The 2022 Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 15-30 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen heads the field, which includes stars such as 2020 Champion Fabiano Caruana and Anish Giri.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. If there is a tie for first place the top two after tiebreaks then play a 2-game blitz (5+3) playoff and, if still tied, an Armageddon game. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. I just spent some time looking at this with the engine and the intricacies of this endgame are crazy! For example Re4 immediately without Re7+ seems to be a draw, because you have to force the black king away from controlling e8 so you can hide your king from checks on e8 later while controlling the queening square, and the black can’t play kf8 to control e8 because that allows white to gain an important tempo with a check on the back rank later, which slows white black’s counterplay with the passed b pawn just enough so that white can promote first. Even so, there are some lines black has to avoid where Re7+ can be played later instead which win for white; there are also some lines where the b pawn can be sacrificed for a draw... there are so many intricate ideas and it’s really hard to understand why they work in some lines and in others they don’t, when it seems like there’s no difference. Even the engine has to be put on high depth to correctly evaluate many of the lines. No wonder even Magnus couldn’t find the win here.

Excellent analysis. Nice to feel I instinctively spotted Re7+, - but without realising the need to return to e5! Under pressure, I'd probably have gone for black's a pawn but I now realise this would result in a draw at best, and only if white is able to avoid the exchange of rooks. If rooks are exchanged, it's surely a loss with white's King stranded from the remaining pawns.

For Magnus it's actually easy to understand. He is better at endgames (not in this very specific case), so trading down, simplifying the situation and beating the opponent there are pretty common for him from what I've seen.

This is why machines are better than humans at this. With enough computing power the machine can discover all these obscure lines. Same happened with AlphaGo against Lee Sedol.

Nowadays machines do find some insane lines, but actually (weirdly enough) most of alphago’s wins against Lee sedol were very positional. And the one game (game 4) with massive complications in the center, alphago lost.

@@alanhuang3005 Hmm I did not know that. I need to re-visit the match. I do remember seeing one game where it looked like the machine was playing moves that didn't make sense to the human observers however it had found the one line where it had a very narrow win which was enough for the machine.
