I understand why the DFB choose Nike given the much better offer. However as a German I think it’s quite sad that we have two of the three biggest sports apparel manufacturers in our country and yet our most important national team is going to be supplied by an American company. Let’s hope Adidas or Puma will have a better offer in 2034.

I'm supprised that no one is mentioning that Nike is positioned very well to become a monopoly in the sports ware space, and that outcome will definitely not be positive for the fans or the teams, and organisations that they sign contracts with. We can already see the ways in which Nike has used their position to dilute and damage the images of sports teams and leagues in the US. The abysmal NBA jurseys for example, which are poor quality and suffer from frequent tears, and where they have flooded the market with so many alternate and anniversary jerseys. I hope that we can all see and notice the ways in which Nike has already begun cutting corners and that they will only do so more agrresively once they control even more of the market.

„Three more world cups followed in adidas shirts“ That is not true. The 75 years partnership refers to the shoes. Until 1963 leuze was supplying the kits then umbro. Erima was supplying the kits for the world cup 74 and 78 while adidas gave them jackets shoes…, but adidas bought erima in 1976. The stripes and logo are only on the shirts since 80s. Its because of that common misconception that the whole thing was such a big deal in tbe first place.

You are right, would have been better to say "three more world cups followed with Adidas as a partner". Thanks for the correction :)
@mrwest_1
Ай бұрын
Before the 1980s, Adidas was not the official kit supplier for World Cup teams. Teams like West Germany wore Adidas shoes and had Adidas as a sponsor, but other companies supplied the kits. In the 1970s, Adidas acquired Erima, which supplied kits for the World Cup before Adidas branding became prominent on shirts. In the 1980s and onwards, Adidas began to feature its logo and the iconic three stripes on official team shirts for the World Cup. Adidas' involvement with the World Cup spans many years, but the distinct branding with the three stripes and logo on team shirts started to consistently appear from the 1980s onwards. Prior to this, while Adidas may have been involved through footwear and sponsorship, the kits were not branded as Adidas.

Then pay for it. This is not anything new, Adidas got away with not paying market rate for so long, they almost lost the German team in the early 2000’s. Should have been prepared for a battle like this. Unless they don’t have the money, which is apparently the case.
The problem is Brazil had some of the biggest stars in the game during those commercials. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo etc. Germany doesn't have those kind of names. Also, after that WC win in 2002 they haven't fielded a side that looks like it could win a WC. So they got money and now nearly 20 years of an average national team. Their best result in that time period is coming in 4th at the 2014 tournament in their own country.

But we can't ignore the fact that they are lackluster in signing player, even Nike got Sabrina from WNBA and the fact that now LeBron is more cemented to Liverpool. Adidas can't even signed a former NBA Finals MVP and European superstar Nikola Jokic (he recently signed with a Chinese company 361⁰ after his contract with Nike), I imagine European would be crazy if Jokic had a signature shoes with the biggest European sports brand. Heck, even European stars are with another brand such as Giannis (Nike), Luka (Jordan), Markkanen (Nike), Sabonis (Nike), Gobert (Nike) and even the rookie sensation Wembanyama (Nike). Double plot twist, Germany loses their cheap, reliable, energy, decommissions their nuclear facilities and signs a deal with a Middle Eastern country that has proven spotty human rights, for LNG. All because many Germans still hold Anti American views as we stopped your crazy, zealous, grandparents 8 decades ago. We propped up your post war economy and yet you are too proud to buy American LNG or soccer tshirts, but had no qualms buying from the country that annihilated your wack 6th Army. Reading the comments, it seems like many of you still hold similar ideas as those losers in the 6th.
I dont think this saga is over. The new deal basically starts in 2027 (a very long time from now lol, a lot of things will happen before then) Adidas could easily have this deal questioned in the legal sphere. Backed by German political bigwigs and other influential people, i wudnt be surprised this nike deal gets terminated before they even have the chance to put the swoosh logo on the classic German shirt.

In this respect, the DFB did not behave respectfully towards Adidas. However, I don't think Adidas would have made a counteroffer that was twice as high as their own (55 million). Adidas was probably too sure because of the long time with the DFB.
Adidas took the DFB for granted and believed that Germany will never accept an offer from a rival (even Puma) even if the rival offer is financially better for 'national pride' reasons. The offer Nike had put on the table was significantly bigger than what Adidas was wanting to shell out and was impossible to refuse. We should not forget the underhanded tactics like government officials intevening to push the DFB accepting offer from Adidas which were of LESSER value than what Nike was offering. This is karma years in the making and Adidas can blame no one but themselves - the DFB did nothing wrong.

Interesting to see shirt sales and how the public reacts to these jerseys, Nike is playing with fire here..
Fantastic storytelling, thank you Athletic Interest! :)

After seeing the new international kits, everyone should cut their ties with Nike. adidas kits >>>>>
Germany: We're dropping Adidas. Nike CEO: Just do it.
Nike saw the opportunity to sponsor the DFB with twice the budget Adidas was willing to pay and they won. Nike may not be the best in kit designs but they're kings in storytelling and marketing for their athletes and teams.
Great video as always really enjoyed the content keep going i would buy adidas kit as a fan better than nike because of bad kit design but nice video😍❤️
Its quite Disrespectful to Adidas what Germany has done. But recent years have shown Germany cares more about Profits and political messaging than tradition and performance on the Pitch Wiedereinmal enttäuscht uns "Die Mannschaft "

