Sydney Baldwin good to hear you’ll be upgrading your gerbil’s home! I haven’t owned a gerbil myself, but I’ve heard many times that gerbil’s will often chew through plastics, so it’s recommended to give them a glass tank. Might be worth looking into. Either way, good luck!

Gerbils and hamster are very different- main issue with the critter trail for gerbils is plastic - no plastic for gerbils - you can also get too large of a tank for gerbils unlike hamsters - a 20gal is recommended for 2 -3 gerbils (and they are social creatures unlike hamsters that are solitary animals) and that’s a 20tall not long as burrowing space is most important for them - I’ve heard 29 gal is the max size you want for 2-3 gerbils. max size is debated but above a 40 breeder everyone agrees it adds stress instead of enrichment for gerbils

@@NitroBex you can not get too large of a tank for gerbils. You just have to make sure they have enough hiding spots and space to burrow for them to feel safe. It's not like they have small glass tanks out in the wild. Also 20 gal for 2-3 gerbils is so so small.

I just don’t understand why anyone would buy those anyways. They’re wayyyy overpriced and you’d think someone could just look at the and realize it’s not suitable for a living creature. I made my hamster’s 1000sqin bin cage for like $35 and a little ‘diy’ing. It’s so much cheaper and better!

Even though i never plan on keeping a hamster, i still watch videos like this. I own many intelligent birds and so i know what its like to have to read/hear stories about animal cruelty due to small and un interactive environments. Its so heartbreaking and aggravating to see ignorant people who think living and breathing animals are decorations and refuse to take proper care for them. I really like watching your vids though, they are so informative and you are definitely making a difference. 🦜

It's pretty sad that cage size is an issue for pretty much any animal that isn't a dog or cat. Bird? Yeah I'll just put it in a rounded top aesthetic cage. Hamster? Yeah I'll put it in a jolly rancher colored cage. Betta Fish? Yeah I'll just put it in a vase with no filter. Cause small animals just suddenly love cages just as much as your dog/cat.

I can't understand how those tiny cages are still a thing in the US. They are not even pretty, just sad and cheap looking. A big tank with natural toys and hidies looks so pretty. If I had the space I would love to get a hamster und give it a super pretty, natural tank. (I have 6 budgies in a big aviary and they take up all my pet space). The cage / aviary situation is definitely rather nice in Germany. I recently bought a quarantine cage and had to get something bigger than I wanted because they had no cage as small as I wanted.

Thank you for making this video! I work at a Petsmart and I always ALWAYS tell people that the cages we sell aren't suitable for the hamsters. Most of the time people take my advice and end up getting either a bin cage or a huge tank. There are times though where we get people who really want a hamster and even after I tell them how to give them the best care...they don't want to go through the hassle of doing that. So they get a small hamster cage and I have no power to stop them at that point :( On the bright side, I am going to be adopting one of our older hamsters soon and am getting the biggest bin I can find in Walmart :3

Ya, when I got my pet mice my parents would only let me get 2 small crittertrails to connect. I knew it was to small, so after about a week I finally convinced them to get a bigger tank for my mice. They didn’t understand why small rodents need so much space Edit: also this seems to happen to rabbits too. Like at the local pet store they sell bunnies, and for most of the animals they sell like a starter pack with it, but I already know that the cage they would give out for that price would be way too small. Sadly the couple next to me in the store was like “oh the bunnie is like $80, but if we get the included set up it’s like $50 (ish, idk exactly but it included the basics to survive). I cried inside cause the baby bunnies were soooo cute.

Thanks for your video!!! You’re very right on everything you said! When I got my hammy the associate couldn’t even answer some basic questions I asked him about hamsters . I have a medium sized cage for my hamster with two levels , but also have a huge bin I used to make my hammy a huge second home/playground that she loves. Like you mentioned, it’s an inexpensive way to make a huge home for your hamster for an inexpensive price ad you can use that extra saved money for treats, accessories and hamster toys . You should make a video about hamster wheels!!! I’ve noticed a lot of people use the wrong exercise wheels or wrong size for their critter . I enjoyed watching your video 👍

I appreciate this video so much! I had this friend who kept her hamster in a critter-trail with like maybe an inch of bedding (if I’m being generous) and for awhile I thought it was okay- until I did my own research on getting a hamster for myself. I felt honestly destroyed and I did everything in my power to change how she cares for her hamster. I did my best to educate her on how to care for hamster and even gave her my smaller tank (maybe a 20-30 gallon tall, I currently keep mine in 40+ gallon tank) for her hamster and yet still she neglects her hamster because she bought a rabbit. Of course I don’t know anything about rabbits but from my common sense I don’t think the rabbit is doing to well either. She has basically forgotten about her hamster (who is now paralyzed and dying after having her (a sweet little winter white) for maybe a year). The worst part is she put those fence things that you can buy to take your hamster out and handle it- well she put it in her tank which caused this poor baby to be impaled and paralyzed (not to mention she hasn’t done anything about it). I am throughly disgusted, don’t think I can ever look at her the same way and honestly I have no idea what to do at this point someone help me.

