I gotta say I disagree with you guys on this one. As an introvert, the WORST part of shopping is dealing with the people. I love being able to go right to the self checkout and avoid some long line filled with crazy Trump cultists (I live in a red state).

@The Young Turks, shifting the burden onto the customers is not a new idea. Restaurants have been doing it for years, paying their servers grossly under minimum wage and expecting the customer to tip so that the owner doesn’t have to pay their employees a decent wage.

Self checkout is NOT the issue. Self check out being your only choice is the problem.

I have to admit, I love when there is self check out available. I have bad social anxiety and love not having to interact with people while shopping. I just don't like that some stuff I can't bring to it, or are troublesome to do with it.

Self checkouts turn "cashiers" into security guards for spotting stolen merchandise. Talk amongst yourselves about that.

As an introvert,, I seek out self-check out every time.

i love self checkout. Its no as embarrassing to buy stuff and possibly be judged. When I was a cashier there was SOOO much judging of people on what they buy

I'm almost sure if you think you're being judged at a grocery store it's entirely self imposed shame. If you feel shame about what you're buying you're subconsciously going to pick up cues from the people around you that confirm your presupposition. The vast majority of people aren't paying attention to your groceries at all. What does it say about society that we would rather cooperate with machines rather than eachother ?

Why did you judge people on the items they purchased when you were a cashier? Maybe that’s the reason why you feel embarrassed.

I ❤ self checkout. I can pack my bags how I want (instead of having undo what the cashier did) and I can split payments without having to explain anything to anyone.

I love self checkout. Not having to talk to people is gold to me. Thank you!

If I use self check-out shouldn't I also get an employee discount for providing the labor?

I already use self check out 99% of the time. First of all, I tend to go to the supermarket either right after it opens, or as it’s about to close. So self check out is often the only option. I’ve gotten used to scanning my own groceries over the years. It’s not a big deal to me. I’m just thankful that the grocery stores I go to are not asking me to leave a tip.

I don't think of it as free labor. For me it's a convenience and time saver. Loved it when it came out and still do, but I don't shop for a family or ever have more than 5 or 6 items.

Self checkout is only meant to provide one thing: higher profit margins for the company. "Time saving" used to be the case, particularly if you had just a few items. Not anymore. I've traveled a lot over the last two years and Walmarts in all those locations will have 20 to 30 checkout lanes with only 3 or 4 being manned (on a good day) and long lines at each, while the self checkout lanes are ALSO backed up creating similar times standing in line.

Another great reason to not shop Walmart. Unless of course they're the only viable option in your area. I do know what you are talking about as I have been in the store.

I like self checkout. If i dont have a ton of things at the grocery store I always use it as its quicker. If i have a full cart then i wait in line because they are faster than me and im not blocking a self checkout from someone with just a few things.

There is a video of a mentally challenged guy trying to buy a bike and he is slow. The store called the cops and had the man arrested for being slow. The store was Target . They dropped charges after the video went viral. But the man was traumatized by the experience. If a majority of customers stuck together & continuosly refuse to use them the stores would be less dependent on self check out. Each one of those units cost $30,000.

That is not the auto-scanners fault, that is the stores' fault for not having a staffer/attendant there at the devices. It is also the store's fault for over-reacting to the incident. A small portion (very small) of it is the guy's fault for not asking for help. That said, in the last few months I've not seen any U-scan areas that did NOT have a staffer/attendant stationed there. Some with more than a half dozen have more than one (CostCo has one for every 3 machines) Bottom line: it is Targets fault, but not in installing the devices, but not having a monitor there. As for not using them... well, that's your right, but I think the majority will use them, and prefer them. You go ahead and keep your flip-phones and un-chip'd payment cards. It does not mean the Rest of Us are going to go back Into the Dark.

I've used self checkout at my local Tony's ever since they put the machines in and haven't looked back. It's quicker, 1st of all, for those of us who don't like being in stores for longer than you need to be. And most, if not all, stores still have regular cashiers you could use. It's more of a convivence thing.