Quite the opposite, I think. Adidas has let a bunch of shirt deals with smaller to medium clubs (also a significant amount of german teams) run out and decided to only pursue the biggest in the business. This is fine in itself but then offering less than half of what your main competitor does, is a thing I just can't wrap my head around. Besides, the only political messaging brought into that decision is coming from people who would rather want the DFB to have stayed with Adidas. The change to Nike was a sound financial decision without political implications
Call me a Boomer but this is a bigger disgrace to German Football than our downfall after the 2014 World Cup. Germany and Adidas belong together like Christmas and Santa Claus, Tom and Jerry, Phineas and Ferb. We wouldn't be in this situation if the DFB wouldn't have blown out hundreds of millions Euros for a prestige HQ nobody needs. That's just besides the fact that Nike Jerseys are uninspired, soulless trash of awful quality.
Umbro was still in the early 90s the biggest supplier for football kits worldwide, not Adidas who was second. Things changed in 94.
Make a video on barcelona and nike tense relation
Great pronunciation of the German player names. It's minor, but very much appreciated.
Red Bull and Formula 1? Dude there are people over 25 who remember F1 just fine without Red Bull

Yeah. End of an Era 😢 What if we see a reunion? Good Question thrown by Athletic.
Ive talked with many germans who said they will not buy the nike kit. Which is why you're seeing surge in sales of this year adidas germany kit.
Oversea fan of Germany, Bayern and Adidas here. I was greatly upset at first But since i learned that Nike offered much more, i'm all down for this now. Change - fresh start could be what Germany NT needs most right now (Bayern need this too) and oh, the recent ruckus about the away trikot didn't help adidas at all.

Okay "Field marshall" Friedrich Paulus. Why not support a company from a country that helped prop up your economy after many horrible decisions made by your grandparents. You were cool buying cheap Russian fossil fuels that financed Putins war machine, but not cheap, made in Bangladesh sweat shops, by an American company owned by liberal democrats?

Adidas also lost Real Madrid but, it's incomparable to lost jersey contract with German national team.
LA Olympics 1984. The US team wore Kappa. Wonder how Nike felt.
Worth noting that Nike recently lost the Barcelona deal (Puma winning that one), and hence can afford to overpay to acquire a European football powerhouse in DFB.

you're the goat channel on economics in commercial athletic competition
These companies have trained the masses well if they actually want ads on their jerseys. Fans of the NHL resent the intrusion of corporate logos but Euros apparently are fine with crass commercialism.
I am actually looking forward to this. Guess Nike won't screw up their very first Germany jersey so I am excited with what they will come up
When you hear about F1, the first thing that comes to your mind is Ferrari, not Red Bull.
I recognise money is the ultimate driver in this move, however, sometimes clubs/countries and kit makers can only go so far and as a result designs become either uninspiring or unconvincing. I noticed this with France and their relationship with Adidas. Through the 70s and 80s they had some of the most iconic kits and the 1998 strip is a classic. From 98 they had so many nice looking kits but none of them made an impact. They just seemed to come and go. I don't think France have had a classic kit since they went to Nike, however, all of the designs to press have shaken things up. The kit hasn't been all about how you move around rigid white lines and where you place the red or the white on the kit. Remember in recent years France have had purely blue tops. Two other teams that could do with a shake up are Spain and Brazil. Spain's kits with adidas have become very pedestrian. I don't think Brazil have had a classic Nike kit since the early 2000s. The truth is it's all about the money. Take England, they are never going back to Umbro.....and Umbro aren't even an English company any more.
Well, it means i won't spend money for a new kit anymore
This was pushed for economic reasons and one in particular was the poor showing of the German national team in big tournaments.. this resulted in lower income and sales of merchandise and the DFB I think had to find an economic solution and went for NIKE. It’s all about the money ;)
well this deal was apparently not really carried out good for the DFB since they didnt even talk to addidas that nike pays and 100mil if they can match it. And here in Germany theres no characterisation of gen Z with nike. Sure some wear it but most get addidas thats germany. I´m even willing to bet that there will be many who boycott the new jerseys just because its not addidas which will be ME included. The DFB has a money problem and for years now try to get more lucrativ on german sport always with talks bout should we lift the 50 +1 rule and crap like that but then fail with the national team management. Thats why nobody supports their desicion.
I thought it was because of the controversy with the #4 on the German kit, especially if you custom order a kit through Adidas with the #44….
Those who thought there is something like loyalty or faithfulness in business are naïve. It's always only about making money.
6:26 I like how the US flag in the background becomes the three stripes of Adidas. Props to the editor.

Wait till there is a crescent moon on the German flag. How many national flags have you guys had in the last 150 years? How many are rightfully illegal to display....
England was also with Umbro a British brand until 2013 and some moments with other British brands prior, then in 2013 the signed with nike a non national brand.

Now DFB has to contend with the entire portfolio of Nike. They are gonna see how quickly they'll be put on the back burner among all the other teams vying for marketing time in Nike

Great video and great points. But i dont see what the fans would have from a different sponsor. Shirts arent gonna look much better and the sport wont be played differently.... Its surely lucrative for dfb and nike tho
Having Germany and Brazil under your belt is a huge flex
Adidas makes 'affordable' apparel and footwear. Nike makes better apparel and footwear, although in recent years it seems all major apparel and footwear makers seem to be opting for less quality materials (think Nike Metcon 4s versus current Metcon 9s). It seems that Nike just has more cash to spend than Adidas and Adidas is reluctant to spend what cash it has.
