I don’t think they are. It’s not like Nike or Adidas is slapping their label on regular, everyday items and charging astronomical prices like Supreme. The authentic shirt can be thought of as a tool for athletes if they’re meant to help with their performance. There’s a lot of work and technology going into these shirts which justify the price. Great breakdown of the football/soccer shirts business, I feel like that’s an industry in and of itself.

So much so that I actually did not buy any modern Chelsea kit. I prefer the Yokohama and Samsung ones. There is a good way of supporting your club by buying a jersey without the ads, here's how. 1. Some Clubs offer "Euro" Designs of their jerseys, where there are no sponsors. 2. Buy Training or prematch jerseys. Most of them are ad free and even cost less

Yes but football shirts are not mostly about production costs, they are about recovering costs from the sponsorship to the club that gives them the right print those shirts in the first place. Those numbers are impacted by general inflation in addition to growth of demand. Remember most of the revenue of the sale of a shirt goes to the shirt company and not the club....that's cos the right to print those shirts have been paid for in advance. In essence you are paying the shirt company who already pre-paid your club (and not buying shirts will affect any future sponsorship value the club can get).

That's what I did, managed to get a home shirt in my size down from £70 to £40 because of it being an end of season sale, I don't mind paying that because that to me is what the shirt is actually worth and is usually the maximum I'm willing to pay.
I think I'd have less of a problem with football shirts if they hadn't changed to releasing a new home shirt every single season. Back in the '90s in the UK, the system for most clubs was a home shirt (and sometimes the away) would be used for 2 seasons which means the kit would at least have a little more value.
@yannick245

True it started at the beginning of the 00's. I believe until 04 Bayern Munich, for example, changed their home kit only every two years. The same goes for Dortmund. From 04 on, we had a new jersey every season. My favorite jerseys until today are the _"Total 90"_ ones by Nike. The national teams playing in theses kits had a circled in number on the front of the jersey, instead of the sponsor. They can be seen in the famous Nike ad, were Portugal played Brazil, with an endless number of top-stars: *kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGalmZlpY5Cvdso.html* I had a Tomáš Rosický one. But I'm sure it wasn't a replica. It had all the features of the original one the players wore on the pitch. I had _"Total 90"_ shoes and a yellow/purple ball too. The ball was indeed a replica! I just was in love with that style. Now I haven't bought a jersey for over ten years and I also don't play myself anymore.

The same authentic shirt of Manchester United 2022 season would cost 10 pounds at the maximum if you are able to procure one from the country which produces it. One important cost that wasn’t included is before the actual production of the shirt there are people that design and develop these kits. There’s time that goes into planning and researching fabrics, patterns, fits, performance etc. All the people involved on that end get paid, so that cost needs to be factored in as well.

@@jantelopez5626 yes of course it’s not a big cost just based off of the large volume of products being created ( I know because I used to be an a apparel designer). Don't know how much I buy all this. The fact you can buy shirts from DH Gate which are extremely high quality (virtually indistinguishable from authentics) at a fraction of the price shows it can be done. If working with retailers means a commitment to double the price so you don't undercut one another then don't do it- sell exclusively in Adidas Stores, club shops and online, that way you could immediately cut €40 from the cost of each shirt, sell a lot more and close demand for the illegal DH Gate trade.

Hmmm…in my experience they’ve always been pretty expensive. At least in the US. It was hard to get jerseys because there was no real market and demand was limited to those small soccer loving populations, so everything was imported. I’m talking since the mid 90’s. Even after the US World Cup. And soccer specialty stores were limited. Being of Mexican descent I grew up watching the Mexican league and again, those jerseys were imported and were always between $70 and $90 USD. MLS eventually emerged and they were also in the same range. I recall my parents not being able to afford them and if I ever did jet a jersey I would feel guilty. I got a Mexico ABA Sport jersey from 1996, right before the legendary 98 jersey. I regret not getting that 98 one now. But like I mentioned, the imports were expensive and so were the MLS ones. I also didn’t get the first LA Galaxy jersey because of the price. Eventually the market for soccer in the US grew and you would eventually have the chance of getting a previous season’s kit for $45 USD. Either way the story of soccer jerseys around the world is interesting. Awesome video.
I sent some jerseys from India to UK in February. The cost per piece, including shipping to UK; was 6 euros. It would come down to 4 euros if I shipped 10 at once. That's the scale of mark up, we're talking about!

