Man, tell me chess isn’t the cruellest and most beautiful mistress an unlucky man can fall in love with! Nepo is honestly an artist, and this is like an accidental masterpiece, and to be on the brink of a HAT TRICK of candidates tournaments has got to be unprecedented, surely, especially in the modern game. But O man, though a BIG fan of Nepo I have to feel for Vidit, what a heart breaking, soul crushing way to lose. As for ‘too many lines’ Anton, cut it out, yours is still the best channel on Chess Tube, and I could have you show me lines all bloody day, really, a brilliant analysis and commentary on one of the games of the year so far!

And then played at 95.1% accuracy to convert a winning advantage that was one wrong move away from a draw until almost the last moves. Let’s agree to disagree. I call that artistic. You want to call scientific precision artistic go watch an engine play!

I always think he should show more lines. Sometimes he skips some lines that look very tempting to me because there's some tactic lurking that is obvious to Antonio but not to most of us viewers.

Indian here and our players have played fantastically. But it would be a story for the ages that there was a man who took blows but never gave up, won candidates thrice in a row and finally became World Champion. Nepo deserves his title shot and the championship at the moment.

Nepo is the master of moves that few others seemingly ever play: the "good enough" move. While others burn through their time looking for the best move in the current position, Nepo seems willing to play moves that may not be best, but they're not losing immediately. He manages to survive from one crisis to another but he remains ahead on the clock. Then the opponents (except for those named Magnus) are the first to make serious mistakes once they get into deep time trouble. From what I see, he's emerged with three wins and salvaged three draws that way in this tournament already. He reminds me of what Voltaire said, "The best is the enemy of the good."

Yeah easy to play with famous thermos or other trick . Nepo was 8th in tata steel nothing could show , was beaten every second game by low rated players through out year then suddenly started to beat everyone . You need to be dumb not to see . Anyway he will be made a world champion this time . What a sick cheap world .

@@sekainiheiwa3650 You don't have to imagine microchips hiding in his tea to explain why he overperforms in the candidates (his somewhat imprecise bluffing style oriented around time-management does not look very engine-like to me). I think at this point in his career, his only significant goal is to become WC, so he prefers to hide his openings preparation during lesser events to surprise his opponents when it really matters.

Artist and not a butcher! It's because of these moves chess is so beautiful! Even Vidit's bold king walk really made the game so beautiful!

Nepo got a little lucky this round, but he is such a beast in the candidates. I mean, he's never not been winning or tied for winning in his entire candidates career. He is such a talented defender and attacker, it's really a joy to see him play. Thanks for the breakdown Agadmator!

I disagree that Nepo got lucky. Similar things happen far too often when his opponents are under time pressure that it must be because of his strategic use of time, not luck.

Vidits main enemy is his clock

Poor Vidit. He is a true gentleman of the game, sad to see him break like this.

It can’t be that sad for Vidit after defeating Nakamura twice in this tournament.

Vidit is a good player but he lacks composure and killer instinct which Pragg and Gukesh seems to have..He is very very emotional player.. Whenever he loses advantage his emotion gets better of him everytime.

Great game by both players. Really enjoyed that one. The way Nepo kept his cool against Vidit's pressure was amazing. Vidit was against Nepo and time pressure. Hard to find best moves under those conditions.

Respect to agadmator for clearly sacrificing his sleep routine to cover these games. Love your videos, man. Renewed my chess interest completely!

The more lines the better, there are always interesting posibilities, even more for us mortals that dont see 20 moves lines.

Pragg was not disappointed this much because he was not winning way back in his gane with hikaru..but definitely vidit knew he was winning some where and he missed it

Thank you Agad. Watched the game off Lichess. Kinda followed near the end but definitely did not see the why of the "only move that does not lose the game" that Vidit missed. Perhaps he was upset by that. Still in the picture, in the beginning, and in the video in the end Vidit regards Nepo with respect, someone he can learn from and so its not too bad. Shaking his head in the end as if to say "cant do this" i am sure if he had the time he would have found the right move. Also it seems possible what the origin of the famous Magnus effect is, as "young" Magnus had a very hard time beating Nepo and eventually becoming world champion. Certainly upsetting, those moments when you cant tell u have an advantage. Anyway yes, its true anything can still happen. I think Nepo might not be too happy with settling for draws as we near the end of the bouts, still, could he have pushed for wins in the earlier games? It is certainly exciting for chess, a tight race. May the best player win. PS: Rumor: the only way Magnus will come back for the title, is if Nepo wins it.

I don't know man, it seemed to me that Nepo was just very much NOT satisfied with his own game. He kept shaking his head and making faces when he was waiting to sign the scoresheet. Right after the game when Vidit did show him h5 move Nepo told him "I misplayed it terribly". I mean he knew that he could have lost this game. Nepo didn't show it while playing of course, but after Vidit left the table it just came out pouring.

Best game of the tournament so far.

