I find it extremely weird that people are commenting so negatively about this video. This is why SHE doesn’t use dip powder. I don’t use dip for most of the same reasons. Some things are better for different people, and that’s okay. I really appreciated hearing things I didn’t know about some dip powders, and I appreciate all informative content subjective or not. It seems like some people have more of a problem with this video than the misrepresentation of dip powder.

I know so many people who pay for dip at the salon. It blows my mind. I have nothing against people who use it personally but I would never pay to have it applied to my nails. I use gel and polygel sometimes. I do my nails myself and if I want something extra I will pay a nail tech to help me. I just can't pay for it. I think its gross and I don't trust salons to not reuse the powder. Yuck in my opinion.

Exactly. I use bioglitter instead of plastic or mica, I recycle gems when I can, and check out more "sustainable" products when they are released, but honestly I just own that the hobby I chose involves plastic waste. @@thearmchairjournalist566 Yes... but there are many kinds of "plastic". Plastic is a catch all chemistry term that includes a LOT of substances. Some break down or dissolve more readily, some are more irritating to skin, some smell much stronger than others etc. In context here, the waste from my gel nails is around a quarter to half teaspoon of powder that goes in the bin, and my hands are perfectly fine after removal. The waste from acrylic or dip nails is a CUP of waste, mostly sludge that I CAN'T put in the bin because it will eat through the plastic of the bin itself and make it flammable in hot weather. It also makes my hands and head hurt for DAYS after removal.

They stay on pretty well, and even look pretty decent. You are a treasure!

I think it really took off in 2020 with all the closures so people could keep their nails done somewhat decently. I’m a good ole fashioned natural nails and regular old nail polish which I can do myself easily. If I really love a stamped design I’ve done, say for Christmas~~I will, very rarely, put a coat of base & topcoat gel to have it last 2 weeks or more. Yes, y’all can put gel base and topcoat over regular polish~~I’ll do it the day after I do my mani. It can be easily softly filed off without touching the natural nail because you have the regular polish under it-just don’t file past the color or stamped design you’ve used. Thank you for giving great info to everyone

First, love the hair...so sophisticated! As for the video, very informative, as usual, and I for one really appreciate honest information and advice that is based on facts and experience, whether I agree with it or not. That being said, I used dip powder exactly one time and decided never again! I wear contacts and my reaction was exactly like Liz described. I also had the same thought about it...I don't want to use any product on myself or anyone else that my body can have such a reaction to. Aside from that, I also went from nail enthusiast to licensed nail tech and I owe a great deal of that to Liz. When I first started out I seriously f-ed up my own nails because I was inexperienced and misinformed. Then I discovered Liz's channel and binge watched while following her instructions and practicing on my husband and daughters (my nails were just too damaged). I developed a real passion and went to school and the rest is history. And neither I nor any of my clients have damaged nails now.. So thank you Liz for sharing your experience with us and for always keeping it real and hope to see more of your videos on a regular basis again (especially the rants because I love it!)! And could you do one on which brands work well with other brands and which don't? Like does this hard gel from brand A work well with that color gel or polish from brand B? Thanks

I agree with you entirely. Have been a nail tec for 30 odd years now. I have done all you said, silk wraps, linen wraps, fibre glass etc. The fibre glass I think, used to turn out so delicate and, like you say, could. be back filled with ease and weren’t heavy on the natural nail. I’ve seen some of these dip powder nails and have not been impressed at all. I am retired now but still do my own nails and I only wish gel polishes had been around in my day. I use them constantly on my own nails and am always amazed how little time I spend on either back filling them or putting on a complete new set. Wonderful stuff ….

It is so exciting to see you back. Love the hairstyle! I agree with you 100% on the dip powder. No - I'm not a licensed nail tech. But I have a brain and am pretty capable of applying common sense. I'm not a fan of acrylics either. Both are JUST my opinion - but I have seen a lot of pretty serious nail damage done with the dip powders, not to mention the allergies because they "dip" their finger into the dip. It's not just applying it onto the nail - they literally put their finger in there! All that skin contact!!! Anyway - great to have you back. Ignore all of the haters - those of us that LOVE you far outnumber the Negative Nellies!

