Exactly why I think MMA GOAT debates are stupid. Our favorite fighters today will just be a footnote in the sport’s history 100 years from now just like the Boxing greats of 100 years ago. MMA is still evolving as well. Most champs of 20 years ago will have a hard time breaking through the rankings of today’s MMA.

Ben Askren was the best investment the ufc has ever made, without him there never would have been the fastest knock out flying knee from masvidal that catapulted his already successful career into super stardom, the knock out of till in his home town, to the iconic three piece and a soda, to the fastest knock out in ufc history, to fighting for the bmf belt.

The sport has progressed to a level where massive skill gaps at the top of a division are less common. One dominant champion that has a specific style will drastically change the level of competition at the top of a division because people are going to be training to defeat that style of fighter. And at that point its really up to who puts on a better performance on the night.

I find it shocking that anyone would consider Sean Strickland's win over Izzy to be "the biggest upset in UFC history". Sean was rightly an underdog, sure, but Izzy has only won one fight convincingly in several years and lost just two fights ago. It's not like Sean was facing a peak Anderson Silva, like Chris Weidman did. Or Holly Holm obliterating Ronda Rousey.

He lost to Alex Pereira, who was considered far more dangerous on the feet than Sean, and who Izzy also KOed immediately after. The only fight he didn't win convincely was against Whitaker, who was also considered much better than Sean. So I don't agree with this framing. Yeah Izzy has been mostly winning on points, but the idea that Sean would beat Izzy on points was still hugely unexpected.

@@ubcroel4022 I agree, and I think Dana knows that, which is why he immediately suggested a rematch with Strickland and Izzy. I think the rematch would be a big ppv in itself, however if Izzy loses again, that isn’t good for the ufc at all. But I’m sure they will do everything they can to nurture upcoming talent in attempt to create the future line up off ppv stars. Thing is though it’s a risk anytime a champion fights, and the fights we want made are usually actually made, unlike boxing, where champs often avoid fights, and protect their record at all costs, Which can create a more volatile and unpredictable nature in mma/ specifically the ufc. But it’s part of the territory I guess. I just hope the ufc don’t start tinkering with the narrative as much as they do in boxing

The reason so many champs lost their belt is because of ego. Valentina lost her belt and didnt win the rematch because she couldnt wrap her head around Alexa being better. The exact thing happened to Amanda Nunes in the first pena fight. The exact same thing happened to Izzy in the strickland fight. Exact same thing happened to aljo in the o'malley fight. Same thing happened to usman against edwards. Most title losses is from champs thinking theyre invincible, then being proven wrong.

Very rare to find a champ losing while also being very aware of how tough of a opponent he had. Brandon Moreno vs Pantoja is that, champ knew EXACTLY how dangerous the opponent was and respected that, still lost though, but in a better light. Same with Oliveira. Oliveira knew Islam was dangerous and respected that, just he was so mad from the trash talk that he fought emotionally and got brutalized for it.

I don’t think it’s just about a fighter’s skill; there’s also the element of tactics and pre-existing injuries which can also effect outcomes. A fighter’s never going to tell us whether they’re coming into the fight with some injury or other because they don’t want the other fighter to know. Sometimes they can still win regardless but it can be a factor for a loss. Also, the champs are really well studied and opponents will look for weaknesses and ways they can capitalise. And also they have to be highly disciplined and motivated, fit and fast, and be able to adapt on the fly. But mma isn’t like boxing where losses hold great sway on a record. In mma, or any martial art it’s extremely rare for any fighter not to lose a few. Even the hall of famers have losses on their record. I don’t think it’s a big deal necessarily unless they’ve reached the top and start losing and then lose their appetite for the game. I don’t think Strickland will stay champion for long because there’s some excellent hungry fighters coming up. This is partly why I love the sport so much, because the best fight the best.

The reason champs keep losing their belts is because they are too old. In the past, fighters earned title shots with 2-3 wins. They could win gold early in their careers and defend the title while in their prime. These days, fighters win 10-12 fights in a row to get title shots lol. They’re already in their 30s once they finally get their shot.

  • @Kiercho

1:34 Anderson Silva should have 11 consecutive title defences on his record, one of his opponents in his early title reign missed weight so that fight wasn’t classified as a title fight even though it was since Anderson made weight and defended his belt.

Jamal maybe but again likely too old, Sergei pavlovich? If so then bro doesn’t get past jones or Tom aspinall IMO. Song ya dong is probs the biggest potentiality on that list that I could agree with

Geathje KOd pourier O’Malley smoked Sterling Strickland smoked Izzy That’s 4 ppvs in a row the significant underdog has not just won the fight but completely dominated. Even the fight nights have been underdog heavy, I’m really curious to see the ratio for underdogs winning last year to this year.

The sport at its highest popularity has only really been there for 20 years unlike boxing that’s existed for hundreds of years so now the longer mma exists the more styles, knowledge, diets and weight cutting hacks develop. So it’s harder to stay champion than like GSP/Silva’s era for example. Nick Diaz a contender back then would get decapacitated by today’s Cannonier, Vettori, Costa, etc.
