Is TikTok Destroying the Music Industry?

Ойын-сауық

More now than ever, musicians are expressing how exhausted and stressed the industry's expectations have been making them. Since the rise of TikTok and the beginning of the pandemic, artists are expected to be online 24/7. But is this still sustainable now?

Thank you for bringing up the targeted misogyny of “cringe” culture. It reminds me of how a lot of people will downplay female rappers for rapping about the same stuff that men are rapping about. People like to convince themselves that they’re not playing into these double standards, to the point where they don’t even realize they’re actively engaging with and furthering those issues.

One thing I’ll say is, it’s definitely socially okay to make fun of a man’s appearance. A lot of “cringe”, I’d say 75% is young men, trying their best to be attractive. It’s okay to belittle these guys. Also, make suicidality is the highest it’s ever been, and is many standard deviations above women. Men/boys are struggling. Just pay attention, men/boys are bullied online all the time. I don’t see empathy anywhere.

it's not a double standard. Female rap to men is not as entertaining or something men can listen to comfortably.(singing some female rap lyrics is something only comfortable for women to be out reciting out loud) Women constantly blame men for trying to enter men spaces doing what men do and wondering why men don't like it? It's like the NBA WNBA argument. Nobody has to support you just because you want to do something. " Are you not entertained?" the answer is no. WNBA is boring. The exciting parts of basketball don't exist there. How interesting would it be to watch infant boxers? Women don't even support their own as much as they rant n rave about. WNBA as another example. The games cant fill high school bleachers. It's annoying to listen to this nonsense entitlement instead of just doing r&d. Everyone isn't an artist. You don't just wake up n tada I'm whatever i wanna be, an people are gonna love n support me! Thats not life. Not for men, and sure as hell not gonna just be gifted to women. I shoot music festivals, energy doesn't lie, I've stood in front of a lot of artists and watched their energy. A lot of female rappers look like their up their pretending to be something, like playing a role. I've seen India Arie, Rapsody, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, H.E.R. their performances, man goodness grief the energy you feel from their performances, then you've got other artists that arent worth naming that perform like someone just brought to life a porn set. We live during a time where society is trying to tell men not to over-sexualize women, yet women over-sexualize themselves and think they are appealing to men, they are aiming towards the wrong men bc women refuse to acknowledge you cant pool all men together and boom patriarchy. If you want success in entertainment industries, the goal has to be, actually being entertaining to others outside of yourself. And if you can't handle the opinions of others that you can't control, you need to find something else to do with your life.

I like how you thought about the “no use” part. I was born in 2000 and got my first hand-me-down flip phone from my step father around 2014. Didn’t get a phone that could use KZread or social media until 2017 and although we had a desktop computer since 2010, I wasn’t allowed to use it until it became nigh impossible to do my schoolwork without it. The inability to relate to shit my peers were talking about and thinking about from late elementary until practically my senior year in high school was jarring. I guess it’s funny that now, with my own phone plan and all the internet I could ask for, I really only use Snapchat for friends and KZread for content. I firmly believe that no access to the growing adolescent relationship with the online world stunted my interactions with peers, however, despite the harsh learning curve that is almost certainly worse now, I feel like might have been for the best. I feel pretty good.

My girlfriend and I always talk about what’s best for kids. We flip flop from thinking no social media is good overall, then go back to how important social cohesion is. It’s a tricky balance. I feel like if you are a good enough parent, with very open communication, you can work with your child, to find what’s best for them. I know that I would’ve benefitted from no social media, but then again without the internet, I wouldn’t be who I am today. Very interesting things to think about. One thing I’ve noticed, maybe it’s juvenoia, but I feel the youth today are more of a monolith, and less individual. Individuality is tokenized.

I got a lot a criticism on social media other platforms like yikyak and it killed me. It sucked. It’s so easy to get into your own head and doubt yourself and now I’m down and slacking. However people still do love my content and I feel bad for the tens of thousands of followers but idk. It’s hard to please everyone and I need to know that.

(TMI coming) Not as a music creator, but as someone who posted illustrations online on and off for years till the pandemic hit, I can relate a little. I would usually pump out a lot of work for fun when I was in a zone, and not posting online, but once it was out there suddenly my focus went from "I'm drawing for fun!" to agonizing over what people "wanted to see" and if something was "good enough to post"/would get "enough likes". I hated it - it would make me stop drawing (Analysis Paralysis?). Even now, I barely draw anymore privately because when I try to put pen to paper the same thought patterns emerge. I dont use much social media anymore (outside of scrolling once every few days on twitter and watching youtube) and while I absolutely 100% understand and appreciate the positives of such instant and available connection, it's only ever been a source of anxiety for me and I feel somehow exposed. I wish I was the type of person who had the courage to put themselves out there, but I like being anonymous to the degree I'm able now. Anyway...this video was insightful, and I think well worth the time and effort you put into it. You're also fun to listen to, as always :)!! I hope it's possible to strike a healthy balance between online and offline, but I know its difficult when your career can depend on an algorithm and engagement...and then also your self worth at times. Yeesh.

