He DID NOT embarrass himself. These are facts.

In the 1918 pandemic the states didn't do huge lock-downs and it was the flu itself that imposed big drops in business activity. There wasn't a lot of business data of that time but thanks to daily papers business activity got reported. Doctors were overloaded with work. Industrial plants were reported to be under great stress. Transportation departments reported almost a 50% drop in business. And this happened in a time when there was no Bush plan and no multiple states imposing lock-downs. The Cumberland Telephone Company reported a loss of business due to workers not showing up for work. Mines shut down for extended periods of time and there was 50% reduction in industrial production. Merchants were reporting anywhere from a 50 to 70% decline in business. Retail grocery businesses reported a 30% decline in business. This was how the economy was affected without lockdowns in 1918. And because we in 2020 were increasing in our carelessness with regard to the virus those self imposed lockdowns like they experienced in 1918 were beginning to surface in 2020. But we avoided much of the fate of 1918 because we took early precautions despite the poor leadership at the federal and some state levels. Many people, showed common sense and began wearing masks, social distancing, protecting the elderly and much more. And today there are vaccines and medical advancements that has helped a lot to prevent deaths. Believe it or not they wore masks in 1918 but often the masks were made of things like cloth which didn't help a lot. But when we fail to learn we die. In 1918 there were huge disruptions in supply chains. Supplies were moved by rail, horse and buggy, Ford Model Ts, Model TTs and Model As. There were trucks, Stewart trucks, Ford Runabouts used by mail carriers and all types of vehicles. But the huge problem was labor supply shock. (In 2020 labor supply shock was caused by things like a fear of contracting the virus, lack of child day care and such. And today's shortage of labor created a bidding war for labor which resulted in increased wages and a fall in production and output.) Just as the transportation department reported a 50% drop in passengers in 1918 there were also a huge drops in drivers and delivery people. The declines in business was more often due to business shutdowns. Consumers were buying less during the 1918 pandemic but manufacturers were also making less. In 1918 due to cutbacks in manufacturing, mining and the like caused by labor shortages and disruptions in supply and deliveries unemployment began rising and up to what is now estimated from 4% to 8% in 1918 through 1920. So it's fair to say that supply dropped as much or more than did demand. People have a need for food, clothes, shoes, shelter and the like but business, once interrupted, has no real need or ability to rush back to normal. So as demand dropped supply dropped worse still. So what is inflation and how does it come into play? In short inflation is excess demand chasing scarce supply. (Too much money chasing too few goods.) When there are shortages and no available alternatives to the shortages then people begin bidding wars for goods thus driving up prices. In 1918 inflation was at about 17% and it remained high until 1920 when average inflation went from 23% in June of 1920 choking off the ability of consumers to buy and them plummeting to 3% by December of 1920. Businesses were destroying themselves with persistent shortages. But then in 1921 the worst possible economic situation developed for the business community....deflation (negative inflation.). Inflation had fallen to negative 15% by June of 1921. That's a crisis for business. Can you image producing goods and having to sell them at a lower price than it took you to make them? Deflation persisted all through 1921 and 1922 then half the year in 1924 and 1926 and again all throughout 1927 and 1928. Deflation killed the economy. And while the wealthy rested confident in their continued success it all came tumbling down resulting in the great depression. History is repeating itself because our leaders are ignorant about history. The pandemic of 1918 slowly and methodically lead to the crash of 1929 and the great depression. We didn't want to wear masks in the 2020 COVID pandemic, I get it, we wanted freedom. Well we got what we wanted; the freedom to kill the economy. You think this is bad? Just wait. We needed leadership when the pandemic hit and our President was a child in a loaded diaper and he injured this economy and now it is dying with one infection known as inflation. But just as inflation cut the necks of the business community 1924 it's cutting the necks of business in 2024.

Inflation has really hurt the working class. Home prices, car prices for new and used, insurance costs for home and auto, and more, is all rising. The last two years have been extremely tough for me and friends of mine. I watch shows like Morning Joe telling us that the economy is good, our perception of it is wrong. I will never vote for Trump, but to tell me it's my perception, is just gaslighting. Wasn't it Carville who said "It's the economy stupid?" Junk fees are a start, but we need more help than that. I am hoping we are not looking at 2008 all over again. I think there is a lot of pain coming in housing and auto manufacturing.

I'm in my 50s. The world has passed me by. I'm still trying to catch up, but it's not easy. He's 80. The race (essentially) is over. People have moved on. In their thinking, in their actions, businesses exist today that did not 30 years ago. Businesses from 30 years ago are gone (tear for BlockBuster). It happens. I just try to realize how lucky I am that I lived long enough to see it happen.
