Why Is This Caviar $450 An Ounce?

Caviar is priced based on two criteria: desirability and scarcity. There’s plenty of relatively affordable caviar from fish like herring, which costs about $7 per ounce. The caviar from an albino ossetra sturgeon, costs $450 for one ounce, or $7,300 for just over one pound. Sturgeon are a prehistoric fish that can live to be over 100 years old, grow to 28 feet in length and weigh more than 4,500 pounds.

Not worth the money to me but to wealthy people $450 a ounce is peanuts so I can understand why they would pay thousands for caviar.

It's a rare fish, quite selfish to so actively interrupt their breeding. Farmed fish are not a solution to wild population problems. Big problems with salmon in Scotland with farmed fish weakening the already depleated population.

My favorite caviar is, of course, sturgeon, unfortunately I don't order it often, but I always choose Lemberg caviar. It is simply exquisite and the price is more affordable than the rest!

It’s not caviar unless it’s from the sturgeon fish so you’re incorrect with your introduction you need to fix that. It’s only Roe, which means fish eggs, when it is not from the sturgeon fish.

I live in Syria, and we earn 20$ per MONTH for an average Civil servant job. Even if I reach some developed country, Caviar for me would still represents an insult for the emaciated kids all over the globe. The proper question should be : what worths more a spoon of the luxurious caviar or a cursed_by_birth family being relatively well_fed for a month?

Fishing for white sturgeon in Northern California by the Sacramento River. Please !! DO NOT fish for GREEN sturgeon at all. DO NOT REMOVE them from the water at all too. Accident do happen, but do released the green sturgeon immediately For California, a FYi, you’ll need a sport fishing license and not a regular fishing license. A sturgeon report card because you are required to write the location, date, time, and length. You’re required to only use a single barbless hook.

So albino sturgeon is more expensive. This is white supremacy. Plz support black owned black sturgeon. Colorism is a micro aggression that cascades into many facets of human thinking. Something so small such as pricey albino sturgeon can create the implicit bias of white being better. As long as white stands for pure and black stands for darkness and evil etc etc racism will never end. -Emily Acab (they/them) Political science major
