This whale sculpture by Welzie was created for the Andaz Artist in Residence program. Here is what the process looked like from start to finish, well not including the making of the fiberglass molds in which the whale foam blanks were made. The process includes shaping basic whale shapes, big and small, then fiberglassing it and making a male mold from it. Next we fiberglassed a female mold off the Male.Then used pour foam to create a basic foam blank to shape the whale body. All the whale fins were cut, shaped, formed and fiberglassed to fit each whale. The Whales were then all Laminated with fiberglass and white pigment before they were painted with resin by welzie. Next the whales were "Hot Coated" coated again with clear resin which gets sanded before getting another clear layer of resin called the "Gloss Coat" finally the whales are polished out to a fine glossy shine. Welzie and his team built a hanging area to practice hanging the whale sculptures and placing them just right. After months of work the Welzie team installed the piece for the Artist in Residence Program at the Andaz Resort Maui. What a big project!
Welzie is a Maui art and the Artist in Residence at the Andaz Resort Wailea Maui. Specializing in surfboard foam, fiberglass and resin, Welzie creates fun and whimsical art inspired by the Hawaiian Islands. Welzie creates his artwork in his South Maui Art Studio and his Maui art gallery is located on the 5th floor of the Andaz Resort Wailea, Maui. Welzie has art collectors from all over the worlds and has had hi work shown in art galleries throughout Hawaii, as well as the US mainland and Japan.
Welzie enjoys the art coaching and art tips for beginning artist because he knows what its like to be an artists trying to make it in the art world. Welzie was fortunate to get some guidance from a fellow artist which helped get Welzie on a positive projection. Welzie Hopes to inspire and help the next generation of artist who just need a little help and guidance to learn the trade of being a professional artist.
