What makes me upset is the fact that many children do research on how to properly care for a pet. But their parents aren't willing to pay for that extra thing that the pet needs. My yound bearded dragon was kept in a 5gal tank for a year when I first got him. I had begged my parents to get me a bigger tank because the 5gal was as long as his body was. I was finally able to convince them to get me a 50gal aquarium tank and the Beardie is so much more active and he's able to have both cool and warm spots in the tank

I have that problem with my two budgies, altough their cage should be big enough to somehow be acceptable, they don't like flying around out of the cage, I don't know why. Therefore I want to convince them to get a bigger cage so they can at least fly around in there when they don't want to come out. Problem is that these cages are really expensive and my parents didn't expect budgies to cost so much. I'm saving money rn tho to buy them a ton of new things, including a huge cage and toys, to make them happier. They live pretty ok rn I think, but I'll be able to give them a way better life when I get a job or move out and can provide for them myself

I agree, my turtle was growing and i begged my mom to get me at least a 20 gallon tank since he was barely a year old . She kept refusing saying that she wasn’t going to let me have a big tank in my room, upstairs. And she wasn’t going to have it downstairs even if I was going to pay for his expenses. Eventually I convinced my mom to build a pond outside for him. Adults don’t have consideration for animals happiness. As long as they are fine and are making their child happy, it doesn’t matter if they are happy or not

@@sheepthesheep4425 I think one thing that shocks people about birds is the vet costs. I mean just an annual check up is looking at £200-£400. (depends on the avian veterinary practice costs. Mines the higher end) That's how it is for me anyway and I have 3 cockatiels. I have one avian vet 30mins away and another 1 hour away. 1 hour one is more expensive but does surgery if necessary and has an in house lab for faster results. Nothing else for at least 4 hours. If they get sick it's a nightmare on cost. A couple years back one of my birds got sick. Their symptoms were minor, just a bit of gasping here and there. I wasn't seeing an avian vet at the time and kept being given basic antibiotic for a respiratory infection. Cat and dog vets didn't think anything was wrong with him since he was active, singing, preening and eating. Had full testing done at an avian as I was sure something was wrong. X-rays showed aspergillosis (fungal lesions all over the airways). Even the avian vets were surprised how extensive it was considering his outward condition. Testing for all birds (to make sure other 2 were fine) and medication was over 1k. But he was worth it. After a couple months of treatment, he recovered. The only reason I can think of why he got sick was that he'd stick to my mother wherever she went, including the kitchen where she had seedlings growing. So it could have been a higher concentration of fungal spores in the air near those, from the soil. Made sure he never went in the kitchen again along with not growing in there again, just in case. The other two never went in the kitchen and weren't sick. So yeah, It's costly but I get those check-ups done each year now in case something serious is ever hiding. He may have had that minor symptom but it could have easily been overlooked(like with the cat and dog vets) or there could be no symptom at all until death.

I once went with a friend to visit some of his friends. Their son had a bearded dragon and wanted me to see it(my friend had told them I had had a couple of them). Everything looked perfect, and it had everything it needed, but it was way to small and scrawny for its age. Turned out they almost only fed it mealworms, because thats what the petstore had told them to do. They were so sad to find out that the poor thing was malnourished. I got them to read a couple of books, and the little guy ended up being a happy well fed lizard :)

i feel like the parents play such a big part in pet-keeping when you're a minor. my mom wanted rabbits again, as we'd had them when I was younger, but I was the only one who put in the effort and time to research, and that resulted in many fights and debates of "whose fault it is" when the rabbits have any bad symptoms. it was my fault, of course, as the kid who can't go out to the store alone to buy them food, or as the kid who can't go out to buy toys, the kid who can't buy toys or hides and has to resort to making them cardboard ones out of leftover boxes. the kid who has to fight that the rabbits can't be left outside or in a hutch. i finally decided to rehome them after a year and i'm sad about it, but glad they don't suffer anymore.

My bird needs to learn proper human care. He finds it okay to eat me. He's actually eating me as I type this.

I work at a pet store, and I am constantly trying to tell people on what's best to give their small animals, which I know best, and the main issues are that customers either will listen to my advice but will say is too expensive, and end up buying bad care out of impulsiveness or they will think they're absolutely right in their idea of care because "I've always seen a cage like this for x pet" or "well I kept x pet like this when I was a kid." It's extremely aggravating and then they come back soon later complaining that their hamster/small animal has gotten aggressive.

Ariana R-H. the manager at my old pet store started refusing sales for reptiles and some small animals without minimum requirements at least. the dfw reptarium also requires proof of proper setup before they sell their animals and it makes me so happy to see some stores pushing for proper care.

uh yup i have that happen everyday especially for fish people think im crazy when i tell them they cant put 5 or more fish in a 5 gallon. I had a guy today buy 3 guppy's and 3 glofish for his 4 gallon even after me and another employee tried to explain and unfortunately I cant deny them cause there "just fish". :(

That pretty much describes every single pet I’ve owned. My Parrot and Rabbit were roaming all around the house. Rabbit only used his cage as a litter box and was never kept in . The bird would only go (by himself) in the cage to go to sleep. Both were fed fresh food and high quality species appropriate food . My betta is kept in a 45 gallon tank with filtration , heater , and real plants . I do weekly water changes , change the filter when needed and clean the substrate .My other fish and electric blue crawfish are also cared for . My iguana had a very nice large terrarium and was fed fresh vegetables and insects . And no need to say about my dogs they were spoiled rotten well all my pets are . I simply just survive .

I use to work in Petco, and I use to breed betta (had a serious infection come in from some imported and it some how spread to all of my betta even though ever tank had their own tools and the Hep infected fish werent even in the same room 😰. I was devastated and just cant bring myself to start again) I was changing water at the fish section of our 100+ betta cups and a lady walks by asking why I was changing their water. I told her that ammonia builds up and will burn their scales and gills. She starts screaming at the top of her lungs "who would do that to the fish?! Why would they put ammonia in the water! I hope you caught them so they cant do it again!" Ummm ma'am, the fish puts the ammonia in the water... with their poop....

I hate hermit crabs worst pet I’ve ever owned

So basically the most popular girl in my whole grade posted a picture on her Snapchat of her new betta fish. He was kept in a tiny bowl with no filter heater or anything other then a few pebbles and a decoration that took up half the bowl. I have to admit, I’m a bit afraid of her and I really dislike her, but I replied to it and gave her some tips on a very nice way. She actually replied and seemed cool with advice. I’m not sure if she changed anything but I hope so!

