hey just wondering ,can you make your video box smaller that way there will be no point in watching at all, the focus of a reaction is what your reacting to as you will find many of the most successful reactors will put the music video in the foreground and put the reactors box in the background, straining to see what your reacting to is not fun. cheers

Many of Tuomas' compositions reflect back on himself. Sadly, this one reflects without any doubt the darkest period in his life. It's all about his mental state after the band had fired their first singer Tarja Turunen. This was not taken well by the media and a large group of fans. Although it was the band's decision to fire Tarja it was Tuomas who as band leader (and childhood friend of Tarja) was blamed personally. The whole affair brought him into a deep depression because he was dreading the end of his band, his one and all reason to live. He even considered suicide but after having deep conversations with his parents and best friends he decided to commit his suicide in this masterpiece 'The Poet and the Pendulum'. They only performed this song a few times live in the first years of Floor's carreer start with them. At that time understandably this song was hard to stomach for him because it ripped open old wounds. In some fragments he even had his in-ears muted so he could not hear the lyrics. Although this in all its facets is a true masterpiece it is not part of their playlist anymore. Asked for the reason Tuomas said in an interview 'Foremost because I'm not that person anymore'. Thank you for your touching emotional reaction! Happy to subscribe.

Hello Greyhound53200 and welcome to the channel! 😊 First of all, thank you very much for the detailed comment about the situation of the band at that time, especially Tuomas. With this information, we understand that it is a very exciting song. It goes through different environments and makes you immerse yourself in the history of the band, in the history of his (Tuomas) life. Thank you very much again and we hope to find more beautiful surprises like this song. Greetings from Argentina! 🤘

The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying shows but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song, as to put the past behind. To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are spoken to him by his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band)were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era

Dear Mika You're not the only one crying over this masterpiece. Many seasoned members of the Nightwish Army feel the same way, they cry just like you did. This masterpiece, there is no other way to call it, was written by Tuomas from his soul after going through the darkest and most difficult period of his life. After he had to fire Tarja from the band, it felt like the whole world hit him and literally made his life hell. And if you look closely, you can see very clearly how much the memories hurt him. That's why Emppu stood by him for several minutes to give him mental support. In several close-ups you can see from his body language and facial expressions how difficult it is for him. By the way, he asked the sound engineer to block out Floor's voice from his earpiece. I think it would have been even harder for him then. The line of text "Try to save him all, bleed no more" shows the pain in his face most clearly. Marco then went up to Tuomas to give him mental support as well. And Floor waited until she had convinced herself that Tuomas was fine....only then did she softly say "thank you". Greetings from the Nightwish Army Germany the lady P.S. I don't think this masterpiece will ever be played again. Tuomas has finished with the past and there is no need to dig it up again.

The song ist Tuomas way to overcome the lost of Tarja. He was about to commit suicide in real life like in the song. When they play that tune live he has to mute the in-ear Monitor because of the strong emotions that are connected to the song. A very personal song. For myself it is a beacon of hope in dark times.

Hello The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen. This is one of the interpretations and i know lots of fans do not agree, they just need to read the open letter that was given to Tarja by the whole band at her last concert with Nightwish, where they fired her. And the main reason that Tuomas went through a depression was that specially the Tarja fans where furious and showed that in the media and everyone was blaming Tuomas. (the fans spit on his grave). He felt the whole world was against him. However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does. The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly. Hey guys! Fun fact for Poet and the Pendulum: Tuomas is such a genius that when the woman says, "I only have 3 minutes and counting," it is exactly three minutes from that point to where you see Tuomas slice his neck as the Pendulum passes. There is a reason why we call him the "Metal Mozart," because first, metal is simply classical music with electricity. Second, classical can be very emotionally pure, even dark emotion. Metal gives the emotion you feel from the music that grit that makes it affect the listener that much more. This is, IMO, one of the best expressions of what depression does to someone, and how they reach the point they feel self-deletion is the only way out. Songs like this are why I, despite my flaws, despite my problems, always try to help people dealing with depression, because a permanent solution for a temporary problem is never the answer. It is why, as Raoul Kerr says in Jee Veerey by Bloodywood, "You can get back up, if you're still alive." It takes a will to keep fighting, to realize how beautiful life really is. This is why Poet and the Pendulum is so beautifully tragic to me.