Love the hair! You have been missed ! While I don’t disagree with some of your reasons ( ie. yes, the resin is basically glue, the smell is off-putting, no nail enhancement should be marketed as ‘healthy’), you did not address how many in the dip community use gel or gel tips to build extensions and then use dip over top. Many also use peel base for quick removal or avoid the base/activator altogether, opting to file down to the gel overlay of a gel/dip combo. I’m a gel fan, mainly as a result of your tutorials and educational tips, but found dip added another alternative for nail art. LE and other higher end gel polishes are not accessible to non-nail techs and they can be expensive. I believe dip really took off amidst the 2020 chaos and can attest to jumping on the dip train, but found a way to integrate it into my repertoire. Your videos are always informative and well thought out, but I felt this one (with all the advisories, duly-noted) lacked some context on how this system can be used safely. After all, nail enhancements in any shape or form (pun intended😆) are all chemical. There is nothing ‘natural’ about any of this, vegan 9-free or otherwise !

I love your perspective on this topic! I use it the way you have described and absolutely loveeeee it! And using builder gel under a nail enhancement is no different than using gels over acrylic. 🤗 (I’ve seen some people elsewhere saying these systems can’t be used together) I agree that some education on using this system safely (prep and removal) could avoid many of the issues discussed in this video, thus making dip a more desirable product to use.

Preach, Liz. I used to do acrylics and poly gel and everyone was filing off all the product before a fill, so I did too. Boy, were my nails weak a brittle. Do a protective layer of gel/acrylics, depending on the system you use, and don’t file it off unless there’s lifting. Long story cut short, gel overlays have allowed me to have some length on my nails, I redo my colour every 10-14 days, always leaving a thin layer of base coat. Result: less time, less product, no harmed nails!

I get why you may not like it but my nails are the healthiest and longest they've ever been due to dip. I've been doing it for over a year now. I don't mind the acetone soakoff. I've had no issues soaking off the product, it just takes patience, and my nails are stronger than ever. It's like when people blame acrylic for eating through their nails but really it's because they aren't removing the product properly. I redo it every two weeks and my nails only get longer and stronger. I think this is because of the protection that dip due to its hardness. Some may not like it but I'm about the results. But to each their own, I respect your opinions.

I switched to builder gel as my natural nail overlay because it’s faster for me than clear dip powder. I like to do a few layers of clear dip powder and then use a peel off base coat so that I can put whatever I want on top. Sometimes gel polish, sometimes regular polish, sometimes colored dip powder. But I respect that it's not for everyone!

This is the best video I've seen. Honest & clear. I was researching on trying a nail system to try. I prefer acrylics since it's the only type that hasn't lifted from my nails from lifting weights, but I think it's most likely due to prep from nail techs & the gels may have changed since the last time I tried gels. This time around, I want to try doing my nails myself. The first dip video I watched with "vitamins infused for your nails" I was like, wtf. I have medical background so when you explained what nail plate was, I had to giggle. Great video! Your content is invaluable.

I was playing with hard gel extensions at home after I had a bad experience at a salon after the reopening. I have really short nail beds and so I prefer something that I can extend with. My sister doesn’t like extensions and she has a puppy too, so she wants something that is quick and lets her type at her job. She has not had any complaints about it so far, but she also has always had way stronger nails than me. Long story short I bought her several colors with dip. I will definitely be asking for an update once I get to talking to her about nails, and that is pretty often. I have to admit I see why this video started to upset some people because they do not want to be told something is bad for them. I also have to admit that I know you are really smart, a really good teacher, and really fun to listen to. I spent some time on your shop and there are so many products that I want to buy and try. Right now I am taking a break from nails but I am anxious to dive (not “dip”) back in once the time is right. In the mean time I will be watching more of your videos. Liz, there was a huge improvement in my gel extensions once I started watching your videos, so thank you for that. I want to show my appreciation by wholeheartedly patronizing your shop. But I have to admit I fall into the category of “went hard and then went home” when it comes to nail products.

