Maul was brought up by sidious in the ways of the ancient sith warriors, its no surprise he would have a sense of warriors pride and honor when you consider this. The ancient sith were warriors and conquerers whe compared to the modern sith who focused mostly on guile and manipulation. Sideous did this because he wanted Maul not as a true sith and apprintice but as an assassin. So he gave him the old outdated teachings and all of their perceived weaknesses and that likely included this honor. You have no idea! It’s implied that Qui-Gon would’ve killed Maul in the desert of Tatooine had he not had to flee the scene. Jinn was one of those masters that was hard to catalogue but regardless he most likely would’ve been grandmaster material had he lived
I'm reminded of a simple lesson I heard in a history class. "There was a time when some people considered it cowardly to use projectile weaponry in battle. Guess what happened to those people?" If you are unwilling to win at any cost, you will lose to those who are, regardless of your righteousness. I'm also reminded of a Star Trek quote, "In war, there is nothing more honorable than victory." - Worf, warning about potential cloaked Klingon warships. That said, I could understand Maul being dissatisfied or disappointed with the kill, not being able to simply overpower or overcome Qui-Gon's skill. However, there's no shame in stunning an opponent to create an opening; especially, when death is on the line.

I don't see any problems with the hilt stun specifically and of course the Sith are going to do whatever anyway so you want to be prepared for that, but I think that throwing morality out the window and becoming like them is in fact cowardly because it shows you don't have sufficient skill to win the hard and right way and leaves you just a survivor, not someone who won with their values intact It's very Sithlike thinking and I really don't agree with it If using children as hostages was the best way to win a battle for example, did you really deserve to win?

I think there is a lot of myth about the topic of ranged weapons being seen as dishonorable. For example, this is often said of the Samurai, but the Samurai had always valued archery above all else in actual battle for most of their history with the sword being a backup weapon until peace had already been mostly secured in the later tokugawa shogunate where it was the weapon more closely associated with them as they would patrol cities with them. Even firearms were typically only seen as dishonorable in propaganda by those at a disadvantage and not in a serious fashion.

Waiting for Obi-wan would've been more difficult than you make it sound, and it's important to note that Qui-gon was actually doing better when it was 1-on-1. The simple fact is, that at this point, Qui-gon was a much better fighter than Obi-wan against an opponent that was his equal. Believe it or not, having to account for a less skilled or experienced fighter in battle can actually be detrimental as you have to account for them and tailor you attacks accordingly. Once it was just him and Maul, Qui-gon was able to fight in the manner that best suited him. He was trained, by Dooku, to be a *dualist* in combat. There's no guarantee that Obi-wan could've changed anything, or that Maul wouldn't have used him to the same effect, forcing Qui-gon to jump to his Padawan's defense instead of remaining on the offensive that had given Maul so much trouble.

@@NavyDave219 Except for the fact that Dooku was stronger when he fought Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi. He was simply ordered by Palpatine to not kill Anakin during the duel. Dooku made a single mistake that cost him the duel. He held back for too long and he prodded Anakin too much. For other Jedi, Dun Möch would off-balance them and allow Dooku to take advantage of their sloppiness. However, he did not quite know what he would unleash. There is also the fact that Dooku is a Force capacitor and Anakin is a Force conduit. Basically, Dooku can control the Force more minutely and precisely, telekinetically moving an opponent's blade just that couple of inches away from his blade so that he can strike them. But, this precision and attention to detail comes at the expense of longevity, as this can actively drain his reserves. Anakin is a conduit, because he just lets it flow out of him. As Dooku loses his strength over the course of a fight, Anakin ramps up in output. Dooku possessed a superior acquired power and skill with the Force, and was a better duelist overall. But, age and his fighting style proved to be his downfall. Another point is that (much like Anakin's friends and associates) Dooku did not quite know how much of a monster Anakin could be when pushed to his limits. Besides, the Clone Wars lasted three short years, and Dooku maintained a consistent performance across the board. He was undeniably one of the most powerful beings of his era, as he was stated in and out of universe to be Mace Windu's direct equal. There's a lot more context to Dooku's defeat than just "he atrophied and Anakin surpassed him". The same can really be said of any duel in the films, but this is one of the most packed cases.