Hello friend, Oliver here. 🖐We are really impressed by the song and the story behind it. Depression is a very deep problem. People tend to normalize situations and not pay attention to signs. A few years ago I lost a college buddy because of this. One day before his death he was very happy, but the next day I got the horrible news. He had a fight with his girlfriend and decided to end his life. At any time the feeling can resurface and it is very important as a friend or family member to be able to identify the signs and help. You seem like a great person. Take care!😊 A big hug from Argentina!

Lot's of appreciation for your honest thoughts and feelings. You don't just listen to music, you can feel it just like I do and that's wonderful. Floor is such a phenomenal singer, not only has she mastered almost every technique, she also is a brilliant actress. But the real magic lies in her abilitiy to litterally touch your mind and your sould through music. In fact, that's not really magic, certain frequencies, harmonics etc. can resonate with our body and trigger certain things. Anyone who knows about ASMR will understand that this is a thing. It's not only Floor but also Tuomas' composing that helps with this, The Pacific is the best example, as soon as the cello starts playing you can feel it, I think almost everybodye will feel that. And then when Floor starts to sing on top, I mean, you're a musician, you understand what I'm talking about. I've got one request for you, please listen to the studio version with Anette Olzon, former front women of Nightwish, she's definitely the most underrated singers they had (they had 3, Tarja, Anette and Floor). And there's a reason, Anette, at least back than, had more like a pop style voice and her stage presence wasn't that good BUT she was a great studio musician and I think you hear that when you listen to the studio version of this song that they recorded with Anette! It could be Tuomases work but there are suttle tweaks and additions in the vocal parts that I think were Anettes creative input and, to be honest, make this version absolute on par with the live version with Floor.

This song is so emotional....very personal for Tuomas. He was evidently quite depressed after firing his life long friend Tarja from Nightwish. From what I have read, he wrote this song, where he commits suicide, in the song instead of doing it for real! I totally understand depression... mine just led me to try to escape by drinking heavily. I am now 23 years, 2 months and 13 days sober. I salute Tuomas for conquering his depression! It would have been a huge tragedy to lose Tuomas...he is such a brilliant song writer and composer!

Well not exactly about Tumas' death. For me, its more about the emotions he felt after the split, particularly as a result of Tarja fan reaction. Due to the depression he felt that he could only depict the depths of despair by committing suicide in song not in reality. But ultimately this song takes you through stages of grief, depression, anger and ultimately resilience, redemption and rebirth of a the band in a new era. However he was so affected by this song that eventually he had to ask for the vocals to be switched off on his in-ear monitors. After all the fuss and the passage of time he felt the band had moved on from this state of mind and so it would not be played again. You can see how it affected him by the fact that Emppu and Marco both go over to him for moral support at times; at the end both do and Floor stops to look over to him before her usual "Thank you". The Sofia concert in September 2016 was therefore the last time this was performed, sadly for those of us for whom it is the Number 1 Nightwish song.

Nice reaction for this masterpiece. I still need to say this. You can skip every comment that is claiming that Tarja was a diva. She was not and never will be. She just matured faster than guys, found a husband, and wanted to be with him. Also, even I wouldn't have wanted to travel with bunch of drunken rock stars on a smokey bus and having constant after show "parties" etc. Not even when I was a 20 years old wanna-be "rock star". People need to understand that there was no glamour on that side. And Tarja had already told that she will leave after the next album and start a solo career, but guys wanted to humiliate her. It was really childish act, and that is the one thing I will always hate about Nightwish' history. I'm still not saying that it was all guys fault, but they handled it very poorly.

