Why We Prune Tomato Plants | The Garden is Laid by!

Watch this video to see how we prune our tomato plants for better growth and finish putting down a layer of mulch. With the garden laid by now we only need to maintain and harvest! Of course you know we had to have a popsicle break 😀

I enjoy watching your Popsicle chats with Matt. The easy pace reminds me of me and my late husband, when just for a little while during the day there was nothing we had to do but be there together. We had 33 years together and never ran out of things to talk about. Just sitting together and talking about our day was the best part of my day. And throughout the day, if anything interesting happened I would tuck it away in my pocket, so to speak, to pull out and share later. In that way, it was like we were together even when we were apart. You and Matt have that same glad-just-to-be-together quality.

There IS a taste in the air, Miss Tipper.....I viewed a 400 acre piece of land in Missouri, one time....as i walked down a steep cliff into the white river which crossed the property, I remember saying to the Realtor....."oh my gosh, the closer u get to the river the more robust the scent and flavor of the air..... this river is CLEAN and alive..." the water was deep deep azure blue and clear as a bell....u could SEE the bottom and it was alive w happy fish...."💖 The smell and taste is sooo Good.....a sweetness in the air.....🖐🏻☺️

Today June 25 we got our first two tomatoes off the vine. They're Early Girl hybrids. Never had them this early before. Since tomorrow is my birthday, I figure they're mine to eat. I'll share them with Ms. Begonias if she behaves like she should. I prune my tomato vines also. You're right Tipper it does help produce bigger tomatoes. Also, it's a good idea to prune back the branches near the bottom of the vine to keep the blight from splashing, from the soil where it lives, up on them when it rains. Tomato vine blight is closely related to the blight that caused the great potato famine in Ireland in the 1840s. Just looking at those tomatoes on the window sill has got me slobbering like a one-eyed fat girl discerning a milkshake. You two obviously enjoy each others company which makes for a strong family. Ms. Begonias and I have been together almost 57 years. I've got all the knuckle-bumps to prove it.

I'm constantly battling ivy, privet, mulberry, fall clematis, porcelain berry, briar, vinca, blackberry, dock...the list goes on and it never stops. The invasives have ruined my back flower garden. The heat makes it extra hard. So I'm impressed with your beautiful yard and gardens. You two are amazing. ❤️

I remember Pop-pop had problems with leaves dying on his tomatoes. but only in certain years. Every season he lost tomatoes to dry rot. He didn't tie his tomatoes up, but dry rot would appear whether they were laying on the ground or hanging from the vine. He would pick them off the vines and drop them on the garden to be plowed under to help enrich the soil. His biggest nemesis was the horned green tomato worm (caterpillar). Every few days, he would go around all his tomato vines, pick off the caterpillars big enough to see and stomp them on the ground. I agree with Matt that it's hard to beat a garden tomato sandwich. I just don't put salt on fresh garden tomatoes. I think they taste fine without it.

I have a very small garden and I have been growing vegetables for about forty years. I have been trimming my tomato plants for about thirty five years just because you can tell which branch will produce and which will not. Your explanation is much better than mine. Thank you. I like the way that you, Matt and the girls explain things by saying "I am not an expert but this is what works for me and you should find what works best for you ". Great videos, thanks again.

Listening to this episode was so great; you both just talking about plants, and needs and how you get your garden to grow. The ice pops segment, yes!!! I live in Arizona, where when I go to plant tomatoes I need to start the seeds in December to plant in March to get a crop before the heat stops fruit set in July. And, if one is lucky, you can baby the tomato plants through early September and might get a few before our winter. Which if you are careful and watch the news about night time temperatures, you might carry those tomatoes over to next spring. But generally they don't do well. Chili peppers will overwinter. I do get a surprise set of new tomato plants in the spring once the soil (in big containers and raised beds; our "native soil" is a mix of sand, clay, dirt, and calcium carbonate [which is limestone and when it gets wet it becomes like concrete but has good micronutrients] warms up and the tiny tomatoes I missed sprout in the pots. The shape and heritage of such sprouts is uncertain, but they are tasty. I understand about the blueberries, my apricot tree did a 3 year rotation on the number of fruits set. One year was going to be the big bounty and I went out in the evening to test the fruits to see if they were ripe, they were and the next morning would be the harvest. Well, there were a lot of apricot pits on the ground but no fruit. I had, once netted the tree but finding dead birds and lizards caught in the net was unacceptable. So I resigned myself to sharing with the birds in the future (and picking ripe fruit daily). I really enjoy your channel.