This is why I make music but never post it. I record on a tape recorder and have a collection of songs in a box in my room, and I love keeping it just that way. It's fulfilling to make it for myself and there's no pressure to have other people listen to it.

I am painfully happy that I still haven't gotten tik tok (and that I'm not in a place where I want to post my music, or make any short films) because of this. I did however get extreme burnout with my makeup account. I now just post when I like my makeup. My story is how I connect with people because I'm in online school, so I do still overshare on there.

glitchgummusic makes a very good point. It's a profession in itself. One you're obliged to pursue if you want to make it as a musician today (or artist in general) because that's where the bar's been set by big corporations that have enough money to hire someone to do that part of the job. Artists and their fans could in theory set up a platform which promotes artists rather evenly and which doesn't require so much else from every artist (like knowing how to play the social media game), but it will always be drowned out by artists who are signed to labels who do succesfully garner attention using social media. The presence of artists who do it better makes it impossible for smaller artists to take a step back, and usually that's a good thing *when it's actually about music,* but now artists are basically wasting their time on maintaining their profile and manipulating the algorithm while society and they themselves would be better off if they could just focus on making music.

Great video! I think those burnt out artists could get non-music jobs if they feel like their careers are too demanding. See how that works out. And I'm not trying to be edgy or an asshole or a boomer - I think it's legit good advice for someone to strengthen their mental health. Work at a job-job for a while, preferrably one that requires you to work with and communicate with many people beyond your bubble. Clock in, clock out, relax. Get that steady paycheck. A standard job can be really gratifying, plus all that you experience at that job will be inspiration for your art.

I’m not a content creator, but i experienced something similar to digital burnout after i had a hard time coping with dropping out of college just before the pandemic. I ended up in a spiral of mindlessly scrolling for hours upon hours for days upon days & felt my life wasting away before my own eyes. it has been 3 years since that began, and as of last september, i began a serious effort to regain control of my life which involved SEVERELY limiting my screen time (it was necessary for me). I’m not trying to share any ~deep thoughts~ about social media as i’ve stepped away from nearly every form of it, but i DO want to share some changes i’ve made that have directly impacted my mental health (specifically from the lens of a former screen-addict) in case anyone else is struggling in a similar way - i do not use my phone as an alarm, i have an alarm clock & i dont touch my phone for the first hour of my day no matter how badly i want to - i read or journal instead. - journaling (as cliche as it sounds) has helped me channel my negative feelings and that hamster wheel of negative self talk that our brains run on these days into words and onto paper. there is not a right way to journal, but getting it out and down somewhere makes it tangible and real and can help you feel validated in your feelings. - i do yoga (with adrienne lol) regularly now which was hard asf as a former gym class hater, but it really can help to get your mind and body connected to each other again. its soooo easy for your mind to go to some awful places & grounding yourself in your body is a great way to manage that. - getting enough sleep (i feel like im saying obvious stuff but like. ITS TRUE… FR..) i used to go to bed at 3-4am and wake up at 9-10. it affected my overall quality of life so much and i will never take it for granted again. - setting my phone to greyscale so i dont like being on it as much. this helps keep me from mindlessly scrolling as im learning to use my phone as the tool for communication it is instead of the lifeline it had become. anyways. reading this back sounds a little dumb because it all seems like obvious stuff, but i hope that if someone else is struggling with similar stuff that they might read this and realize that its not impossible to come back from these places.

Your video was really insightful !! Loved it ! To me a content creator's whole job is to please people or do things for the public to CONSUME. So it centers on the consumer, not the artist. That is the way the industry works. That is the job. Art is not to be consumed, it is something we mostly do for ourselves. So using content creation as a outlet for art is a sure fire way to see your art treated as a way to get likes instead of a product of your self expression.... We have to be real, accept the truth at some point about artistic industries and make choices. Especially when you know how addictive it is ! For example, fashion, in the way it functions, is all about creating the future now while being IN the moment and forward which is super stressful. If you find this toxic, maybe do not take fashion. And I speak from exeperience.... hard truth : sometimes we dream of things that are too toxic for us and we must choose. AND THAT'S OKAY ! Too many of us hold to unrealistic expectations because we saw a coup'e of people succeed on social media... Also maaaany of our super famous faves still diversify their income sources. As a fellow artist I wish everyone strength and to find themselves back in their art as it is 10000% more valuable than likes and visibility. Much love

Before the pandemic, I was always so busy and surrounded by people (rented a house with my 4 best friends!) So my mood was so easy to regulate. I had plenty of outlets and many more things that kept my mind engaged and going. But since lockdowns, my mental health has declined dramatically. I'm not diagnosed yet but I'm pretty sure I've developed generalized anxiety and a phobia or 2. Now, I definitely use social media and my parasocial relationships with kpop groups and KZreadrs to regulate my mood and distract myself from my anxiety. So yeah, it doesn't surprise me that researchers are finding a correlation between poor mental health and social media. It likely goes both ways honestly.