As many have said, small loads is fine, but buying lots of groceries, or whatnot, should involve people to help.

The worst thing that can happen in self checkout: the system thinks you’re taking “too long” to scan the next item and voids the entire transaction so you have to take everything off the scale & rescan it all 💩

I work in a small Walmart in a small town. We usually have about 5 registers going in addition to our 7 self checkouts. We have heard rumors that when we have a remodel in the spring they're taking them out, and then we've heard their adding 5 more and leaving us with 4 regular registers. Walmart is a bit conflicted atm; putting customers to work didn't make them more money, paying us more didn't improve sales, and the online pick up is doing great but the system can only take so much activity before it crashes. Oh, and Cenk, yeah there might be one person watching you. And 1-3 cameras built into the self-checkout, depending on the model. And one very accurate HD camera right above the self checkout, as well as a group camera that can zoom in on anything in the area, and then our normal door cameras. The Eye in the Sky is always watching; sometimes, if they think you're stealing they just put that in a folder, and when you get to a certain amount, they have you arrested or trespassed from the store.

I prefer self checkout because I get to bag my on things carefully so nothing is damaged. If you try to bag your own groceries at some stores, you are looked upon as an evil Karen. No, I just don’t want my canned goods on top of my produce or one bag weighing 50 pounds while the other is light as a feather.

I dunno why you've got such a hate-on for this. I prefer self-checkout.

Cuz we're olds? In my family if you were born before the mid 90's you don't like self check out. The older you are the more you hate it. The younger you are the more you like it.

As an introvert I’m very happy self checkouts became a thing

I like the convenience of getting out of the storm quickly. Even before self-checkout each store has about 10 checkout Lanes but they only have three of them with cashiers there thus causing a backup. I don't like to stand in line and wait so I'd rather check my own groceries unless I have a big load

But when the cashier lines are all closed and there's 20 people in front of you who've never used the machine, and half of them are trying to pay with cash, it works the opposite way.

Funnily enough.... I'm ok with self-checkout because I FEEL like I go faster than most people. However, on the FEW occasions I go to Walmart, they have the greeter in charge of "checking" people's receipts. And nah. I'm not about to do that. Either you trust me to check out myself or you don't. If you don't, get a human to check me out. 😊

Ask yourself this: Did the removal of those jobs bring down the prices? Nope. Prices are still the same, they just pocketed the money at your expense. Why pay someone to run checkout when you can have customers do it for free?

Some stores are removing self checkout not only because of theft, but because they’ve determined two things: 1) people buy less overall when they are forced to use self checkout and 2) sales of high profit margin impulse purchase like gum and candy have dropped significantly.

I refuse to use them.

I like to pack it Tetris style in my backpack when I shop, but they explained that if you take more time then the average customer it triggers a check. An employee will take my neatly packed backpack, empty it and then force me to repack it again. That really pissed me off. So now I scan an pay quickly and then take my sweet time packing my bag, but it’s more of a hassle.

Staff get especially "irritated" if you use a re-usable bag to shop with - gotta use a basket, cart, or just your arms. Here is a trick I use - you scan all your stuff, heave it back in the cart with the receipt. Take past the scan area, park the cart, and put your stuff in the bags/backpack there. I used to do this when I used a backpack myself, and do it even now when I forget the bags in the car. Neighbor (we shop together) stands by the cart, I fetch the bags, and we bag inside. Haven't had a complaint yet. Then again, this is Canada. Your results may vary.

I love being my own bag boy, I look forward to stocking the shelves for free next!

We have these in the U.K. one year sainsburys, a large supermarket, apparently sold more carrots than they actually stocked. It’s relying on the customers to be honest about their purchases. Booths is a supermarket based in the north of England. I refuse to use these self service things because it’s vital to provide jobs for those that need them, especially working mothers who can work during school hours. You have to decide what your priorities are and mine is to keep jobs. After all, prices will not go down because they save money on till operators. Just bigger profits.