I’m in college, so it is VERY popular for people I know to keep Bettas in their dorm rooms. I post updates on my Betta often so the people I have on Snapchat can learn how to properly care for their Bettas. I’ve actually personally talked with tons of college students about fish care and helped these little guys live better lives in college dorms. So many people have told me that they feel like they have been a terrible fish parent, and the biggest point I try to make is “you’re getting the information you need to better his life, that’s not being a terrible fish parent, that’s being an educated fish parent”

I was talking to my sister in-law about my plans to get more fish and told her about the tank setup I already have (29L) and she was telling me to just get a betta because you can keep them in a small bowl, and when I told her nicely that I didn’t feel right about that because they do actually like to swim around and should at least have 10L (2.5 gallons = 9.5L) to do so, she became distant towards me, and then started making snide remarks about anything to do with me, I suppose because her pride was hurt (she is a vet nurse, which I guess because she is she thinks she knows best and can’t take criticism when it comes to animals). She has kept a couple of betta’s, both in tiny bowls. When I got my first betta I was going to keep him in a tiny bowl because of her, but as I did more research on the care of betta’s, I found out the above and went for a 9L tank, which although slightly small, had all the betta needed and was way better than a bowl. My last betta only lasted a few months, but I think that’s because I overfed him as well. I know better now. You live and learn. Do I feel bad for my betta, yes, but what can I do now? I can do better for my next betta, which I will this time around. At least I’m not letting my pride stop me from caring for my animals like I should.

My Betta lives in a 5.5 gallon with a filter and a heater. He seems so happy and active.

Well a Betta needs minimum 2,5 gallons so he/she should legally be happy

AND the animal should be able to run in a wheel without its back bending/curving at all! Make sure it’s actually big enough!

One time I was at a pet store and they had these giant fluffy hamsters I've never seen before. AND THEIR WHEELS WERE SO FUCKING TINY! One of them got on the wheel because either he was damn insane or out of desperation/boredom, and when running on it he was shaped like A BANANA!!! I cringed at the sight and I still hate myself for not talking about it.

I’m a former pet store employee and this just brought back all the frustrating memories of explaining proper care to customers and them just disregarding it. The mentality with most people is that “well I’ve seen goldfish kept in bowls all the time. It’s okay”. It was extremely frustrating when I couldn’t get through to people. I definitely refused sale of animals to people many times. Also, I live in NC and it’s been illegal to sell turtles in this state until very recently. I went to the pet store I used to work at the other day and my former coworker said they were selling turtles now and it made me SO SAD. I actually loved the fact that it was illegal to sell turtles in NC because I know how highly neglected they are. Now I’m really sad and angry that they legalized it.

I'm in NC too and didn't know the law had changed. I thought it was always legal to sell turtles as long as they were at least four inches so that "kids couldn't put them in their mouths". Either way, it's sad.

It's a pet peeve of mine when I see people assume the care of a certain animal. It's so sad, and annoying. Everyday I see people buying animals without doing research what so ever, and the animal is just in a horrible environment. I saw a dad, and their kids buying hamsters, and they were looking at the kritter trails, I wanted to say something, but it wasn't my business to tell them what to get and what not to get. There are multiple occasions where I see petstore employees give out wrong information. Again, I want to say something, but it's not my business. People should just do their research, and once they have the animal for a while, they will regret getting it, and give it away.

People want “tiny cute” “office tanks” instead of the necessary 5-10 gallons for a Betta. Can’t tell you how many sales I’ve refused. Call corporate, I beg of you.

Makes me sadly remember my 9th birthday....My dad bought me a baby red-eared slider as a surprise. And guess what? The lil dude died before I came back the week after(my parents are separated, so I only lived there every other week). The horrible pet store my dad went to sold him one of those freakishly small peanut shaped plastic tub with a fake island. It wasn't even a proper aquarium for a baby turtle wtf...like he couldn't even swim in it. Oh and they also sold him dried shrimps and told him it was all it needed :') That pet shop was the worst(My dad was also at fault of course, it wasnt even the last time he bought an animal there...and everytime he didn't even research beforehand).

“I had a goldfish in a bowl for 5 years and he was happy!” Ma’am, goldfish can live 20+ years with proper care. Hardest part of working in a pet store was dealing with customers who think they are correct POLITELY. Gosh I felt like smacking some sense in to people ever other day.

Seriously I work at a kind of dollar store who also sells pet supplies and we sell "rodent food", there are rabbits, hamsters, rats and gerbils on the bin and at least that is a _major_ red flag. Every time someone is asking about this and my coworkers aren't around I tell them to _not_ get this food. _NEVER EVER_ We also sell "rodent sticks" which are grain sticks with honey which is another really bad thing. I hate people who know what stuff is wrong and do it anyways from the bottom of my heart. The people who do stuff because they dont know better are nearly as bad, but I'm willing to educate anyone who is interested and wants to make changes in their behaviour

Julie Julie oh lol I live in Texas so it never gets cold really lol but what we do so they don’t get eaten by the big fish is we have a 5 gallon tank,we take 5 feeder fish at a time,keep them there for 1-2 months so they can get big enough not to be eaten,then transfer them to the pond (there is only 7 in there bc my great grandfather left the water flowing and um killed all the fish so we had to start over and it was devastating but we didn’t do it on purpose)

I got a chinchilla from someone when I was a teenager. They told me they didnt have the time to take care of her, and knew that I always kept lots of pets. I've always loved animals, and had a lot of small pets as a teen. I was horrified when I got her, because they were keeping her in a flipping raccoon trap. The poor thing was around 6 years old, and lived its whole life in that thing with little to no attention. DO NOT GET ANIMALS YOU CAN'T TAKE CARE OF!

I work in a pet store. The problem with telling people about proper care about the animals is that they get offended and then complain to managers and corporate. People want to put angelfish in bowls and koi in 10 gallon tanks. If you tell people about the proper space needed for a hamster or fish, they get upset and harass you for not telling them it's okay to put a hamster in a small critter tail and a betta in a simple vase. Plus, they don't want to pay more than $20-30 for a rodent container, so they won't do the big critter tail or a 40 breeder tank. To make things worse, we don't sell cheap correctly sized rodent containers. People also get small fish tanks because of the photoshopped pictures and because we sell them so they think it's okay to keep fish in them. They literally want desk decorations. You can never advise a customer to do their own research or go somewhere else to buy a good sized tank or container. People come into the store wanting to buy an animal they literally know nothing about. They get shocked when you tell them to keep a fish in a larger tank. They reason that because they've kept an angelfish in a bowl without a heater or filter before, then they can do it again and it's fine. People are so dense.

Legit most people mindset for fish, or at least those beginners or naive people, are that they have a life span of 1 year. So when they do keep an angel fish in a 5 or 10 gallon, if the angel fish dies after a year, they see it as the fish lived a "good life"

Oh God yes! It upsets me that petstores sell those sorts of containers at all! But as you said, those Photoshop pics on the packaging makes it seem ok. It's not! The goldfish in bowls upset me the most. I have one goldfish and one Raphael catfish in a 55 gal tank. Keeping them in a bowl, or dear God a betta in a vase, is abusive!

