When you think about it Obi-Wan Kenobi's life was filled with tragedy: losing his master, the woman he loved, his bestfriend, and the Jedi Order. Yet with all that he still never turned to the dark side. His devotion to the light side of the force saw him become one of the most powerful and wise jedi to ever live.

Qui-Gon didn’t know just how true or why it would be when he said this, but he was absolutely right when he said, “I foresee that you will become a great Jedi Knight,” when talking to Obi-Wan. Obi-wan is hands down my favorite Star Wars character. Period.

Actually, Obi-wan wasn't even supposed to be a Jedi. He aged out of the order and was going to become a farmer. Fate pushed he and Qui-Gon together, but even before, when Qui-Gon had repeatedly refused to train him, he never showed signs of falling to the dark side.

I like that concept. The concept of the "good guys" always thinking they're the good guys, no matter what anyone says or how anyone thinks. This concept applies to real life as about 90% of the world population uses that concept every single day. The thing about bringing "balance" in the SW universe is just that, balance. Both sith and jedi or neither.

I also think people fool themselves with the idea of “grey” too. Like, the Sith are absolutely diabolical and the dark side is destructive in nature. Everyone knows that. But the reason it becomes prevalent is because the Jedi often wind up becoming the source of their own troubles, either through dogmatic practices, corrupting within the ranks, or simply ignorance and misuse of their status to benefit themselves. The best Jedi are the ones in the field, not the council or the political ones, but the ones out there doing what’s right. Standing up for the people. That sort of thing. So yeah, the Sith and dark side are objectively evil and that much is true. But the Jedi order itself is flawed. But that doesn’t mean you need both to exist and that “balance” is a key. It’s just how things are. Things will balance out eventually, since someones always gonna have a problem with tyranny and rampant destruction against the Sith. While the Jedi order are prone to creating their own problems, so they’re balanced out over time as their ego inflates.

It’s not a surprise to me that the gray Jedi of Luke’s time didn’t like the perfect Jedi™️ of the old Order who deliberately disregarded his still flawed, but more idealistic and open-minded master Qui Gonn’s teachings. He almost consistently threw his personal agency, beliefs, interests, moral integrity, and friendships with Luke, Ahsoka, Padme, and Anakin under the bus to kiss Yoda’s ass and get ahead on the Council. I mean, it was to the point that, even in death, he could not admit that he was wrong to deceive Luke to try to fulfill Yoda’s request of him to use him as weapon to kill off the monster of a man he and Yoda inadvertently helped turn his father into in the afterlife. I’m not saying Obi-Wan was evil and a conquerer like all of the gray Jedi are saying. That’s exaggerated Empire propaganda they grew up under, but there is a grain of truth to it too. He wasn’t generally ill-intended, but he was never a particularly good person either. Obi-Wan was a good Jedi by the standards of *his time* because he generally sold his soul to Yoda and the Council. He consciously made an effort to shut down and not learn from people who had or once had more idealistic, open-minded, and spontaneously selfless traits because they didn’t gain Yoda’s and the Council’s favor. Even Anakin has more moments of that sort of idealistic, spontaneous, and selfless true heroism in the narrative at his best, and he also became one of the franchise’s most horrifying and prominent villains. It just goes to show that being a teacher’s pet in class does not automatically equal being a successful person. Yeah, individualism in excess leads to toxic selfishness, but you also do need a level of individual curiosity and motivation of the world outside of your comfort zone to truly make a difference for the better around you. If your only goal is to fit in with the crowd and just play it safe, you can’t make a meaningful impact for the better of anyone else or achieve true selflessness either because the only thing that motivates you is external validation when have no personal values or self-motivation to be good and do better. That’s Obi-Wan’s tragedy.

Y'know, for an Order that has "there is no ignorance, there is knowledge" as one of the lines of their Code, they have a bad habit of "lock it up and toss the key" when it comes to anything that challenges them. Reason #124 why post-Ruusan Jedi practically did Palpatine's work for him.

2:17 A little oversight in this topic, to say that the point of Jedi coveting darkside knowledge is false is in grey territory. The Jedi stored many Sith artifacts, scripts, and Holocrons within a hidden vault within their own temple; some of these dark artifacts even having the ability to corrupt those that came in contact with them. The word coveted is used, which would be false, but even so they had one of, if not, the biggest vault of old Sith and dark Jedi artifacts stored within their own temple on Coruscant. And also after the fall of the Jedi order, Sidious is said to have taken many of these artifacts from this very vault to add to his own collection.