It is hard sometimes. You work for it, you deserve to win, you get so close you can feel you are in the right path, but then your opponent gets lucky a few times, manages to survive and then you blow it up and lose. Unfortunately, not only does this happen in sport, but in life over and over. If you don't seize your opportunities and finish the job when you have the chance you will pay the price.

This game kept me on the edge of my seat until the last second. Thinking about making an analysis of it too. ❤

I saw that H5-6 move for Vidit, as winning the game, but very risky, as usual Adag explains it so well that it almost convinces me that there is nothing more to be done at this point, problem is a number of computer moves in the making that can quite be missed. Beautiful game by both I will certainly rewatch over and over.

Thriller! This candidates is going right down to the line

I was explaining to my roommate who doesn’t play chess that if Vidit had won here against the front runner, he would have even had chances at potentially winning the tournament (with a lot of luck). It makes sense that he was so emotional, as a loss here means his chances are now 0.

This game reminded of some of the games between Kramnik-Kasparov in their Championship Match where the Queens were off the board and square control was of prime importance. Nepo is now like Alekhine in that, as Alekhine once said, you have to beat me in the opening, then the middlegame and then the ending. He seems to rise up to time pressure better than others in Classical play.

What an epic battle. Wow.

What a game - and Agad, please don't listen to anyone who says "we don't want to follow complicated lines or have long videos." The beauty of chess is so often what was possible on the board, rather than what actually happened. And no one else explains so clearly to amateur players what might have happened and what top grandmaster can see

We need to see medo

Even more powerful than the h5 pawn, was Knight d6 when the rook was guarding the d file. It would have forced a knight - bishop trade as the rook was hanging. Instead Vidit moved the rook to e1, a move that I can not comprehend but three minutes is three minutes and my brain was probably over the boiling point with only that time left and I would have probably made some other mistake. Nepo dodged every attack from Vidit and it could still have been a draw even with Vidit rook wreaking havoc behind enemy lines...

#suggestion can you turn on setting which allow us to see move signs, like which are good, best or brilliant moves

The many lines are enjoyable.

I can sit through levy blitz through most games but your reviews are always the best, showing the ideas behind every move and looking at different variations in the position much love big man you're bringing chess to the people

Might be harsh to say, but Nepo plays the chess villain role pretty well. Not that he's mean or anything but he's not the most personable chap. A fierce competitor who regularly brutalises even the best players out there. So dominate at these candidate tournaments.

I suppose the guy we should be rooting for now is Abisov. Just one victory in 14 tries would make these last few weeks all worthwhile for him.

Watching Nepo play this match in the live and how he sits a trap for Vidit twice without loosing his cool to switching this game from a loss to a draw and then to a decisive win is a true master piece

Thriller of a game, in the endgame part at least. After the game Vidit did show Nepo the h5 move (after Rb3), he probably found it at some point after it was no longer an idea. And Nepo said "I misplayed it terribly". That was all their interaction though, not much of an analysis. Nepo was obviously not satisfied with his game. Ir was rather clear while he was waiting to sign the scoresheets.

Vidit played pawn to e4... and it was at this point that we have an entirely similar game. HEHEH

I was watching this game and was sure it would be drawn, and for what ever reason instead of trading everything off, Vidit looked like he almost wanted to lose with that blunder.

I watched this game live and it was incredible,Ian made the best and the worst moves and got a win, incredible fight from visit and although I'm happy for Ian it was heartbreaking at the end when vidit lost 😔 respect to all these players it's such a hard place to be in during these matches 🙏

Nepo has decidedly earned my respect since his showing in last year's world championship. This brings me to wonder how closely Ding is following the current match-ups.

Gukesh is the surprise of the tournament so far. With three rounds to go, a single stumble by Nepo could make all the difference.

The endgame was crazy

I watched the livestream from @9:00 on. I can't calculate at all, but intuitively I felt that it would be totally hopeless for White to attempt to defend the A and B files. I sensed such an attempt would either result in a pawn queening or the sacrifice of a piece to stop it. I was all for White going for H5 -- not because I I could calculate that this would succeed, but because I was so convinced that defending the A and B files was utterly hopeless. I guess my intuition was superior to Vidit's calculation!

Brutal. Nepo's time management is definitely his greatest strength. With the exception of Magnus, everyone gets into time trouble against Nepo and loses games they otherwise could have won. Ding too lost games against Nepo due to time trouble in the last WC.

The pain and frustration of Vidit really came across in that video! I can understand why Magnus isn't keen on defending his title year after year!

My learnings from this game is that one engine line that had White winning after passing two pawns the black king can't defend from promoting. Whites only goal should've been to trade down on the queenside and then start pushing and racing pawns. I think Vidit just got too bogged down with endless calculations and the stress of playing against a competitor like Nepo.

Same thing happened to Nepo vs. Ding. What comes around goes around in the world of chess. Congrats Nepo!