When I was a young teen my dad surprised me and my sister with parakeets. Unfortunately, they were severely neglected. It was a horrible combination of me being too young and irresponsible to be a primary caretaker, the bird being completely untamed, and none of us knowing any better. His caging wasn't too tiny, but there weren't enough toys, attention, or cage maintenance to be even close to acceptable. Looking back, I'm sick over that poor bird's life. I had to really take some time to forgive myself for what happened when my husband became very interested in adopting a parrot. I did a LOT of research and I made a personal commitment to put in the time to do right by our animals.

I feel you, it happened to me when I was 3 to 7 years old, with hamsters first and a fetter later on. Now I’m living with two adopted guinea pigs who live in a 170x70cm enclosure, two adopted pet rats and a rescued hamster. I’m trying to spread correct information now 🙈

Honestly similar situation here, but I had rats. I was around 11. The pet store information I was given was pretty bad, and although the cage was pretty big there was no enrichment at all really :(( Doing tonnes of research for my rats this time around has come with an awful realisation of all the mistakes I made. My rats this time have a huge cage (over twice the size of what's needed) and I am constantly learning about their care so they have the best life possible, they are extra spoiled partly because of the guilt over my first rats.

I am a teen, but, we were told that the cage I got for him was good. My parents didn’t want to spend more than £100 on his cage. 😢 However, I did a lot of tease her in the actual cage and put a lot of trust into the shop on the right cage, and supplies. To make it up to him, I let him out if his cage from 6am-9pm. He has over 15 toys for his cage, which I rotate, and the second I move out, or if I get permission form my parents, I will buy him a HUGE cage. I have began saving up, at the moment, I have over £550 saved up in birthday money, Christmas money and ‘sorry you got cancer’ money, that I am putting that towards a huge cage. He is out all of the time and I am with him 80% of the day, as I am only in school part time. I am always buying him new toys and playing with him constant,y. I like to make fruit salads and vegetable salads which I pour a bowl out, eat a piece and feed some to my little Alex, and we eat it together whilst I pet him. I hope I can provide him the best possible care.

thank you so much for this. I had a small crisis the other day when it occurred to me that the budgies my childhood friend kept were severely neglected, and I have no idea if she still has one or both of those birds to this day. I couldnt get in contact with her, and I was practically in tears because I knew she didnt know better and that bird had been miserable for years, so I just... donated money to an exotic bird rescue. I couldn't think of anything else to appease my sense of guilt for not knowing better and not being able to reach out now. I searched up the nearest rescue and just threw money at it.

I’m glad you got on the topic of birds, my bird cages take up 1/4 of my room but you got to do what’s best for them.

I have 2 Budgies. I had Ocean for about 1 year and I tried everything to get Ocean to be active and happy. Before christmas my friends bought Neptune (an abandoned 8 month old Budgie with a birth defect in the wing that already was named Neptune) now those 2 run around and flap around their cage. Neptune can't fly so its hard to take care of it at times. I want to get a bigger cage because I want to add more toys to the already big cage XD

The majority of neglected animals are the ones that are sold in pet stores and are easy to get ahold of.

The real Hanna Banana It doesn’t help that most advice pet stores get is either outdated or completely false. Some pet stores are okay but places like Petco and Petsmart give a lot of false advice.

Rabbits are so underrated :( The best way to keep rthem imo is having them inside the house. Theyre save from weather and its always important to notice very fast when health issues come up... I keep mine in a part of my room I divided off with a puppy fence just like you and most of the time they can freely roam my whole room anyway :) Its the cutest thing when they wake you up in the morning while they binky on your bed.

ArminMin yes!! Rabbits are the cutest little things!! I have a neutered male rabbit named chichi, who has a 5 by 5 pen, a hidey house, water BOWL, proper pellets and greens, lots of toys, unlimited hay, and more!! He’s a spoiled little bun, as it should be.

I got my rabbit when I was younger and originally he was supposed to live in my room and then he matured and smelt really bad even if I cleaned the cage (he was a baby and was living in a dog crate but was allowed to roam the room throughout the day) my mom made me put him outside even though I told her it would get better if we fixed him and she said “it was a waste of money it won’t change anything” I even saved my money to do it and she told me no. I have another rabbit that I wanted to bond him with but my mom still won’t let me fix the for the same reason. The second one doesn’t smell bad at all he stays in my room. At least the outside one has a 6x4 2 story cage and a smaller one in the shed for winter and he gets frozen water bottles in summer and comes in if its too hot. She also does understand how to feed them and will buy me whole bales of hay for them.

@@Lili-iz3hz you should make your mom watch videos about rabbit care.the way I see it is if you're unwilling to get your pet fixed/provide best home and food possible then you shouldnt get it. It's a shame your mom wont let you get it fixed. 100% the issue would be fixed. I rescued my rabbit and he would spray pee everywhere and was aggressive/territorial. After getting him fixed he was no longer peeing everywhere or even smelly at all, on top of that all aggression etc. Was gone. He loves hopping on my bed and running around my room, can never get enough pets and kisses! Rabbits are very clean and constantly grooming if u get them fixed and provide a litter box. I hope that poor bunny gets help it's not good for it to be alone outside all the time. They're very social

