Reacting to The LaBrant Family Impulse Buying a Big Commitment Pet from Petsmart

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

One of the most common mistakes people make when purchasing a pet is not doing research beforehand and relying on pet stores to tell you what to do and this is why so many animals aren't cared for properly and are often abandoned because people don't know what they're getting themselves into.

Yes! I just rescued a beardie that is emaciated and ill due to her previous owners not understanding beardie care. She's never had veggies until now, her heat lamp was tiny (literally a 50-watt bulb), and she never had a UVB bulb. Of course, she was purchased from Petsmart. It cost nearly $300 just to get her into a vet, get fluids, parasite screening, blood work, and antibiotics. Not to mention all the upkeep costs. People want animals but don't want to pay to keep them healthy or happy. :(

Animals just shouldn't be sold in pet stores. I think this would radically reduce impulse buying animals. Where I live it's illegal to sell cats and dogs in pet stores, and most pet stores just sell equipment anyway. When I'll get an animal, I'll get it from a breeder who takes good care of their animals and aren't just trying to make profit.

I like this idea better than any other comment on this video. I have been guilty of impulse buying a pet before, but all it took was one person showing me how to care for the pet rather than just criticizing me & now my impulse buy is a well cared for happy healthy pet. If he went in & helped them learn how to care for their pet, it could end up a great experiance for the family in the long run. The kids could learn to be responsible for their pet & properly care for it. We all make choices that aren't well thought out sometimes. People like you help people like me learn & ultimately have a good experiance . I love you for your response to this.

This honestly really upsets me because if they took a whole whopping 10 minutes to research this tortoise they would most likely be detured and that's just scratching the surface and not even getting into the details of owning one. That's what happened to me and my brother and our parents, my brother wanted a turtle (not a tortoise but similar) and my mum wanted to look at their care online before getting one and not even 15 minutes later she said "no" because we actually saw what they take to care for and we weren't ready for that. I applaud you for making this as it certainly brings an awareness to the dangers of impulse buying.

It breaks my heart seeing how people treat animals like things. How these people went into a pet store looking for a dog and came out with a tortoise which they probably had 0 knowledge about. No healthy diet or protected enclosure???? Before I got my pet bird my family made me do MONTHS of research to ensure I was ready for the responsibilities of owning and taking care of an animal. They’d even randomly ask me questions on what to do if something happened. They’d even ask me what I would feed it. It’s sickening to know that, that tortoise will probably never live a healthy and/or happy life. Please NEVER impulse buy animals. It’s borderline abuse Edit: I’m not saying you need to do months of research but what I think is people should be responsible and have at least the basic knowledge and know how to take care of that specific animal

I don’t love one more than the other, and I give them each the research and respect they need. The fact that they purchased this animal, some very minimal care supplies, then stuck it outside in an unprepared manner makes me disappointed.

The moment the girl said, "Can we get a bird, I'll keep it in a cage." I FREAKED. Birds are extremely hard to care for and take months and maybe even years of extensive research. If you keep a bird in its cage and interact with it incorrectly it will get sick (mentally and physically) and die. oh and "We can get a BONUS pet" and " The dogs a big decision and the other animals aren't as big of a decision." are things that are not true and just don't happen. and at the end, they got a friken tortoise without any knowledge about them an animal that will grow huge and lives WAYYYYYYYYYYY longer than a dog just because they couldn't wait for a few days to get a dog.

You are ABSOLUTELY 100% correct on how pet stores force their employees to talk to people. I worked at a PetSmart and if I spent too long with people giving them info they had NO idea about, gave them information on something that isn't in store or just in general went "off script" with the incorrect care guides I got in trouble. If we were busy I was literally told to just hand them a care guide and box up the animal. It's a rough one dude. It's an imperfect world and not every store is like that obviously but it was my experience... I just hope people get the CORRECT info and go into this knowing fully what they think they are getting into. It's not the animals fault they were cute and your kid was bored and now they have MBD or some other permanent situation out of human ignorance or neglect.

I like the LaBrant family but EVERYONE should do research before buying any kind of animals. Especially animals that are big commitments. But congrats to the LaBrant family for their pregnancy!

I’m so glad you addressed this. They can’t accept comments on their videos so I commented on an Instagram post - they haven’t even addressed it. It was the epitome of an impulse buy without even researching it at all. I hope if they keep the tortoise they research and provide at least the standards of care it deserves

I used to work in a chain pet store and I was DEFINITELY told a ton of lies about exotic pet care. Even when I did my own research there was still a lot that I couldn’t do, because employees aren’t allowed to tell people that any of the products are actually bad for the animals. For example, if someone wanted a betta and a half-gallon bowl I could encourage them to buy an appropriate setup, but I had to word it super carefully so as not to make the tiny bowl “seem bad” (even though of course it is bad)

THANK YOU for making this video , it wasn't petty at all and I really hope this makes it to the Lebrant family and they can take your advice and take proper care of this new serious commitment. It Is so sad that the most well known and powerful pet store chains is so bad at informing their customers on proper care! I know they are running a business but they shouldn't be lying to customers just so they can make a sale.

I personally watched videos and researched corn snakes and ball pythons for the last year and finally got one two weeks ago. I couldn't agree more that doing the research and taking the time to make sure you are ready for the commitment is absolutely necessary.

This makes me so sad. I saw this earlier and was hoping someone would talk about it. I am a reptile owner and hoping to get a tortoise one day. But there is no way I'd just grab one for the store one day. I also have experience and watch reptile videos ways. Thank you for your videos. Do you know what breed of tortoise they bought?

This was incredibly helpful 😍 I had no idea this family existed. I wish I still hadn't tbh... I hate the ignorance and when you have kids learning from you, it just seems like they were absent-minded entirely... Love your videos Tyler
