How to Make a Kaytee Crittertrail Safe to Use | Munchie's Place

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In my previous video I was discussing how to repurpose Kaytee Crittertrails so they can be recycled instead of thrown away. They cannot be kept as main enclosures, but what do you do with them if you already have one? In this video, I discuss further on how to make a Crittertrail safe to use for travel or for holding for your species of animal.

When you first saw the cage did you think it was for a toy like I did? Most kids would be excited to see they got a hamster cage, I looked at it a bit confused trying to grasp what I was looking at. It says a lot when an 11 year old me can't comprehend those cages being meant for anything but a toy. The bright colors, the design and the size of the cage didn't scream "animal enclosure!"

I went into PETCO for the first time in years last weekend. It was so sad- not just the animals being sold, but the UNSAFE products! For sand, they only had calcium sand that was dyed. Absolutely nothing natural! Even wheels, none were large enough for their syrians, which were the only species of hamster in the store! I even seen there guinea pigs with no hay- an employee came up to me because I was taking pictures of them and asked me to leave. I gladly did because there wasn't anything I could do about it. Miss_Perfection yeah it really sucks but at least we can utilise this time to research about pet care rather than rushing into buying one .about the cage size for mice 360 sq inches is ok bigger is always better but people usually manipulate the studies done and conclude that mice should live in tiny inclosures while the studies actually mean that a big cage can keep a mouse happy although you need to fill it completely with enrichment.I often see people with 40 gallon breeder tank which is a great size but only with a wheel ,chews food and water no enrichment of any sort! It really bugs me that small animals like hamsters mice and rats are thought of as “disposable items” or “pests” just because they dislike them I am not a big fan of rats but I still would treat them right?!!?

I recently rescued a dwarf hamster off of craigslist though I wasn't planning on owning a hamster for a while. He's supposedly only 6 months old and he was kept in the first cage you showed. Alas I don't think they cared much or maybe stopped caring. I didn't get a name and they sure wanted their money's worth. I have him in a semi larger enclosure for now until the one I ordered comes in. But at least that horrid cage can have some use hopefully. I did reuse the food bowl which was horribly chewed up at the bottom, surprising right....but it's now a water dish and he is just fine with that. Might keep the tube since he's small enough as well. He's pretty nippy in his enclosure still though but that's not surprising either since he was stuck in such a small cage before and not a single chew toy or whatnot in sight.

I would suggest the Prevue 528 cage, which you can get from Amazon. You can also look on KZread to find tutorials on making bin cages which is a more budget friendly option that is also humane as long as your cage meets the bare minimum of 450 sq. Inches but bigger is always better

You can make cages out of plastic storage bins! You’d want to attach chicken wire to the top of the bin with zip ties, which you’d probably need help from an adult with, but it’s relatively cheap! I saw somebody recommend the prevue 528 which is an awesome cage but it’s a bit pricey when could make your own DIY cage instead :-) hamsters need 450 square inches of space minimum, and many plastic storage bins meet that!