When your philosophy denies core aspects of humanity, then the undeniable truth of those core aspects will lead up to to their logical opposite. Without passion, love, hate or vengeance, many find that they also feel no *purpose*. To experience emotion is to feel alive, whereas to deny emotion and exist in clarity is essentially to live like a dead thing or a rock. The truth is to see that these core aspects of humanity can taint our vision and cloud our judgement. At times they can become vices and eat away at our characters until they twist and distort. Yet they are an undeniable part of us all. It is the unique manifestations of emotions that guide our development as individuals, and the more we can embrace and realize that in ourselves an others, the more simply it is to live in harmony. The Jedi way is, in a sense, a lazy path. Rather than incorporate emotion into their guiding philosophy, they instead choose to deny and suppress it. Suppression grows emotion and never stifles it--those who achieve enlightenment can eventually release their emotions and ego to the breeze, but the emotions can *always* come back. The Jedi DID create the Sith because both philosophies are incomplete.

This is why grey Jedi hated Obi-wan. He walked the walk. He didn't reject his humanity like other Jedi, he accepted his emotions, but he mastered them. They did not master him. Grey Jedi, and people who like them, recognize that they are too weak to be actual Jedi, like Obi-wan. The problem with the Jedi order is not simply their philosophy, it was trying to force it upon all Jedi. This is why they raised Padawans from childhood (Also why Anakin had to kill the younglings). Obi-wan, and likely Yoda as well, was an outlier. Luke was not a grey Jedi. He was a Jedi like Obi-wan, he recognized that he had emotions, but rather than being consumed by them, he mastered them.

Part of me thinks they’re more corruptible, you just need to find what makes them tick as an individual, rather than letting the standard Jedi be blindly arrogant of their own weaknesses In short, while the Grey’s are more neutral, it means they’re closer to tipping over to the dark than the regular Jedi ever were. After all, while the Jedi lack awareness of their own flaws, an inexperienced grey may find themselves much more willing to embrace dark practices for their own gain. Yoda has alot of problems. Age is no guarantee of mastery, nor skill, nor really even wisdom. Yoda is a slave to dogma, and routine, and he even admitted that the fall of the jedi was pretty much his personal fault. He trained and led the order for 800 years, and didnt let it change or evolve. He was a force for stagnation, which is the weakness and pitfall of the jedi. Yoda also espouses a reverence and respect for the force, but that is belied by his every use of it as a utility tool. And not even a sharp or subtle tool either. Hes the bluntest of the blunt in every application of the force he is shown using. He is a terrible lightsaberist. He hates lightsaber combat, hates any fighting. As such, his mastery of it is wrote. He learned all about the forms so he could teach them, but only uses ataru because it makes up for his shortcomings (short) and its in line with his reliance on the force and wielding it like a blunt instrument. Ataru is all attack, little defensive focus. Instead of yielding to and following the will of the force, yoda stubbornly held onto the order of his youth. Contrast that with kenobi, who actively pursued and attained absolute mastery over his chosen form, chosen by the way not to make up for any short comings but because it was more in line with his own philosophy and connection to the force. Kenobi was willing to defy the order to follow the will of the force several times, most notably the training of anakin. Kenobi used the force in a truly reverent way in all his applications of it. He was described as a clear window onto the sunlit meadow of the force.

The story you are speaking of takes place during the clone wars and Tyris himself fell to the dark side. After he was killed the order, which was more like a heretic order, continued to train and grow. Most of them though would be executed by the empire and specifically it was Vader who sensed only the light side in one of them. Jolee Bindo can be considered someone who was between the dark and the light side . That's because though he left the order he continued to live somehow based on the Jedi way. But in difference with the Jedi, he used and controlled his emotions in order not to fall in the dark side. In conclusion the gray Jedi do not exist in the way that everyone believe they do. Most of these gray orders have failed, though many individuals have managed to live in this balance. But also don't be confused that balance means 50%light and 50% dark. The best example are the Jedi, who themselves acknowledge the existence of the dark side and the way to achieve this balance is through controlling the dark side.