Your garden is beautiful. Yes, you are right about how fast everything grows up here. I always say that by August I start to feel claustrophobic cause the trees start to grow so close to the house. We marvel at how beautiful the new green leaves are and then I always say, and yes the new growth is beautiful and they’ll be pretty in the fall, but all those leaves will fall & have to be dealt with. More leaves every year. However, this is an amazing place to live, better than the city for sure. ❤️💕❤️💕😊

They're such a calming essence to make me feel relaxed too. Both of ya'll are so very blessed to have & appreciate each other & your fine garden & property. People back then & even in the 1950s when my younger & only sister each of mothers gardens were shared within our neighborhood. Now day's its kinda rare, but it do happen occasionally. Here, if you are wise, you know to take a cardigan or kagoule with you if you're going out for a few hours. We get a heatwave for a couple of weeks in August when the heat is unbearable! Then it goes back to cold and rain. Much love😊

Nasturtiums are great to grow around tomatoes because the bugs will go to them first. I love to put the blossoms in salads, but here in FL we have a lot of whitefly around our food, so Nasturtiums tend to take care of that by directing the bugs to their leaves. I dearly love a tomato sandwich.

My husband and I disagree on tomato care. He grew up in PA. His mom let the tomatoes do their thing and never did anything. I'm a trimmer and keep them upright. For about 3 yrs I was unable to tend to the garden and our tomatoes suffered due to his way of doing things. Thankfully I'm back in the garden and it's looking good. Your garden is so well kept and pretty. You're a great team and are blessed to have one another.

I don’t ever remember my grandparent cutting back or having us cut back the tomatoes. Their garden though was much more out in the open and got a lot of wind movement so may not have been as much of an issue for them. I do remember that grandma used to save the ties off of bread sacks and then we would use them to do things like tie up plants and so on.

My grandpa wore overalls on the farm with a button up shirt with long sleeves buttoned all up to the neck and wrist all year long. Of course he was in his mid 80s

Very informative, thank you. I was glad to hear you say okra as “oak-ree”. My wife is from Arkansas and that is how they pronounce it. From hearing her, I always say it that way. It throws me to hear someone say “oak-rah” that just sounds plumb wrong.

I like using Bonsai Training Wire to tie up my tomatoes, the wire is re-usable and malleable and made of coated aluminum. 1.5mm size works well. At the end of the year, I collect up the pieces of wire for re-use next year.

Thank you so much for showing me how to trim my tomatoes. My Grandpa showed me how many years ago, but I couldn’t remember exactly what to do. I live in S.C, and it gets super hot here. And it is very hard on tomato plants. Again, thank you and good luck to both of you. Tom Yonker Spartenburg, S.C.

Yes when my Daddy was still alive he raised a big garden every year and he fought blight all summer and tomatoes were his big thing. He believed it came from the soil and he would move his around. He finally put them in big watering troughs. He raised enough tomatoes for the whole town. I really enjoy your channel. Glad I found you. I live in the Ozarks in Northern Arkansas.

I know exactly what that person meant by "You can taste it" The best time to experience this is in Spring after a soft rain and someone turns over their garden for the first time and its' early morning and there is a fog, You can literally taste the Mountains.

I haven't been religious about pruning my tomato plants but here in Northern Virginia, we have plenty of humidity and I suspect my tomatoes need the ventilation. I actually paused the video and went out front to prune the one tomato plant that is in a pot at the front door. I'll get the ones that are in my garden plot some evening this week. Thanks for an informative video!

Mom always called it "suckering the tomatoes". She had grown up with the tomatoes crawling all over the beds because they had so much land for gardening. and when she had supports later in smaller places she would take out the little new "limbs" as they appeared.

You brought up the crows as pests. From another channel, I learned “tulle” pronounced “tool” fabric is useful to keep pests from eating berries, fruit, etc. Drape over bushes or small trees. Ordered on Amazon is inexpensive. I plan on using to cover strawberries. I hope this is helpful! Blessings!