As another Brit, wondering if anyone else noticed Cenk use a derogatory word when he was talking. At least it’s derogatory word here.

In olden days before "super" markets you didn't shop for yourself; you went there, told a clerk what you wanted, and they retrieved it for you. I don't hear them complaining about having to walk around the store.

As someone who, when going out, avoids interacting with people as much as possible, I LOVE self checkout because it means I don't have to deal with anyone else.

I have a friend like that that prefers self scan over regular cashier. I don't mind so scan as long as it's a machine that takes cash but sometimes I just prefer a regular register.

I am visually impaired. I can shop for my groceries but I can’t read that little screen. It’s a problem.

Old people after roaming the market for an hour, pushing the cart around, and lifting groceries: 3 minutes to bag my own food and load my car, this is unacceptable😡

Oh dear lordy... I know that one. I can get my stuff, auto-checkout, put it in the van, then come back before neighbour has gotten to the cash. I ring hers through and bag it and it goes in the van. Used to be three of us, but #3 passed back iSept '23. And I'm pushing 60 hard.

I have social anxiety and been doing self checkout since they have been in use. I will use a regular cashier if I have a lot or if the self checkout line is too long. I bring my own bags and I hate feeling rushed when I try to bag my groceries in an organized way.

I can see some people feeling rushed when there is a big line-up (worst is at CostCo) so the solution to the bagging? Do it away from the scanner, after you have the receipt. Most stores have space between the cash areas and the doors, so you park the cart there, out of foot-traffic, and bag at your leisure. Anyone but staff says anything, ignore them. Its what neighbor and I do at CostCo all the time. MUCH less stress on not squashing the eggs or bruising the fruits & veggies. Hope that helps 😉 (* from a Boomer pushing 60 *)

As an introvert I really like self-checkout and I actually find it easy to use although I have seen a lot of people struggle with it and yes sometimes it does annoying things but the cashiers also do annoying things and can be very slow when scanning your items.

Try online order and pickup.. ya just drive up and they put it in your car for free .. tipping isn’t allowed… no BS, no interaction .. and more coupon savings.

I work retail, I work for cvs pharmacy, I’m a shift supervisor. I’m 36 years old and have worked for the company for a decade now. And I can’t tell you how frustrated I am with the way they handled self checkout. They call them “ assisted checkout” because after the backlash became large enough to scare them a bit they decided self checkout came with negative connotations so they decided to change the name of the machine while forcing this policy called the “green zone” where no one is behind the register and a single employee up front by the self checkout to act as a glorified greeter and babysitter. They are expected to stay there in this small invisible box at all times. We’ve had asset protection call the store directly to tell us we’re not in our appropriate place and makes the whole situation feel like it’s a punishment or even worse like we’re not capable of doing more or better anywhere else in the store. I’ve lost a dozen cashiers because of this policy and the stress that comes with dealing with angry entitled people telling us we’re wrong for what we’re doing when we have no choice it’s the job.

Hey, where do I send my bills to the stores for my fee for my time and work as a check out clerk?

It is an option. As an introvert who can work a scanner, i love self check-out.

I honestly don’t mind it too much if it’s a 5 or 10 items or less rule for self checkout. I don’t want someone forced to self checkout a god damned cart full of stuff.

I only use self check out. I will happily provide my 'labor' to get my 5-10 items and go without interacting with a cashier. And in the modern world if you can't deal with technology as simple as check out your life is going to be very difficult.

And that's exactly why i don't use self checks. I don't work at WallyWorlds. I refuse to go to them. I will do it for a percentage off my groceries.

It’s not all bad. Put a 3 dollar pastry in a donut bag and if magically becomes a 99 cent donut, niiiice!

I love self checkout. Saves me SO much money on my grocery bill.😂

Canadian here, and I agree. I can be in, grab my few things, and be back out in the time it takes my neighbor to get her order at the McDonalds at the entrance. Only time I get slowed down is when they let too many of the damned scanners go down/non-op.

