I don't think that's true. In the 10 top player I think he might know the lowest theory. Magnus, aronian, so, Caruana, surely have more theory knowledge, maybe even nepo.

Do you even know what you are talking about ? No way Nepo knows more theory than Giri....Its quite a well known thing about Nepo that he forgets theory and figures things out on the board.

Makes sense. Back in 2001-02 around, I saw this dilema over indian rule vs international rule, I was like WTF. Even Queen placement was different in Indian style domestic small cities games- white Queen at white central house, black on black central house.

Blame Europe for most of the rules. Here are the rules of chess 1.0 and note I don't know the names of the original pieces. For instance, I believe one piece was the elephant. Pawns can only move one square at a time and attack like they do now. Promotions are a turn. Automatic promotions didn't happen until the late 1800s. Rooks can only move up to two squares up or down or side to side. Knights move as they do now. Bishops move diagonally on their own color up to two squares. They can jump pieces. Kings and queens can only move one square next to them. There was no castling. The object is to capture the opponent's king. Checkmating a king didn't happen until several centuries later.

@@theReal_WKD Check and checkmate are two different things. In chess 1.0, the pieces didn't move very fast and had limited range so it's doubtful one could do a modern checkmate. Duck chess has no modern checks or checkmates. It's also about capturing the king.
AD - so we're talking about Indian moves? *Slams* 1. B3 onto the board
I have read this in the books published in 60s and 70s. Basically because in ‘Indian Chess’ pawns move slower in the beginning the players of ‘Indian Chess’ went for slow development of pieces by playing short pawn moves followed by set ups that involved maneuvering behind the pawns (e.g. fianchettoed bishops). Such set ups eventually came to be called ‘Indian Defenses’. Influence of this Indian style of playing can be seen in Mir Sultan Khan’s games.
I knew this from Agadmator's channel but the way Anish explained it was so beautiful.

Wow 😱 Mind blown 👏🏻 It all makes more sense now
Woow this is very informative 👏👏
The initial rules taught to me by my grandfather were that pawns move one step at a time, even the very first move. So i can relate to this. Even when i leant later about 2 step the first time, it took me quite a lot of time to change.

If you go by texts, then Anish is right. But there are several 'theories' as to why those are Indian defences. One insane theory that I read was due to the then colonial administration by the British which oppressed the Indians and the country's growth in all spheres along with white supremacy. Thus not controlling the center (which is what the western world popularized) became a 'symbol' of that oppression for the Indians.
His English is accented, but Russian is perfect.
