*PLEASE READ* (Note this is mostly aimed at parents) Hamsters are not toys to give to your children! The person who gave me her said they bought it for their (6yo ish) son and he had gotten bored of her and therefore wanted to get rid of her.She wasnt in good condition and wasnt taken care of.Props to them not keeping it and at least acknowledge that she wasnt living the best life but it shouldnt have got to that stage, The reasons why hamsters have such a short lifespan is because they aren't taken seriously and are just handed to children with no knowledge or understanding at simple request.Animals are for life-wether they are a hamster, budgie or dog...please think it through before getting a pet for your child. If your child has done thorough research and can prove they can look after the animal they want then go ahead but animals are living beings who need love and affection. They arent a one week thing theyre a commitment.please spread awareness about this!!

Absolutely!!! Look at the shelters- half of the animals are christmas gifts! People should also have in mind if they can afford a pet! Not only food and toys, but also vetbills. How many cats have one litter after another because people can't afford sterilization. It's a never ending circle, caused by peoples dumbness ... i hate these selfish dumba...s🤬🤬🤬

My kids insisted on getting a hamster just over two years ago, I agreed, the thing is she’s my responsibility. I make them watch everytime I feed, change her water, clean her cage, let her play. I want them to have an understanding of how much work and responsibility a pet is, but I refuse to let a pet suffer to teach that lesson. She was a rescue, she was given away because she “had too many babies”. She’s extremely sweet and gentle, probably the best hamster I’ve owned and it just breaks my heart that people view them as disposable. Btw she’s going on two and a half years living with me, gets lots of exercise and daily fruits/veggies as well as her hamster food. I was told she was probably at the end of her life when we got her, obviously not and I’m very glad I got a chance to prove them wrong.

My mother in law got my daughter a hamster when she was 11. He was a runt, getting attacked daily. The pet store took him out and handled him all the time. She named him Arlo. He was the smartest hamster I’ve ever met. He would roll on his back to get tummy rubs, he would escape his very elaborate home, get to the dog bowls and steal food, taking it back up to his house. We don’t know how. He insisted that we carried him in a scarf around our neck so he could see the world. He showed love. He lived almost 5 years. Miss you Arlo!!!

Had a similar thing happen. Neighbors didnt want her anymore because the kids would be traumatized if she died. She was a senior when we got her, around 2~. We called her Dumpling. Made her little salads, got her a bigger cage with all the toys and stuff she wanted. She lived until 4~, dying of old age. We made a tiny grave for her in the garden. Rip Dumpling. I used to love to sit with her in my hand as she ate a few seeds. We would allow her stimulation time until she got tuckered out. At her age she only lasted about 30 minutes before asking to go rest.

I worked at a pet store for two years, and one of the things I loved about that place was that we were required to make sure clients had EVERYTHING the animal would need before we were allowed to sell. It also put me in a great position to inform folks that even if the animal wasn't on the same level as a person in terms of intelligence, it still had needs, wants, and feelings. (I took home a disabled dwarf ham from that job - in defiance of all expectations, he lived for FOUR YEARS. His name was Gimpy, and he was made of sass and hatred. We still loved him)

This is how I ended up with my tiny best friend, a 5 pound Chihuahua. An awful woman used to buy purebred and exotic pets on craigslist, then when they lost novelty she would stop caring for them and just buy another. My tiny dog and two others were tossed out in the yard where they would cry, and freeze, and be fearful in the dark. The neighbors got sick of hearing them cry and did the reasonable thing, throw poison into the yard. This killed two of the dogs, so the husband finally mustered enough compassion to give away the surviving dog. There's no question in my mind that how a human being treats animals says a lot about their integrity in many other areas.

A while back, my sister moved out and left her hamster in my basement and didn't even tell me about it. I was down there cleaning one day and heard noises, and found her scratching around in her tiny cage for food. We gave her a big tank with tons of soft bedding to tunnel through and everything. We spoiled her until she passed a couple months later. It just seemed so cruel to me that my sister just left her to die alone in the dark. We loved getting up every morning and watching her wake up and peek her little head about with her sleepy little eyes. So precious.

He had wet tail though, so I called petsmart to see what I'm supposed to do and they said that we can return him and get a new one, like he was a pair of pants. I told them "no, I just want him to get better" and they took him for a week and called me to come and get him because he was all better. I loved that hamster with my whole heart and cried for 3 months after he passed away. He was bestest friend, even my dad (he stayed with us for a bit) was shocked with the relationship I had with a hamster. The next hamster we got, my mom (this time it was her staying with us for a bit) was shocked to see how I treated my ham hams. They never treated their animals well, unless it was a dog. Even the cats we had, growing up, wasn't treated well because in my mom's exact words "cats are a dime a dozen". She was also shocked about how I treat my cat and that changed her whole perspective on them. She now has a catio for hers and freaks out if he leaves for a couple days. She thought I was being mean because I don't let my cat roam outside forever and that he gets supervised outside time and doesn't leave the yard. But, fails to realize how mean it is to dump cats out in the middle of the desert.

