    @@CountryCowboy008 That's just the way it is with movies and stage - movie actors get more well-known. It's not Rita's fault, her huge talent deserved all the praise it's got and more. @@CountryCowboy008 not really unfair when we consider that we can only honestly praise what we have seen. Should we never praise anyone? Should Catherine Zeta-Jones give back her Oscar and not accept any praise because Chita Rivera was the original Velma Kelly? This isn't about "more credit" it is about being willing to praise a job well done without having to qualify it by pointing out that someone else did it first or better. I am reminded of recently watching a lovely gymnastic performance by a young lady and the commentators spent the entire time talking about Simone Biles instead. It was a horrible thing to do. Everyone deserves their time in the sun without being compared to those who came before.

Are there some things I liked better in the old movie, yes. But same with the new one. Each one is unique in its own way. The critics are wrong about the 2021 version, it is wonderful. If all you are going to do is compare it to the old movie than don't see it. They are not the same film! 2021 Great lighting, cinematography, THE ORCHESTRA, the acting, the singing, and the dancing!! All were great! This cast and crew definitely gave 100% and it's really sad that people who haven't even given a chance are trashing it. As for those complaining about Ansel's dancing.....he literally dances twice. Hardly at all. The Spanish that is spoken, very easy to see/feel the emotion and what they are saying. Especially if you've seen the older movie. Don't listen to the reviews. See it for yourself!

    I never thought I'd say it, but I also prefer the cinematography in the older movie! The colors, and, like you say, the helicopter shots give more of a big city feel. Imagine that achievement in 1961. Plus they had Rita Moreno. BUT I'm still hoping for a better Tony in this one. And there might be some wide/aerial shots, although the new one (so far) looks too much like it's on a set. The strong colors seem a bit artificial.

    First, Matt, this is very well done and so interesting to see! I'm a big fan of the original film and of the original musical, but I'm also very excited to see the new film. It is an adaptation of the musical as opposed to a remake of the original film, as others have shared, but there is obviously still a lot of overlap! The original is a wonderful film and a classic, but I do think there are several good reasons to make this film, especially 60 years later: to introduce it to a new audience, to see this through the eyes of one of the best directors of all time, to incorporate more from the actual musical, to include actors who are doing their own singing, and to cast Latino/Latina actors who aren't in brown face. Natalie Wood was lovely and such a talented actress, but I always felt that she was miscast as Maria. Her singing (and Tony's) were dubbed the entire time, she was playing a Puerto Rican in brown face, and had an absolutely terrible accent. She's very moving despite all of this, but still. Rita Moreno is what makes the original for me (and I'm very excited she's in this version too!) Yes, Hollywood relies too much on unnecessary remakes and we need more original creative content from them. But I don't think this is one of those cases. We'll see!

  • @rebeccag8589

    @rebeccag8589

    @@lornam1142 The original is fairly true to the musical, so yes, the new film will also be very similar to the original film. Not every film should be remade, of course, but this one is such a classic and I do think it deserves to be remade. Brownface over the course of the 60s, when the film was made, was already increasingly unacceptable. And it's poorly done in the film at that. They did it to Rita, even though she's Puerto Rican (and the only one from the film who was!) My opinion is there are so many talented actors who can also sing and dance, whether they are from theater or film. Many of my favorite classic musicals dubbed because they wanted a big name who couldn't sing (and we definitely see that still sometimes ie Russell Crowe). But we can have films today, and do, without any huge names based solely on whether they can do the work for the role and actually act, sing and dance. Only a few did the dubbing for old Hollywood so what you end up with is a lot of voices in these musicals that sound quite similar and don't always match the actor, which can be very distracting (like Marni Nixon dubbing for Audrey in My Fair Lady). Judy Garland, Julie Andrews and Shirley Jones didn't need a dubber and I think if you're going to cast someone in a musical when there is so much talent out there, they should be able to actually sing :)

    Just what we all needed, a frame-for-frame remake, brilliant. Everyone's so quick to forget what a great filmmaker Robert Wise was (edited Citizen Kane, Directed The Sound of Music, and The Sandpebbels to name a few), and how fantastic the cast and crew were on this 1965 masterpiece. Perhaps Speilberg will add some touches but this is an adaption of a Broadway musical with little latitude for story changes or slick camera moves. It is good to see a fresh version of a wonderful musical but let's not get carried away because Speilberg is directing. I doubt anyone will ever top what Wise accomplished with this film and we're most likely to see a digital version of what was brilliant long before Spielberg came onto the scene. What's next, a remake of The Sound of Music? Pleeease!

    I actually wouldn't mind a remake of The Sound of Music with the Baroness' motivation properly restored. She dumped him because he wasn't willing to go along with the Nazis and she wasn't willing to go down with him. See "There's No Way to Stop It" for further details.

    It’s impossible to not think of Les Demoiselles de Rochefort by Jacques Demy with all these colors and the happy vibes from this new shooting of “America” in the remake. I’m anticipating a lot now. I’m pretty sure Spielberg decided to shoot this iconic number outside under the Sun in order to make a Jacques Demy reference of the Demoiselles, the yellow dress immediately reminded me of it.

    The original 1957 Broadway production of “West Side Story” had *white Italian-American* actress Carol Lawrence (born Carolina Maria Laraia) play the Puerto Rican Maria. Yes it was a different time, but that’s not an excuse. Thankfully the three subsequent Broadway revivals of “West Side Story” had Maria being played by a Latina actress: *Josie De Guzman (an American actress of Puerto Rican descent) in 1980; Josefina Scaglione (an Argentinian actress) in 2009; and Shereen Pimentel (an American actress of Jamaican and Puerto Rican descent) in 2020.* No one complained about the revivals having a Latina woman playing Maria, as opposed to a white, non-Latina woman playing Maria. Why is it any different with the 2021 movie musical remake, casting Rachel Zegler (an American actress of COLUMBIAN descent) as Maria? Look, I love the 1961 film “West Side Story”. It’s a masterpiece. The cinematography. The lighting. The dancing. The sets. The costumes. The fight choreography. The music. All gorgeous and epic! BUT I’m not going to deny that when it comes race representation, it’s problematic in terms of forcing white, non-Latino actors to employ brownface, and whitewashing Maria (yes Latinas can be white, but instead of casting a light skin Latina to play her, they instead cast a white Russian-American woman to play the Puerto Rican Maria). Heck, even the Puerto Rican Rita Moreno was forced to wear brownface in the film because the makeup artist didn’t realize that Latinos could also be white: www.huffpost.com/entry/rita-morenos-shocking-anecdote-about-her-west-side-story-makeup_n_58764c9fe4b03c8a02d44d67 The remake doesn’t *need* to exist, but I can understand if they did it to rectify the racist elements of the original. The 2020 Broadway revival of “West Side Story” was a travesty, but it didn’t ruin “West Side Story” for me because the original still exists, through the 1961 film and the soundtrack of the original 1957 Broadway cast: tokentheatrefriends.com/2020/09/04/what-happens-to-west-side-story-when-you-remove-race/ . The 2021 remake can’t be any worse than the 2020 Broadway revival (at least the remake didn’t cut the song “I Feel Pretty”; yes that really happened in the 2020 stage revival).
