The 2021 FIDE World Cup is a 206-player knockout taking place in Krasnaya Polyana, near Sochi, Russia from July 12 to August 6. The prize fund is almost $1.9m, with $110,000 for the winner, while the finalists also qualify for the 2022 Candidates Tournament. The top 50 players, who include world nos 1 and 2 Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, are seeded directly into Round 2.
Each match consists of two classical games where the players have 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment from move 1. If tied, a playoff will be held on the 3rd day. There are two 25+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 10+10 games, then two 5+3, and finally an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers are allowed until after move 30. Official website: worldcup.fide.com

For those of you who don't know, the quote "a knight is a knight" comes from none other than Mikhail Tal, who said "Fischer is Fischer, but a knight is a knight" in response to Bobby Fischer saying he wanted to play the Women's World #1 and would win even when giving her knight odds.

Fantastic! I thought it was another grand master, namely Chuck Norris. Or was it Bruce Lee? I was not sure. But now I know. Just kidding. Yes, now when you mentioned it, I remember I read it somewhere. Bobby was always such a modest guy. That's why Russians loved him so much!

A lot of very incisive calculations from Duda brought a well deserved Victory. But very good game for both of them. If Vidi5 had just one ‘free’ move during the end game; ah, but that was Duda’s calculations !!

I am full of emotions after today...." I think now or never with Magnus. If anyone can beat the world champ on this torunament it gotta be our man Duda! :)
