Setting Up a Hamster Cage That Doesn't Suck! *shocking*

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Here is me setting up a hamster cage that does not suck! Most cages marketed towards hamsters suck, so I did not use one. However, if you have any suggestions on how I can further improve my cage, please let me know! :D

It's a toy for rabbits, or marketed as such, bur since he loves chasing things around, if you put some treats in he'll go nuts! And sometimes he just likes to chase it just because. My go to toys are Whimzees Chews and grainless treats from JR Farm. If you got access to it, great stuff! There are tons of tutorials on KZread on how to make diy foraging toys. I’m sure you can find some at pet stores, and some bird toys can work too, as long as they’re safe for hamsters.

Your cage looks super nice, I love the bedding colours! The only thing, as a Hamster Owner myself, that bothered me, is the wheel sitting just on the bedding. A lot of Hamsters love the wheel so much, they start digging under it. It is much safer to build a small platform to put the wheel on. In Germany we put stilts on the hides and bigger things in the cage to prevent them from falling over.

I'm so glad that you mentioned how a lot of people put their hamster in too small cages. I think it's mostely because people don't know any better, (just like me a while back!) so these type of video's really help! I personally don't have experience with Syrians but in the Netherlands I often hear that people recommend getting at least a 120x50cm (47x20inch) cage because they otherwise show sterotypical behavior (bar chewing etc). I would recommend getting a winter white, they are soooo cute and are often easy to tame (if bought from a good breader). Also if you have sunflowerseeds they can be bribed to be awake during the day :-P A few tips I would give for your cage are: Add some more stuff to do for your hamster, such as a sandbath. Personally I really like cork tunnels. Also I would recommend creating less open space, so your hamster doesnt get scared (they are prey animals after all). You can do this by adding more hideouts, adding a platform, adding sprays (flax is a favorite here, and it looks so nice) and putting the stuff away from the walls of the cage so your hamster can hide behind things. You could also add a water dish as it creates a more natural drinking pose for the hamster. If you like natural enclosures you could look into hamsterscaping, which is like aquascaping but for hamsters. For example this is a cage I made following the Dutch 'guidelines' for hamsterscaping: ibb.co/qNqr3Hn. Sorry for the wall of text, i got a bit carried away :-P

I have had lots of hamsters throughout the years. I found the best way to keep them happy is to change the layout of the cage every week to keep things exciting. I brought some tooth treasure chests off of amazon and I would put vegetables and two mealworms in those chests and hide them under the bedding and around the cage. This encourages them to forage and my hamster loved finding his food. At some point he started to hide the chests from me as well 😂. It's a great way to keep them busy. I would also make my own seed mix for my hamsters. You can find lists of seeds for them online. I've been doing this for my hamster for years and I had two hamsters that have lived up to 4-5 years doing this, so I would say it works.

Love it, it's a solid start. I'd recommend some more tubes etc around the cage, as a lot of hamsters don't like wide open spaces. And also a sandbath, even if the hamster doesn't seem to enjoy bathing in it too much, they usually train themselves to use it like a litter tray 😂

She likes to dig and use it as a litter box too, so that's convenient. I also have a portion of her tank that is aspen and she likes that a little less than the care fresh, but she does like the variety so I find her tunneling in it pretty often.

Try adding things herbs and various sprays such as oat and millet. Also, it is probably best to get a lid for your cage because hamsters are great escape artists especially with that tall bedding and the hides to climb on. Water bottle tip! You can glue/velcro the bottle to a magnetic fish tank cleaner! Especially great for gerbils as you can move the bottle to anywhere in the tank to stop them burying it 😊

My absolute BIGGEST reccomendations for ANY hamster owner is: • Join a hamster forum (I like Hamster Hideout) • Watch, watch, watch the frick out of KZread (ErinsAnimals, VictoriaRaechel, HoppingHammy, and HammyLux are the biggest) • Don't be afraid of diy! Some of my dwarfs favorite toys are diy! ErinsAnimals and Victoria Raechel are probably the best for diy toys. • You can get hamster supplies from practically anywhere in the pet store, so don't be shy to check other animal products out. Reptile cork logs, bird millet, Whimzees dog chews, and RepiSand for sand baths are just a few examples. Thank you so much for doing your reaserch, and good luck with your future ham!