ALWAYS DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH ON TOP OF ASKING PET STORE EMPLOYEES QUESTIONS!!! Thank you Tyler!! As someone who works at a pet store, I wanted to say that a vast majority of big branded pet stores don't seem to have the best standards in terms of the bare minimum. Of course there are MANY exceptions such as the size of a store and its owner, but the standards are definitely still lacking (in my opinion) in things like variety of enclosure sizes, substrates, healthy foods and treat, and even overall staff knowledge, treatment, and store cleanliness for its workers and animals. It is very hard (and can be overwhelming, especially for new employees) to learn about such a vast amount of animals, and species-specific care, products and what they do, and just impulsive or knowledge-ignorant people, to take on all at once and give the CORRECT INFORMATION, as a lot of this knowledge comes from the hands-on experience of keeping an animal, and can have a learning process of potentially years. I personally don't give information that I am not confident in, but that is not the case for everyone. I have heard many horror stories of employees giving wrong temperatures and humidity for herptiles and fish... My point being that if you want an animal, you should do MAJOR research on it, as you are becoming responsible for another LIFE FORM. Don't just go off of the knowledge of JUST a pet store employee, or JUST the first result on google, because results could potentially be slightly different than what an animal will simply SURVIVE with, and TRULY THRIVE with, and you should care about that! If you get bored of researching a specific animal within a week, maybe consider that the animal possibly isn't for you, as if you got bored of researching that fast, it is very possible that you will get bored of the animal once in your care, and therefore spend less and less time with it, even resulting in neglect. I am disappointed in the selection and variety of small animal enclosures (with 1/2 inch bar spacing) and bird (especially parrot) enclosures, as a lot of them are so so small... yet people still buy them, which just screams impulse or lack of knowledge to me. If you are getting a pet, you should be extremely excited and committed to it, and therefore want the best possible enclosure space, food, and comfort items for your animal As a Pet Store employee, I understand that it s my responsibility to be knowledgeable about the animals that the store sells, but understand that in the amount of time we are trained, and the pace of it all and amount learned (a lot of information in a small amount of time), can make it very difficult to retain, and very stressful, as if you give the wrong information you are putting animals at risk. (and odds are if you work at a pet store, you love animals, so that is the last thing you want to do) LONG STORY SHORT, DO A LOT OF RESEARCH AND TAKE CARE TO INSURE THE HEALTH, SAFETY AND HAPPINESS OF YOUR CREATURES, AND DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR ABOUT THE CARE OF A SPECIFIC ANIMAL. Ultra_Violet77847 when getting my snake I made like 10 playlists watched LOTS of videos on snakes and royal pythons did at least 100 google searches and got a 1 foot long snek a 3 foot tank with exoterra corck exoterra waterfall fake plant and the perfect and best yet substrate lowest temperature her tank was ever at was 73 faren hight its always at least 80+ faren hight now she loves digging and climbing so she has twigs and hanging corck and nice substrate she can dig in and she sometimes makes dirt piles and mini tunnels.

Yes very sad!! My bunny walks around the house with me. Usually likes to follow me everywhere. If people actually thought about it. Bunnies in general run all over. How could they think of confining them in a cage

dark force hi yes thank you for mentioning this I recently rescued a senior rabbit who was in terrible conditions- she lived in a tiny store cage for the majority of her life and she was fed grass and occasionally water.she didn’t even have the simplest thing such as shavings to sleep on just the plastic floor of the cage.I haven’t introduced her to my other rabbit yet as she is still a bit nervous and not quite settled but yes it is very important for rabbits to be together thank you for highlighting that !

@@darkforce3501 I agree with you. I gave you a thumbs up actually. However, some buns don't bond well & actually bond with their owner. In that case Lauren you need to realize this & you have to be around him ALOT! You are your bunny's bond mate then & they are social animals. My sweet boy was this way & I took care of him till he was old & arthritic. I have a job where I could have been around him often (in his room). But I just recently adopted another bunny. Btw, my sweetest boy passed a year ago - wasn't even sure I was ready - but I did it for the sake of buns who are so misunderstood. With this 2nd bunny I will bond him (hopefully). As soon as he settles in and we get adjusted to one another

4 years ago when I was around 8 years old we went to a carnival and without any knowledge we won 3 small goldfish. As soon as we got the fish we bought a 10 gallon starter kit and unfortunately one of the fish died after about a year. They have been in that 10 gallon until now and the reason we never got a bigger tank is because none of us were educated about fish and they didn’t grow that big either maybe around 4 inches. I recently learned more information and I told my parents if we can get a bigger tank. We are not able to care for and provide such a big tank since we live in an apartment but we at least upgraded to a 20 gallon tank. Both of the fish are still pretty healthy and even tho I can’t provide them with a big enough tank they seem pretty happy and love to eat, I love them so much. So before getting any pet make sure you do your research and are prepared with everything you need. Thanks!!!

I just watched this video and was about to comment this! Most rats are neglected! I have a huge cage for my 3 girls bigger than most people would give to them! I did have 6 at one time! My rats take up 75% of my room because off all the stuff I have for them because it's stuff they need! I get called crazy all the time for how I care for them! I would love to see him do a video on all the other mistreated animals! I have owned about every single small pet in my 22 years of living and we took awesome care of all of them! I follow so many rat groups and am still learning even though I've had rats since I was 10 and my sister and mom had rats before!

FERRETS! Basically the same problem as rabbits and guinea pigs. People put them in tiny little cages and just leave them there all day when ferrets are super active and social animals 😔 and the best diet for them is raw meat but it’s super common for people to feed them Marshals or some other low quality kibble.

Jordan Gour at least in my area ferrets aren’t near as neglected! But many people in my area mistreat things like fish and hamsters because they are “for kids” and “easy pets” That’s interesting how in different places etc different things that are acceptable. In my area ferrets are probably viewed more like a pet than an item. Which is good!

Nitrogen cycle is important. Should maybe look it up. It's the reason small tanks don't work and the reason 100 percent water changes are bad.

Depending where you live you cannot even get a hedgehog from a pet store anymore. I had to get my hedgie from a breeder as the usda cracked down in hedgies bc of diseases and people setting them loose

Don't know if other people can relate but I know so many people who want fish as a DECORATION! Yes they can look nice! Yes you can dress up the tank! But if you aren't intending to CARE for the fish then omg set up just a plant tank or something XD

Birds also hate round cages! I get it they look cute but they’re awful. Having no corners makes birds very nervous

Salbion -x- In the UK we have the Animal Welfare Act 2006 which includes the five animal rights: the right to a suitable environment, the need for a suitable diet, the need to exhibit normal behaviour patterns, the need to be kept with or without others, and the need to be protected from pain, injury, suffering, and disease. Although I am very grateful we have this legislation, it is far from perfect and people still get away with horrible mistreatment every day

@@feathersstreet even for dogs and cats this legislation is super basic and minimums are not well defined. Eg. Dog left outside all the time is fine as long as he has access to some sort of shelter and water. If it's not socialised or walked and barks all the time, not a problem.

@@niveusnimbus Essentially, nobody cares until the dog starts barking and then the neighbors call the cop with a noise complaint. Even cats are pretty much considered throwaways by the law (terrible ecological decision though).

