Magnus plays a lot more of this romantic style chess in blitz, that's for sure, and also since he's retired from the championship circuit, he's even been a little more ballsy in classical I think. I don't think he's as protective of his rating or anything, because I think he said that he's essentially given up on trying to get to 2900. He just seems like he's out there having fun, and he's playing some of the best chess of his life.

When C19 happened, and all top 100 played each other online, I think for a lot of chess players that psychological barrier "I'm playing Magnus/Nepo/AnyTopGM face to face for the first time" had a positive effect. Imagine if Gukesh played TopGMs only once or twice before Candidates tournament. I don't think he would have even qualified.

There are some human traits that refuse to go, obviously I mean the negative ones. They reemerge, in every subsequent era. I can draw the analogy to Roger Federer in tennis. He absolutely hated the hawk eye reviews/challenges when they were introduced. He probably felt he had better chances of getting calls in his favour if it was left to the human umpires. Similarly it seems Carlsen may not have been very supportive of such a idea. They want to retain all their advantages probably. Including their aura, etc.

well its one thing for Magnus to take you to the forest, but quite another for Gukesh trying to defend like he is playing for the championship against Liren. After 33...bxh4, the "amateur" 27 depth stockfish gives my good instinct move the knight forward 34.Nc5+. Forces an expect exchange, but after that good luck for black to find rook to h7, which ok its logical, put the rook behind the passed pawn, but would Magnus play it? that pawn is 4 moves away from queening and 2 moves away from the uboat alarm to sound, Magnus might just have opted to keep the rook engaged somehow. For lower ranked players there were plenty of traps after attacking with the knight, even sacrificing it to the king. Anyway, perhaps when the best of the best offers you a forest, the worst thing you can do is chicken out, and why? Fear of losing? I would rather lose in a forest, than retreating. Oh well, perhaps Gukesh was shocked by that missed opportunity earlier on, was afraid to blunder near the end there, anyway, good game, at least Gukesh did pick up on Magnus's offer/mistake with the bishop earlier on (even if he maybe got overboard excited to follow up successfully), and that is not nothing.

Carlsen really ought to play the world championship. Instead of adding fuel to his own ego, "i can continue being considered the best player without playing the world championship" just play it man. If you are a gifted player, you ought to use it.

Yeah I was just like huh Gukesh hung that fork of queen and rook with bishop, but that's also why I'm not a 2800 player. Glad for the analysis there since I'm pretty sure all of us found the fork almost instantly.
