I think the real trick was him saying "It's over, Anakin! I have the high ground." Obi-Wan knew him very well and was aware of his arrogance. He knew that he could be goaded into a disadvantageous position because Anakin/Vader would take the bait without caring about the odds.

So I’ve never seen anyone mention this but I always thought the “ high ground “ reference was a kinda play on how Obi Wan defeats Darth Maul. I always felt like it was something of a highlight moment in Anakin”s perception of Obi Wan and how a little brother might try to use a moment of triumph of their older brother as a stepping stone to show how they have surpassed them. It seemed to me that Anakin was going to beat Obi Wan in a similar fashion to how Obi Wan defeated the one who defeated his master Qui Gon Jinn . Just a thought

Midichlorian counts only point to POTENTIAL. So Anakin was POTENTIALLY far stronger than Obi Wan. But during that battle they were evenly matched. Because it's not like Anakin had spent hours working on his force abilities. He was a SWORDSMAN and BOTH of them had been shaped, and sharpened by constant fighting during the Clone Wars side by side. Also, Obi Wan had a master who always told him to stay in the moment, to be mindful of the living force so he was perfectly in tune with it during the fight. But Anakin foolishly and arrogantly saw Obi Wan and the Jedi as "weak" and Kenobi's style as purely defensive, which it was - BUT - Anakin's rage and his desire to kill his former master blinded him to the fact that Obi Wan himself had literally come to Mustafar with one goal in mind, to END ANAKIN'S LIFE. Obi Wan doesn't get enough credit. I can't think of any Jedi of his era who can say that he'd defeated two Sith Lords, then beat one and killed the other in the rematches. He also took out Grievous who was a Jedi-killing beast of a cyborg whose tech allowed him to move faster than the eye could see and faster than any Jedi according to the ROTS novel. Obi Wan was NOT a dude than any SMART Dark Sider should take lightly in any way.

Obi Wan also almost turned to the Dark Side had he fully embraced his rage at Anakin at betraying the Order. Midbattle Obi Wan changes his battle strategy, lets the Force flow through him, and ultimately teaches the arrogant never listens to his Master student a much needed lesson in a total Self Preservation moment. Obi Wan basically PLEADS with Anakin NOT to make him a multiple amputee. The drunk with new power Vader ignores it, and gets SCHOOLED af while Obi Wan retaining his humility mourns that he had to DO WHAT HE SAID, and what he MUST at the decision of Vader-kin. Epic, poetic, and it was Obi Wan who passed his Jedi test that day, Anakin only learned he wasn't as kick@$$ as he imagined himself to be and still had 💩 to learn. I'll tale the guy who in the momemnt learns his lesson, than the one who still is bitter about it 15 yrs later on the Death Star any day. And still proclaiming he's the Master. 🤣

I think Obi Wan did not fully let go of Anakin until his second to last duel with Vader in the Obi Wan TV series. Before that, Obi Wan did not know that Anakin/ Darth Vader survived Mustafar until the TV series began, he did let go then but not fully enough. When Obi Wan learned that Vader survived, those feelings of attachment and emotions during duel on Mustafar (you mentioned) just reignite again and return. In the Obi Wan TV series duel, that was a emotional duel because Obi Wan presented the same emotions that he had during Mustafar if not less. When Obi Wan said "Goodbye...Darth", that can be argued he has let go of Anakin for good. By the time of their final duel on the Death Star, Obi Wan has already long accepted Anakin is gone for good and no attachment to Vader anymore.

  • @chrisstowell484

The best part is that the actual Master on The Death Star in A New Hope has the satisfaction of knowing NOT ONLY has allowing the Force to flow through him in that second duel, and the simple I'm your teacher and no matter how arrogant you are if you make me defend myself and make you be a triple amputee my rage that almost pushed me to the Dark Side for you murdering and betraying the order is past, I'm still gonna teach you a lesson if WHEN I SAY LISTEN, LISTEN... EPIC Mustafar begging, please don't make me make you an amputee. Priceless. But YES, by the time it comes to A New Hope Kenobi gets the satisfaction of smirking when Anakin/Vader refers to himself as a Master. 🤣 which Kenobi knows NOT only did Vader never earn that title in Jedi Order, but even after doing Palpatine's bidding and stooging for nearly 2 decades the pathetic wannabe was still trying to claim himself higher than even the Sith esteemed him either. Always the whiny bitchboy apprentice NEVER the Master.