As a true fan of Floor Jansen as my favorite female lead with Nightwish... I respect Tarja and the ethereal presence she brought to the band. And I get the "I don't want to travel on the band's party bus anymore" feeling she had. Still, Floor stepped up big time when Tuomas fired Anette Olsen. She has continued to devote herself to this band, even with her solo career and her marriage to Hannes Van Dahl, the amazing drummer from Sabaton, and her lovely daughter Freja. How she does this, I don't know. But it is wonderful to behold. We all handle some things poorly in this life. It's called being human. By the way, thank you so much for your work with remastercide. Your Deichbrand 2022 remastering is absolutely incredible, as is your ongoing work on Wembley 2015. I love, love, love the passion you put into supporting Nightwish... as well as ShauningtonN. @@OhMyMole yeah, there are usually different perspectives to consider. Some of these new fans tend and even want to accuse Tarja, but let me put it this way. How would they feel if this same thing would happen to Floor? Anyone can say it's different with Floor (and I know it won't happen to Floor), but it was the same exact thing when it happened to Tarja. We old fans were devastated. I'm assuming your mother tongue is Spanish fro what you from what you are saying, and not as a criticism, bot to help you, just want to let you know: Tecladista = Keyboard player Escenario = Stage. Keep going with Nightwish and Floor's reactions, they are just great. If you want to see how easy Floor can make you cry, just look for the Beste Zangers shows with Floor Jansen participation.

@@OhMyMole It's available on KZread. The lyrics are much harsher and express real anger (rather a la Master Passion Greed") and it is worth listening to as it gives you some indication that all the band had strong emotions about the whole situation.

