What is healing? | Shamini Jain | TEDxOrangeCoast

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. "Are you your own healer" says Shamini Jain, who invites us to discover the hidden possibilities of healing from a scientific and spiritual point of view.
Dr. Shamini Jain is a psychologist, scientist, and social entrepreneur. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UC San Diego, where she is also Chair of the Center for Integrative Medicine’s Research Committee. Dr. Jain is also the Founding Director of the Consciousness and Healing Initiative, a collaborative effort that links scientists, practitioners, entrepreneurs, and educators to facilitate personal and planetary healing through an understanding of consciousness and consciousness-based practices.
Dr. Jain conducts research in integrative medicine and psychoneuroimmunology, and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in this field. She has received several awards from scientific organizations for her work. Dr. Jain obtained her B.A. in Neuroscience and Behavior from Columbia University, and her Ph.D. degree from the SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. She conducted her clinical residency at the La Jolla VA Hospital/UCSD, and her post-doctoral fellowship at UCLA’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control Research.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Quantum physicists have demonstrated that everything is made of energy, including our bodies. Diseases, especially chronic conditions are due to energy blockages in the body. There is a documentary called Heal that shows how some terminally ill people healed themselves completely from stage 4 cancer and other problems. It's our consciousness that creates everything so we should really understand how consciousness works. 🤗😁💖

As an "energy healer" myself, and a Yogic practitioner, i can tell you we know very little scientifically about the enormous intelligence that our bodies carry. That's why they say - Science is an exploration of the spiritual world. But am glad that people like Jain are talking about it.

She is so articulate and has the perspective of a visionary. She is a light in the current darkness of the medical pharmaceutical industrial complex that has a reductionist approach which serves greed instead of health.

Well said. I love the combination of mindfulness and scientific terminology. I am a practitioner of SHEN therapy. SHEN complements every therapeutic modality I've explored, furthering healing by using chi (prana) from a practitioner's hands to relax and release deep bodily held constrictions from your past which have been blocking your awareness and limiting personal growth and in many cases causing or prolonging physical and/or emotional pain.

Jain explains Jainism and beautifully articulates key divides in how we may treat our own bodies in too gross of a manner. She asks us to ponder how is it that so many people do different things for healing the flu?, meaning there is not one method for wellness. Her points are worthy of sincere contemplation. I would like to hear more about some of the images that were presented in her talk.

However, I elected to heal myself with the help of a regular chiropractor and one who did energy work. The latter has remained my friend for the past 10 years, and I am committed to ways that naturally heal the body. Keep up your fantastic work! Namaste!

It's fascinating to me that people don't understand how medicine was formed, who formed it and why. Suffice it to say; drugs were the issue of the day back in 1890 and that is what got attention. When the AMA licensing was formed it was the corporations who owned the few, toxic drugs used in the day. They didn't want any competition so they closed all the schools that did not use drug therapy. This is our system of medicine. For all the docs, etc who want to be right and think they are doing good it is because 'real science' in medicine is based on only one thing; drug and surgeries. Just like the good doctor said. You couldn't be further from the truth. This TED Talk is close to understanding real healing; but far enough away that it will take years for people to really understand and use what works. She is heading in the right direction. I guess it twas ever thus. Whoever holds the licensing body brainwashes the rest of the world to believe in their form of medicine. NOTHING could be further from the truth. I've healed cancer twice without medicine after using medicine to try and heal it. All it did was poison me, rearrange my body, make me sterile at 35 and humiliate me. Modern medicine needs to let go of it's hold on information as truth. They are good at emergency medicine but that's about it. The people healing diseases are not in the medical profession. As one medical student told me recently, "We are taught that all we are trying to do is give a patient something less toxic than the disease they have". That's a hell of a thing to want to learn and use when it comes to healing. It's disgusting really. Makes me sick to my stomach. This is the attitude of medicine. Where as other healing modalities are concerned many of us actually get rid of the illness forever and we are the ones considered to be imbalanced. Medicine is off the mark. Admittedly it does not heal it barely manages with often horrendous side effects. Why do people believe in this crap? It's embarrassing that it is so accepted from seemingly intelligent people. I have no degree yet my work far surpasses western medicine.

I am continually dumbfounded by seemingly intelligent people believing in allopathic medicine. The past 3 years have been unbelievably disheartening to see the public naivete. So many will suffer the consequences of having faith in the pharmaceutical industrial complex. So sad.

We are beings of energy and light created in the image of the Infinite Creator. Our physical shell is simply a vessel for our temporary stay in this time. We have been given the gift of our my to ponder the Great Mystery. Many ancient cultures were not bound by preconceptions of what is impossible, but what is possible. We are capable of countless abilities that are yet to be discovered as long as our minds are open. Excellent talk! Thank you for your time Shamini!

Positive results from placebo surgery is something science and modern medicine will have a very hard time with. There is a connection between your health and your mind. How that connection functions can be studied but I think it goes way beyond our conscious capabilities to understand. It is good to accept its importance even if we do not understand it.

I think this is an important presentation for many reasons, but I would also sound a modest note of caution. There is much to be said for the healing power of connection (including for example even pets as well as connection with nature). Similarly, the health of individuals, communities & the planet in general is negatively impacted by disconnection & alienation. Ironically, the Internet which appears to have connected us more than ever has been responsible for an increase in anxiety, depression & suicide, especially in young women. This is a consequence of multiple factors, one being the lack of physical connection, tone of voice etc. As a health professional, I understand not only the importance of imparting compassion, but also the importance of adding the words, "I'm sure this (whatever treatment is prescribed) will deal with (the presenting issue). This belief in the treatment can account for at least half of the treatment effect - we know 'placebo' has a healing effect. My caution comes from leaning too far to one side or the other. While there is much to offer from traditional healing, there's also much to offer from 'western medicine. Depending on the issue, there is room for both - it is a mistake to isolate one at the expense of the other. A final note - we still very much have a sick system rather than a health system. While this is much less the case for alternative & holistic approaches, it's still the case that for example, it's estimated around half of the little funding for research into alternative therapies is focused on cancer treatment. With the introduction of a well-being economy in Scotland (to replace a GDP-motivated economy) funding shifted from expensive end-of-life treatments to early and middle wellness initiatives. We need more of this...

This runs contrary to almost everything modern science teaches us. Every so often we are confronted by some evocative thoughts that forces us to rethink of what we know and the status quo. This is such a time, in my opinion. We at least owe it to ourselves to at least investigate this possibility.