I don't think he was tired, just surprised. While Qui Gon had participated in several battles before, none of them were against a real opponent and as a Maverick himself he probably never expected another lightsaber duelist to pull something he didn't expect. Where as Maul's Juyo and relative youth have him the power and stamina to keep going. What forced Maul to use a dirty trick though was the diffrence in skill. That is funny, that so much ability is dictated by how strong you are in the force. It's why Anakin likes to do all of those stupid consecutive backflips in his fight, because he's using the force to do it, and he can literally do it all day (he's so strong)
@enki6676

I don't know if it's just me, but I always thought that Ataru doesn't fit Qui-Gon, Ataru being the acrobatic form, and Qui-Gon i.e. Liam Neeson being of such a strong and heavy build, Qui-Gon not having been very acrobatic and nimble in his fighting, especially when you compare him to Yoda who used that same fighting form. Hard to believe that Yoda and Qui-Gon used the same fighting style, seeing the two of them in action. I think Anakin's form 5 Djem So would've fit Qui-Gon much better, being one of the most physical forms, heavily relying on physical strength. But it was also a highly offensive and aggressive form, which might not have fit his nature as a diplomat and peacekeeper. But then again, so was Ataru. But ultimately, all those different fighting forms were retro-actively created by the fans and attributed to their users in the Expanded Universe, which was never really considered canon by Lucas but more of an alternate universe, and he didn't incorporate it in his movies, even though he probably took some inspiration here and there. From everything that's presented, hadn't Maul resorted to a foul strike, Qui-Gon, at best could've beaten Maul on his own, with some difficulty. At worst, he could've stalled long enough for a very amped up Obi-Wan to run assist, and eventually overpower the Sith apprentice. His mission was to kill the Jedi Master but he did so by means of trickery and not solely on skill. He achieved his objective but he did so underhandedly using the hilt. He knew very well Qui Gon was his superior especially in the force.
This is why I love the books and learning internal affairs of the Star Wars characters. There are thoughts, emotions, and power dynamics that the movies cannot accurately depict. In the movie, Maul seemed confident and voracious, but by this information he was cautious and buying his time. Knowing that Qui Gon Jinn could have gotten the upper hand and ended the fight early if Maul didn't retreat into a more defensive and tactical mindset. It's not very often that a Star Wars story has a Jedi being the aggressor and forcing a Sith to go on the defensive. There have been other examples of this, but none of them quite as profound as this example. Maul literally feared for his life if he dropped his guard too early in the fight. He fought with precision and mindfulness rather than his usual ferocity and "recklessness". He wasn't expecting Qui Gon to be expecting every move Maul made from the beginning of the fight. He had to resort to defense and a cheap trick, or he would have died.
Being my favourite Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn had a short time of life in the big screen, but still I'll give you my thoughts on this scene. I believe that the main mistake he made was that he let himself become focused on Anakin's future way too much, to the extent that he lost his focus. If he had fallen back to Form III, he'd have exhausted Maul & he'd have easily killed him! Unfortunately, his desire not to leave Anakin's future to chance made him reckless & more aggressive, than he should have been against a Form VII master. Juyo is a powerful form which no duelist should take lightly!

