    Democracy is not good or bad by itself. It's merely a means to an end. All people want to eat better, live better, be better. If Democracy achieves that end, it's good, if not, it's bad. A case may be made for the ends to justify the means, but means can never justify the ends. Before Libya's color revolution, they had universal healthcare, universal free college education, and free housing upon marriage. After Libya had democracy, their people's social welfare is gone, their living standard dropped, their life expectancy dropped. In this case, Democracy is, in fact, evil, because it achieved an evil end. If you think of Democracy as good, even in cases where it decrease people's life expectancy, it's a sign that you've been brainwashed, and need to make a conscious effort to undo your indoctrination. Gaddhafi's dictatorship that brought universal healthcare, free college, free housing, higher life expectancy to Libya, an African nation, is, objectively speaking, better than the democracy that replaced it. This is an objective truth that debunks the subjective bias we've been brainwashed with since childhood.

    I really hate to tell you this, but as someone who has worked in the sphere of businesses who receive government contracts I can tell you that this was how they talked about these places for years. People (average ordinary travelers and the like) have always tried to give a more empathetic lens to these countries and communities and were criticised heavily about their position on the perspective of some these 'global or multi national businesses' and their perspective when it came to how they treat the local population and their overall ESG score. It fell on deaf ears. Now more of these populations know the truth. That's their attitude. You're their way to gain a dollar or dime "their lunch money".

    Last time two superpowers began looking at Latin America as a power struggle to gain more support we had a wave of US-supported coups and dictatorships. In Argentina, up to 30.000 people went missing due to the will of keeping other ideology off their "backyard", one of many countries affected by Plan Condor to keep the Soviets out. Over 80.000 people confirmed killed or missing, according to surveys found in Paraguay. Almost two decades of repression and fear in the south cone. It does seems history's destined to repeat.

    The ColdWar was very unfortunate, and was quite destructive. The U.S.S.R. ( and China, to a lesser extent) did pose a significant threat and required substantial resistance. The U.S.'s predilection for economic warfare - and regime change, and support for dictators - were all questionable tactics, and cast a shadow on U.S. history. I am stunned that US invaded Iraq on false pretenses, and then followed with attacks on Afghanistan, Libya and Syria. While I agree that Ukraine ought not be a Russian vassal, I'm horrified that U.S. policy involved ignoring the Minsk II agreements, and Stoltenberg & Blinken insisting on having Ukraine join NATO. U.S. policy to Russia would be apt if Russia were still Communists intent on destroying us (which is not what is happening).

    I'm a Jamaican who has lived in the US for 24 years, and Cuba is only 90 miles from us. We love Cuba and the Cuban people. America has strangled the Cuban economy for the last 40+ years, and that couldn't break them, and America has sponsored the worst and bloodiest election in Jamaican history, by giving the opposition guns, because the other side were close to Cuba. America has done nothing but brain drain my country, and explore it for cheap labor, now I can proudly say that China has been building much needed infrastructure in our country, and its a good look. America actually took notice as to what has been happening, and wanted to make their presence felt, so they sent an admiral of the navy to deliver their message. Not a diploma, someone from the military. Message received loud and clear, and we are pressing ahead full steam. We may live in your backyard, but the land that we are on is ours.

China sees us as partners and allies. I would prefer a thousand times to have a brotherly relationship with the USA since we are brothers on the American continent but it seems that the USA does not want a Brazil with more than 200 million inhabitants to be a power because they see us as rivals... so we will embrace the opportunity that our Chinese brothers are giving us. china is already our biggest partner and we are going to fight for the fall of the dollar so as not to be hostage to future sanctions coming from the USA since the USA uses its currency as a weapon. Long live Brazil and long live China. as my mom says... we have to care who cares about us. USA doesn't care about its brothers in the southern hemisphere... unfortunately!

The problem is: in the last 4 or 5 years China has become our biggest comercial partner. When the chinese government demonstrated its disconfort with the public opinions of Ernesto Araújo about China the brazilian government had no choice but let him go. The business people here demanded some response from the president. We share the same democratic values as the american people and the american culture is dominant over here. There is also a lot of distrust towards China in most brazillian minds and many many people don't like the Idea of a chinese influence over south America due their autocratic regime but I must be honest and say that: this is changing. And I don't see the USA doing anything to prevent that and regain it's position. Even the military - the most pro USA group in our society - are starting to move towards China. Something I never thought possible. Basically the chinese understand that with business the political influence is a natural consequence and America seems to believe it is the other way around.