When I was younger my neighbor used to have a hamster that she kept in a tiny critter trail cage. It became depressed and started tearing large chunks of skin of itself, and that eventually killed it.

my moms classmate had 2 hamsters and kept them in a jar like a jar of marmelade and they didnt have anything in there she let them sit in their poop and they got food tossed on them.. it broke my heart when she told me this

That’s devastating 😰 my friend had a hamster for a few months. She loved it at first but slowly stopped caring for it, stopped cleaning and feeding it so her mother had to start purchasing the bedding, food, and keep it happy. Unfortunately he died because she kept his cage next to a window in Connecticut winter ☹️

STORY TIME & why you should never trust chain pet stores for advice on pet care: When I was probably 10 or 11, I discovered chinchillas, and wanted one SO BAD. My mom told me I needed to learn all about them before we could consider getting one. I got books from the library and magazines from petsmart. I wrote out a list of questions I still had, and asked my mom to call petsmart to ask, because they should know all, right??? It just so happened that when my mom called, the guy she spoke to said he was actually selling his chin, the cage, and all supplies for $100. Me being 10 year old me, convinced my mom this was the PERFECT opportunity to get one! The stars had aligned!! A week later Charlie was ours. He was an older chin-we never knew his actual age. He lived a good 5 years with us, so we thought. Fast forward 16 years, I'm in my mid 20s and telling my boyfriend that we should get chinchillas, because I had one growing up, so knew ALL about them. So I thought. I'm so thankful for youtube and facebook groups dedicated to chin care that pointed me in the right direction before we adopted our two girls. Looking back, I feel so bad for my Charlie. We had him in a long, short cage filled with plastic items and whatever kind of wood bedding was on sale that week. We basically treated him like a big hamster. But we essentially continued the care he had been getting - that was recommended to us - from a PETSMART EMPLOYEE, so we ignorantly thought it was correct. Although I never recall him showing signs of distress, I so, so wish I could go back and give him a better life. Chins need tall vs long because they've need to jump jump jump! They also can't have ANY plastic in their cages, or just any wood based bedding, because they have very sensitive digestive and respiratory systems. There are so many other things we did wrong with his diet, handling, etc. I'm happy to say that now, at 26, we have two very happy and spoiled chin sisters, in a huge, appropriately furnished cage, who are getting proper diet and exercise. To think this guy was selling his chin and all supplies for $100 should have been a red flag he was already neglecting him. They are NOT cheap pets, or appropriate for kids to be their sole caregiver. We've easily spent over $1500 in just two years of owning them. Sorry this was so long and I keep rambling.. your video just struck close to home. Thank you so much for bringing awareness to proper pet care!! ❤

I agree. Research is necessary. Long before hedgehogs became popular, I got one from a petstores. This was before the internet. They rec'd a diet the total opposite of what they are supposed to eat. He didn't last long. Poor thing probably starved to death! Never believe what petstores tell you. ALWAYS research, and check many sites and especially with experts! I'll always feel guilty.

I work at a pet store and im the only employee there that knows the proper care for small animals (hamster, gerbils, ferrets, etc). Even my companion animal manager gives outdated/incorrect information and whenever I attempt to politely correct her she shuts me down and tells the customer it'll be fine. Customers are always trying to buy critter trails for their hamsters and gerbils but they never want to hear why theyre bad for the animal so I've unfortunately resorted to only telling them about how much of a pain in the ass they are to clean or that theyre usually broken and the animal will most likely escape from it on a regular basis instead of why the cages are unhealthy and dangerous for the animals well being. Yeah a glass tank is more expensive at first because it doesn't come with the accessories that crittertrails do but you'll save so much money in the long run if you get the correct supplies in the first place instead of having to switch things out every time something that's very easily preventable becomes a problem. People need to get their heads out of their asses good lord. I never would have thought people were that insecure about their pet care that they don't even want to listen to the advice given to them by the (well informed) people they asked for help from.

I would like to add that some of my coworkers have picked up some of my advice and I do hear them helping change peoples minds on some products and it makes me tear up a lil coz at least SOME people are listening to me. Also sometimes I'll say something about hamster care and the customers child would grab the complete opposite thing I told them to get and the parent would say " hey what did the nice employee just say, you need to listen to her if you want your pet to like you"

when i had a hamster, i took two critter trails (one two-story and one one-story) and connected them together with the tubes and made fun tube trails with the connectors. i feel like the critter trails are a decent enough price to buy multiple and connect them together for a proper hamster cage. thankfully, kaytee is starting to make their hamster and guinea pig cages larger so hopefully cages that are too small will become less of an issue in the future

I have a dwarf hamster in a critter trail or whatever they are called but he gets to get out every day and play. I do plan on getting him something bigger when I can. My normal hamster lives in a big glass tank and he hates exploring it and tries to stay near his wheel only. I make him move around more by putting his food on the other end lol.

My dad is mad at me because he says I’m turning my room into a zoo *i literally have one baby beardie and two green anoles ;-;* Might get a axolotl on my bday (October 23)

So we don't trust him with others anymore) 2 albino cories, 2 peppered cories, 2 angelfish, 2 snails, one loach, and one type of fish I forgot the name of.

100% agree. ALL animals thrive in larger enclosures. The worst thing you can do with a large enclosure is keep it lacking or empty. Clutter is good.

DiamondWolf I was also going to mention that. I have an 18” bullsnake in a 48x13x18 terrarium that has lots of enrichment; branches he can climb on and several hides and foliage (as well as substrate he can and does burrow in) so he always feels safe. He uses every square inch of his tank and isn’t shy or defensive because he feels secure.

HERMIT CRABS. and FISH. They’re the worst I’ve seen. But close seconds are; TURTLES, BIRDS, SMALL MAMMALS, LIZARDS. Most other animals are OKAY.

Hearing how people neglect their pets is so sad :( At the very least, we know a lot more about animals and information is a lot easier to get these days - there's really no reason for tiny cages etc to even exist anymore!

Ashiko I definitely agree and some reptiles don’t need a glass enclosures like I have a leopard gecko who’s in a 20 gallon plastic bin I got from target and he’s still really happy because I did tons of research about it

Sadly people like to go "cheap" when they get a pet, these people really shouldn't have a pet than, they think oh, reptiles, rodents, birds etc are cheaper than getting a dog, which is true in the long run but you still gotta spend a $100+. People are just uneducated which always upsets me, of course I rather educate than just rant at these people. There is no real excuse to not properly care for any pet. Literally, go online and search "how to properly care of [pet]" and you'll find lots of good links. Personally, I think dedicated forums is where it's at

Al's Critters I must have spent almost nearly £200 for my rescue rats. I’ve never owned them before but I make sure they get the best possible quality of life with interaction everyday, changing food/water/bedding, lots of toys, a safe play pen for out of cage exercise. I think people neglect rats a lot and making the ultimate mistake of just getting one rat. I completely agree, if people are going to really cheap out on their animals then they really shouldn’t be having animals. And it’s not just their cages, toys, food they need you also need to make sure that you can afford the vet bills

@@lucialovecraft Yeah, even with fish, I keep both aquariums and small animals but in both hobbies its the same thing. Although with fish there are more of a "cheap" factor than with rodents. Sometimes I don't even understand why people want a pet when not only do they not want to spend the money but also the time. Aquariums are usually the first pet people get, usually its something less than 10g, but lots of beginners don't even like keeping or taking care of their betta etc, they just keep a empty tank with barely any decorations sometimes and if you're lucky they have a filter or heater. LOL, it seems like people like to keep a "friend" when they shouldn't and don't get a pair when they should. People love keeping hamsters in pairs which usually doesn't end up well, mainly due to the same type of people keeping 2 hamsters in a small container with just one of everything. But when it comes to rats, guinea pigs, or gerbils people only get one. Also thanks for rescuing your rats

Also the rabbit hutches they sell at pet shops are SOOOO not big enough people! They are great for overnight but they need a run!