Why? Because it'll be easier to accuse paying customers of stealing. I mean, that has increasingly been the American business model for the last 30 years. Treating the paying customer worse, than those who'd steal (i.e. Pirates). "Copy Protection", that doesn't protect, but causes issues for the people who actually bought a CD or DVD. Invasive DRM. Low quality streams, even if you paid for 4k, beause of some unrelated technicality. The constant risk of loosing your online purchases, because the EULA said so on page 27. And that affects only paying customers.

I only use self check out unless it's unavailable, and as someone who works retail I can tell you there's not a person in america who is willing to work as a cashier who couldn't find a job as long as they are hirable. Also scanning groceries isn't the work dealing with customers is the job , no one goes home after a job in retail and complains about how many items they scanned it's how many a**holes they had to deal with.

Agreed. For every 10-20 polite or even silent people, you get one person with a wallet full coupons, or one that wants to object and 'price-match' (and with everyone having Google on a smartphone, its an epidemic!) Only reason it didn't come sooner was no way to pay easily. But now, we can 'tap'. Oh, and a few rare machines can take bills (and gives change (only seen those at Dollarama) U-scan? I love it, best invention since being able to tap a credit card and go. Hope it stays. Don't ask me about that mandatory tipping on DoorDash... that's extortion. It's why I don't get delivery anymore.

Why not just embrace self checkout and automation and give everyone a basic income?

Not to mention a few years back (not sure if this continued) they were encouraging workers to use self check out bc managers were getting bonuses by how many ppl used the check outs thru the year. Which def inflated the numbers for how much ppl used them or wanted to use them.

I actually prefer self-checkout, it is much faster. However, I think there should be compensation or a discount for using it.

Well the discount is across the board. What they don't pay in salaries for the extra workers they keep the price for the goods lower. The only problem is that you get the same discount as the person who went to the full service checkout.

Well, USED to be, back in the day, speed wasn't a problem. The stores started making speed a problem (hiring slow people, not opening registers, etc) so that they could justify raising prices and implementing this and get suckers like you to be happy, when really you should be irked that they took away the thing you didn't like and replaced it with something far worse and more evil.

These are the same bastards that made cashiers essential workers during COVID..and risked their lives..and did not want to pay them enough for it.

One of my biggest pet peeves is that you do the check out and when you leave they want to look at your receipt. My comment to them is I just did my unpaid job that I was never trained to do, because your company doesn’t want to pay workers to do it. If you have self checkouts that company isn’t paying you to do their job, they give you No training, but then act like your stealing when you leave because they want to see your receipt and look over your goods. Well I just did your job because you somehow trusted me to do so. As your new employee that doesn’t get paid you can either let me walk out the door without going over my receipt item or do the dang job yourself.

In Canada, only CostCo asks for the receipt. NO-ONE else does. Why? Because most Canadians do not do the scan-scamming (as many KZread vids show). And at almost all 'cashier' lines, you still bag it yourself. So the choice: the shorter U-Scan line, or the Cashier line, with ppl whinging about coupons and 'low-price' comparisons... I'll take the U-Scan almost every time (very rarely is the cashier line shorter) and I agree, it allows you to break up receipts, or want a separate receipt for an insured item. Plus when neighbor and I shop, I use my credit card for the points, and neighbor gives me cash for the purchase. Win-win.

I love self-checkout. I can take my time, don’t have to wait (normally don’t) and if there is a new cashier on the lane, have to deal with them while they learn their job. And, not to mention, I am usually faster then the cashiers they use. I frequent a Walmart Neighborhood Market, and know the cashiers. If I know one of them is faster, then I use them, if not, self-checkout it is! Yes, people have lost their jobs, but if the store is going to offer it, I’m going to use it.

Bruh, imagine getting annoyed at someone that needs to learn their job. How else are they suppose to learn lol. I feel like a lot of y’all are just impatient and self centered lol. God forbid you have to wait a few extra minutes while someone learns what to do. I can tell you are one of those customers that goes into self checkout and still finds a way to complain when you are the one checking yourself out. Just annoying.

