"The money power preys upon the nation in time of peace and conspires against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, more selfish than bureaucracy. I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me, and causes me to tremble for the safety of our country. Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people, until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the republic is destroyed." - Abraham Lincoln.

Nice analysis. In 1987 I was doing bass tech work for a band called Funhouse in LA, a glam punk band and was setting up the bassist rig for the show. Unknown to me I thought the front of house sound engineer was the only other person the room while we sound checked Mary's rig. He had me go through several styles of bass playing to get level and eq adjustments. After about ten minutes another man walked up to the stage and asked to talk to me. He said he wanted me to meet someone. I told him I was kind of busy but he then stated it was Julian Lennon. Of course, I didn't believe him because I didn't see him. Now, the place (Roosevelt Hotel) in Hollywood has a large hall for shows/concerts so I couldn't see all the way to the back where Lennon was sitting with his entourage. Around 20 people including 4 very large body guards who to say the least, good at their job. I was introduced to Lennin who asked me if I would audition for his band for a limited tour coming up. My words verbatim. " No offense Mr. Lennon, I can't stand your type of music." I was into hard rock. His main assistant, a very tall women looked like I just slapped him. Her face expression was priceless. Lennin himself was very cool with what I said because he admired my honesty which is virtually non-existent in Hollyweird. One thing about meeting him though...you can tell you're way out of your league financially, his hands looked they never did any type of labor and his clothes were not store bought, but immaculate custom made. The statement is right. Stars get caught up in a fantasy world of "Yes" men and women who because of this behavior cause more damage then good for their clients.

Most artistic people are sensitive. And by that nature, easily hurt. And ‘show business’ is a business of rejection. So I can see how people who are used to hearing NO, well they’ve been banking resentments...and those resentments collect interest. And when success comes and they are given even a modicum of power-BOOM! Next you thing you know, the meek guitar player from me mid-west is yelling at a production assistant cause his coffee is cold.

And that thing Joe goes on to describe about "auditioning for things" - that's not just actors, that's the daily life of every damn near every person on the planet. Putting on masks to impress others, be they true or false, might be one of the few universal characteristics of our species (or as universal as nearly 8 billion individuals can ever be).

I have to admonish myself. I came on here with a preconceived notion of what this man was going to be like, based on the serious nature of his music. I mistakenly thought he’d be another self-important wind-bag that has lost site of everyday life. I’m very glad (and a little ashamed) to say I was wrong. He truly seems like a sincere, intelligent and truly compassionate person. Lesson learned.

Either you haven't sat down and listened to it a few times or you're just losing your mind with that age. Sounds like the only one pretending or wishing to be young is you what do you want the band to say? "Sorry for not having a mid life crisis?" Even without the fame that Maynard and bandmates enjoy (?), it's relatively easy to come to the conclusion that being a music person involves openess beyond the ordinary levels, and a great deal of guardedness, and self shelter as well. Staying real, and true to yourself is the only way to operate within that world, as well as maintenance of a humble attitude.
