We got hit by a HURRICANE | Polar Night on SVALBARD, an island close to the North Pole

This week we had a Hurricane hit Svalbard with 85mph winds, 35m/s. We prepare our cabin for the storm and tell you how Longyearbyen prepares for a storm like this! I hope you like the video! :)

I watch in amazement. What a life you and Christoffer lead. I live in the Nevada desert by choice. We average around 108F - 115F during the summer months. People often ask me how we stand it, and always I give the same answer, you and your body adapt, and you learn to live around the climate conditions. During those months we do many things at night. The temperature doesn't drop much, but at least the sun isn't beating down on you. Having an A/C is a must in your home and your car. Then I watch you and wonder how you stand the cold. You seem to love living there as much as I love living here. I think I am in awe of your channel as it is so different, the life you have, over the life I have. I am so glad I found your channel. I read about it in an article in the Daily Mail. I am hooked! Thank you two so much for sharing. I really enjoy watching you!

You asked why you get so many storms this time a year. I’m from the Faroe Islands 🇫🇴 and we also get ALL those storms that you get as well. They come because of the Gulfstream current. The warm waters from the gulfstream, collide with the cold northern hemisphere, which gives us these crazy storms. We’re so used to them by now. I’ll go out as normal until it reaches 50 m/s. Then I’ll sit my arse back and wait it out. Our record is 83m/s. (Ps. That’s also why we don’t have any trees 🌲 in the Faroe Islands or Svalbard. I love you blog, it’s nice to get a glimpse into how you live.

🇨🇦 lol Here where I live in Ontario Canada, we have a one hr time change. We call it **Fall Back, **Spring ahead!**. I know that 1 hr really does affect me as funny as it seems, considering how it is for you's in Svalbard! Winter months that 1 hour, really does make a big difference to us. Going to work in the dark and 5:00 p:m, coming home in the dark. I know it must sound crazy to yous that most of us get all crazy because of that one hour but myself Cecilia, I like the darker evenings. To live in Svalbard I would think that a person would have to do a lot of visiting first to see how they would be able to thrive through the cold and the darkness. Although it is certainly one of the most beautiful places in the world, there would be a lot of adjusting to go through. Thank you both for the beautiful videos! 🙏🤗

My brother-in-law has a modern farmhouse that's on 55 acres of forested land in Ontario, Canada. The country kitchen has a large cast iron wood stove that's used for heating only. There's a large 1M x 1.5M vent hood directly above the stove (1/2M above) that collects the heated air and it connects to an exposed 12" insulated pipe-in-pipe galvanized spiral vent piping that distributes it to the living room then to the 4 bedrooms. The spiral piping has 2 variable speed fans that draw the heated air to the living room and bedrooms. There's supplementary electric baseboard heating but it's very rarely required. Large 1.5M low-speed ceiling fans push the heated air down at various locations.

Finally someone mentioned being tired more during midsummer than polar nights!! I haven't experienced this to such an extent as you there but living in Lithuania where we have no night in the summer and long dark hours in winter, I never thought I would feel worse in summer than winter. Also, there is a big importance of maintaining an evening routine during midsummer nights, to be able to 'unwind' and get ready for sleep!

Ah, I have a story for you! Lived on a houseboat 24/7 for 3 years in Ohio. We had a bad storm late fall - 60 MPH winds with pelting rain (and the temperature was around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, but it was the wind...the 50 foot boat was docked and tied off, but the stern line snapped in the middle of the night in those high winds. The boat was swinging wide and slamming into the dock again and again (steel hull against wood and concrete) - BAM, BAM, BAM! I could NOT pull the boat to the cleat with that broken line - it was now too short. I had to run to the marina and beg a couple of the guys to come help me. They happen to have a line and these two big, burly guys were able to wrangle my boat in and tie it off before I had a gash in the hull or a pulverized dock. Winds are scary and can do some really unpredictable things!

I sometimes wonder if I’m in an absolute minority in that I’m thrilled about such conditions. I’ve always loved being in extreme weather as long as I was somewhat sheltered. I lived by the sea for a few years and I would get excited when we’d get 60-70mph storms and everything would rattle and the wind howl through every crack in the windows. That was like a lullaby to me. Being in such a lovely, warm place such as your house, with total darkness outside and wind and snow belting on the outside, I’d love to experience that with my partner while sitting by the fire or being under the duvet in a cozy bed.

I've been through hurricanes, tornadoes and blizzards and they're all scary as hell. My poor dog gets scared if he hears thunder in the distance or if it's raining hard outside, so him in these extreme situations is a nightmare. Poor frightened Grim! I can imagine how scary that wind is to him. I"m glad the storm wasn't as bad as expected. Yay for the mountain offering some protection! You, Christoffer and Grim are badass for getting out in that weather, lol. If it gets too windy out here, we all stay inside and my dog potties on the bathroom floor.

Keeping you in my thoughts. We live in the upper Mid-west of the States and we experience blizzards. We also agree November is certainly our ‘transition’ month to winter too no doubt! I totally agree with winter mode. I honestly agree While I love the brighter light of spring, I’m sad to leave winter mode. I like Mother Nature interrupting the daily life mode. Especially when we get back to back to back storms and temps don’t hit sub-zero too long.🌨❄️☃️

I spent 40 years in WI and now live in SC. It’s funny how much the seasons do impact us. I added room darkening curtains to actually create cozy weather in the middle of the day during the height of summer. I was really curious about the average temps in Svalbard and was surprised to learn that the Gulfstream keeps the average lows above zero degrees F, even in February (on the western end). WI/upper Midwest (albeit shorter winters and more daylight), actually seems to have lower temperatures than western Svalbard. That surprised me. But those blizzards winds on Svalbard sound painful!