Do what I do. If you do your grocery shopping and realize there's only one One person working and they expect you to go to the self checkout just leave your entire grocery cart. I've done that at Walmart too because they have a self checkout and because they want me to download their app in order to put my credit card on instead of just using my Apple or Google pay.

That is just being an a-hole, and probably wasting food others might want/need. Anything perishable probably will not get back to the proper area in time, so it ~has~ to be disposed of (* meat, dairy, frozen-foods for example *) You ~could~ just ASK for a cashier to assist you... most stores will supply someone unless you are there just before closing (an a-hole move in itself) On the other hand... As for apps: I will not EVER put a shopping or payment app on my phone. I won't even log into Google or my e-mail with it. The Internet of Things can bite my scrawny behind. Take That, Alexa. Also, any service that insists on me loading their app gets told "Don't have a smart-phone, sorry". A company that would insist on this action does NOT deserve my patronage. Plus, if I lose the phone (or it gets taken) that is like losing the passwords & card-access the phone was given. Big Negative.

I refuse to use self-check out. I had a clerk insist that I use self-check and when I said I didn't want to use it, she argued with me. I gave her my full cart and walked out. I will never, ever use it!

The only time that has happened to me was at a Wal-Mart where a store employee was stationed at the self-checkout and insisted on me using one of the self-checkouts. I let her take the cart, scan the items, take my money to do the transaction with the register, and put everything back into the cart. Effectively, she just did the same thing that would have happened at a regular cash register, minus the unloading and loading of the cart. They no longer have an employee stationed there like doing what she did and I still refuse to use self-checkout; another reason why I don't go to stores like "Five and Below".

I prefer self check out. Fastr for me and more accurate

I personally like self checkout It's quicker than standing in a line waiting for people to be checked out by a very slow cashier. I like being able to see what the price are of the product as I'm paying for it right then and there. I can bag my stuff up exactly the way I want it to be bagged I don't have to use those cheap plastic bags I can get paper bags and do it all myself.

I like self checkout. It is faster, I can bag my groceries properly without crushing things, and I don't have to talk to anyone.

I love self checkout. its alot faster and its easy . I'm in and out. Not in a long line as a grocery cashier line with people with a full cart in front of me while I have a few items only. I'd be pissed off if they took out self checkouts. If you can't figure out a self checkout then there is something wrong. Self checkout isn't meant for those with a full cart either. And you tell me someone like a Cenk cant read the prompts on a screen at self checkouts? Wow.

I used to fight fire with fire. I will NOT self-checkout and if I stand in the line too long, I will leave my full cart in line and leave. Let the store hire more stockers to put the frozen things back before they spoil. I now have a system where I get a real person every time, but I will keep it to myself.

I worked as a cashier for years (had multi- cashier jobs at the same time and still couldn’t afford to live on my own, many roommates) , it’s the worst job ever, (became an exotic dancer because it’s less degrading, and it actually pays the bills) …its minimum wage/non livable wage….standing in one place all day, the public/ppl are awful, no dignity, you don’t even get a regular schedule, it’s different hours all the time (you can’t have any routine like eating, sleeping, bathroom) , if your sick they punish you by cutting hours for the whole month or worse, benefits cost too much and I can go on….i love self serve as a cashier and customer…the machines can have those shitty jobs…as a customer I like doing it myself, privacy and it’s fast/in and out….

I forgot to add…it would be nice, but I know it’s fantasy, take the money they save from using self serve and putting it towards the workers they do have, better than mini-wage…a decent wage, and more consistent schedules …bc so what if there will be less jobs, it’s doesn’t pay good or benefits (if your single, you have to work many jobs already, if they pay you good they you wouldn’t have to work so many jobs, so it would be ok for there to be less job openings…these jobs leave you financially and mentally defeated as is….