Hi Hazel, you are not alone on the went hard and then went home issue. Most people start out like that until they learn all the attributes of how to use nail products without ruining their natural nails beyond the point of no return. My goal in everything is to share my own thoughts about what works best for me, but also to encourage people to find their own path in their passion for nails. There are so many products and options out there and it's always evolving. I am so excited to hear that some of my videos helped you improve and I am sure with time and practice you will get better and better. :) If dip is a quick easy thing for you that is totally fine to use, I just want people to know what it is and also explain why I personally don't teach with it or support it.

My clients go 4-5 weeks with dip powder and no problem. Fumes are way less than acrylic and taking off is easy and quick in a baggy/acetone with a paper towel inside and put in warm water. While I don't like the smell of acetone a towel over the hands as they are soaking in the bag eliminates the problem. Nails are no worse than any other product. I've tried to get them to use acrylic simply because on a natural nail overlay it is easier and quicker to build up a even layer but they still prefer the dip powder. It doesn't have to be completely removed either. I don't know how you get that it only lasts 1-2 weeks. It depends how many layers you do, if you build them up the same as acrylic they are strong. All my clients that have dip powder have their own nails with overlays and their nails are pretty resilient to removal and reapplication. The only real issue I have with dip powder is that some have more pigment than acrylic and are not strong and develop hairline cracks in them. It's trial and error. People also say you can use dip powder with Monomer and while some work mainly they don't work because there is not enough acrylic in them and they don't dry hard and can be rubbery. But I find all acrylic powder can be used with the dip system. At the end of the day all products you put on your nail is going to cause some damage full stop. I do like acrylic but the smell is horrible and feels so toxic breathing it in, the smell permeates after for a long time whereas once the glue dries in less than a minute there is absolutely no smell. Don't work with your face directly over the nail and you don't get any fumes at all.

Thank you so much for this video and breaking down what exactly dip powder is and challenging the myths associated with it. I used to get dip powder done by a nail tech and though my nails were growing long (I naturally have pretty strong nails for the most part), I didn’t like how my nails were after each takedown of the product. I thought it may be due to the nail tech using a sanding bit to file down my nail every 4 weeks I would go in but I do also remember how treacherous the removal process was when quarantine hit and I had to remove with acetone. It was that sticky mess you talked about that was so frustrating and so damaging to remove. Now I’ve been using gel as a DIYer (huge thanks to your channel!) and the difference is night and day! Gel in my opinion is so much more fun to work with, looks better and removes easier than dip powder. Plus, I notice that if I get a break somewhere in the middle, it only affects the gel itself and not my natural nail whereas with dip, I got a break that did affect my natural nail and it was not fun at all. Especially when I was told that dip was more durable than gel but after hearing from you, I think it was the lack of flexibility of dip that allowed it to just snap with no remorse 😩. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge in this industry! 🤗

I destroyed my nails with gel. I would soak for an hour and then end up e-filing. I can soak my dip nails with the warm water trick and it’s completely off in 10 minutes, no mess or anything. My nails are way longer and healthier with dip too. I guess it’s just different for everyone.

As for the 'vitamins', a big nail Co. is now touting their new builder gel as 'healthy w/ vitamins'. Yeah, ok. Dip powder nails is the ONLY way I do my nails. Not because it’s easy but they last much longer than gel nails and instead of using glue layers you can use clear base coat gel which will give you the same results and long lasting nails. I get more peeling and chipping with gel nails than dip powder nails. In my opinion Dip Powder is much healthier than any other nail products. And if you want strong nails that won’t break then you can use nail tips but I personally enjoy shorter nails.

I use gel base and pour the powder over the wet gel. It works perfectly for me this way. My current mani is going on 4 weeks (not on purpose, I just don’t have time). No lifting, no breaks, no cracking. I also love gel polish. but the dip with gel base lasts longer than gel polish for me. I also don’t believe that any nail product is good for my nails.