Indeed. Thats what separates him from other Sith. Maul has always been different in that he sees the value in combat in and of itself. Not just as a means to an end. Vader was somewhat similar to Maul in this regard. However, Vader's raw resentment and vendetta against the Jedi obscured his honor.
This makes me think that Maul intentionally threw the match against Obi Wan when they fight on Tatooine and he loses because why would he use an even dirtier trick by throwing sand and then doing the exact same move he was so ashamed of and especially against the only person who already saw him use it. The Maul on Tatooine was not the same Maul from the phantom menace, he was broken he was bitter and he was old. Even if he wanted too he wouldn't be able to fight Kenobi like he had fought Jin, his body simply couldn't do it any longer. More still the mall on Tatooine was a bitter husk of his former self and resented Kenobi blaming him for everything that had happened to him, his hatred and desire to destroy Kenobi far outweighed his desire for a clean honorable victory. In Maul's mind anything was acceptable so long as Kenobi died, and this obsession likely played into his decision to use the tactic. A tactic that only worked when he in his prime was fighting an aged opponent after a long drawn out engagement. I think the show runners used his decision to use the same tactic not to show that Maul threw the rematch with Kenobi intentionally but to show the true magnitude of Maul's fall. I don't believe the "Form IV made Qui-Gon tired which is why Maul ended up beating him" excuse because people seem to forget that for a lot of the fight, Maul was engaged with 2 Jedi - an old experienced master and a youthful padawan. Fighting 2 opponents will always be more tiring than fighting a younger one. Maul was a better fighter than either because he'd been pretty much exclusively trained for decades to be a Jedi killer and had the advantage of knowing how Jedi fight whilst the Jedi had not engaged a Sith in forever. But Qui-Gon's skill and endurance surprised him which meant he got put on the defensive for longer than planned and got lucky with the opportunity for the old "divide and conquer". Maul won because he adapted and Qui-Gon lost because he allowed himself to be led into a trap. You could argue that both Qui-Gon and Maul lost that day because they both underestimated their opponent, i.e. Qui-Gon vs Maul and Maul vs Obi-Wan.
If Maul hadn't used that "dirty trick", I don't think I could call him a Sith. They often use whatever works, right?
Don't feel bad, Maul. After all "Any fight that you can walk away fro....".......oh right.
While on a planet far far far away Darth Maul's little brother is scaring a pair of exorcists.
I like in Rebels the Obi-wan Mail fight, Obi wan switches his stances 2-3 times, form 1 form 3 (he thinks for a second) and then switches to form 4 baiting Maul to use that same “trick” he employed against Master Qui-Gon.
I agree 100% with this video
2:45 love that misspoke
It really says a to about Maul. He lacks patience and gets desperate to end the duel. He tried the same move on Obi wan in Rebels after wondering the desert on Tatooine, possibly for hours and of course failed. He used a similar move on Ahsoka when he was trying to get away from her and was probably embarrassed that he was struggling against a Palawan and teenage girl.

I love it, not to mention is why Obi-Wan switched from it and was like nope I see the weakness in it...I shall be better. Interesting video
I never noticed the blow to the chin that stunned him. I must have missed that 2 dozen times, trying to see why Qui gon just stood there
If Disney did that fight, Qui-Gon probably would have survived the stab to the abdomen, considering a wound to the stomach now seems to not be fatal, according to Disney. 🙄🙄
The Legends versions of Maul And Grievous are so similar in there mindsets when it comes to combat they are warriors at heart even before Maul became a sith he had a sense of honor to some degree just as Grievous did before he became a cyborg yeah.
One huge thing to keep in mind is that Darth maul was of the zabrak species who have 2 hearts meaning that he had unrivaled endurance wile in combat. He could wear down almost anyone which is essentially what he did to the 60 yr old master.
That stab is survivable.
The existentialism of this dueling concept is amazing. I don't think someone like qui gon desired to "win" the duel. Just to survive it
I love the new story behind the scenes and I hope a fanfic what if comes out
I always knew qui gon was powerful but to know he almost won speaks levels
I really wish they gave Maul his real due in Phantom Menace. They really didn’t do him justice after seeing Clone Wars and Rebels.
Was he more ashamed of that than letting a Padawan surprise him and cut him in twain?
It's very telling that Maul was basically in retreat the entire time he was dueling with Qui Gon mano a mano. He was absolutely not the retreating type, but did so almost the entire time he was engaged with this Jedi master.
"You are skilled, but this is not a dance."
Great video bro. Alls fair in love and war.
I feel like someone should digitally re- choreograph that whole duel all together. I would very much like to see Qui Gon actually performing Ataru moves blended with the lightsaber styling from his master Count Dooku.
If you deal in killing, any effort is expected, as the pray will always strughle against the assassin.
Qui-Gon actually quickly dispatched of Maul, but Obi-Wan tried to use force speed and fell down the reactor shaft. The entire saga from then on is actually Obi-Wan's coma induced halucinations.
I would take into consideration Maul's fighting forms 7,6, 4. I would add 2, 3 and both variants of 5.
The visual storytelling of the duel on Naboo is surprisingly well executed.
I have always enjoyed swordplay. Which started with star wars. I remember being shocked when Qui-Gon lost the duel .
It is dirty, it is underhanded, it is shameful... But with one's life on the line, a dirty trick like *this* , in my eyes, is understandable. While I agree with Maul, he deserved better, I do not belittle maul for the tactic he may have *had* to use to win the battle.