    As Argentinian I can say that China presence here is do to the US favouring UK relationships down in the Atlantic. The UK doesn't want investments to come to Argentina so they pressure the US not to invest here in anything. I remember that China offered to build and invest on a sea port in our province of Tierra del Fuego so our ships could travel easier our goods, the ambassador of the US along side the female general came all the way down here to order our Governor to say "no" to China, so he ask them and offer the US to invest on the infrastructure and they responded that "the US isn't interested in that project and we don't want to ruin our relationship with the UK our closest ally" so there you all go. It may be difficult to believe, but China's one party state essentially has to *represent all* 100% of Chinese interests (or at least 80-90%) because there is no other party to blame for any mistake. Whereas the U.S's two party state only has *partial representation* by either the Democrats or the Republicans who represent maybe around 51% of American's interests? (P.S Some believe the real figure is actually just 1% of American's interests, if you know what I mean.)

  • @Antares2
    @Antares2 Жыл бұрын

    Imagine calling it "our hemisphere" and referring to Chinas trade deals with the american countries as "eating our lunch". Can you get any more imperialistic? Your hemisphere? I'm pretty sure there's a lot of nations, (at least to the south of you), that would strongly disagree with such a statement. The hemisphere doesn't belong to USA. Also, "eating our lunch" sounds like a freudian slip that is casually admitting that the american continents is nothing more than sustenance for the USA. Absolutely awful lack of respect for other nations. Also, this constant idea of calling latin american and caribbean countries the "backyard" of the US ... It's very patronizing and disrespectful. It's like they are not "real" countries. They don't get to live along the street, so they have to stay in our "backyard". You see the exact same with the smaller pacific countries, like the Solomon Islands. They are not treated as a fellow country but as the "backyard" of Australia. And predictably, the people of that nation are getting pretty tired of being treated like that. Mia Mottley of Barbados was very clear in an interview with BBC how she felt about that characterization; pointing out that they are NEIGHBORS to the USA and should be treated as such. Smaller, yes, but no less a country than anyone else. The main reason USA is losing its grip is because they have zero diplomatic tact and skill. They have a failing economy and less and less to offer. They have a very unsteady foreign policy that changes every 4 or 8 years, often 180 degrees. Something for example Iran has gotten extremely "done" with. Also, when all their "foreign aid" consists of arming rebel groups and building american military bases, while all the actual money never leaves the USA. They end up lining the pockets of Raytheon, Lockheed Martin and the rest of the ghoulish death merchants over there. USA built up all its power abroad through force, or threats of force. The only reason they allied with western Europe after WW2 was to get a strategic beachhead against the Soviets. Not because they ever cared one bit about the well-being of the people in Europe. They've tried the same on all other continents, and for a while it worked. But now, there are other powers that can be much more beneficial do deal with. So why wouldn't they? China only demands that you stay out of their internal affairs, and they'll stay out of yours. With that as a basis they'll trade with you and invest in all kinds of projects. And no, it's not a debt trap. This has been debunked by economic experts over and over, yet keeps repeated in a desperate attempt to smear China. In the end, it's a VERY good deal for countries that have been bullied by USA for decades. It's the same thing in Africa where the nations still carry massive scars from western colonial times. Then in comes China and treats them like fellow nations instead of pawns. No wonder they sign onto BRI. "our hemisphere" ... don't make me vomit. (Edited for a typo that annoyed me, I meant to say all the "actual money" instead of "actualy money") Edit: Thanks for all the likes and positive responses. Glad to see that more people reacted to this blatant show of "american exceptionalism" at its worst.

    What the the US failed to mention is that the vast majority of the countries that China does business with approach China to do business with China, not the other way around. They saw the great results China has brought for its business partners and so they want to be a part of it. So all of these "China is seeking to put countries into debt traps and lure countries into its sphere of influence" accusations by the US is simply another lie made up by the anti-China propaganda machine known as the USA! It's getting to the point where the US's entire foreign agenda is to sit back and watch what China is doing and then go in there to try to mess things up for China! The US has no strategy nor any good intention for other countries whatsoever when it comes to its foreign policies. Its entire strategy is to undo whatever China is doing with other countries with whatever force it takes to undo it! It's such a loser's mentality! I want to say the US is the Tonya Harding of international competition, but using Tonya Harding as an analogy for the US's shady ways is an insult to Tonya Harding since Tonya Harding doesn't do 1/1 billionth of the crimes that the US government does on a daily basis!

