Hi Daniel! I thought I must be the only foreigner in China to drive a Wuling bread van! One day I was driving some Chinese colleagues around, and got a great laugh from a toll booth attendant, who said she had never seen a white guy drive a mianbao che, let alone carrying Chinese passengers! I bought the Wuling van for my brewpub (FUBAR), and even though the pub is closed, I have kept the van. At times I am tempted to "upgrade" to a nicer vehicle, but this is just so practical for carrying my dog and crap around. Funny thing is, the Shenzhen license plate is worth more than the car! Now that I"m moving back to Huizhou full time, and rarely need go to Shenzhen, I may finally be motivated to trade for a more refined car.... but it couldn't possibly have more character.

One of the wuling models here is Confero, same as older Honggguang, and people are usually reluctant to buy because of the weird design. This hongguang s model may sell better if sold in Indonesia, although the boxy and stiff model may still become concern for many. At least, this model is better than the older model.

The suspension is unsettled because it has no load in the back. The suspension is tuned so that it can handle heavy loads. And these work vans can sell well everywhere. Cheap basic vehicles are very compelling for companies who want the best bang for buck. Think about the Chery 3 and Great Wall ute when they entered Australia. The ute sold better than the sedan because businesses were keen to save money. No one wants to pay extra for extra features when it's going to get dirty and only last 2 or 3 years before they repeat.

Considering that Wuling is 50 percent GM, I don't think it would be a problem for them if they want to bring it to other countries and add some extra safety features. The look, however, might be a bigger problem.

Exterior from a Honda Stepwgn, a dashboard from any Land Rover product and steering wheel from a Tesla. Not bad for 10,000 RMB.

But then no airbags and esp. Cars entering Brunei needs the crash ratings too like NCAP/NHTSA except CNCAP *somehow this one is not accepted. Hence why you dont see new Chinese branded cars being sold in Brunei except the rebadged one which also been crash tested by reputable crash tester and hv added safety standards.

Depends where you want to drive. If you want access to the Shanghai city center and to drive on the elevated roads at all times of the day, then you’re going to spend well over 100,000 RMB for the privilege.
