    Was the exchange sac simply a way of posing time-consuming problems for white, or did Magnus actually see at that point that the bishop was worth more than the rook? Very nervy/amazing, either way.

    probably a combination of both. It creates complications which are good for a rapid game. He probably figured he could prove his sacrifice by playing around keeping the bishops active and on the board.

    Combo of both... but. The bishop alone is not the reason. The bishop pair together makes it so. If Magnus doesn't have the other bishop, perhaps he looks for a different plan.

    Hi, in the kings indian defense rxe3 is actually a very common idea when whites bishop is on e3 and the white king is castled kingside. Ive played many games as white here, if you don’t know your lines things can get messy. Mainly you have to learn kh2 is critical rather than kh1 otherwise nh5 becomes a huge pain. Black definitely has compensation, but i dont mind playing this way as white. So to answer your question, the rook sac in the lines are already well known and magnus knows that. Of course move orders are different which is why its a new game but the ideas are the same.

  • @youngpatrick29

    @youngpatrick29

    Also i will add when hans played be3 he was also familiar with the ideas and was testing magnus to take it. And magnus accepted the challenge. Hans could’ve very easily played bf4, which is the more popular move and im guessing the engines top move.

    I found Ra6, didnt attempt to calculate the entire position out, but it looked like the best move to cut the king off on the sixth rank, setting up a potential mating net if he captures the h pawn and playing Kh2/Kg2. The move also came with tempo because it setup a discovery. The final sequence with Rc1 is incredible and only something someone could find in classical with a lot of time.

  • @youngpatrick29

    Magnus would likely and probably beat anyone he is above 200+ points in rating only down 2 points in the early game in rapid 7/8 out of 10. I think he would have lost to Nakamura if he tried the same sac but that's just my opinion.

    @rocchirodrigo Magnus is already about a piece better than most GMs before the game starts in most games how much more than a IM. Sure Magnus can't win every game but he will win majority of them and is clearly superior and he has proven that. Sure some IMs beat him like Rosen but it is very rare and we don't even know if Magnus is playing drunk on a lot of those online games, but I do agree it is never easy for him as they all put up a decent resistance against him.

  • @hsp6798

    @hsp6798

    @rocchirodrigo By the way the guy Magnus played is less than 300 point below Magnus in rapid. It really does make a huge difference. For example if you are a 1500 player, you will likely beat a 1150-1200 player 9/10 times and if down a couple points probably 6/7 out of 10 if it is early on. I don't see how Magnus could get away with that sac with any of the super Gms in rapid. I'm actually curious to know what the engine evaluates that sac at. I just get the feeling Magnus did it to prove he can be down 2 points (well really 1 point because that pawn was going to fall) and still win. Any other guy like Nakumura, Magnus best would probably be a draw after that sac.
