My 6th grade science teacher had two heating lamps on a very small cage for a ball python. Plus he never clean the enclosures until his class room started to reek of feces. I wanted to say something but what was going to be done. He was the lazy old teacher who never taught and showed you videos about science so I didn’t think he’d actually do anything about it. At least he got fired after two years after he assaulted a kid on bus.

And I didn't want it but the teacher wouldn't let me give it back. Lol but it was neat at the end, to let the butterfly fly away once they were ready to. I have mine in a 8x6 feet enclosure and she kept the rabbit in one of those tiny wire cages. We went and told the principal about that and she was either gonna get fired, had to take proper care of the rabbit, or give it away to a shelter(She has a little baby Rex rabbit, but it would grow huge). She bought a larger cage but she seemed more grumpy, but she says nothing about it. I haven’t seen her in like 2 years, but I hope that the rabbit is okay.

YES. Thank you for making this!!!! I teach elementary school and keep reptiles/dogs. 4 of my 6 reptiles are rescues from other classes in my school. My class works hard to make appropriate enclosures for the animals. Most recently we took on green anoles, several of whom died because other classes had mistreated them so much before I took them (dehydration was the main issue). In addition to class pets, animals that classes study for short periods of time and then discard are treated so poorly. I made my school stop purchasing animals for those units. Teachers HAVE to do better to teach responsible and respectful animal care!

I just had the most horrifying conversation with my mom and sister, apparently they think that spending more than fifty dollars is excessive. And as a consequence, we kept our red eared slider in a terrarium about 1 gal, with only water and a little platform.....and they refuse to listen to me when I say that's bad, and then my mom goes and says "Well I'm the one taking care of it-" like seriously, if you bought a proper tank I'd help too because the turtle would be so much happier and I'd be more inclined to spend more time with it instead of looking away because it's sad! Also my sister plans on getting a bunch of chickens for the sole purpose of taxidermy to play with them like dolls. Do not let these people near animals!

PrincessCrystalWriter I’m into taxidermy but that is just plain sick I prefer that a animal die in a natural way than killing it for that purpose. I collected (and still doing it) bones that belong to my dog who died in a mysterious way three years ago home so I can reconstruct her, and whatever flesh or fur is still there I hurried it in our little pet cemetery. Now I have her bones framed with painted lilies in the background, a led candle to light the place. I’ll be putting artificial flowers later when I have money.

My school had guinea pigs. They were so neglected and the children used to handle them horribly. I offered to take care of them and I did. Although i couldn't give them a better cage at the time, I still stepped in and handled them gently and cleaned then out. The adults never supervised the children while they were playing with them and I always put the guinea pigs before anything else. I was also soon put in charge of a tortoise however the tortoise was in good care and had an owner. Soon someone was allergic to the guinea pigs so they could no longer keep them. I then found out that I would be keeping the them! They now live a very cheerful happy life in a large hutch and they are so tame and thankful x

When I was in grade school, I had a teacher that kept a pair of budgies in the classroom. They were delightfully tame, and had regular medical care from an avian vet. The teacher took them home with her every day after school and over the weekends. During the day, students got to take turns cleaning their cage and refilling the food and water dishes. The budgies regularly got time out of their cage during the day to sit on students' fingers or shoulders when the class was occupied with something quiet, like reading or completing worksheets. They had plenty of toys, too. To my recollection, the only negative was that they were on a seed diet, but this was 15 years ago. I don't know if people were very aware of the problems with seeds back then. Even so, I think she did a pretty good job with those birds.

In second grade we had two guinea pigs as class pets. They were really our teachers own pet guinea pigs that she was allowed to bring to school with her. They were housed in a large wooden box enclosure and were very well kept. Every day one student was assigned to fill their water bottle in the morning and give them each a treat. I think once a week if we were well behaved the guinea pigs were allowed out and all the students would sit in a circle and if they came up to you, you could pet them. Our teacher brought them to school everyday and took them home every night, Mrs. Heath you were the real MVP of animal care.

Guinea pigs should be in groups of two or more (three or more is best) and they get depressed without a friend. Even if you handle the piggie a lot. guinea pigs need a minimum of 4 by 4 meters squared, and a very big run. (In my opinion that is the minimum for one to two, but guinea is recommended sizes range. I would say bigger than that!) I have seventeen piggies, (all deserved so males and females are together, I have four males and they get along well) They have a whole shed. And an outside run of 8 by 10meters so they can go at grass.

The beetle is pretty easy to care for, while the fish tank takes a lot of work (I stay back some nights maintaining it.) The children love both and I involve them in maintaining both habitats. They love helping with water changes and then using the old water to water the garden. It’s wonderful to see the children caring for their pets and in turn using the waste the animals make to care for their garden.