That revenge of the Sith alternate game ending is wrong because Anakin wanted Sidious to teach him the ways of the darkside so he could save Padmé. So it would be a cool thing to see. I don't think the high ground is the reason Anaikin lost; his skills were too good for that. I believe it was a combination of Anaikin's arrogance, Obi Wan's mastery of the defensive form, and the will of the Force. Everyone seems to forget that the will of the Force will ALWAYS prevail! Though Anaikin was the Chosen One, he still had to succumb to the will of the Force. Although Sith are known to bend the will of the Force for their needs, eventually the Force will win.

Obi wan Kenobi is an example of someone who just keeps at it until they become a master. They might not have the most natural talent, and they struggle more along the way, but just due to sheer will and training they become amazing at something. Also Kenobi had a strong connection to the force despite having a low midi-chlorian count because he had faith in himself and in the Jedi in general and the shock of Anakin falling to the dark side set him into a determination. And even when they fought he still loved his friend. Which I think Anakin can sense so that's why Kenobi is able to beat him in fights because Vader's weakness is memories of the love he had for his friends etc... If vader is cold and full of rage then he's unbeatable. And in the new show when Obi Wan Kenobi says I'm sorry for all of it. I think Anakin really had a cathartic moment with his old friend. But he tried to cover it up with the psychopathic "I killed anakin skywalker" which just shows how depressed and full of rage he is over killing Padme.

Where do you get the fact that Obi Wan had a much lower midichlorian count. One, I've never seen an official list. Two, any list that's created has him in the top 10 of Jedi with midichlorian. If you're referring to the novel Master and Apprentice, there was no mention of his levels there, either. He did have trouble connecting to the Force for a while but overcome that and progressed nicely. Obi Wan was one of the more powerful Force users amongst the Jedi of his time and one of the premier duelist of all time.

But he couldn't, if he had killed him that day the Force wouldn't have been in it. Either Kenobi would be going for revenge, and he'd himself be falling to the Dark Side. He INSTEAD taught one last lesson as a Master to his student, when he begs Anakin not to jump it's a full out self-preservation IF you make the choice to come at me I will make you a multiple amputee. End of story. The ever arrogant never listening to guidance Anakin does it anyways. EPIC. He couldn't kill Anakin. He left him for the Force/nature to handle lying on the dge of a volcanic river believing THAT would handle it. And fittingly if it had because after everything the Jedi had done for Anakin over the years in truth, yep him suffering an agonizing death after there betrayal would be The Way of the Force-so NO Jedi would have to strike that blow. Plus did Anakin at that point deserve any kind of Mercy blow? Like really? Ya sorry but I fail to think ANY Jedi would be like yep you killed our order but here we'll kindly put you out of misery you brought on all of us. Yep This is NOT the way of the Force you're looking for. So ya he didn't have to kill Vader. He PROVED his point on the field of battle, the arrogant upstart betrayer was a cocky failure of what he'd been gramted opportunity to mold himself differently and had destroyed the order. No honor, no respect, doesn't really garner much of the same in return. And the Order not emcouraging attachments DOESN'T mean the same as the implicit concept of existence that one will develop attachments to those around them. I mean really? Yoda was devastated when he realized months before Order 66 that in order to save the Jedi he must NOT let them in on the coming massacre. Yet somehow you don't think the pain of the deaths of all the Jedi at Order 66 wasn't felt by the other's BECAUSE of attachment? Having attachments isn't the same as letting those attachments overpower your duty and honor. Soldiers have families, they still have to go out and kill other people they have never met with families. Knowing they are making widows and orphans. Get it? It's ludicrous to pretend that discouraging attachments means no Jedi had any when they themselves are eachothers by definition 🤣 The key is HOW one holds attachments and when do they become harmful or not beneficial.

I for one am so sick & tired of Obi-Wan getting the blame for Anakin's turning. everyone in the S.W. universe seem to lay the blame for Anakin turning to Sidious & the Dark Side on Obi-Wan - when Anakin was a Jedi Knight no longer Obi-Wan's Padawan & Anakin was a grown man. It peeved me how in the Obi-Wan series Reva yelled that at Obi-Wan when he was literally falling to his own death. Anakin made a choice - a choice that damned the Republic & the Jedi. It had nothing to do with Obi--Wan who was guilted into training Anakin by a dying Qui-Gon who knew how to manipulate his apprentice aka Obi-Wan into doing what we all know as the most stupidest thing as Obi-Wan was not prepared to take an apprentice when he was so young & green.

