"Is this the same school where the internet doesn't work?" 😄😄😄. My oldest granddaughter started virtual school this week . 24 First graders, no one understands how to find/operate the microphone and camera buttons. Kids showing up late and they and their parents talking over the teacher. Somebodies big dog would bark every time it heard the teacher speak. The sound and picture kept messing up, and the internet connection on her end was awful. My granddaughter and I got the giggles over how ridiculous it was. So, yes, virtual school isn't ideal , BUT I am so thankful that our district did the safest and smartest thing for our children , teachers, and those around them.

A couple of things. Everyone is on mute during the lesson which should be no longer than 15 -20 minutes. Parents should not be talking or asking questions at all during the instructional time. Then students can break out into groups and come together at the end of the lesson. If the parents are doing all of the work, what is the point? The teacher should have office hours everyday to take specific questions. If there are 30 students in a class and 30 parents asking questions, how is any work going to get done? Send the teacher an email and questions will be answered when they can. Everyone has to work together..

You try to keep things simple for them and try to tell them not to stress, but they are kids and are still learning coping skills. You get a lot of emails from kids expressing stress or confusion. Most teachers are not going to tune that out but try to help. And then you don't really know if you are helping or not because everything is online. I would much rather be in front of kids teaching all day. If I am going to be on a computer all day, I might as well go back to my old job in IT and make more money. Great video. I was going crazy trying to get my child setup for school on his laptop. He isn't lying when he said "busy work". I was saying the same thing to my wife when I had to follow all of the redundancy. But some things I thought about over the past couple weeks getting used to the "new normal". How many teachers will be losing their jobs in the near future as people get used to online school whereas instead of one teacher having 20 children, now can manage 50-100. These teachers no longer have to live in the district and can live other places, so no need to have teachers live in the community. At how long before they figure out with technology, they can outsource the education to a lower paid teacher possibly even in another country? And that those that will continue to go to brick and mortar schools will be your problem children that are neglected at home by poor parents. Your good students will be distance learning. I have some empathy for you teachers here. Good luck!

What have we learned from "Distance Learning"? How little American parents are expected to do for their own child's education. If parents don't know how to help their child make a gmail account so they can login to Google Classroom please explain to me how they make a Facebook, Instagram and Tick Tok account that they have been posting on every day for the past 10 years???? A teacher in USA making an average income of $45 K /yr is expected to the following jobs: (reading , writing, math, science/computer science, history, art,/music , physical education) AND psycologist, social worker, marriage counselor, doctor, nurse, police officer, fund raiser, community organizer, best friend and confidant, hygenine specialist, food server, potty trainner, EMT, trip planner and tour guide, janitor, supplier of most school supplies , natural diaster trainner and rescuer, human shield, cirriculum specialist, party planner, chef, baker, drug counselor, sex educator, campus monitor, etiquette trainner, clergy, and NOW we can add tech support to the list. And teachers are expected to do this for 30 kids or many more everyday. Yet, they are not given any authority , money or respect to do all of these jobs even somewhat properly. And yet they try to do the impossible everyday for our kids. ALL Teachers should get paid at least $100k /yr. So why are they having to go on strike for things like a 3% pay increase? NUTS.

We don't all teach to the "test". I am so glad I am in the arts. Teaching to a "test" would be SUPER boring. The arts TRULY drive our students IQ. Don't get me wrong, memorization has its place. According to Bloom's Taxonomy, memorization is the lowest form of learning. To create is classified as the highest form of learning. To all those core teachers under the "testing" gun who employ creativity to make learning a little less dry, YOU ROCK! To all those who show up daily when things are hard- You also ROCK.

J Blank The reason I asked is because art and music is considered an elective in most schools, so I wasn't sure if it was an option or mandatory for you all to teach during this time. Initially, I couldn't think of a way Visual Arts could be utilized through virtual learning since its so hands on, and children may not have all of the needed supplies at home. Yes of course, fine arts is definitely important in the school system for sure!! I didn't mean to offend you, so I apologize if it came off as offensive. I actually have a Bachelor's degree in Visual & Performing Arts so if anyone is supportive of the arts, its me. Trust me, I was not trying to offend at all Lol. One day I will be a Performing Arts Coordinator/Specialist for an Arts Center. I taught voice and piano for a tiny bit after I graduated, so I defintely respect you as an arts teacher. I wish you the very best in your career, God bless!

Now I understand- students usually do not begin earning credit for art courses until high school. Their elementary and junior high school experience is designed to lay the foundation for a deeper study. Usually, students studying via the arts in high school are interested in art scholarships. This means they begin the production of a portfolio in 9th grade to present to recruiters, colleges, and universities. I acquired a degree in painting and one in drawing. I worked in the field, then studied to get my teaching certification. Performance art has always employed a fascinating collection of human behavior as tools. The variables are equally as vast as they are in the visual arena. Hopefully you will always remain creatively mobile. Thank you for your interest and time. God bless you as well.

Its always great to talk to someone that appreciates the arts field and value its importance! Thanks for your support, I certainly hope to stay creatively mobile as well! Take care!

FINALLY!!! Someone who is willing to REALLY tell the truth. Online teaching is SUCH a waste. Illinois is moronic enough to tell everyone that if a kid hands in something they get an A? Really, is that what we've become? Why dont we give them lollipops too for just signing on? There will never be a replacement for that one-on-one contact with students in class. Hell, what we are doing is no more than youtube direction videos for kids. This is NOT teaching, especially when there is no accountability. I hope and pray we get back into school and into a REAL classroom. And can someone please invent a pill so that when i hear terms like: "Teams, Google Docs, Virtual Learning, Online Teaching and especially SOCIAL DISTANCING (I know, has nothing to do with teaching)" I don't profusely vomit! :) :) :) :)

That’s how it was here at my school in Texas. If you did the work, even if you put no effort into it at all, you would get a 100. There were some kids writing answers that didn’t even pertain to the lesson, but because they had something, they automatically get a 100 due to our new district rules.

Omg. Amen brother! Why couldn’t the district or superintendent or whatever just give the kids an early summer? There’s a reason why some of us put our kids in school. It’s because we don’t have the time or patience to do the teachers’ job for them.

I'm so sick of having to hunt down parents to get to kids. I don't need to hear you in the background cursing out a fifth grader. On the bright side, now the parents don't believe their kids when they tell them I'm mean, because they see the actual session, and hear me in the background. I think one quote was, "Get the hell back in there, and stop playin', that poor white boy's tryna help you! Is this how you act in class?!"