Self checkout is the best thing that ever happened. I can’t wait until they automate fast food restaurants. The people they hire in these places don’t want to work. The quality of service in these businesses had dropped significantly.

I actually like self checkout. Most of the time, I feel like I get through the line faster, and I bag my items the way I want them arranged. But... I was watching a video the other day that was talking about people being arrested for failing to scan items accidently, and having to lawyer up and go through huge hassles to clear their names, which has made me wonder if it's worth it. I don't know how often that happens, but it could seriously disrupt your life if it happened to you.

I stand in line just because i don't work there. When i go there's no rush. I'm willing to wait. Nothing is funnier then telling an employee, "I'm good waiting". Lol

I really hate self checkout especially when people are behind me in line. It sounds corny, but I get performance anxiety because I swear I can feel them judging me.

I love self checkout, not having to talk to anyone and being able to pack the bag the way i want too. I prefer self checkout

Same. Self checkout is a godsend.

I won't use self checkout. I get mad and tell them, Why should I shop at your store, spend my money and do my own checkout and bagging. I have a vision problem and can't always see what I'm doing. Not our job.

I remember when self checkout didn't exist and having to wait in line behind 3-4 other customers, each with full carts. I rarely have to wait for self-checkout and can usually bag everything as fast as a clerk + bag boy. I'm not the type who needs to hire someone to do every little easy life chore for me. If that's your thing, so be it -- most grocery stores have a mix of self-checkout and assisted checkout lanes. To each their own.

stop using it and demand staff to check out

Answer: not enough cashiers, at least willing to work for peanuts. DONE! Next question!

Where are you living at in this country making $37,440 a year?

The other thing I notice is the elimination of live checkouts for customers having 10 items or less. So you end up standing in line 10 minutes or more having 10 items or less waiting for a self-checkout to open up. Note that multiple identical items in self-checkout must be individually scanned vs live checkout that can enter multiple items once.

Odd... I've found that Walmarts don't have that "place item on the tray" screamer, so you can wave your "frozen dinner" over the scanner and count the beeps, and then just move all the boxes at once. Dollarama? Screams after EVERY item. Bet they turn THAT option off pronto. Would be good to have a "repeat item" onscreen key though... next upgrade perhaps? Can't beat the IKEA though, as every station has a ~wireless~ hand-unit, so it's "blip-blip-blip" as you flash each item code, and you're done, no trying to get the item over the scanner like in other stores. Oh, our Walmarts have two 'lines': a few items, and 'more items' ; so we don't get behind Mr.Shopping-for-the-Apocalypse. Then again, that's Canada for you.

The less i can interact with people, the better. Its self checkout for me.

If I have to check myself out, why should I also pay .25 cents per bag as well? I was a cashier for years and it pisses me off that they are so greedy.

Bags in Canada were mostly free, if not, a nickel or dime each. Now you buy a re-usable, or bring-your-own. I like that much better, except the bags were perfect for going down the apartment building trash chute... (*peeve*)

I prefer to use self check. faster than normal check out, and I never have to worry about someone mishandling my groceries...

I can’t do the self checkout because it makes me dizzy because people in those lines want you to speed up and I can’t. I have to go at a pace that doesn’t give me vertigo and that angers everyone. But I know no one would ever believe that. I’m retired and in my 60s so a lot of things have changed in me over the years.

This is why I believe that both methods can and SHOULD be in place together. Not everyone has the dexterity or co-ordination to use the scanner (people with Parkinsons for example) and need the cashier'd line-ups. Others have mental, emotional and/or psychological issues, and find the u-scan terminals easier. Why should we have one and not the other? NO Reason. I think having it the way most stores have it now, with about a mix of both methods. I'd really have to think of a larger store that didn't have both options. Wait. IKEA has auto-tellers, but there is ALWAYS staff there to assist, so it could be considered the perfect mix. As for other people... to h*ll with them. Go at your own pace! If the staff ask, you can explain. I'm starting to have 'issues' myself (vision & arthritis at almost 60) but if anyone tries to hurry me up, they is gonna get a loud, rude earful.

