He's clearly IN his element, and is being interviewed by a well respected, well spoken peer who is having a conversation with him. This isn't a run of the mill interview with the same "how do you guys write a song" generic questions. I've noticed that Maynard is himself in interviews when the person he speaks with is just genuine with him and isn't acting like a robot just there to get specific answers from him. I never knew that radio stations used compression and that it varied by station. That totally makes sense. It never occurred to me that they might process songs differently for movies too. So many times, I've been walking out during the closing credits and the music playing (even if it's a song I've heard before) sounds phenomenal.

  • @Viper-dz2kw

Yeah I read a story a long time ago about how radio station processing is part of what helped nirvana blow up, because the way they were used to compressing music was not configured for their extreme loud soft dynamics and it just made them sound gigantic compared to everyone else on the stations at the time, or something along those lines

  • @Rr0gu3_5uture

It's not a gimmick for radio stations, they have to adhere to power standards and such. There's several things they do to the signal before broadcasting, and compression in modern times is more likely to just be a perceived effect- from what I've gathered it's more like multiband expanders and maximizers. Nowadays, it's probably just a black box processor with all kinds of automated and/or pre-programmed features. As for theaters, your enjoyment is probably due to the effect of just being a theater. Large enclosed rooms with sound design and acoustic treatment is kind of the ideal listening environment, but who knows, maybe that multimillion dollar movie took an already professionally produced hit song and just slapped a compressor on it lol

Listening to conversations like this, I'm happy I hung onto my old stereo equipment and big arse speakers. Having access to my dad's stereo system as a kid, then being able to build my own and experiment with the sound of album has literally shaped my perception of life and the world around me. It's so easy to forget what music really is listening to a random whatever song on some crappy phone or even the best headphones or car stereo. The music becomes flat and lifeless. Maynard talking about the old amps, sitting around with a left and a right speaker perfectly positioned in a room so you get those sound waves bouncing around just right, that brings back some good memories. Oddly enough, my old equipment is still going strong, while more modern/trendy/convenient equipment such as my phones and digital formats have crapped out on me and had to be replaced. That being said, if I had the money for some of the stuff out I've seen for sale out there...never mind my own house, I would attempt to rattle my neighbor's house!

Mutt Lang was the master at understanding that people listen to music typically on crappy equipment or in their car which was also probably crappy. He made music sound good on everything.
