As a Canadian, I'm not sure whether to feel insulted by this or not. We *really* don't like being mistaken for Americans! Seriously though, living next door to the States is like one of two things. It's sort of like living next door to the biggest bully in school when you're a decent, normal kid who just wants to get along with everyone. So you have to pretend to like him so you don't get wedgied into oblivion, but when he's not around you're the first kid in the class who'll say how badly you wish he'd just go die in a fire. There's also Robin Williams' classic "apartment over a meth lab" joke. It's a pretty good apartment, but you're stuck over the toxic fumes, the crazy meth heads, the noise, the fighting, the stray bullets, the SWAT team raids, and the knowledge that one day, everything downstairs is just going to blow up and probably take you with it. A few years back I was chatting online with a guy from Finland, and we were both very sorry about the countries that each other had to live next door to. We seriously couldn't decide which was worse - Russia or the States. We just knew that neither of us wanted to trade places.

There’s a great brazilian joke about it. At a certain point in history, the UN sent a message to all corners of Earth asking the following: “Please tell us what do you think about the scarcity of food in the World”. The eurpeans couldn’t answer it because they didn’t understand what scarcity of food was. African countries also couldn’t answer, for they didn’t know what food was. The americans couldn’t answer either, as they weren’t aware of what the World was. Lastly, argentines didn’t know what “please” means…

Good thing about Australia...they brought in all their Starbucks. and it failed because their coffee mannerisms are less preferable to standard Australian coffee shops. They closed down half of them, but are starting to bring them back just for the tourists. Suits us...we stay with our coffee shops, and don't have to put up with all the tourists interrupting our chats or Starbucks' inferior coffee. McDonalds was totally Australianised into Maccas and they created McCafe which serves a perfectly acceptable coffee.

The genius and irony of this bit is that it serves as a sociological double entendre of sorts -- making fun of Americans to a British live audience, but while doing so subtly pointing out all the stuff the Brits are guilty of themselves -- and delivered by an Irishman, no less. American education has been reduced to schools teaching children how to pass tests in order for their school districts to get the minimum, Federal funding that they need. Schools in the US haven't been teaching children how to think critically, haven't been teaching civics, how to survive in the world, etc. Combine that with the obsession of social media, the belief that reality TV isn't scripted, the epidemic of self-victimization, and that healthy food and living has gotten so expensive, and you get millions of people who are led by their basic instincts and a strange entitlement that they deserve a better life without putting the work into it. I'm not saying that everybody from the US is like that, but the people who tend to be problem for themselves and everybody else refuse to engage in any introspection and identify themselves as the problem in their lives.

@RokkitGrrl you are absolutely correct. My adult daughter took AP US History in 11th grade and she was not allowed to do independent research. Additionally, the book was filled with many factual errors and was clearly written by the left pushing their agenda. Luckily my husband and I are huge history buffs and we actively engage our children in political and world topics. We encourage independent research.

I was on a cruise ship once with a lot of Americans in the Mediterranean. They had this knack of pointing things out very loudly, which didn’t need to be said, like “look the coffee machine is over there“ but for some reason, they needed To Point at it and speak loudly enough, so the rest of the room could hear. I also had a couple of them behind me on the bus, admiring how peaceful and beautiful the Balkans were, when one of their party explained that the reason it was so beautiful was because they’ve never had any wars here. Informer Yugoslavia. My favourite was when I was in the pool, and one gentleman asked the other, what do you do, and both of them proceeded to explain what they had, not what they did.

The worst for me was a film of Hamlet, Branagh and no-one was interested but me, I love swimming but whoosh; 4 hours later 2 people in an otherwise empty viewing room would not shut up about To be or not to be you cannot make this stuff up; I got stubborn and sat there for another 4 hours after they left. So which is it you're proud of, which do you want to share, and who with? You couldn't have made a more "American abroad" statement if you'd tried. And btw, no one who's actually from either country refers to them as "the motherland". That's a peculiarly American affectation.

And if you come to many towns in Italy especially in the north you see what he is saying is true … and it makes me cry. It took just 20 years for it to drastically shift due to the globalization wave that swallowed cultural nuances and banished them to history. @@taxesdeathandtrouble.1886 Lets stop and think about this. Now the US went into Korea to support the totalitarian South Korean government they imposed. The North with China's help pushed them all the way back to the sea. WHO was it that came and bailed you out of that? The first gulf war after Saddam tried legally to stop Kuwait from slant drilling but the US refused to let the UN or any body so anything because US oil companies were profiting off stolen oil. So who was it who helped the US out,,,,same usual countries. Next the war in Afghanistan, turned out it had nothing to do with 9/11 but sympathy for the US ran high so again US allies stepped up and helped out. As it became clear they had been lied to and were dying for nothing at all they all withdrew. The US like Vietnam lost that one too. Same deal in the second gulf war, US allies helped them out to take a country that was at peace with the world and no threat. The US fabricated evidence for a war of US Aggression, some allies knew better and did not help this time while others did. In the end it was just about the theft of resources for the USA. In all of the 20th century the US has not won a war on it's own. It's started many but no won one. You know this is getting a bit one sidded.

I grew up in the UK. It is cold, wet, windy. The people are snobs, unfriendly and aggressive. They think they are special and superior; they love to mock others. The UK is ridiculously expensive and over taxed into poverty; just look at any UK high street to see how bad it is. Most activities in the UK are banned, and if not already banned are on the list to be banned. I moved to the USA. It is so much better than the UK in every respect. UK people love to denigrate the US but that is only to save their embarrassment on how bad the UK really is. The Americans do not denigrate the UK, no instead they enjoy how quaint and old fashion it is. Like something out of an old fairy tale.

@@inconnu4961 I left the UK. Worked around the world and emigrated to the US. The US is a much better place for working people than the UK.

Dylan is being INTENSELY unfair here. We do not have mass shootings every other day in this country! We have multiples of them per day, on average. :/

It seems old! Brits (or Irish people) smack-talking Americans. How novel! What fresh brilliance will they think of next? Maybe, "you know the difference between men and women?"