My rabbit hand a 7 by 3 foot hutch and one of those large dog kennels, to run around in. She was so aggressive but I loved he so much.

Yeah! I brought a long chicken run thing with a house for outside during the day, at night we bring him in and put him in a pet store rabbit hutch, only because we had ours stolen at night once sadly.

Yeah I used to lock my bun in his hutch at night and he hated it so I litter trained him and now he just free roams in my house he loves it

I love how not only is he spitting facts and helping people out with their animals but he also flexing on us.

I was getting two goldfish from petco (I know, not my proudest moment) and I was very happy with the lady who was getting the fish for me, she was asking if I have a massive tank at home, if I cycled, what’s the substrate, etc. it was just good to know that at least some people are educated on the animals Now the goldfish were going in a 1400 gallon pond and were quarantined for a month before being released

I love animals and I want to get a job at the pet store just so that I can inform people about proper pet care and which animals might be right for them because I think a lot of people don’t know what they are doing and I would love to make even a small impact on one animals life and making it better.

I work at a pet store for this reason. If you end up at a pet store, be prepared that it's a very uphill battle. It's an unregulated industry, meaning anything can be sold, safe or not, and companies are under no obligation to provide animal husbandry training to their staff. If you're lucky, you'll end up in a store that takes training very seriously. Either way, you will encounter a LOT of customers who want a disposable pet and aren't interested in good husbandry. It's really exhausting, and impossible, to educate every single one, but the one's who do learn and do decide to do right by their animal, will make it worth it.

I want to *make* my own local pet shop. Y'know? Where *I'm* my own boss and *I'm* the manager. And all the employees are just my friends that I love and trust with pets. Just so I can make sure whatever pets we sell are properly taken care of. I really wish it was easy to start up a business. I love that you want to work at a pet shop in order to spread the right information.

I always find the one thing with people buying animals is most people just buy what they can not what the animal needs. But if you cannot or will not provide proper care for a LIVING animal then get a virtual one.

I am sooo happy that you take care of this stuff. People should know what they do wrong. Thank you. (you are one of my fav KZreadr) i had a 20 galleon for a betta.

This is all so true. I've worked in a pet store for 2 years and am currently studying animal science in college, yet you wouldn't believe the number of people who still fight me on the facts of proper animal care.

I rescued hermit crabs and it made me so sad how many die from being neglected by people, pet stores and they are taken out the wild, & the foods they sell commercially for them are mostly poison, I feed mine only natural no preservative foods, they also need a complex diet. To many things, even down to how they need high humidity, as they have gills and their are many people who dont mist their tank. I researched for months to make sure I knew proper care before rescuing so they can live a good life. It's so sad when live animals arent given proper care. I also agree that there is so much misinformation out there about proper care, especially seen this with hermit crab care. So sad.

Catherine Norman omg i remember i kept my one hermit crab in one of those wire cages and it looked so sad. it died after a year which is terrible and it was only fed saltwater fish food. i am so sorry Pincers

@@bakenman6371 we all make mistakes. I had hermit crabs as a kid and didn't give them proper care, as an adult now I wanted to rescue and hopefully give my crabs atleast a good 10-20 years, since most never even get that.

My mawmaw used to keep her fish in a plant pot with the plant and didn’t even feed it thinking it fed on the plant I felt so bad for it

The thing that makes me the most upset is when people learn new things about their pets and don’t change anything! It’s normal for a person to make mistakes. We all do it. But the problem lies in refusing to change your ways when you learn something new. My budgies never had a TINY cage but it wasn’t great. I also didn’t know they needed to have veggies, or that they need to come out daily and get attention (my old budgies weren’t tamed). I changed SO MUCH of what I did. The first thing I did was get a bigger cage (I’ve got an even bigger cage since then- the previews flight cage fO40). I leave the cage door open pretty much whenever I am home so they can come out and play, and give my tame budgie lots of one on one attention. They get fresh veggies everyday and weekly fruit, along with their seeds and some pellets. I give them a large variety of toys to play with so they never get bored. One thing I more recently learned is how they should have multiple different types of perches. So they now have cotton rope perches, natural wooden perches, and very minimal plastic ones. I think some people think I’m kind of weird when I can’t make plans because I need to take care of my birds. And also just the care I give them in general (better than any budgie owners I have met in person). A lot of people think that they are just birds so it doesn’t matter, but I would feel horrible if I didn’t learn from my mistakes. I think that if a person wants to own an animal they should give it the best possible care. They are living beings and deserve to be treated as such. My sister does have a rabbit that’s in a small cage. I’m trying to convince her to either let me take him or find a new home for him. He hardly gets played with and he doesn’t really get any proper care. Its frustrating.

I tried to tell a girl ( a year younger than me ) that a hamsterball is actually pretty bad for her hamster,I showed her forums there people talked about it. But,she was indenial and thought that all of it was rubbish and they had no idea. Fast forward to summer,she told her mother that I bully her at school and her mum wants to tell on me to the principal. Damn,that family. I told the mother that aswell and she refused to believe it because,her daughter is an angel. Good to know,that the principal will be hearing from other children how the mother of the girl called the children whores. I'm actually pretty sorry for the girl but,I'm also sorry for their hamster.

I think the biggest one I've seen the most of is cats. Most people see them as antisocial noniteractive independent pets. While sometimes that is true I can speak to owning many in my time (mostly fosters) even previous ferals can get super lonely and if you don't give them attention they will get hostile and then they get kicked out of the home they are in. Its sad but super common. Also most people neglect a cats most basic instinct. To hunt. I have a mostly blind cat and even he with very very little visions hunts (although he hunts huge dog toys). So if you dont give them toys or activities that mimic that behavior issues will arise. They also scavenge so hiding treats and food they have to find helps keep them entertained and happy. They also require alot of climbing space so if you arent prepared for them to be on your cabinets on your fridge and counters, my recommendation dont get a cat. They will climb anything to explore and feel safe. They are creates of intelligence independence and absolute beauty when taken care of properly. I have 2 brothers polar opposites. One cant see the other cant be alone. Munchkin (my mostly blind kitty) is very independent hate being held and rarely climb but if I go more than an hour with out talking to him he chases me down and lets me know. His brother, pumpkin, is the opposite he is on top of everything into everything and will annoy you until he gets his way. He is very social and actually panics (like a dog) if im gone too long. He doesnt care if you hold him any way if hes getting attention hes your buddy. And lastly ive got my moms cat, Mystic, and a foster, Leo who goes home soon. Mystic couldnt careless if you love on her but she will bring you toys to hide and play with and if you dont she will become a living terror. Leo on the other hand could careless about playing with you but will climb in bed with you and beg for attention and if he doesn't get it, he isnt afraid to knock your phone out of your hand and wait til you love on him to let you have it back. All these cats are different but just between these 4 its hard to find time for my tanks because cats really do require that much attention space and enrichment. Dont be fooled They are great pets even for kids sometimes. But you have to give them what they need more than just food water and a litter box. I hope this wasn't too long or offensive but its the shortest I could make it and have it make sense what my point was.. Edit I forgot cats are also super social with each other so getting a pair is actually good for them. Some may bond up really well. Like my foster Leo and my own cat munchkin did bond up and in gonna be super sad seperating them but the brothers are also bonded so it shows how complex their social behavior is because all the boys , Leo munchkin pumpkin, are also all bonded to me.