This! Ladies and Gentlemen! This is one of the greatest KZread videos I've ever watched. It's just telling me that I'm not loosing my mind. I'm right! I'm writing a book about this. It's made us become mass producers instead of craftsmen. Social media uses to be a tool to help you XYZ. Now we've become the tool of social media. We gave the robots all the responsibility. Now, fate is without irony because we can't live without them. It's the same thing that's happened with the finance industry. It's a runaway swirling vortex of energy.

I also have to come back and state that as a creative and musicians, we're giving the power to this thing called TikTok. It only has the power that it does because we have decided that it was important. I feel for these content creators featured in the video, however, I would also have to say just take the bullets out of the loaded TikTok gun. You don't have to create for the sake of TikTok and content. We are artists, and as artists we are the ones who are creative. We understand how all of this works, and we should be the ones having a say so in how this gets released. If you're a major label artist stuck in a contract, then there isn't much I can say. But for those how are independent, the only pressure to create "viral" content is on ourselves. We're trying to keep up with a machine that is designed for reward those who feed it. We aren't machines. We are human beings. I remember in the early 2000s when music was first hitting the digital landscapes. The music industry didn't quite know how to handle the transition, and for a moment consumers/artists were killing it. WE were decided how music was heard, consumed, and distributed. We didn't have to wait on record labels to OK a release, we could just use MySpace, forums, and other sharing websites like LimeWire (computer AIDS FTW lol). There was no one size fits all way of doing things. It wasn't until the big wigs as the labels finally got a hint of what's happening that they started forcing art. We have to start doing that again, taking back what's ours and letting consumers and big wigs know that they can't control us.

@@miraclelamb8073 Just getting to this content. I would say, find out who your target audience is and hone in on them. Develop honest connections with people around you, share your music with them, and then continue to develop your sound. Everyone stresses the importance of going viral these days when what really matters is the music. As long as your music is good, you'll grab the attention of who you need to. It might take some money on your end (every business venture does) however it will always be money worth spent. Whatever you do, don't be like the creators in this TikTok compilation forcing yourself to TikTok for the sake of clout.

I would say yes and no. I'll start with no. No: Just like KZread, I believe when used correctly, TikTok can be a great tool for artists to express themselves. It's a great way for exposure and it can help bridge the gap between potential fan and artist. That's, of course, if TikTok fits the branding. Not every artist should use TikTok because not every artist makes TikTok type of music and content. Yes: Piggybacking off the previous statement, BECAUSE certain artists found ways to use TikTok to get massive amounts of success, the music industry thinks this is how ALL artist are to be successful now. The same thing happened with ringtones when they first came out. Certain artists made great ringtone type of music, and then next thing you know, labels are forcing artists to create ringtone music if they weren't part of that elite few who already had an established fan base. So many great artists either One hit wonders that could have the potential star power to be great all get washed down the drain to for the sake of a viral moment on TikTok

giving up real jobs for social media is scary probably most never make any steady incomes every single month unless they are already super big and famous or already born rich..if they are already rich or famous tik tok is not for them they dont need it or anything cause ppl will still make it easy for them to get paid no matter what and they can make non stop content cause they paid for it and the help or whatever. ..simple...

I can definitely say that it isn't just rich kid problems. There are many people who have built their career, usually art, on their online presence. Small businesses, that are definitely not 'rich kids', such as some people I know who sell prints of their artwork and more online, are also forced to consistently create posts or instagram reels and please the social media algorithm so that they can keep their audience. Independent comic artists, (that are definitely NOT rich, trust me), spend wayyy more time working on their episodes than someone with a 9-5 job, and you can see that pure skill and hard work is not enough to gain an audience online. The ones who use viral tiktok audios and memes to push their comic get the attention. for some, staying 'on trend' is vital to make money. it's essentially advertisement for their stores or product. the fact that art as a career can be accomplished online is a double edged sword. what's the solution? i don't know. like she said, it's too early to see the long term effects of this new social media culture. (you could argue that, well, that's the just risk you have to take if you want to start an online career, deal with it. but that doesn't mean these issues shouldn't be talked about.)