Its hard to think of Kenobi as an idealist, much less an ideologue or paragon. Think about his deception of Luke regarding his father, and his weasel words trying to justify it. The admirable things about Kenobi had to do with not compromising with temptations or trials and enduring the demands of what he held himself responsible for, no matter what the order was or wasn't doing to the universe. He didn't jettison his morals because of or despite what others did or didn't do or teach. He was an obedient soldier who negotiated as a habit and didn't seek division or dissent. I don't recall Kenobi making any holocrons and if he had a flaw, it was withholding information. I think most viewers of the whole arc know on some level Kenobi made mistakes along the way. Yet he always tried to be.his best self and not abandon what he thought of as good and just. I can't think of him as responsible for the Jedi ills or failings. He just wasn't making policy or curriculum for future generations. He was one master on the council and one general in the war, among others more powerful and controlling than he, in which he trusted.

The Jensaarai were written as an attempt to have an alternate Force storyline rather than be stuck with either side of the spectrum. It was done poorly and like other attempts at making "grey" Jedi it ignored the fact that you can't use both sides equally or you will fall down the Dark side rabbit hole very quickly. Even Windu barely touching the Dark side was a very risky thing. In all cases it always ends up with the "greys" being using Light side powers and Light side ideals but saying they're bringing "balance". in this case the writer came up with the idea the Jedi created the Sith even though this subject had already been touched on and they were hoping to make a name for themselves. That's one of the issues with the EU. The writers kept trying to outdo each other so they could be the next Timothy Zahn with the same recognition. Unfortunately things really started to get out of hand. People remember the good book out of the EU but keep forgetting that the number or craptastic book really outnumbered those.

@Lawrence Thakurdeen It was a joke based on mainstream Christianity only. Not those that truly care. Christianity has become a product to be sold, shallow, cheap. Real christians are legit good folks. Raised baptist, went atheist, then Torah observant Christian, now just a fuckup christian. I know the faith well. My comment was in bad taste but it is truthful in ways.

Ummmm...with relation to the Jensaarai, there was a completely different reason they hated Obi-Wan. Since nearly everything in Legends about the Jensaarai comes from I, Jedi which is one of my favorite Star Wars novels (and Corran Horn one of my favorite EU characters), I can say there was a far more direct reason. In I, Jedi, the leaders of the Jensaarai bought Sith teachings from an archeologist who scavenged them from temples on Yavin 4. They learned from these teachings and succumbed to the Dark Side. Near the end of the Clone Wars (the book actually says after the the Clone Wars, but the movie portrayals makes that impossible since they ended with Order 66), a small Jedi strike team composed of Ylenic It'kla (from whose POV Corran learns about the encounter through his nephew, Elegos), Corran's grandfather Neeja Halcyon, and a Jedi Ylenic only identified by his scent as "Desertwind", confront the now Dark Side acolytes and attempt to convince them to re-join the Light. A fight ensues, and each Jedi squares off with a Jensaarai master. The Jedi are ultimately victorious, with only Nejaa dying to Nikkos Tyris, but the strike crippled the remaining Jensaarai who hid from the Jedi. While Desertwind is not explicitly named as Obi-Wan, Desertwind's lightsaber skill and rank in the Jedi Order implies he was a very powerful Jedi, and he personally helped slay the then masters of the Jensaarai order...in a way, making him their "Darth Vader". Also, early on in Legends canon, Obi-Wan's home world was thought to be Tatooine, more directly lending him this scent. This was later changed of course, but at the time this was so.

Not exactly a false statement because at one point in time the Jedi did study both the dark and light and believed in balance in the force but that was the original jedi order.

The Sith code is not any more evil than the Jedi code. It’s the interpretation of the text that varies so greatly.

it seems that this organization were falling to the dark side bit by bit because eventually some grey jedi's will fall to the dark side due to there teachings. I think they were at least first a grey jedi perhaps but they rapidly were consumed by the dark side. I know they didn't join the sith but they really wanted them to win. A grey jedi must be someone studying both the light and the dark side but not to be consumed by neither of them just simply balance and never mixing the two.

As far as I'm concerned what makes a grey Jedi is a force user who is not allied with either. There are many beings in the Galaxy in cannon and in legends especially, who are strong force wielders but have nothing to do with the jedi vs sith or empire vs republic
