actually I always felt something was off about just learning what solvers do and mimicking it, I think deep down I was worried that learning solver lines would somehow detract from my own logic and intuition, so I didn't bother to do it. but this video was really awesome because what you're saying makes perfect sense and showcases how situational logic and creativity can beat humans using solver lines. And it also makes me feel like maybe I should study solvers as part of my poker strategy arsenal, but that i can bridge the gap between that and conventional play, getting the best of both worlds

Yes, it's always good to know what others are learning and understand the baseline correct play and adjust from there. Those solvers can bet super small on flop because they will defend turn and river perfectly. Many spots where it is +EV for a solver to call, but -EV for any human.

Does anyone know what Daniel means when he says solvers can make those small bets because they will play the turn and river perfectly ? What does perfectly mean in that context?
@joshuainwood9832

It means the solver will know exactly what bet size to do on the turn and river depending what cards come, a human won't be able to make those correct bets, calls, raises or folds so it turns a marginally plus ev spot into a big negative ev spot
i love how cohesive all of Daniels videos are, same theme through every video. The fundamentals of sizing and not blowing pots up and thinking ahead... good shit as always dnegs. thank you

i think it’s also important to note that the reason solvers do what they do is because they are trying to maximize chips against another unexploitable opponent. your opponents (especially at lower stakes) do not have GTO preflop or post flop ranges, and are more than likely not playing these ranges with GTO principles in mind. this is why i feel like it’s so important to understand not exactly WHAT the solver is doing in specific spots, but WHY. it’s like dnegs said, if you just mimic the silver with no plan other than that, you will be completely lost on later streets when you inevitably get called down by some rec who could have any two cards in the deck
@fenikstechnologies1173

Unless you have specific info on the player/s, it doesn't matter. GTO will still crush small stakes. Even if in a spot someone decides to call you down with ATC, while you lose in that specific spot, you win much, much more the other hands where their ATC either have to fold, or are dominated. Obviously, if you think someone is never folding, then you shouldn't bluff. But without specific information on a player or the pool specifically, you'll level yourself much more thinking you shouldn't play a solid theory based game at low stakes just because that person isn't playing a theory based game. Every time they deviate, they lose money. So you are already inherently exploiting them. Don't further exploit via deviating until you have an actual reason more than low stakes to do it.

My 'solver' experience is with chess solvers (chess engines like Stockfish). The difference between the abilities of humans to play 'like' a solver in chess and poker, as illustrated in this video, is interesting. Dneg: a poker solver will play perfect flop, river, turn- no human will. Yet in chess, where top players study in tandem with chess solver (which plays perfect early/mid/late game), there are multiple instances where humans play a 95%+ accuracy game (and not just rote-memorizing 60 engine moves (admittedly 10+ early moves of opening theory); also assuming the human doesn't cheat).

That's another thing about solvers. Sometimes people only look 1 level deep. They say "well why do I bet this and not this?" and then say "because look at their defending range" but then don't ask "why is that their defending range?". The programs do millions of iterations to determine this, at best humans can do 1 and *maybe* 2 iterations of this process.

Another place where chess and poker converge. There are a lot of solver recommended moves that put you in really bad positions if you don't play perfectly from that point forward. Impossible for any human to defend, but Stockfish gets an extra 0.1% of EV, so that's the recommendation.
I would have done the same because if bonomo hit that flop he's checking or putting in like 25 percent of his stack but the small 50k bet tells me if I put in 200 or 250 there's only 2 things he's doing there it is jamming or folding that's it ..spot on playing Daniel son...

Highly Enjoy these! I also (for my meagre Poker Brain) enjoy the corollary between your "contrarian" plays vs. GTO/Solver and what I'd call "Classic Big Stack" Tournament moves. Limp, into call a raise from a small stack, into check-raising a flop that missed a huge majority of small stack raise hands... Seems very aligned with somewhat traditional Big Stack Bully ideas, doesn't it, Daniel? Picking spots to manoeuver into some hands with a small stack, look for flops that miss the small stack, and take them away with some size bets?

bit like in chess.. there are some lines the computer takes, ... which would be just crazy for humans. Computers can defend extremely well, and play exactly the right moves, but a line which requires 20 only moves, is going to be way harder for you to play than for your opponent, even if 'on paper' (according to the computer) .. it's 'better'.
@SamAshworth91

That was the analogy that came to mind for me as well. You often hear chess players talk about how practical a position or move is, and how even if it isn't the outright strongest move, it is far easier to actually play and convert for a human.

I'm no pro, but I think poker is far too variable to accurately predict what to do with a solver. You never know what the next card will be, or what your opponent will do. If they're feeling lucky they'll call your massive pre flop bet with 7 2, beating your pocket As w trip 2s. You have to use intuition, and play the people as much as you play the cards. If you're at a table long enough and have demonstrated you're a good player with tight range, you can almost bluff with anything if you play it right.
Daniel, how much did you gain from poker by just being lucky? Is it an important part of your earnings? Just curious, really!
