Thanks for the memories about playing 5-minute chess with Roman Dzendzichashvili and Walter Browne back at Hardcastle's in Berkeley, CA!

Walter and Roman would occasionally show up at Hardcastle's Cafe in Berkeley, California to play 5-minute games during the early seventies. Sometimes, after Hardcastle's closed for the night, a few of us diehards would adjourn to Walter's apartment to play chess until the sun came up. Walter's new bride was most understanding of our bleary-eyed chess antics on those all-nighters. Roman and I always played 5-minute chess for quarters; but, as he started dominating he would spot me a couple minutes each game...LOL. He was the best at 5-minute! After I acquired a beautiful Heuer aluminum-cased analog chess clock, I loaned it to Roman so he could attend a chess tournament somewhere. Turns out that he took it back to New York and it was not returned to me until several months later. Still have that bullet-proof clock! And many thanks to the others below who commented with just enough information to jog my memory about those great old days of playing with the boys at Hardcastle's.

GM Roman Dzindzichashvili is kwown for his knowledge in ... irregular openings ... and as a chess character. I had one book he authored in the era of the 90's where databases were not on the market. From his pecular style he got sometimes the "djin" nickname. Checkout Djin opening.