Thank you for addressing this issue! I used to have hamsters in the past, and we could only get them a critter trail. We connected two of them and a bin cage we made, we tried to give them space but we couldn’t do it good enough. So once my last hamster passed, I stopped getting hamsters because I felt like we couldn’t provide it what we needed to with. So I waited a while, for a long time I was sad about how quick they would pass away, so I got a rabbit. This time I made sure to do all the research I could before getting her. She used to be free roam in my bedroom, but since we had to move her to my other house we couldn’t do that. Instead she has an 4x4 feet X-Pen and soon we’re buying her another one to connect to it. I hope this story can help people learn. Just make sure to always do your research before getting any pet!

Hey Tyler, when you mentioned Germany as a good example for hamster cages I was pretty flattered because that's were I live. I've been owning hamsters for 4 years now and all I wanted to do since the beginning was to give the hamsters the best and most natural live I can offer them so my cages have all been at least the minimum. Now my two hamsters live in an aquarium and a self made wooden cage way bigger than the suggested size ( don't know how many square inches since we have square centimeters here) I'm very impressed on how awesome your cage looks and I can't thank you enough for spreading awareness on these horrible hamster prisons. I really liked this video and keep helping clueless pet owners on how to improve the life of their furry friend! XO Kathi

When buying any animal a home just think about it like this - Scale the size of yourself down to your animal's then ask yourself when looking at a potential home "would I be happy with a living space this size for the rest of my life?" For the average person a critter trail is like a 10 x 10 room, but instead of a room it's their entire house and they often don't get to go out as much as they'd like either. Do this for any animal, furry or not. Thank you Ty for making this vid.

It took me forever to choose a cage for my syrian Pumpkin, she's already getting alot bigger so I wanted to make sure I got the best cage for her. Thank you for these reviews it's always nice knowing what to buy or not to buy for these little ones. Side note, I can't believe how many super tiny hamster cages are sold it's so cruel

Love this! The pet store I got my ham at told me to get a tiny thing, took it home and cried at how the hamster hated it so much. It is a jail. I returned it and told them they're assholes to recommend that to me. I went to Ikea and got the biggest plastic bin I could find and I made holes in it and left the lid off for ventilation, and this is when I didn't have a cat. I would recommend lid on with lots of holes if you have a cat. Love your set up Tyler, I would have loved that but don't have the room for that big of one

Note for europeans (not sure if it goes beyond europe): shop on ZooPlus for your small pets! I had my dwarf hamster in the Alaska cage from there and I paid like £28 for it. German standards are the absolute best pet care standards and I'm proud to go by them. Edit: for literally everyone in the world you can convert the Ikea Detolf cage into a perfect tank cage for your hamster. That's 5 feet of unbroken floor space to fill with all sorts of toys, chews and digging space to keep the animal happy for their whole life!

The main reason these cages are still around is that people have this idea that hamsters are good beginner pets for children, so the cages are made to appeal to kids. The tubes LOOK fun and colorful. It LOOKS like a nice little cage to put on a kid's dresser. And perhaps the biggest factor is that there aren't good alternatives sold in pet stores. Lots of parents go for convenience over the animal's well being. They want to buy everything they need in a single transaction, including the animal itself. I work at petsmart and I have to fight against this mentality every shift. People HATE it when I tell them that they should go to a different store to get a bin for their setup that they will have to modify for ventilation. They think "if this was really harmful to the animal then they wouldnt be selling it. This employee is clear full of bs." In short, my job sucks

I used to do this (had my parents buy the cute little hamster cages not actually meant to give a hamster the right amount of space) so glad there’s a lot of people on KZread giving the right info now my hamster snowball has a much larger space and he’s so happy ☺️

I'm babysitting a friend's syrian hamster for a month while she moves, and when she dropped him off to me I was pretty shocked to see that she was keeping him in a 15 gallon tank with scented bedding and a wheel that was literally the size of him. 😱 Luckily I had a wheel left over from years ago when I had rats, and the next day I bought him a huge bin and some aspen shavings. Cost me around 20$. She was really apologetic when I told her about the changes I made and said that everything in there was "all she had". Like dayum girl don't get a hamster if you only have a 15 gallon tank and a wheel that wouldn't fit even the smallest of rodents. Apparently she was planning on getting a gecko instead of a hamster. Big difference.