"The poet and the pendulum" is from Anette's time. It was released on the album Dark Passion Play (2007), the group's sixth. According to Tuomas this song was the way he found to deal with the depression after Tarja's departure. The band received a lot of hatred from all over the world. They lost a lot of fans. I'm going to summarize the story for you to understand why people's reaction was so negative. Tarja's resignation was a very dramatic episode. The relationship between her and the band had been bad for some time, so at the end of 2004 she decided to tell the band that she would leave. The idea was to record one last album and go on a farewell tour. She wanted to announce her decision to the public and prepare fans for the vocalist change, however, Tuomas convinced her not to do so at the time. It turns out that, after that meeting, the band planned a public firing on the sly. They delivered a letter to Tarja at the end of the "End of an era" show and posted it on the band's website the next day. The band made several accusations against Tarja and her husband. It was a scandal. In response, Tarja wrote a letter and held a press conference to respond better to the group's accusations. Her husband also spoke. He answered more than 150 questions from fans around the world and posted the answers on the internet. Given the reports that were brought and other available records, including videos and documentaries, a large part of the fan base revolted against the band. Faced with criticism from different sides, Tuomas fell into a depression and wrote "The poet and the pendulum" as a way of dealing with the situation. Some say that Tuomas suffered from unrequited love for Tarja. This feeling would have been the fuel for the composition of some songs. The question of Tuomas' love for Tarja is actually an old theory of fans. This theory was built even before Tarja's dismissal, and is based on old interviews and on the lyrics that Tuomas used to write. The idea of the existence of unrequited love was strengthened when Marcelo himself (Tarja's husband) spoke about the subject in the responses he gave to fans. See these answers: "36) Many people say that everything this happened because he Tuomas felt something for the Tarja and this feeling was not corresponded. It was the impression that passed. This can be answered? Or not? Heluza Mercaus Viegas Brazil I promised that everything was going to be answered. To cut a long story short, in October 2004 I needed to ask Tuomas to come to talk to Tarja and me in our hotel room in the middle of the tour. Even though he knows Tarja many years before me, he never could achieve his goal. In this meeting I clearly told him that his chances to be with Tarja were gone. I needed to tell him that there was no reason to keep on trying any longer, since I married her. As usual he didn't speak much, but he said to me that nobody was going to be able to stop his love for Tarja. After this unhappy meeting, everything changed. The guy that until then said in interviews that, without Tarja, that would be the end of Nightwish, changed his message into: Nightwish is my band, my music, my lyrics, the scenery of my soul. Is up to you to check all interviews from the band before and after end of 2004 until today. Tarja never changed her thoughts about her position in the band. She has never mentioned that Nightwish was her band or that she was more important than the other band members. Nightwish lyrics are Tuomas' life diary, as it has been said. With this new information that I am sharing with you, please check once again some of them. We all can find amazing songs with beautiful lyrics full of poetry. Their meaning won't remain that uncertain any longer. 37) Was Tarja in any romance/love way with Tuomas (he seems jelouice to me). Mariela Todoroviè Slovenia Tarja never had any romance nor was ever in love with him. I have received many questions accusing Tuomas of being jealous, envious, bitter and of being in love. I have no interest in making any judgement about those things and people's feelings. Other people than Tuomas also told me how much they love Tarja. There are many different levels of love and I have no problems with any of them as long as reasonable limits are not exceeded. Is funny if you carefully check the cover of End of an Era (that Tarja didn't propose, but accepted). You will find what seems to be an angel (Tarja's nickname in the official forum of her web page) and a demon or god. Only these two characters dominate the scene. I couldn't find any other characters in the cover at all. They are standing facing away from each other. Between them there is turmoil and a strong light, whether striking into or coming out of a cracked heart. It is definitely not Tarja's heart. Her heart is very healthy and full of love, because she has always listened to it (instead of me); as Tuomas advised her to do in the open letter. The title of the scene is "Nightwish - End of an Era". You can make your own conclusions. I am merely describing a DVD cover 157) What were, in your opinion, the real motives for Tarja Turunen to be out of Nightwish? ¿Cuáles fueron, en tu opinión, los verdaderos motivos de la salida de Tarja Turunen de Nightwish? Marta Perez Spain I think we will never know the real motives. Motives rest in Tuomas, some close people and band members' hearts. Seems there has been at least very strong motives to kick out Tarja, specially the way they did it. Some of them might be the mentioned cultural differences that band members have in their minds and hearts with me, the non corresponded love from Tuomas to Tarja, Tarja's values that didn't match Tuomas and Tarja's maturity that didn't match Tuomas and the others, not compatible life styles between band members, different concept of friendship and responsibilities that comes with it, different approach to record business, the obvious problem to communicate within the band; just to name a few." The depression itself and the song "The poet and the pendulum" can, in theory, be read as a reflection of this love drama. Regardless of whether this theory about Tuomas is true or not, the fact is that bringing internal issues to the public was the worst choice. A lot of the band's past has been brought up and no one has come out unscathed. Because of the scandal, Tarja lost some fans and contracts for her solo career. On the other hand, the band also lost fans and had little-known events brought to a wider audience. For example, Tarja suffered an attempted sexual abuse in the middle of a concert in Guadalajara in 2000. At the time, the band continued playing as if nothing had happened, even after Tarja left the stage along with the criminal and the security guards. There are videos of the episode here on KZread. Later, after Tarja left, the band itself mentioned the event in its official biography. The way the band decided to fire Tarja and the facts of the past that were brought to public knowledge infuriated many fans. To get a sense of how big the fan base was in the past, look at the number of views of the first videos with Anette ("Bye, bye, beautiful" and "Amaranth"). These numbers are representative of the fan base situation at the end of Tarja's period and beginning of Anette. The first album with Anette was the band's first album ever released with KZread ever running. We were all curious to know who the new singer was and what she sounded like. Unfortunately Anette didn't please a large part of the original fan base, which also contributed to the band losing more fans. Anette and Floor helped to attract a different audience and reconfigure the fan base. Some old fans have returned with the entry of Floor. She is nothing new to us. For example, I've known her since her first band, After Forever.
