Not necessarily. Most people need to plug their electric bass into an amp, but some acoustic basses exist that function like an acoustic guitar

I have no idea what 1st or 2nd position is. Perhaps you should cover that here rather than glossing over it if you are going to spend that much time on it

I see people shredding on bass, guess they are going through modes as their fingers never seem to hit a wrong note?

I believe so. And they are using all kinds of intervals and grooves within those modes of the key the song is in. And, sometimes playing a mode that doesn’t line up with the root note of the chord that the guitar player or keyboard player is playing at a particular moment.