And that's why a lot of fans (mainly southern Italian ones from Napoli and Palermo) just wait it out or buy the shirts after the new kit is released: usually the replica kits are worth way less when the new kit is released, so if you just wait until the next season (usually January or February) the older kit is a bargain to purchase because the retailers will have a rush to sell them to make more space for the "more demanded" new kits, while recouping some costs. :)

Not just Football, its every sport.
You failed to mention that wages have stagnated and in many cases not grown at all in most countries. This indeed means that football shirts are dollar for dollar more expensive than they were 30 years ago.
There are some changes going on in the breakdown of the price of a football shirt. Large companies, especially Nike and Adidas are trying to circumvent the brick-and-mortar store and smaller web stores by selling directly to the consumer. If you look at the breakdown you can see why: it makes up for a large part of the price, so there's a lot to gain for these companies.

You also have to count the cost of technology. Theses companies also spend a lot on R&D. For example, researching on materials such as recycled polyester, aerodynamic cut, where to place breathable holes, etc. It takes many years to craft and perfect it. They have to adjust it's cost somewhere.

Well researched and produced episode, guys!🙌🙌🙌🙌 Honestly, the only team shirt I would buy and wear is the current Nigeria 2018 world cup shirt! I really loved the unique design, and it seems fans love it too because it's sold out (in my size at least) EVERYWHERE! well, let me add that companies invest in designing and pay artists to come up with cool-looking shirts. so let's add that to the calculations maybe.

I still have the Liverpool kit from 2011, bought by my friends for my 21st birthday. I can't wear it now, but I still keep it though, for the memories lol

@@alemastro_ and it prove one thing. Those shirts prices are different at different places
I’ll take replicas at $40-$60 over paying for an “authentic” jersey at $140+
In game Major League Baseball Jersey cost up to $479. It is a lot for one Jersey But they’re the best Jerseys in all of sports in terms of their sewing detail and material used you’ll get your money’s worth. It gets more complements than a button down Gucci

Great vid :0) Well...I guess someone has to pay that £516m, given to Mbappe, for signing that new PSG deal... Has anyone noticed how PSG shirts have sky rocketed over the last 24 hours? Go to the PSG Superstore on line. A PSG 2022 shirt, on the 21st of May, ranged from between £42 and £64. On the 22nd of May, they now range from between £70 to £115. It is no wonder the game of Football is going to pot and more and more Fans are becoming disenchanted with it all.

@@ziko646 true...but then are not all top Clubs. Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool. Man Utd, PSG, Juventus, Real Madrid, Barcelona and others, all have their underhanded dealings and way of doing things. It is what the top Clubs in the top Leagues do and it is usually the Fans that suffer the most, in one way, or the other.

@@ziko646 I cannot argue with that and you are spot on. Lets face it, what they have given Mbappe is absolutely mind boggling, not to mention ridiculous. I know it is all about the revenue he can bring into the Club, etc, but all that just for kicking a bag of air about a field. What Mbappe has been given, along with Messi, Neymar and a few others, is all that is wrong in the game today. It finished being a sport the day Football sold its soul to the Devil, also known as Sky and BT and is now just business and a Playground for the Mega Rich. Clubs get richer and the Fan gets poorer and it is the Fan that suffers. I treated my Grandson for his 16th Birthday and took him to the CL Final, as he is a Liverpool Fan, just a shame for him they lost, but not my fault lol.... O...M...G...I wished I had promised him a house! By the time it was all totted up, for the two of us, with fair, travel, hotel for the night, food, etc, etc, it came to nearly £3,000...for one day, to watch a bleedin football game. That is what it has come to. We were talking to others and they ended up paying even more. The way Football is going, the ordinary, hardworking terrace Fan is not going to be able to go and watch football games anymore, not in the top Leagues at least. Yes, PSG have gone beyond the limit and you are spot on, but the whole of top Football is also going beyond the limit.
Nah, we're getting ripped off.
In vietnam, the friend of my friend's dad owns a boots factory for nike. Some of the stuffs that doesn't pass the QC are sold to my friend's dad, they'll fix it and sell it for 200 bucks
A textile company just came to my school for recruiting. One of the main products of them is the football shirt. That's interesting.
Walked into a sports direct today to look at the new Liverpool shirt. £75 walked straight out. It should be capped at £50. £75 for a football shirt is absolutely ridiculous for something you will wear for a season. A Liverpool shirt in 2010 was £40. Edit: I ended up just buying this years shirt as it’s a really nice shirt but £75 lmao
In Indonesia made in Thailand shirt was the best choice in quality and comfort to buy not to expensive and accessible because it's bit complicated to spend 90€ just like a month salary just for shirt
