I'm not always a fan of engine games when stockfish spots a 40 depth tactic and wins 2 pawns then grinds the opponent down to a tablebase position.. but when leela is able to play a positional game, favors mobility over pieces or pawns, completely forgoes king safety, it can really produce beautiful games.

This game is one of the most beautiful pieces of brutality ever seen in chess. The bishop and knight are like two mafiosi stuck in prison whilst their cartel gets destroyed by a rival.

  • 2 жыл бұрын

In chess, at the starting position, every pawn is defended, this position is extremely unbalanced as the G pawns are extremely week and Leela, as white, can pounce on it right away, with a mate threat as a bonus. Black has to start out and waste tempi defending it. The only viable way was the queen, which lead to even more lost tempi moving the queen around. Try to defend it with a bishop or a knight is even worse

I actually wonder whether this game is less "beautiful engine play" but rather proof that some chess960 positions are so unbalanced that perfect play from move 1 will always lead to a win for white, combined with the deadly ability of engines at identifying these weaknesses. How could black have prevented this lock on the corner pieces without giving up other advantages to white? Was this position played multiple times by both engines and both sides, and did one find a response that did not lead to an auto loss? Because almost everything seems forced here.

While, on the other hand, wins by pure neural network can be undetstood. Look at this game, you understand easily why white is better being a piece down for most of the game. There is no agenda. Most players use SF to refute atacks or to find the only winning move in late/end-game, SF is by far the best for that. But Leela/Ceres is the best in early/mid-game in really complicated positions. It's amazing how Leela's first move was to get rid of the liability of the bishop and knight in the corner by developing the knight. There's no way to know Leela's logic, but given that Leela generally tries to improve its weakest pieces I wouldn't be surprised if it saw the liability from the very beginning.
