    my take on this movie is that everyone was on the top of their game except for garland's writing which is one of the most important parts. it sucks because he obviously can write good (e.g. annihilation, 28 days later, ex machina) so ill remain cautiously optimistic for his next one that hes directing to see if it's just a fluke or if he has really just fallen off. other than that im excited to see what jessie buckley does next because she was great in both this and im thinking of ending things (another one of my favorite movies)

    I think this wasn't Garland's story to tell. He clearly is deeply connected with scifi/philosophical themes (which reflect on how good his past movies are), but of course he won't understand feminism in a way that, say, a WOMAN may be. I mean, if you are a man writing about feminism without even consulting women as much as possible, then you are just shooting yourself in the foot

    I think the movies biggest problem is that as much preaching it does against men’s misogyny and toxic masculinity, the main character is only defined by her trauma and abuse. She had no personality besides being assaulted and being mentally scarred from it. Felt ironic that a movie trying to attack men the entire time portrayed women in such a sexist way lmfao

    Absolutely BASED take. I was very excited about the film and I understood what he was going for, but it seems like he kept hitting the same beat over and over and over and in the end. It felt more like a short film extended into a feature but not in a purposeful or intentional way. Jessie was brilliant as always and Rory was excellent as well, but by the hour mark it said what it was trying to say and everything else felt superfluous. Hope to see more movie reviews should another piss you off as much! 👍👍👍👍👍👍

  • @eduardosilveira6974

    @eduardosilveira6974

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes! Promising Young Woman has a lot more nuance than Men. Just look at the way PYW uses violence. Yes there are some pretty graphic images of woman suffering from male violence, but they always have a point. Otherwise they would just feel exploitative, which is exactly how this movie feels. Remember reading an essay or something about how most horror movies seem to take pleasure (and therefore the audience as well) in showing a female body being subject to violence. Female death scenes in movies are always longer and more gruesome, which seems to imply what i mentioned above. Either way, Men fails to acknowledge such discussion around the male gaze in my opinion

    It's sad how there are so few true feminist movies that were made by women with an understanding of the subject, talent and real passion to express their feelings and frustrations out there. What we get is a movie about nothing, with a plot that could be summarized by "men do bad things and the lead doesn't like it", a movie that doesn't bring up anything substantial and could only be credited for being another topic MRAs will go ape shit over and another reason for them to bitch about feminism. I also don't agree with some of your criticisms in this video, but I still don't like the movie, just for other reasons.

    @@jaytb5815 Promising young woman is anything but "goated," The main character does nothing but give skeezy men a slap on the wrist. I could go further in detail but that movie was a joke of a feminist film. -She takes matters into her own hands by luring in weird men, scares them, but ultimately does nothing. -There's even a moment in the movie where a scene ends in a way that just screams "and everyone clapped" (where she made the black dude run away) -She set up the dean at her old college's daughter to get raped or taken advantage of. -She DIES in the final conflict against the guy who hurt/violated/killed her friend and then left all the evidence to the police, which from a feminist perspective is a fat fucking joke because rapists are hardly ever convicted even with evidence, also like if you take matters into your own hands why let the police take point? I'm tired of seeing PYW brought up as a good feminist film when it's only good to white women.

    Let me just speak on the writing credit part. Even if Alex wanted to give Jessie screenplay credit, that doesn’t mean that can happen. There’s a lot of rules about screenwriting credit and lot of bullshit around it. I’ve been in the industry and the amount of times I’ve seen writers be responsible for 90% of the story and still not get any credit is too sad to count. There’s also a matter of whether Jessie Buckley is even a member of the WGA. She probably isn’t which would make it pretty much impossible for her to get credit. All this to say, who is credited for the screenplay in the credits says absolutely nothing about who made the most contribution to screenplay. Many times it’s completely and utterly inaccurate. I’ve made calls to the WGA before. In my opinion, a writer who is completely responsible for the story structure of a screenplay and the end result film should get a credit, but according to the rep I talked to st the WGA, that is not a criteria. You can literally decide the story’s beginning, middle, and ending and still not get credit sometimes. If it’s an actor who had a lot of input but didn’t do any actual writing/typing or anything, big fat chance she’ll get credit no matter what anyone including Alex Garland wants. So while I get your complaint and it’s a fair one that women didn’t seem to be very involved in a story about women’s experiences, the screenplay credit shouldn’t be a part of it as it’s irrelevant. Your complaint about the lack of women in the crew is fair tho and relevant.

