4:50 the period of light after the sun sets is called twilight. When the sun sets, the sky never becomes pitch black instantly. In my country we have one hour of twilight after the sun sets until the sky becomes pitch black. Apparently, in Svalbard they have two weeks of twilight until the sky becomes pitch black and the night finally sets in.

I live in the Northern U.S. very close to one of the Great Lakes and get kinda bummed by the winter darkness. The sunrise is technically around 7am but it doesn't feel like the sun is visible enough to drive without headlights until after 8am. Closer to 9am. Then it gets completely dark before 5pm. So we have less sunlight than darkness but, still, idk how I'd do with 24 hour darkness. I do love the winter in a lot of ways. It's so peaceful and quiet (we live in a rural area) with NO BUGS (I really hate bugs) and I HATE being hot so the cold is nice. But the lack of darkness, even taking vitamin D3 daily, kind of depresses me a bit. I realize I like the weather of the winter but not the darkness. Though it does feel super cozy with a wood fire going and a hot comfort meal around the holidays.

I am in Northern Illinois as well. And while it can be frigid in the midst of winter I have come to enjoy the cold weather much more than the hot summers. I was just thinking today how much more I enjoy my chores on my little farm at this time of year. The early sunsets don’t bother me much either. We find ways to make life more cozy. Fires, candles, warm drinks are essential. I remember my grandmother, who was born and raised in Harstad, would shake her head when people complained of the “short” days. I love your videos. They are so peaceful and stunning visually. It also, in some, ways connects me to my heritage. I love hearing the Norwegian and other Scandinavian languages.