I think Luke's belief that the Jedi are always, or at least usually, better lightsaber duelists is consistent with other SW lore. In particular, Darth Sidious believed the Sith had outgrown lightsabers, and considered them to only be Jedi weapons. Even in his final duel with Yoda, he knew that he wouldn't win a lightsaber fight with the grand master, and used his superior force abilities instead.

Wha??? Anakin still never was a Master, when he claims to be in a New Hope Kenobi rightfully smirks because neither Jedi NOR Sith will ever refer to him as that. Even after he betrayed and massacred one to get the title. 🤣 Vader was always conflicted. So was Obi Wan almost turned Dark Side if he'd won on Mustafar by anything other than self defense. He BEGS Anakin the arrogant never listens to orders student NOT to make him make him an amputee. The headstrong drunk with new power student says WHAT? Ya. Conflicted isn't an excuse. Yoda had to kill his best friend during the clone wars for simply NOT wanting to side with Seperatists OR the Republic and Dooku forced NO option. To where Yoda's best friend begs him to do it. Conflicted? Come on man that's what moral quandary is and exists FOR in Life AND ART. Not an argument of validity to prove one's view. Sorry. But good try. Kenobi used a forbidden move? 🤣 So massacre entire planets isn't a forbidden move? Really? Are we even having this conversation? Like gee, war and battles are always by the rules? 🤣 How about Sun Tzu the Art of War, you meet your enemy on the battlefield THEY choose, on THEIR terms if you have any intent to win. Be just as much tHEM as they are, just as fierce or brutal, but above all, use your greatest weapon BRAINS to win... Don't pretend for a moment that the world will truly get through to Islamic terrorists by locking them up for a decade or so and expecting peace to win out. Until we fight on THEIR same terms THEY won't recognize the lesson. So pretending that those with NO honor or code will somehow be ethical or live to a code is farcical. But pretending some rule overpowers self preservation? ROFLMAO. Sorry but Lightsabers either stab or slice causing amputation. While maiming isnt the goal because putting an enemy down is, doesn't make Anakin chosing to force Anakin to teach him a brutal lesson Kenobis bad. Sorry, real world we have self defense laws and even stand your ground laws in some places that says screw that nonsense. So forbidden move? 🤣 LOL sorry when you kill my whole order that made those rules the rules are kind of NOT the rules any more BUD. Come on. You're desperately making excuses for the always an apprentice NEVER a Master. The ultimate pathetic actuallys since he killed one order out of being pissed that they weren't elevating him to that level and joins the one order where he doesn't move up til he's already dying. 🤣

Somewhat amusingly, in the Revenge of the Sith novelisation it implies that Obi-Wan severing Anakin's limbs may have been an accident. "Anakin snarled a curse as he realised he'd been suckered, and leapt off his droid at Obi-Wan's back--- Half a second too slow. Obi-Wan's whirl to parry didn't meet Anakin's blade. It met his knee. Then his other knee. And while Anakin was still in the air, burned-off lower legs only starting their topple down the cliff, Obi-Wan's recovery to guard brought his blade through Anakin's left arm above the elbow. He stepped back as Anakin fell" Either way, he certainly didn't plan it that way. The Force may have planned it that way though, and Obi-Wan just let it work through him

There isn't enough physical/acting evidence that Anakin was tiring out in ROTS... But his arrogance in that moment, and wanting to end it right there might have been his hail mary to finish things by any means necessary... Even to the point of reason (of trying that move vs high ground) against one of the greatest, if not greatest Jedi's of all time. I think arrogance was his biggest downfall. Not fatigue. I think Anakin had more than enough in the gas tank to go as long as needed. In the Kenobi Series, in the training montage, I think they were alluding that Anakin's offensive brute style could very well beat Obi Wan straight up... But it was the cleverness + fight IQ that gave the Master his advantage.

i think the biggest takeaway from this breakdown is not that jedi will always be better duelists, but rather any force user will always be at their peak potential when they drop sides and simply give in to the will of the force. the same reason why palpatine feared qui gon jinn! he viewed qui gon as the most dangerous outside of yoda because he knew when it came down to it qui gon would bend the rules and always do what the force willed.