you should move the bendy bridge forward so it's more like a covered walk way. there's a lot of open space in the front of your cage and your hamster might feel very exposed without anything to hide under. you could also get a cork log to serve the same purpose (and also give the hamster something to climb on) I'd also recommend getting a small hide to put in the corner by the water bottle. some hamsters like building nests under/near their water and having variety in where hides are placed is always good also from personal experience, the carolina storm doesn't work with every dwarf hamster :P mine had a bit of trouble getting traction since they're so smooth

i would definitely suggest more toys and enrichment like a sand bath! i'd check out victoria raechel's videos. one thing i will say is that i've kept both a syrian and a russian campbell's dwarf in my 40 gallon breeder and i suggest to be prepared to upgrade if the hamster is younger. my syrian i got from petco and i ended up making a diy cage that was about 1000 sq inches because although he wasn't bored or stressed in the 40 gallon, i didn't feel like i was giving him enough variety and enrichment in that space, especially with having super deep bedding. with my dwarf, she does fantastic in this cage, but i would rather her be in something bigger for the same reason. the only reason i don't upgrade her is that i'm her 3rd owner and this is at least her 5th enclosure and i'm trying to minimize stress. hope this helps!! good luck on getting your hamster!

I made my hamsters bin cage, ask Maddie, she'll show you! but I did not use carefresh as main bedding but as a bed bedding in his few hiding spots. I use aspen as main bedding. In my case I kinda have to. Hamsuke (if anyone knows where it is from ILY) is a long hair, and plus the smell went down as soon as I did it. I am too trying to figure out more stuff to add for him!! Awesome cage. If your hamster starts knocking down the wheel you can flipping it upside down and zip tie the pedestal/legs to the the screen lid. That will also free up floor space. I'll be including that technique in my hamster video that I'll be putting out soon

I would strongly recommend a larger cage or a cage attachment, especially if you get a Syrian. My Syrian used to show signs of stress even in his huge 75 gallon tank. While your cage is above the minimum I believe the proper minimum should be more around 650-1000 square inches

Creature Corner I managed to attach 2 40 gallon turtle tanks together (half of one of the side of the tanks is completely open so I just put a guinea pig bridge over the two to connect them) so now my Syrian has 6 feet instead and she’s really been liking the space. I had her in a single 40 gal to begin, then an ikea detolf but it was pissing me off cuz I had a 12 inch silent spinner wheel in it and the lid was annoying so I got another tank and it has literally been one of the best decisions ever lol

Hey I have 3 different hamsters and they’re each in their own Individual 40 gallon breeders. I used to use command strips for the water bottles too but I got tired of the struggles to reattach the bottle (or maybe I’m just weak lol) so I switched to bowls! I LOVE IT AND SO DO THE HAMMIES! It’s a more natural way of drinking and since you would be using a small dish as the bowl you would be changing the water more often offering them fresher and cleaner water! :)

  • @jadec.2481
    @jadec.24815 жыл бұрын

Personal preference but you should switch to a water bowl because it is more natural and will incline you to clean and refill it everyday as both options will build up bacteria if they aren't cleaned. Other than that, great job on setting up their cage! Can't wait to see the little guy!!!

Do you have a special way that will keep the water from spilling over or getting filled with bedding? I have 10 hamsters and 12 gerbils (kinda obsessed w rodents) and I’ve been interested in water bowls but almost all of my babies are super messy and I feel like their bedding would get in the bowls instantly after putting them in :(

Seed sprays, I love how they look scattered the cage. And a sand bath, you can use reptisand, the non calcium one. Maybe make a small popsicle platform? A loofah chew just to add another texture to chew on.

You could get tubes going out the cage and have a smaller one for sand bath or something (I saw you hearted a comment talking about sand bath) unless you wanted to just do a little container in a corner

I love the cage! From my experience my hamster likes her cage better the more toys and full the cage is so I would definitely get some more toys not just chew toys so it’s a good idea to get more toys like you said. I would also lower the bedding a little bit on the lower side just to make sure the wheel is sitting completely comfortable in the cage. I have a screen top too but my hamster still tries to find ways to climb out when the bedding is super high like that so lowering it on one side will help that.
