After 27 years teaching I walk through the mall and recognize every face. Some I don’t remember their names but I get this horrible feeling come over me. I asked my colleague when will it end. He said at death.

@Mobius Strip - "Teacher" is just another word for "parent" these days... parenting ends at death, same for us. But you HAVE at least once had the opportunity for one of those former ragamuffins cone up to you and said, "I'm really sorry for the way I mistreated you," or "I learned the hard way that you were totally right!"

I used to tell the kids that they aren’t acting like they are in it to win it because I inevitably always had the kids who aspired to be professional sports players but couldn’t read or write. I had to turn into a coach in order for them to get themselves together. 🤦🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️😂😂

Just 2 days ago I told one of my (high school) students that I would email their coach about them. And they know I will. So he shaped up quickly (for that day at least!) 🤣

Okay, for those of you who haven't been using "electronic" referrals very long or "yet"... it's just another administrative ploy that originated from a "corporate/business world slight of hand" technique. It just makes it "appear" that the administration has reduced the number of referrals to the office. Think a minute... or maybe think of just 15 minutes... 15mins per referral. Now, multiply that by 3 for the administrator%%disciplne office assistant%%ISS Teacher chain-of-command. THEN multiply that whole process by the number of teachers who wrote referrals AT THE SAME TIME YOU DID... And you'll find it will take longer to get a child out of your classroom than any time before! The main office will look much more free of people milling around or waiting to be seen by an administrator - - but then this helps you how, in your classroom???

This strategy works. Tell them to put their heads down until you are ready for the next lesson also tell them you will call their mom or dad but have the cell phone visible if the grade level is k-2

Actually, I taught 18 yrs in a transfer HS in bed-stuy brooklyn and a softer approach actually works better. It also depends on the style of the teacher. But, hard kids are really soft inside and definitely get their feelings hurt but won’t let anyone see them punk out. Of course they behave like psychopaths sometimes but it’s best to try not to engage until they feel better (this may not happen until the next day). If you engage, they will take their rage and frustration out on you and completely disrupt the class. Softer approach and candy (even if he is a hulking 19 yr old) works better.

Unruly behavior will have you saying the most creative things to your students, 😂 #bars