After all, Kenobi the deer immediately started a fight instead of just talking, to find out the reason for Anakin's transition to the dark side. Moreover, to solve the issue with words instead of angering Anakin, especially with his appearance. He didn't understand how his student really hated the Jedi. That there is a deeper meaning behind those words about building an empire. He did not feel that his friend was still inside, just locked in the dungeon of the dark side, as Qui-Gon would tell him later. Kenobi did not need to involve Padme, and he himself did not need to be a Jedi by the next order, but a real brother and friend who could help Anakin deal with problems before leading to such an outcome. And Yoda is no better. The order itself was doomed by unknowingly awakening the sleeping demon in Anakin, who unleashed his anger, pain, resentment and disappointment on others. Although they could have peacefully resolved the issue, at best, expel Anakin from the order so that he could establish a family life by giving him the opportunity to redeem himself. Although it was clearly the will of the Force that Qui-Gon advised to rely on.

By Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith, at the end of the Clone Wars, adult twenty-two -year old Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in his early adulthood and prime had slightly surpassed Obi-Wan. Although Obi-Wan was Anakin's Jedi master, teacher, mentor and best friend that raised and trained Anakin since he was an eight year old child in the Jedi Order of the old Galactic Republic. Both trained and fought alongside one another their whole lives training together as master and apprentice and knew one another's fighting styles inside and out. Obi-Wan's primary lightsaber combat form and swordsmanship combat style was an all defensive lightsaber combat form. Anakin's/Vader's original style was an aggressive offensive and defensive lethal lightsaber combat form and his original primary combat style. Obi-Wan's all defensive lightsaber combat form perfectly evenly matched and countered Anakin's offensive and defensive aggressive style. Their first one on one lightsaber sword duel/force battle/hand-to-hand fight on the lava ridden planet of Mustafar in episode 3 was a two -sided, evenly matched, competitive, close duel and stalemate before Anakin's fateful force jump into the air from the platform Anakin stood on to maneuver the lava and leaped hundreds of feet into the air and across the lava and attempted to jump over Obi-Wan on the higher ground level of the volcano mountain embankment and aimed to land behind Obi-Wan to deliver the killing strike to the back but Obi-Wan, who mastered the high ground advantage defeating Darth Maul the first time on the Seperatist war ship on the planet of Naboo in Episode 1 The Phantom Menace as a young late teenage/early adult eighteen-year-old Jedi Padawan apprentice to Qui-Gon until his death at the hands of Darth Maul. Used the same jump Anakin attempted to leap up from the ledge of the ship's floor he was hanging from above hundreds of feet of nothing beneath but an endless drop after using the force to pull Qui-Gon's lightsaber to his hands and surprised Darth Maul, cutting him in half. Hence why Obi-Wan warned Anakin not to try it. And Obi-Wan narrowly won the duel and severed and amputated Darth Vader's legs and left arm in one blow mid-air. Before Darth Vader's limbless human torso fell to the bottom of the volcano mountain embankment where lava burned him alive fatally and put him into the giant armored cybernetic life support suit. Vader dominated half the fight on Mustafar and if their first sword duel had continued on level ground without Obi-Wan having the high ground advantage, on flat surfaced terrain, Anakin/Darth Vader eventually would've narrowly beaten and killed Obi-Wan on Mustafar. Then he would've ruled the galaxy alongside Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious as Darth Sidious's Sith apprentice, right hand man and second in command of the Galactic Empire for a few years until Darth Vader surpassed Palpatine himself as the Chosen One. At which point Anakin/Darth Vader would've overthrown Emperor Palpatine in a fair one on one lightsaber sword duel and force battle to the death for the throne between Sith Lords master and apprentice and Vader would've beaten, destroyed and killed Emperor Palpatine and ruled the galaxy and the Galactic Empire as emperor and master Sith Lord. As Palpatine originally wanted and planned. But Obi-Wan neutralized that chance. In the giant armored cyborg life support system machine suit, Darth Vader's would be unlimited force power as the Chosen One was restricted and limited to only eighty percent of Palpatine's force power. As well as his physical mobility, swordsmanship combat skills and abilities being permanently hindered and restricted. Forcing Darth Vader to relearn and retrain himself in all the lightsaber combat forms and styles he learned, studied and mastered as a Jedi Knight and a Sith Lord and Sith apprentice to Emperor Palpatine by the end of episode 3. Vader's overconfidence, arrogance, pride and underestimating his former master was his downfall. By Episode 3 ROTS Anakin slightly surpassed Obi-Wan and Count Dooku as well. Although i believe Count Dooku held back halfway and Dooku going all out full force would've given Anakin a run for his money and it would've been a longer, closer, more evenly matched duel but prime Anakin by episode 3 still would've won. In all the battles against Count Dooku throughout the Clone Wars for three years, Count Dooku repeatedly fought and mopped the floor with both Obi-Wan and Anakin who were far less skilled in combat and less experienced by then. Either fighting Dooku one at a time or one by one in turn or alone and even together Dooku regularly outmatched and defeated both Jedi master and apprentice using his superior force powers and abilities with both the light and dark sides of the force as a former Jedi master and Sith Lord/temporary Sith apprentice to Chancellor Palpatine/Darth Sidious during the Clone Wars. Being the former Jedi master of Qui-Gon as well. Obi-Wan's late Jedi master and teacher originally and would've been Anakin's teacher if he wasn't killed by Darth Maul in episode 1. In the second duel on the Kenobi series, Obi-Wan was late middle aged, past his prime, over the hill, ten years exiled and retired, out of practice etc but still an elite well trained, master skilled and experienced sword duelist and in exile he grew stronger and powerful in the force on the light side of the force and learned from Qui-Gon's force ghost how to become one with the force itself both in life and after death. And Obi-Wan became one with the force briefly and was empowered by the force and plus driven by his mission to protect Anakin's and Padm'e's children from the Sith and narrowly defeated cyborg Darth Vader by cutting open Vader's skull helmet and facial mask after a second two sided, evenly matched, vicious, close one on one revenge rematch sword duel and force battle using their force powers and abilities. And Vader nearly won and killed Obi-Wan crushing him with rocks but Obi-Wan connected to the force to push the boulders off and in the force battle battered Vader's life support chest pannel before cutting open Vader's skull helmet and mask. Had Obi-Wan not become one with the force and been empowered by the force to win, Darth Vader, still in his prime age wise at thirty-one, and an even far more highly trained, master level skilled, deadly, experienced sword duelist than before in his early prime in episode 3 ten years before as well as being far stronger and more powerful in the force than before as the Chosen One with both sides of the force as a former Jedi Knight and Sith Lord, Darth Vader would've won and killed Obi-Wan.

