Learn Dutch with us: In the new episode of Easy Dutch, we are asking people in the Netherlands what are they doing today.
Easy Languages is an international video project aiming at supporting people worldwide to learn languages through authentic street interviews and expose the street culture of participating partner countries abroad. Episodes are produced in local languages and contain subtitles in both the original language as well as in English.

It's okay, it could be that it's difficult to understand for you because the lady is from the southern province Brabant. I'm from there too and friends from other Dutch provincies have difficulty too sometimes to understand me because we might swallow words or "mumble" a bit more. I cannot speak for all people from Brabant, however. It's just to encourage you that it's normal that not everything will sound clear when your listening to day to day conversational speech of a language your learning; people tend to speak fast, mumble, use slang, etc. That's sometimes even hard to understand in your mother tongue, let alone in an unfamiliar language you're learning. Especially when people have an accent or use a dialect on top of that. So don't worry, I'm sure with hard work and listening practices it will get easier! Keep it up :)

Dutch is actually quite similar to English, because both languages don't underwent great shifts, unlike German, making Dutch sound very funny indeed! The English/Dutch 'v' is almost always a 'b' in German, e.p. evening/avond=Abend, 't'= 'ss', for example: 'eat' 'eten' = essen, cook/koken=kochen! Dutch is so interesting 😯😅

I’m learning Dutch at the moment bc I study here and I was wondering if a native could tell me if the people in this video had an accent/dialect. I noticed that I could understand less than I usually can and was wondering if that was the case because I really need to improve my listening skills or bc I’m just in contact with people that speak another dialect because I live in another part of the Netherlands or ofc it could also be that people only ever use easy language with me

Most of them sounded pretty standard, only two or three people had a clear local accent. Dutch (like English) can get really "muddy" at times and sometimes entire sentences are reduced down to three or four syllables in colloquial speech. Other languages like German are much more "staccato" in nature and are generally pronounced like they're written (more or less). I'm sure it'll get better with time. I would recommend watching some Dutch movies, but no one in their right mind would watch a Dutch movie ;)