The most abuse I see with cats is people not fixing them and letting them stroll around unsupervised. I've seen too many cats dying because they get poisoned, lost, fight with other cats/dogs, get shot, hit by cars, get sick because of sexual relationships with fiv/felv positive strays... it's baffling to me.

This is so true, I and my mom often feel cruel for having our cats as only house cats, they never get to go outside since we live in the city and it's not safe. I've promosed myself that when I get cat I will teach them to go on a leach so they can be active outside.

I agree! I really wish people knew how interactive cats are. They're so fun and affectionate, and it bothers me when people think otherwise. My grandpa routinely says "Cat's are okay. But they don't really do anything. They don't play, and they can't play fetch." (he is a dog person through and through) and it annoys me because that's completely wrong. I also wish people understood that well taken care of cats don't smell. What usually causes the smell is the liter box, which needs to be cleaned at least twice a day, and that each cat should have it's own liter box, because they don't like sharing. However you can train a cat to use the toilet (which in my opinion is better than fetch!) and then have an even easier time. Also in response to the comment section about outdoor cats... I had a kitten I raised but couldn't keep and I ended up giving it to a relative, who let it be an outdoor cat. The cat (Alexander) lived for only five years, because he would fight other cats and he was very alpha male (my little muscle man), so he got into fights regularly. My relative didn't care, and eventually he got scratched up, had internal bleeding and died. Then I heard that indoor cats can have a lifespan almost up to 15 years, so my baby only lived one third of his life. I have grown a small resentment towards my relative, as I trusted her to give my Alexander the life I wanted to but couldn't. But I know my relative didn't do anything intentionally, and she probably didn't know any better, plus he was born an outdoor cat, I guess that was the path he was destined to walk, or should I say, pounce. :) Be careful letting your cat be an outdoor cat!

I feel so sad. When I was younger I had maybe 3 beta fish (at different times) and they were in tiny tanks, I feel so bad now. I know it isn’t my fault because I was too young to know how to care for them (I was like 5-6), so it was my parents fault. RIP Sally, swing, bubbles 😣

Thank you for what you do. I'm so tired of seeing animals, all animals, mistreated. People don't seem to research what they purchase. These are living creatures and ALL deserve the best care we can give them.

When I was in third grade I had five female guinea pigs (Rosie, Skinny, Petal, Chicken and Pickle) who lived outside. I consider their names to be pretty iconic lol. They all lived together in a really big dog hutch that we locked up at night. During the day they had a "safe space" to go to and then they had the whole backyard to graze around with a bunch of plants to hide under and a huge water bowl to relax by. They used to run out and oink at me and my mum for treats. You may think that living in the backyard was not suitable nor ideal, but pretty much everything was covered and there were no predators to worry about considering they were locked up at night and had places to hide during the day. They lived long, happy lives and passed away of natural causes. We had actually rescued them from a really bad home where they had fleas and were malnourished. Watching this video I am happy to see that the set up I had was safe and really big for them to spend the rest of their lives in. I currently have rabbits who live in a similar situation except they have a huge shed that I bought from home depot for them to be locked up in at night :)

God. These all hurt my soul. I'm guilty of the beta fish tank and the hamster cage unfortunately. But for both i was a kid... so i guess not REALLY my fault? But at the same time it made me so sad. The birds. Oh good lord...the self mutilation is so so friggen sad. Ouch. Poor babies. Happy note. For the bunnies. I've seen two people keep rabbits and they both did amazingly! One was an indoor living space that was HUGE paired with a MASSIVE outdoor exercise area. The other was a free roam bun in their house. Idk about an exercise space Tho. The first people had like 5 bunnies. The second did only have 1, but he was a happy boy and their only pet. So he got tons of attention. The others, I've never really had experienced someone keeping one. On a side note. We got a ball python. We did get her from a pet store. Being uninformed at the time. Yes, that is our own fault. However. We did get her a 40 gal right off. We listened to the store employees unfortunately and got her aspen substrate and only had like 1 crappy log hide and a bowl. Not much else. BUT. We did our research and within a month had fixed our mistakes. She has an issue with shedding so we looked up how to help her with that, you and @goherping (alex) made excellent recommendations. We now use coconut fibers mixed with forest floor. She hasn't has an issue with shedding since we switched. We also have a lot more in her enclosure now as well. She's happy noodle now. So thank you so very much for doing what you do.

JemiQui77 I’m guilty of bad beta fish care, Tyler helped me fix it with his videos. When I was a kid I had hamsters and did not do as good as I should have. It was pure lack of knowledge. There was no internet or KZread in the 90’s. My cages were bigger than most at the time. I would save my allowance for months to upgrade my cages. I’m so happy these videos exist to help people properly care for their pets!

So I’ve just found your channel this morning and have really been enjoying your videos. I love that you include fish on this list. I have a Betta in a 10 gallon tank and he absolutely loves it. I feel so sad when I go to the pet store and I see people picking out tiny “fish bowls”. Animals definitely deserve to have space that is going to give them their best life. Thank you for making the videos that you do!

I have a custom built rabbit cage for two of my bunnies. They do have a wire bottom, but a lot of the wire is covered so they don’t have sores. They my happy buns! They do have a run underneath, so they have plenty of space.

*halfway through apologies if you bring it up* i absolutely love your videos like this, i was hoping you can do something similar to rats. Its insane how bad people treat their rats. One girl was selling a ”3 month old male” who looked to be skin and bones and the size of a 5 week old rat who was kept in the smallest lizard terrarium with a front door with nothing but a small blanket. You would think its known that is horrible treatment but its not. As someone who has owned 18 rats in 6 years (11 currently) i highly. highly appreciate youtubers or influencers to bring them up. Understandable you dont own them but i trust you enough to know at least the general rat needs, if youre interested in doing a part two to this, please consider rats. I find them to be the or one if the most neglected pets❤️ love the hair by the way haha.

