Watch journalists confront German government over ban on Yanis Varoufakis and Palestine Congress

Watch journalists confront the German government over its ban of Berlin's Palestine Congress and the entry ban on people like Yanis Varoufakis. Why were devoted Jewish, Palestinian, and German peace activists unjustly labelled as 'Islamist and antisemitic'?
Journalists: "No antisemitic statements were made at the Palestine Congress."
German Government: "The ban on the Palestine Congress was justified and essential. We do not tolerate antisemitic or Islamist crimes."

Effing politics. This is not about DIEM, BSW, die Linke or any other political party. This is about German and generally Western complicity in the crime of genocide. Legally, you don't have to wait for the final rulings of ICJ, or that the corrupt ICC does the right thing. Read the Genocide Convention, it concerns all citizens, not just public officials. If Yanis really means what he says, that Europeans are complicit in Genocide and you agree with him (I do) then the right conclusion is to turn yourself to judicial officials, plead guilty to complicity on the grounds of citizenship, admit your guilt and ask a court of Law of your state to punish you according to the Genocide Convention. Better choice than following the example of Aaron Bushnell, IMHO. If you like, you can think of it as "Gandhian obedience" and make it a public mass action. Even better, you can think of it as an collective act of self-healing from the ancestral trauma of committing a genocide, so that the festering collective trauma does not repeat itself in this current of any other form.

I agree with the coward part. And, indeed, this is how everything started in Germany in the 1930s. I don't think these officials are not afraid of anything - yet. But when the tide turns, and it will, these jerks will be out of power, and hopefully tried for complicity in war crimes.

don't get me wrong, that is appalling, but this way of framing as if there were a "right side of history"... who were the "right" ones? the US, UK and France? they were and are all colonial, genocidal empires that didn't do any better than what the Germans did, really. Now because they fought the Germans, won, and liberated the Jews and exposed all the Nazi atrocities, doesn't in the least exempt them of their own crimes, which to be honest were more frequent and widespread than the German genocides.

It's clear that they hate and disdain the people standing against genocide, for standing against genocide, and have no issues whatsoever with deliberately misrepresenting them. Whether that's based on the government's lack of morals, or lack of cognitive abilities, is still unclear. But the safest bet is "both".

I find it much more useful to concentrate on nations such as they are before our eyes, today. The Vikings did some ghastly things 1000 years ago, their present-day descendants in Scandinavia not so much, indeed, they are overwhelmingly different in outlook. So it would not be any more useful or relevant to bring up past Viking transgressions, than it is to dust off every ancient grievance that ever was against any country today, like Spain or Ireland. The latter have favorably evolved radically, not guaranteed to be permanently - nothing ever is - but that’s more than one can say for Germany or certainly far, far more than one can say for its rabid protégé, Israel, neither of which knows, by and large, which way is up when it comes to ethics.

It’s definitely more of a tragedy than a laughing stock. Germany has never actually evolved from its inner impulses that gave us Nazism in the first place, so this current spate of censorship is just a sampling of its ongoing rot and sociopolitical stagnation rather than some kind of return to a previous state. The frightened, hesitant tone of the journalists was jaw-droppingly pathetic.

Angela Merkel said that the great thing about the internet is that her party can present their view without having to acknowledge the opposition, like they have to at this conference for example. Or on TV. She also said that the internet is terra incognita. Obviously she didn't understand it at all. And also, that it is illegal for a party to be its own news agency. Nicholas Negroponte said that the internet may be instrumental to world peace. Because here people come together who are marginalised and can be heard. Mothers discussing the homework of their children, people sharing recipes, programmers sharing solutions to common problems, sexual deviants discussing their fetishes, but also political minorities sharing their experiences, and enemy aliens sharing their homefront. We see each other as people based on our shared interests, regardless of where in the world we are, more so than people who just happen to vote in the same elections. The flip side is that there are financial interests amplifying some voices over others.