I don't understand how this is a dirty trick. All of this would have been fair game in a longsword duel. If a lightsaber is a weapon, then _all of it_ is a weapon.
I never thought he would be pissed at the jedi for not picking him up.
God, I love Star Wars. Good, Bad, Silly. If one looks at it from a certain point of view, they can find joy in it again.
Qui gon is in the back talking about yeah wait till you meet my master... he gonna kick your ass and my ass for lol's...
The duel between them was even and the ending blow by hitting Qui-Gon's chin and stunning him was a smart move to delver the final blow. I do not see it as a cheap move but a smart move.
In my opinion there is one problem with your theory. I agree that Darth Maul might’ve been ashamed of using the hilt of his saber, but in Star Wars Rebels Darth Maul tried to use that same move on Obi-Wan. That’s how Maul died, obi-Wan predicted his move.
I feel this moment at the time was confusing to me. I got the idea from Heir to the Empire that connecting to the force as Quigon did was a fantastic form of Czikszentmihalyi’s “flow state”, where one is so tapped into what they are doing and aware of what’s going on around them, that they are not even thinking about it. However, in the case of the the force, the awareness would extend to the whole of interconnected space-time. The only way I could understand Maul’s victory was a very Game of Thrones-y deromamticizing of such things. It was painful to have my expectations subverted ;-) It came across to me like the Jedi training and connection to the force didn’t matter, or that it was the will of the force that both Quigon and Maul die. Perhaps there was too much dominance of light side users and the rise of Palpatine and the Empire are the Force balancing itself out? Was there some flaw in Quigon’s connection, or were the dark side and Maul simply more powerful? This video is an interesting take on that.
Hilt Strike has always been a part of the Soresu Form. it is as dirty of a trick as using force stasis or force choke then striking them down.

Finally, a worthy opponent. Our battle will be legendary
I personally think that if the original trilogy didn't exist, and the writer thus didn't have an outcome for this fight in mind yet, the chances of Qui Gon killing Maul are pretty much the same as it ending the way it did in the movies.
Qui Gon was a overpowered Jedi and knew it, that is why he unlike many other Jedi focused on the living force rather than focusing on what the council believed was the correct path of the jedi.
Form 4 and Form 7 are only suppose to be used in short bursts as they are very taxing on the body. Mastery of other forms is encouraged as different situations require a different approach.
You literally made this shit up😵
Honor doesn't win wars, it wins you death. Before going into any fight, consider carefully if you are willing to do anything to win. If not, expect that you will lose if the opponent is willing.
I never knew this. This puts Maul in a New light for me
This is a really interesting observation in the lore considering you don't normally see someone strike their opponent with the hilt

Lmao the man really said "I'm too old for this i I don't have time" and finished it in one swing
In the words of Darth Bane: Honor is for the living. Dead is dead.
Maul was so strategic i that duel. Watch as he masterfully leads the jedi through a maze of lasers and hallways, separating them nearly the entire fight. Brilliant.
Interestingly enough, he still attempted the same manouver to kill Obi Wan on Tatooine.
After reading the Jedi Apprentice books, going back to this fight only elevates Maul more, Qui-Gon is monstrously strong just from his imposing height, let alone the extra advantage using the Force provides.
does anyone know where / or which comic that art work of Qui-Gon at 00:25 is from? it's awesome! Thanks in advance
"you have no honor" "no, he did."
In a fight to the death one has to do what one has to do. Maul had nothing to be ashamed of....aside from being arrogant towards Kenobi resulting in his getting chopped in half.
Why Every TITLE on this Channel is Essentially an ABSURD Question
Couldn't have said it better myself!
Any combatant knows that there is no such thing as a dirty trick in mortal combat. It is a sublime move and ends the duel before he is outnumbered again.
I'm gonna be honest, It constantly feels like Star Wars is in a constant state of trying to retcon past writing mistakes.
Qui Gon knew fully he waz about to meet death. In doing so completing the physical role in life and hiz training to the will of the force. Becoming more powerful than anyone could imagine
What is the background music towards the end of the video called?