I have a 40 gallon breeder for my little hamboy. We built him a little loft on one end of his tank (the legs of the loft do not interfere with his floor space on his main level) and he LOVES it. It might be fun to recreate a Jenna Marbles video and do DIY projects for your hamster. 😂 Thanks for sharing this information with everyone!

so glad we kept my hamster in a hand-me-down rat cage :) he was so happy and always loved hanging out with me and my family! he was the sweetest thing too! he only ever bit me once and it was because i woke him from his beauty sleep! i had gotten one of those wooden dog house things from michaels that your supposed to paint at the same time i got my hamster, and it ended up becoming a bed for him. he never chewed on it, but slept in it every single night (even though his butt hung out because he was too big to fit in it!)

I used to keep all of my hamsters in around a 60 gallon breeder tank (separate ones, of course) and each of them had a multi level metal attachment that was the same length as the bottom level but added an additional 3 floors. They loved it!! All of them lived between 5-6 years and I owe that completely to how much space they had for activity! I no longer have hamsters but if I ever were to get another this would be the only way I would do it!

I’ve had hamsters since I was 5 years old and me and my mother loved everyone very much. We had one hamster at a time and when it died we buried it in the yard and had a funeral with flowers and lots of crying. A month after one hamster died we missed it so much to have a hamster that we got a new one. Now we have our 8. hamster and every one lived it’s life to the fullest and as long as possible. The current one is blind and very old but still works out. Hamsters are beautiful and strong willed creatures that deserve the best care possible.

I adopted my mouse from my local shelter. He came in the white critter trail, and they had to tape down the top to keep it closed, the wheel became a hoard for his food because it couldn't move and the water bottle was completely full while the ball at the end was completely dry. The igloo they had in it, couldnt be taken out without deconstruction of the entire thing. Things that shouldnt come out easy just crumbled out, and the thungs that should be easy to take out were perminately stuck. It was very frustrating to clean, and now i use it as an example of what he came in, and what not to use. Now hes in a diy bin cage i got for $10 at Wal-Mart. His entire personality changed in that cage. He loves to dig and rip his tunnels and shove bedding all up into one wall. It is so cute and I couldnt trade it for the world. Just please dont be tempted by critter trails because there are many options that better show the personality of your pet

PETSMART EMPLOYEE HERE👋🏻 I *will* not sell a critter trail or those stupid tiny cages to anyone who buys a hammy. I ALWAYS RECOMMEND a bin cage of 650 sq inches and show them videos on KZread. I tell them how happy they’re hamster will be, how much easier it is to clean, and how much cheaper it is. I hate when my associates try selling people these. Like yeah “what we sell gets us paid” okay but I would rather pets be safe than be paid. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I hate that we sell these. It’s like putting a goldfish in a 1 gallon bowl and calling it good. Why would you do it to a big fuzz ball you want to love you and be healthy? I don’t get why corporate can’t just change guidelines but nope. All about the money. Sucks. It really does. More for the animal than us.

My hamster has a 100cm X 50cm X 50cm cage with two levels. Everytime someone comes over they’re like “why is that cage so big, it’s a small hamster” and I’m like THEY NEED SPACE !! (also, it’s a syrian, not a dwarf, so it’s a bigger hamster) - My cage is half glass (bottom) and half bars (top) plus the breeder wouldn’t give her hamsters away if the cage was any smaller than mine so she knew they would have a good home, which is awesome! (I’m from The Netherlands btw, so I guess what you said about pet care in Europe is true haha)

My brother got a guinea pig and put it in a cage maybe just slightly bigger then the cage you held up in the beginning. Not to mention he let it sit in shit and I ended up cleaning up the poop cause he wasn’t. He was like 16 years old and I was 6-8 years old. So I showed more responsibility then him with his guinea pig. One time he actually got sick because of a prolonged time sleeping next to a cage full of poop. Now I changed out the bedding as often as I could but sometimes he just wouldn’t buy anymore bedding and I wouldn’t have anything. Didn’t help my mom wasn’t willing to sense this animal he brought home without permission... she wanted my brother to show responsibility but I ended up having to cause he was feeding it or watering it or cleaning out the poop..... I was so little I did my best Edit: By the way my brother ended up selling the guinea pig to someone random cause he wanted like a video game.... soo..... I have no idea what happened to the guinea pig but I hope he had a better living condition in his new home..... he was so sweet and would just sit in your lap. Now I’m 15 and I’m proud to say I know a lot more about animals now

My friends nieces had a few hamsters in two cages that were bigger and nicer than that one, but still not ideal. I really wanted to help them understand they needed bigger cages, but with the way those people are, they don’t really care. I do think the girls will give them the best life they need though, and I hope they do learn to get them a better cage.