@@TheRosieBoyI get it, small animals are just as unique and full of personality as dogs or cats. They build strong bonds with people, and can be affectionate. My guinea pig, before he passed away a few months ago, wasn't a cuddler, he showed his love and affection through mostly just hanging out with you, enjoying your company. He only was a cuddler when he was scared or stressed after vet visits (nail trims, because I have hand tremors/shakey hands), I would hold him up to my chest, and he would nuzzle into my neck as I told him it was ok, momma's here. He was my best friend, but more than anything, he was my baby. He passed at 6 years old. I miss him everyday. He was the big tough man type, throwing his weight around, violently rearranging his furniture lol, yanking the hay from his manger before sticking his face in it to eat it. Loudly drinking water. He also bounced back from problems like it was nothing, heck he survived a 6 hour plane ride like a champ. He also loved to watch his shows. He'd sit there and watch what was on, turn, grab some hay, put his attention back to his shows as he ate the hay in his mouth like popcorn. He was silly, very smart, strong, but also a sensitive momma's boy, and a diva. He was a complicated lil guy, but it's clear he saw himself as 10 feet tall. Gregarious and boisterous, just a big, friendly, goofy personality, who loved being a star.

100%. Even though I was 9-12ish, I treated mine like a member of the family. She had a big 3 level cage with tubes going all over, but I also let her out to roam around as much I could. She was big and could fit a ferret leash, so I would take her out to play in nature all the time. I read all the books, researched all the different types of food she could and couldn’t eat, and pretty much every dollar I had went to her. When we took a road trip, she came with us. She had to, there was no way I was leaving her with someone else who might not give her the same love and care as I would. When she got a big lump and the vet recommended I put her down, I was devastated. She was my best friend. We had a funeral for her and I made scrapbook pages of all our adventures.

I was at one of "those stores" one day, when they had some cats from the shelter for adoption. I witnessed a woman and several children, looking at the kittens. The children were begging their mom to let them have a kitten. I heard Mom tell them that since they already had a cat, they couldn't get a kitten. The kids countered with a suggestion that they take their adult cat to a shelter, then get the kitten. Mom didn't even hesitate to agree with that. I was horrified & told one of the kids that they couldn't just throw their other cat away. The child said they wouldn't do that, they would just bring her back to the store. It's no wonder our society has no idea how to take care of Anything--alive, or not! It's so sad. 😢 Thank you for being kind to this tiny furbaby. ❤

Hamsters run 5 miles in the wild. They require a LOT of space and enrichment. Most pet stores don't even sell the right sized wheels for them. If you want a hamster, you will spend more money than getting a dog. Hamsters are VERY expensive and 99% of things will have to be ordered online. They only live a few years. There isn't a commercial diet that is good for them, so you have to mix multiple brands. Tubes are dangerous, balls are dangerous and wire wheels are dangerous. Don't keep hamsters together, never do a full cage clean unless they get mites. They love organic baby food puffs. Do not get a syrian, they require tons more room, and even if you give them a giant 10 foot long enclosure, they will still be grumpy and hate you, especially females. Hamsters are NOT for beginners or for children or teens. Hamsters are an advanced adult pet that costs a lot of money, especially at the vet.

My pets cost a lot of time and money. I'm moving out soon and I'm also working on getting my first job, going to HISET classes twice weekly, studying hours a day for the HISET, preparing for college, and dealing with my health. I have a lot of mental issues and physical issues. I've been anorexic since I was 12 and now I am severely anemic and I have to get iron transfusions soon. I get dizzy often and it's hard to breathe sometimes due to my asthma and anemia. I never let that get in the way of my pets though, they are my #1 priority! I get my parents didn’t really know better, but we had way to many hamsters / guinea pigs / beta fish / other fish that had tiny homes compared to what they should have, and not enough toys/proper food/proper bedding. Me too, I loved my pet rat. Her name was Draco, she was albino and she was so incredibly smart and I taught her to dance for peanuts 😂❤ she had a massive aquarium cage that was the length of my dresser. Anything you could imagine a rat wanting she had. She got a tumor but lived for about two or three years. I saved her from becoming a feeder.

That's great, but if it hasn't already been done, someone should get her to the vets so she can get a checkup, and all the vaccines she needs especially a rabies vaccine. Also if she is going to be living at the workplace, she should have some sort of shelter during bad weather or maybe someone could bring her home, or if she's more of a feral cat, or barn cat, maybe bring her to a barn for the winter at least. The rabies vaccine is very important though. People can catch it and not even realize that they have it for months to a year and once they develop the symptoms, it is too late. It is fatal at that point. You'd said people had been scratched, and bitten, and it spreads through bites and also just scratches too, so it is worrisome if she has not gotten a vaccine.