2:23 “Soon Darth Vader will be more powerful than either of us.” This is a perfect example of a misquote. Darth Sidious did not say soon. This is exactly what was said. “You will not stop me. Darth Vader will become more powerful than either of us.” I have not seen Star Wars episode three revenge of the Sith in several years for the “still ring through in my head is if I watched it yesterday. Allow me to break down the dialogue. Templeton made a statement, but then sensing how powerful Yoda wasn’t a force to be canceled on his statement because he knew there was a chance a great possibility that Master Yoda would defeat him here and now. Dwelling for moment on the possibility of his eminent defeat, Darth Sidious wanted to make Yoda feel fear, by stating that his apprentice would eventually become more powerful than both of them. This backfired, because Yoda had this to say in response “Misplaced may be faith in you’re new apprentice. As is your faith in the Darkside of the force.” let’s break this one down.. basically Yoda is unafraid, because in this moment he believes that Anakin will turn away from the Darkside or at least there’s a possibility Anakin is redeemable from the Darkside. Yoda finish it off with saying that Darth Sidious would lose bcuz His faith in the dark side was also miss placed. Personally Yoda’s second statement, was a little bit weaker. However the portion about Anakin was 100% through.

Interesting question/video idea that just occurred to me: would Sidious have succeeded in bringing about the fall of the Jedi and Republic without Anakin's fall? Obviously Anakin's fall was part of Sidious' plan but if this hadn't worked out, would another individual have been able to replace Anakin. I guess Anakin's powers and abilities were essential to Sidious' plan.

What is that supposed to mean? If Anakin could have beaten Obi Wan he would have. He didn't because he couldn't. Obi Wan was the better of the two. Combat is more than speed and strength. There are plenty of football games where the stronger and faster team loses to the slower, smaller team with superior strategy. Obi Wan won because he was better. It's just that simple. Anakin wasn't ready. He beat him again later.

Naw that wasn't what he was talking about when he said Soon Vader would become more powerful than either of us. He was saying eventually after a couple or years or so. Sidious training would have done it because his training is much harsher just like Yoda's training was top tier when he only had to train one being. Look at all their students just to see the proof.

Anakin was like a full grown Tiger attacking a human that had trained him until he turned on his owner.