Customers should get a discount for checking and bagging their own items.

The tech on self checkout is better than these two realize especially in places like Walmart and Target. Won't be long until checkout is basically putting your cart in front of a camera that takes a picture and immediately knows everything you bought and what to charge you.

The flip side is the cashiers who used to staff the checkout lines are now running in the store gathering groceries for people who order online. At my Target last weekend, only two line were open other than self checkout, but I saw at least six staffers shopping in the store for other customers. I wonder how much stores have really saved with self checkout if they still have some or all of those cashiers working elsewhere in the store?

That was my thought, any employees that they don't have running the registers are now working the pickup in these stores. Which if you don't like doing the work for them should be ideal for you as they no longer even require you to find your own items or even load them into your car.

I work as a cashier, I hate it when I have to work at self checkout. I actually have to stand by and wait until someone needs help. I will get in trouble if no one is at self checkout and everyone is at the normal registers. Almost every single one of my other cashiers hate it too. So if you say to us that you hate self checkout, we will agree with you. We hate it too.

Interesting ... Personally i think a mix of both is the best. I always buy a lot at once. Something like 250-300 euro. The entire thing is full of stuff. All the people with around 50 euro just go to the quick self check-out.

What store u work at? At Redners in MD, it is only self checkout after 8 pm. I will go without food before i put 2wks worth of food thru that stupid thing.

@@msavina9129 I work for Lowe’s. It’s a good job but everyone hates self checkout. I get customers all the time complaining about it. Especially the older generations.

Why pay a cashier... their paycheck, benefits, HR, etc... when the idiot customer will do it themselves.

How about at our Flagship Kroger at 7 pm on a Saturday night, there were 0 cashiers and 10 self-checkouts managed by two people? Utter chaos.

Also, the employees used to be there to HELP us and give us good customer experience. Now, they are tasked with policing us. A VERY different POV

they literally are starting to wear body cameras here in Australia. Everyone is looked at as a potential thief. it's ridiculous

I prefer self checkout . I don't have to listen to chat between the customer before me and the clerk. I rarely have to wait in line. And my milk doesn't get plopped on top of the bread 😒

One of the main reasons we have self check out isn't only to cut labour, but a reaction to issues of recruitment. Also stating that we have less cashiers is also function of e-commerce more and more transactions are online hence needing less cashiers.

If I have a few items and am really in a rush, I’ll do self checkout. If I have a full cart, I want somebody scanning my items while I bag them. And yes, 20 years ago somebody would have bagged for me, but I actually want to bag my groceries - I put items together deliberately so when I get home I can put each bag where its stuff goes and unload them immediately.

That's a good point. Offer a discount if you use self checkout. Instead you're supposed to do the job of the cashier and still pay full price.

I'd say we get 1% discount on merchandise, 2% on groceries. Just like the credit cards do these days. We used to get free bags, but too much waste. I loved 'em as they were perfect for going down the building trash chute. Now I have to buy them.

I’m old enough to remember gas attendants filling tanks and washing windshields and checking oil and filling tires. Then they raise gas prices and eliminate service. We is getting ripped off

That’s why we should not use self checkout. For a whole trolley of groceries, it takes longer and it’s infuriating doing their job. I don’t use self checkout. Hate it. Service stations don’t have “service”. It’s sad.

I use self checkout, ATMs, and self serve gas pumps. How many jobs have we lost ?? If there is a way to avoid having to talk to a cashier I will do that.

markets fluctuate and so does technology and job demands.

I can't be punished for ringing up my purchases wrong, *because the company never gave me any training whatsoever on how to use these machines.*

Where I am in the Caribbean, we have, what I think, is the perfect balance. 3 Self checkouts with an attendant for assistance, in addition to the regular staffed check-out counters. They basically converted the express line to self checkout stations, so same amount of staffing, but convenient to customers.