People don’t think about smaller animals as being commitments often. Had a situation where someone bought a live hermit crab for white Christmas gift exchange. It wasn’t for a specific person (kinda like pass around the gifts until we stop) and the person who got made it clear they didn’t want it (didn’t tell the person who bought). Thankfully someone took it come but I was so mad at the person who brought it because they thought it was “such a unique gift”. Totally ruined the night since no one really cared they brought a live animal just to hand off to someone.

That's what makes having small animals so rewarding. You can spoil the hell out of them. My gerbil had 1 wire cage on a bottom shelf connected through tubes to two 20 gallon tanks and her penthouse suite 10 gallon tank on the top shelf where she slept. I would block every escape route and let her out to run around my room where she'd climb up onto my shoulder to look around. I once found her tank open but she had escaped just long enough to chew through my fairy lights and then went back inside. So, I must have been doing something right.

Honestly nothing makes me sadder and angrier than people who treat living things as a toy, just because this animal is small it doesn’t mean it doesn’t need a large space and things to entertain it. Every parent should think of any kind of animal from a fish to a bunny as a real responsibility and tell that to their kids if they really want a pet and if the child is too small to understand then don’t get the pet.

Aw, the little girl looked so happy to have a nice clean living/play space, clean toys and fresh food and water. When I was little we had a precious little Beagle sibling who was cherished and loved. My siblings and I had hamsters, gerbils and mice for pets along with some very large aquariums for our fish. All were kept clean, healthy and happy. Our parents instilled in us a love and respect for creatures great and small. The pandemic made some people 'lonely' so they got a dog or a cat. Many of these horrible people surrendered these pets post pandemic because caring for them was 'time consuming'. That makes me so sad. Fur babies aren't a source of entertainment. They aren't here to amuse you. They are little beings with hearts, souls and feelings.

Thank you for giving her a second chance in a healthier and happier environment! My Boomer MIL is exactly that parent that buys animals when she shouldn’t. Did with my husband and his siblings when they were kids, going so far as to brag about throwing my husbands pet rat out of the window because it disgusted her, and luckily he found it alive and had to rehome it so his mother didn’t hurt it again. But she now buys animals for my children. My girls are a bit older and have the compassion necessary to care for animals, but I now have a Parakeet and a new puppy (she’s Klee Kai and Aussie so she’s exhausting rn) that I have to care for on top of the usual responsibilities that come with life. She got my daughter a Beagle puppy when she turned 7 which we wound up taking in and I loved that dog almost like another child, we gave her a great life until she was killed by a hit and run last July. I’m still broken over it and didn’t want a puppy so now I’m not bonding well with this new one. She also got a kitten for herself until he was too rambunctious (as kittens are) so we took him in too, though now he’s my absolute baby and helps with the loss of our dog. But tldr; adults have got to stop getting animals if they have no desire to care for them. They’re alive too. Science has proven they feel emotions, they need nutrition and play time. Small kids don’t really comprehend that so much.

I know they’re not hamsters, but same concept, my mom bought Guinea pigs for my littlest brother (around 10 at the time) and he kept the three of them in a tiny cage (probably 1.5ft x 3 ft with no toys or hides or anything. No socialization. They’d try to hide at the slightest noise but had nowhere to hide. She originally got just one Guinea pig, but I asked her to get it some friends as they’re social creatures. I regret asking for that now. They were not taken care of, the bedding would stink up the whole house as it went so long without changing. I was moved out at this point so I didn’t know how bad it really was until it was too late. They eventually thirsted to death. Everyone there just let it happen. I would implore my brother or mom to just rehome them when I visited, but they wouldn’t. It makes me physically sick to think about the quality of those little Guinea pigs’ lives and their deaths. I wish I hadn’t asked for friends for the one because the other two suffered for it.

I asked and my older younger brother told me finally. But yea, some people are lesser than animals and shouldn’t have any.

As newlyweds our first pet was a hamster. We named him Swueeku. He was nocturnal and our first few nights he kept us awake with his squeaky little exercise wheel. He was cute , affectionate and even got loose once or twice, forcing us to move appliances to rescue him. He liked riding in the car He'd sit on the dash board and look out the window. One day he seemed not quite himself, and as a couple of days went by, we became so concerned, we took him to the vet . The vet looked him over and informed us he was dying of old age!He was only 2 yrs old! We were crushed ! That little guy brought us love and laughter and losing him was for us a tragedy. We held each other and sobbed. We had him buried at Bubbling Wells Pet Cemetery . It actually made our love for each other stronger. Seems funny . But we made 47 years together . Having Squeaky in the beginning ,and all we did after had helped to bond us . I still remember the little handful of joy
