► Check out more on Team Yankee here: www.beastsofwar.com/game/team...
We sat down with Battlefront Miniatures to introduce the world and geopolitical situation of Team Yankee.
John is joined in the studio by Chris to discuss what makes Team Yankee one of the standout modern wargames of the last decade. Building on the novel of the same name, the game explores the military consequences of the Cold War breaking into a global conflict in the 1980s. From the Middle East to Europe Battlefront Miniatures have been expanding this corner of alternate history as the 21st century continues to heat up.
What would be your ideal scenario to explore in Team Yankee?

The book 'Team Yankee' was written by Harold Coyle, a former US Army tank commander, who in turn based his book on 'World War Three: The Untold Story' by General Sir John Hackett. Coyle went on to write a series of books based around several hotspots between the US and the former Soviet Union, including Egypt, Iran and the former West Germany.

I would add Red storm Rising and WWIII: the untold story By Gen Sir John Hackett on which most of these books use as the background, As well there is a book "Red Army" which is done from the Russian perspective and "First Contact" which started as a training manual for the Canadian Armed Forces.

Harold Coyle is a wargamer, I played a few games with in Northern Virginia circa 2002-2003. We played Lord of the Rings and also a 18th Century horse and musket game called Warfare in the Age of Reason.

It would be nice if the new plastics made it into Tanks - Modern Age but GF9 seem to have forgotten about that game. Seeing TY / WW3 expand into Pacific Rim countries would be great as well.

I didn't read Team Yankee, but the release of this game did get my interested in WWIII stuff. I did read the Armageddon's Song series by Andy Farman, and the Red Storm series by James Rosone. Both of which were set much newer, in a new Cold War setting, and kind of scary.

With regards to source books, I would also recommend General Hackett's two books - The Third World War, and The Untold Story. Harold Coyle set TY within Hackett's universe (to an extent). I agree that Chieftains is a brilliant, if bleak book.

I love the look of Team Yankee and being an FoW player it definitely appeals, however, the thing that puts me off is that my intention would be to play Soviets. The issue with this being that to assemble a Soviet force with what is available at the moment (and even for the foreseeable) it will cost me at twice as much as a NATO player to get into the game. This disparity in entry pricing simply doesn't exist in FoW (at least to my knowledge) and it's very off putting. Finally from battle reports I've seen the game seems to descend into "parking lots" (that's a quote from various sources) which also detracts from the immersion. Hopefully the new Soviet book later in the year will go some way to fixing this but at the moment this game is a definite no go. It maybe anecdotal but from the community stats I've seen it definitely appears as though the Warsaw Pact forces have a steep entry barrier creating a significant difference in player population in terms of faction. I raised these concerns with my local community and simple response from a number of them was that they also spotted this issue but they went NATO despite this simply due to their affordability compared to the Warsaw forces.

I played as soviets and gave it up, parking lot is part of it. Ironically, soviets are sort of a one trick pony. If you build against certain forces they have as much gear as you, but are markedly better (Think west Germans). Models are nice, the rest........

It looks interesting, but for my part, I prefer the Armageddon song books by Andy Farman as my source for inspiration beyond Harold Coyle, especially for my Baor army. For the American forces that includes US Marine forces Martin Archers series equally hold the source for inspiration. Once again these are available on kindle/Amazon. Tight roles for those enthusiasts. For the Soviet player, a book by Russell Phillips The Bears Claws a novel of World War 3, is in my mind worthy of reading.

While I have my Warsaw pact force (Iran) and my NATO force (Canada), I am curious to see if battlefront will ever include the Asian countries like japan and china. Hell, if the cold war had gone hot it's likely North Korea would have nearly wiped out south in as little as 30 days so those could be added in.

Going to have to get this book. Some views in NATO ( heard in S.H.A.P.E. Belgium late 70's) were based on Soviet invasion, then pre emptive Nuclear reprisal. During that time British stratagy seemed based on actually planting forests in West Germany ( B.A.O.R bases in Germany) to restrict Soviet Armour, As for defence, Netherlands and Denmark, seemed only want to defend at thier boarders. It was openly questioned if the Soviets attacked Turkey in the rear would Greece help ? There was alot of resentment towards British armour and Airforce exercises by the Germans. France had withdrawn from NATO, but expected to join in defence. So now as then , only the U.S was overspending in Defence of NATO. This is one of the few things President Trump has legitimate cause to question ? Given the rise in Nationalism and Trade policies can we trust Germany, now united, to step up and shoulder more military responsibility ? Not very optomistic , yet interested in this stratagy game. Hide soapbox.

No point on playing a modern warfare wargame played like napoleonic wars with lines of tanks glued together. If that's fixed at some point you will have my attention. Talking about baddies and goodies in a semi historical wargame is also discouraging.

You can run infantry/mech infantry heavy lists with plenty of AT missiles. I think when the first ed of team Yankee came out everybody went for tank heavy forces, and that trope stuck. And, in the Team Yankee setting, the USSR are the "baddies" or at least, the antagonists. Remember the whole "Red Menace" thing between the 50s and late 80s. Do remember it's still a "fictional" game and you can still have fun/enjoy it :)

There are people that are using the TY rules at 6mm scale. This alleviates the whole parking lot look of the tank heavy forces and the weapon ranges seem to work better.

@@viperseven1922 the problem is with this idea in 15mm itll still look like a carpark. To get rid of that you would either to play on a larger board (something I do in FoW (10ft by 8ft)) or play in 6mm