    Well as an European who has always been sceptical about the US "intentions" when trying to save the world for just another time, that scepsis turned into somewhat hate when Ukraine invasion started and i spent quite some time reading into things to gain some knowledge. From what ive read and the conclusions coming from that I dont think your thesis is far from reality. No matter which so called partner/ally of the US we are talking about, if given country crosses US interests, they will feel it one way or the other. Sanctioning companies in economic areas threatening the US economy, setting up regime changes or if thats not enough and the country isnt scary military wise, the US will simply send you back to middle age with its military. China is a great example, as the US simply cant hold them in place, as much as they try. Back in the days they accepted the "One China policy" but as Taiwan has a huge strategic value with its position in front of Chinas main land, they are willing to defend it and permanently annoy China with it. Sanctioning Chinas Chip industry to the point that a company in the Netherlands gets threatened to get sanctioned and the goverment of the netherlands getting involved so that company doesnt provide China the machines they asked for. As far as South America is concerned i guess Venezuela is a very recent example of the US definition of human rights. As long as youre giving us the natural ressources we ask for, you are free to live. But if you dont let Exxon or whichever company take your oil, we will send your people into poverty and the country in pure chaos, by accepting a president who didnt get voted. Actual disgrace to the world that country

    I dont think that will change anything. People call it America simply because it's the name. The same way we call Mexico even though it's technically the United Mexican States. I think the problem is that people fail to see context, which is more of an individual problem. Many people also differentiate the two by calling the continents "the Americas" or "Las Americas". What you're saying is completely minor and irrelevant to the actual problem and relationship dynamic.

    China’s modern foreign policy is fundamentally different to the US. Western commentators fail to understand China’s seemingly altruistic actions and therefore read into it with suspicion. But China often plays the long game and understands that it’s more beneficial to build up other countries to become economically stable future trading partners. On the other hand western projects in developing countries typically involve one-sided resource extraction and exploitative deals for short or mid term gains. China also has the advantage of being more centralised, if the party feels as though a Chinese corporation is making them look bad o the world stage they have the power to exert control over or punish those corporations, whereas American and European private companies are under no such threat and can behave with impunity

    China is currently *at peace and not at war* with any country, since our last major conflict in 1979. Instead of making war, China is building infrastructure like _roads, railways, highways, bridges, tunnels, powerstations, dams, ports, airports,_ etc and investing in developing countries like Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and also African countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Chad, Sudan, Ghana, Mozambique, Tanzania, etc. Whereas the United States is *warmonger* being involved in Gulf War, Iraq War, Afghan War, Libyan War, Syrian War, Yemen War, etc, even in the 21st century. USA is bombing in those Middle Eastern countries and enacting regime change by cutting off their "heads" (Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi, etc) and then installing their own US puppet governments in place. If anything, it sounds like the United States is a threat to global peace and stability.

Sri Lankan government found that leasing Hambantota port to Chinese companies for 99 years was a better deal than the earlier arrangement, so it did that to free up Sri Lankan revenue to channel elsewhere. In 99 years time, the lease would have expired and Hambantota port returned to Sri Lanka. The current Sri Lankan banktrupt was caused by other factors like Russo-Ukraine conflict. Japan actually holds more Sri Lankan debt compared to China.

Investment creates jobs and opportunities ....this helps develop and build an economy which further creates more jobs and opportunities which helps a nation grow rich which encourages trade which generates income to pay back that investment ...a win-win situation ....or do you prefer the hand outs that temporarily eases a situation and selling your resources to multinational corporations in one off deals so your country doesn't own those resources anymore and your country is run by oligarchs and elites who make money from the selling of those resources but care not for the ordinary people ? They win , you lose ,zero sum game that is the other option. ??

    I’m from the USA and being politically informed on an international level since I was a teenager, I have always found the foreign policies toward South and Central America destabilizing, always backing the wrong side of issues, no matter which party holds power. The is mainly true bc corporations have too much influence. This means the US government makes its foreign policy based on the financial interests of those corporations and then back it with its military presence. This has caused regimes like the Christiani government in El Salvador to brutalize its people, while we arm and train their death squads. And that’s only one example with the Reagan administration’s help.
