I raised a beautiful, golden colored pigeon as a child. I was given this new hatchling and no one knew what it was. I fed it, taught it how to fly, and it eventually went outside with a flock and would fly down to me and land on my shoulder. It was such a magical childhood experience.

They're the most gentle loving creatures when kept as pets. My dad's pet pigoen died after he passed away. She looked for him all over the house. When she couldn't find him, she climbed on the bed and slept on his pillow. Few hours later, she was gone. They're loyal to death, literally so.

This reminds me of a story when there was a graduation ceremony and one of the white pigeons released didn’t come back to the school. Instead it found its way into my yard where it approached my mother, she would put seeds out for her, and soon the pigeon was a regular and would sit under my moms chair. The white pigeon one day brought back a mate to show my mom. The two pigeons eventually moved on, being married for life.

That's so cute! I have a similar story from when I lived with my grandpa (rip). We had a lot of small birds (and magpies and crows), but the small ones were the majority. There was one in particular that got very cheeky. A great tit. He'd (I'm assuming based on the chest stripe being broader, which is their "gender difference") sit at the kitchen sink window and peck at it to get your attention so you'd give him a treat (big fan of cheese that one). If you weren't in the kitchen, he'd make his way down the windows along the porch until he found someone. He was the 2nd wild bird that I ever handfed (he'd land on my hand at either sit and eat, or take it ans leave). The first was an Eurasian blue tit that my grandpa had a similar friendahip with years earlier. One day he did bring his kids (maybe also the mom), and it was so adorable.

When I was a child my mother took in an injured pigeon and treated it's broken wing. She kept the wing splinted for a few weeks and when she removed the splint kept the bird in a cage for a day just so it could get used to the feeling of the bare wing without attempting to fly and re-injure the it. I swear that bird often visited us once she released it. My brother kept homing pigeons when I was a teen. He really loved those birds. This has me wanting one now. 😏

Worked at a ice cream shop where we made our own waffle cones, and we would save the broken bits in a tub labeled "for Bartholomew" Bartholomew was a pigeon that came to us in the back alley for help after being attacked by a cat and had all his tail feathers ripped out. He was so patient and sweet, always on time to get his snacks before hiding for the day. He eventually healed enough to make it out on his own, but we would catch glimpses of him stopping by for a quick "coo" E: can't believe I forgot to clarify I took it upon myself to feed him millet and sunflower after a couple of weeks of visitation, when he made it obvious he was there to stay (for the short run) 🥴

Also, pigeons are more domestic than parrots! Back in the 1700s n’ that time pigeons were bread(much like dogs) to be family/inside pets until people started to get tired of them and decided to throw them out in the streets. That’s also why you see so many pigeons in cities, because their whole purpose in life was to be a human’s pet Edit: also, they were used as carrier pigeons for mail. The postal service put them out of business

Last summer a stray pigeon randomly showed up at my house on our truck (we live in a more rural suburb) and seemed to immediately get attached to me. It would constantly follow me around as I did yard chores and would try and hop up on me if I knelt down. If I went back inside it’d go back to the truck. If I came out, it’d fly back towards me. It was… strangely endearing. I wish I took it in now. I didn’t at the time because we’ve got cats and dogs and I had no clue if this bird was already someone’s pet or where to even begin in terms of pigeon care. So I just gave it some seed and left it outside, looked for any missing pigeon notices online. My mom eventually needed to use the truck and slowly drove until the pigeon flew off. A couple days later, I find a bunch of familiar colored feathers and a severed bird leg in the backyard. I’m confident it was that bird since I haven’t seen it around all through winter. I’m still bummed about it.

depending on where you live, rock doves ("feral" domestic pigeons) are free to be kept! theyre kinda like "feral" housecats here, invasive species that you can catch and keep. also, theyre thought to be direct descendents of war pigeons, just a lil fun fact! but if you want a fancy pigeon, theres plenty of pigeon breeders all over the world. just read into those if youre interested and learn what each breed is like. good luck!

This is very true! I once meet a grandma who raised one and so the pigeon followed her everywhere. She knew how to fly and live on her own but she always came back to the grandma. She was, like, SUPER chill. She let me grab her and would climb up in my hands and arms, she'd eat from my hand and if I send her off she'd fly and then come back to me. This was literally minutes after I meet her. Absolutely adorable. Pigeons are so cute.

I actually dont want too many people to come here because it'd be tragic to see our beautiful rolling farmlands, forests, and meadows just built over.
