produce the album, even though Tuomas told them that do you understand what this album is about, it's film music for a film that doesn't exist, it's music for a cartoon, it has nothing in common with Nightwish and they answered "it doesn't matter, we still want to produce it..." here's a link to one of the songs on that album. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fIurtbiIn5ixj84.html the singers are Johanna Kurkela (tuomas's wife) and Johanna Iivanainen. Fantastic reaction guys. I am a 70 year old Australian and only found out about Nightwish some 12 months ago. If you want to deviate slightly from Nightwish please try a reaction to Sabaton. The drummer of Sabaton just happens to me married to Floor Jansen. They have a daughter, cant wait for her to grow up and start singing. Floor's sister Irean is also a singer, if you go down the Ayreon path you will most likely see them doing a duet. Sabaton is what is called a Power Metal band. Slightly heaver than a metal band, and their lead singer is incredible. The two starting songs for Sabaton are "Bismark" and 82nd All The Way. If you decide to react to 82nd All The Way there is a great version when they do a duet with another band call Amaranth.

Despite what some people claim, it is not the event of Tarja leaving the band (she threatened many times to leave and start solo) For a very sensitive person Tuomas is, the idea that it would end soon..made it hard for him to compose more music. The whole band decided that it was better to move on and they fired tarja. There is a pubic letter. It is the backlash, what almost destroyed this band and Tuomas took the blame for all of it. Even the prime minister, other musicians, friends, lots of fans spoke out their hatefull comments towards Tuomas (They are Finlands biggest band and export product a Tender soul, like Tuomas, could not deal with the charactar murder on him, became severe depressed, locked himself in his small little cabin he has at a Finnish lake. Friends and family were extremely concerned and checked on him constantly. It was a good friend of Thoumas who said: If you feel you kill yourself to escape all the shit, please write a music piece where do just that. So Tuomas got inspired and started writing, about his pain, the decending pedulum (the haters) ""The crows who feast on the wrotten poet" (arco's part) are the people, politcians, media and fans who kept harassing him, while already very depressed. His mother and father are very important to him and they supported him the best they could. I love that part where Floor sings as she is his mother...beautiful. (I went to the rockacademy with Floor and se her now and than, that's how I know what really went on) They don't play this song often and Tuomas asks the sound ingeneirs often to turn of Floor's mic off in his ears, because it is still to painful. Thank you for your reaction, This was a deep one, with really heavy metal, sirene parts, raw parts (I can't cry, cause the shoulders cry more : he could not go to friends because they where crying about Tarja leaving, forgetting whatit ment to him) I can's die, I, a whore for the cold world. = whore: abused by media, reporters, politicians and Tarja fans. Thanks for you sincere reaction guys and girl. (Can I ask one more time for the DEVIL IN THE DEEP DARK OCEAN? You will love the music video of NOISE of Nightwish as well. They could not tour, due to covid, so they made incredable musi videos instead! Voice is ...wow. Don't want to spoil anything. Much love from Holland x