    Loved the video and I’d love to see you talk more about film! Me and my non binary partner discussed this movie with a lot of the same criticisms and overall had a lot of the same issues. I still personally really like this film though all things considering. Even though it doesn’t solve a lot of the problems that misogyny and toxic masculinity do bring to the table, I think it does do a wonderful job of shedding light on that subject in a very real way. I think it’s not the most valuable movie out there to talk about these problems, but showing forms of toxic masculinity like threatening self harm is a very real thing that I don’t think lots of men take into consideration As for the SA scene and being a survivor of SA myself me and my partner talked endlessly about the “necessity” of that scene. For me it is important to talk about even though the scene didn’t handle it well. What makes me the most angry is honestly the motion picture content rating system and how flawed and ignored it is. (for good reason) If the rating system was all around better it could have helped people prepare for that trigger without it losing its shock and emphasis. Men to me has been incredibly interesting to watch and discuss. It’s far from perfect but I do think it does do some stuff right and some stuff horribly wrong. The fact little to no women were involved with this film is icky

    I liked the movie review! I'll echo what some other commenter said, which is that if you make videos about something you're passionate about and have a lot to say about they'll probably wind up being good videos, no need to pigeon hole yourself into one topic.

    Hey, as a man who is not qualified to speak on the behalf of men, or of what the future might be like, here's what I have to say. I'm going to assume that you know I agree with your viewpoint entirely. I'm scared by the world and all it's systemic ways of oppression. I'm afraid of what it does to people, and how people are as they go through it. I'm afraid of men, on the many different levels of fear that you can have. I am very afraid that I will share the bad qualities that many men share. I'm afraid that I feel relatively educated and am still not what I should be, what should be good. I feel that I have a good environment and some very good people around me, and the fact that I'm still not there makes me afraid of how strong this system is. It makes me very angry at myself for not being the man that should populate its percentage of the earth. It's disappointing and worrying that a man much older than me couldn't figure out a more nuanced way to perform misogyny. I'm afraid that he couldn't figure out a realistic thing to say about how to be good, and if that's possible. It makes me scared that I'll stay the same. It makes me afraid that I won't grow to where I should grow, where I want to and can imagine growing. But to the people out there, I do see good people around. More accurately, I see good behaviors. Or at least, I see better behaviors. The world is terrifying and sucks through so many aspects, but there are things that I appreciate. Slow changes in culture, that give a movie directed by a man to be about the dissection of misogyny. And then, for a smart and funny woman to explain exactly why it was done wrong to thousands of people. Or how some level of discussion of mental struggle is mainstream in some parts of the West (I don't know the east well enough like I could). The excruciatingly slow changes, like the rise of attention to mental health, to misogyny, to racism, to environmentalism do give me a little bit of hope. I want to say that as a man, I want, plan, and try to do better and strive to be actually good. It feels like I'm not the only one. I think there are people who are doing better, and I think that there are people who are doing something. I hope we will all survive through to get somewhere better in the future that is unfolding right now, still too slowly, and I only hope you feel like there might still be men who aren't all bad. I can't say if that's true, but sometimes I believe it is. I'll end by adding that none of these systems and contexts justify wrong things and doings by any means, just in case anyone should hear that.

    I actually thought the movie was pretty decent. The big problem I had was, like you said, the plot doesn't really go anywhere. The whole movie I was just like, what the fuck is even happening. I get the point the movie was trying to make, but it didn't pull it off extremely well. I thought the critique on misogyny was well done and I think it's extremely harmful to suggest that men can't talk about misogyny, but the film absolutely should have had more women work on it. The ending was what tied the whole movie together. In the disgusting birth scene where it eventually gives birth to the husband, I think that means every man in the town all represents different awful traits her husband had. They all culminate together into the husband when he's the final birth. I think the whole movie is about her dealing with her perceived guilt she has from her husband's death. I think all the interactions and conversations with the different men in the town all represent the main character's internal pain and confusion. I don't think it's about just having the main character be tormented at all. It's a story about her inner torment with some hit and miss critiques on misogyny. In the very end when she's holding the axe talking to the husband and then cuts to her outside smiling when her friend comes over with blood on her clothes, it suggests she overcomes all her trauma. The movie is about her overcoming her trauma. I thought the ending is what made the rest of the movie justified