As a high school teacher myself, seeing class pets breaks my heart. Its a shame that people who should promote knowledge and research aren't doing it themselves. I own a handful of exotic pets including 4 parrots and I am glad to see the parakeet in this video seems to have a good setup! However, I don't suggest anyone choose a bird as a class pet. Even more quiet birds like parakeets and finches make enough noise to really distract students who have ADD, ADHD, Autism, ect. If I were to choose a class pet I think tarantulas are perfect. Many species don't need special light or heating (which I fear would mess up while no one is around on the weekends) and the setup they require wont take up a lot of shelf space. That or a Betta since a 10 gallon tank also doesn't take up much space and regulating the heat and light even in a planted tank is much more forgiving than the heat reptiles need. Both of these animals also don't make much noise which is great for students who need a more quiet space. Anyways.. Im glad you touched on this, thanks Tyler! I hope other teachers see it too!

In fall 2003 one of my friends rescued a guinea pig from a school she was in with a child she was supporting, and gave her to me. The cage was too small and the base was too shallow. There were no hides and no hay. The food bowl was a bird one, so it had the thing on the bottom to screw it into a holder, but no holder. The food was “small animal” pellets with no added Vitamin C. Most telling was that she made no noises for an entire month after I brought her home. Including when I took her to the vet for a checkup and a thermometer got stuck up her butt. She was just that traumatized. Her wheeks were always quiet and airy. I got her a friend after about a month, and she did really well after that. She passed away suddenly in early 2007.

I think class pets can work- but it depends on the ages/the teacher's dedication to said pet. I don't think sending them home with just one of the kids for the summer is the best idea either. But it can work, and it can start kids from non-pet households to be able to understand the work that comes into having a pet, and the dedication it involves. Sadly, that really isn't usually the case...

I remember having a class hamster in grade 2. I don’t remember much, but I remember it lived in a TINY critter trail cage, and somehow got a big cut on its back (probably from the children). I had no idea this was bad because I was in grade 2, but looking back, i feel so bad for that hamster.

Our class pet in 6th grade REALLY made me mad. I had done a ton of research on guinea pigs over the summer because, I mean, guinea pigs! Our class pet was a lone guinea pig in a tiny, tiny cage. I had wanted to take him home for a while, but I never got to. I had (and have) an amazing set up, and I wanted to give him the good life. My birthday was the day of the raffle (and StuCo elections, but that’s a story for another day), and I didn’t get him. I begged the girl who got him (she had kept him over fall break) and she said, “No, you have your own,” which was a fair point, but that was still rude.

In year 1 we had two pet rabbits and our teachers took care for them a lot. They both lived together outside in a large enclousure and every afternoon we let them run round the classroom for 30 minutes. There names were salt and pepper.

We never had a class pet, but in preschool we incubated some chicken eggs and hatched them and when they were a few days old they went back to the family who donated the eggs. It was a fun learning experience, watching the hatching! And the enclosure for the chicks was lovely.

I got two guinea pigs for FREE from a teacher using them as class pets. Their nails were so long they couldn’t walk, they stunk, and they looked lifeless. She said the children were even squeezing them. I gave them a bath with baby shampoo and an zinc shampoo (dandruff shampoo) for any type of skin fungus they could have caught, trimmed their nails, gave them vitamin C, and handled them a good variety of leafy greens. Saddening how there are so many people in one classroom yet no one cares enough to do a bit of research or has no knowledge on an animal. Now I have had them for around a month and they are brand new. They love me and love their chin rubs most of all!

I’ve seen some class pets in small enclosures. I have a leopard gecko, and in fifth grade, I brought my own pet to be our class pet. Since he was my own baby, I took care of him and helped my friends care for him. He is still here today and he loves you all.

My science teacher got a class pet bearded dragon. He took care of that bearded dragon so so well! He researched exactly how to take care of it and knew how to handle it and everything. He also bought a cute little leash for it. He only trusted a few of the gentlest students to hold it, and you had to earn that. I was the first ever to hold him because I was obsessed with him the moment I saw him, I fed him, cleaned his container sometimes, and talked to him. My science teacher took the bearded dragon every day and sometimes didn’t bring him in because he knew it was too cold. He took the best care of it.

Loving this video Tyler. :) As someone who has a degree and lectures now, the most important thing you need to remember is that you never stop learning and the research is always changing and evolving. Closing yourself off from new information without even looking into it further or hearing a person out, just because it comes from someone who is less traditionally educated, is a surefire way to go backwards in best practice and miss out on some really important things you could've learned.