Doc the Cat pet rats are bred as feeders (ive been wanting a snake so im good with it) but its a really bad idea to feed live rats. Theyre good fighters and always damage the snake. If they refuse to feed frozen theres always babies being sold on kijiji from breeders making unbalanced rats but its always better to feed frozen. Buying straight from a petstore isnt the way to go so theyre already not feeding the snake right, i wouldnt trust them with the rats even just as feeders

Nightcore Pink911, I recommend rabbit cages for hamsters! Since hamster cages are too small for hamsters but bunny cages are perfect. But they are too small for bunnies. They should change the hamster cage advertising for fleas, the bunny/guinea pig cages to hamsters, and the dog exercise pens can be for dogs and bunnies/guinea pigs!

great video! I'm glad you talked about betta fish. I feel so bad when I see them in these tiny glass jars that are barely bigger than they are. When I was younger and didn't know better, I kept bettas in like 1/2 gallon tanks, but then I did research and now I provide them with the space they need. Right now I have a female betta in a 20 gallon long with some neon tetras, cherry barbs, a nerite snail, and two amano shrimps.

I get so so mad when I see pet store workers referring people to round bowls and tiny tanks for Berta fish. Those tiny tanks cost more than a 5 gallon tank most the time. I want to work in my local pet store but they only accept people who aren’t in school.

I agree. I've kept goldfish for years. I was in a petstore buying food and overheard a worker talking a woman into buying a bowl for the goldfish she was buying for her kid. I'm usually not confrontational but I actually spoke up. The employee was pissed, the customer was confused and I left. Don't know the outcome. But how wrong!

I got bought a res on impulse at 16, didn’t know anything about turtles at the time. Over the past 3 years she’s grown from a half inch to 9, I’m expecting for her to be on the larger side. We’ve gone through a lot together being when I was unemployed, moving across the country, living restrictions, expensive vet bills, and she takes up most my free time and money but she’s worth gold. I told her when I got her that I was going to give her the best a captive turtle can, and I’m planning to keep that promise. She gets yearly check ups in which the vet has told me she’s growing well and my habitat is healthy for her, so I’m hoping I’ll spend most of my life with her. It absolutely kills me to think of how many other babies were being sold on the side of the street where I bought her, and how many have passed away by now.

This is a great idea for a video so many people don’t know the care for the animals they keep!

I know it’s probably not SUPER common, but lizards(especially beardies bc that’s the most common one you see at pet stores) are neglected. I’ve seen people get these itty bitty baby lizards and keep them in like 10-15 gallons(which as a juvenile is okay) but never up the tank size as they grow and the poor babies can be stunted and depressed. Some people only give them a heat lamp and keep them in the dark. Their diet is commonly not researched either and they can easily be malnourished, not given variety, not given added calcium, etcetera. This may have been a little rant, but I just wanted to put this one out there. Have a great day!!!

i agree! i got a beardie from someone who 'got tired of smelling it' which kills me bc i had two and i literally never smelled them. but when i got her, she came with a 5 gallon tank theyd kept her in (she was about a foot long), and they only fed her meal worms, with no calcium powder or anything. they also used heat mats and a heat lamp with a regular lightbulb and no thermometer. i was 12 and learned all the basic care within a week from google. theres no excuse for treating beardies like that when theyre SO easy

Thank you for this information, some people just don’t know. You helped me with beta fish care, thanks! I just rescued a Dutch bunny. He was 5 years old, never had hay, had wrong food, had beginning stages of GI Stasis, no greens, yogurt drop treats, no litter box, no toys & wrong cage size. He was very loved but the owner just had no knowledge about proper Rabbit husbandry. She saw stuff at a pet store with a rabbit picture & thought it was ok. He is living in luxury now 🐰❤️🙌🏻

I love how you spread awareness on proper animal care! I went to a local pet store the other day. And they sold this man a baby bunny in a CRITTER TRAIL. The tiny one that has one floor. My heart broke and I couldn’t help but cry. My boyfriend said something to him about it. And they just didn’t care they’re giving people false information on animal care. I will NEVER go there again. They aren’t even a chain pet store. The owner before was amazing and was the only pet store I trusted. But not anymore.

I completely agree with you..i also think african dwarf frogs should be on that list. Most stores make u think u can stick them in these tiny "crap beta" type tanks. I have 4 in a 20 long and they use ALL of that space. They swim as much as fish do. I cant imagine them in a tiny bowl. So cruel.

Jess Triplett I agree. I’ve got two of them in with my betta and a cory catfish. They’re in a 30 gallon and all of them enjoy it so much.

I agree! I have 2 African dwarf frogs and the amount of swimming around they do it seems very cruel to put them in a tiny space.

I use to keep my beta in a 2 gallon tank but I moved to a 5 gallon recently. I put a couple of plants in the tank and it came with a heater. + I've always had a filter for his tanks

My neighbors used to have a bearded dragon that didn’t even HAVE an actual enclosure. They had this fairly big room that had easy water and food access, and plenty of places to climb. I think he really liked it, and it was pretty cool!

When I was younger, my daycare though it would be fun to let each of us take home a goldfish, and we got to make the aquarium at daycare. My mom was pissed that there was no consent from any of the parents but she let me keep it and I had like a 20-30 gallon tank for my one goldfish and he lived about 6 years. I was really young, like, 6 so I thin I did pretty well. I have a free roam bunny now I love animals.

I was picking up a cage a few days ago, and the dude who was helping me bring it up the the counter asked me what kind of bird I was planning on putting in it. I told him I was planning on taking in a rescue sun conure (someone dumped it in a pet supply store a friend of mine works at expecting them to take it in despite them not even carrying animals) and he literally tried to tell me that I was wasting my money getting that big of a cage, then proceeded to try to sell me a cage that I honestly wouldn't call appropriate for any size of bird. That was the moment I became concerned about the information pet stores are giving out to naive people that don't know any better. It's sad that in most cases of animal abuse the owners have no idea they're doing anything wrong.

I have my betta fish in a 20 gallon he loves it so much it's fully planted and it looks bueatiful I also keep my budgies in a huge outdoor custom aviary it's really cool

My sister got her two year old daughter a guinea pig and it’s so neglected. She doesn’t feed it the proper range of foods, he has no toys or things to chew on, and his cage is way too small. She won’t listen to anything I have to say because “that what the pet store employees said to do”.

Good for you for putting this super HELPFUL info out there! I wish more people did the proper research before getting pets. You are 100% right in that many people get their pet care "knowledge" from pet store employees only :(
