I had that same GE, but with more knobs and the white console. It only lasted us two years. It was noisy and it was behind a closed laundry room door. We are looking at buying the SPEED Queen. Thanks Kirk for the demonstration.

so well the clothes are gone

This was a good day in washing machine racing. With both of them being white and using the same water supply, I found it hard to focus on the winning washer. But I have to tell you, it was very relaxing and I want to thank all the sponsors.. You Hear Me

Things I noticed; The speed Queen's drum is smooth. No friction = no cleaning action. The SQ's drum is stationary. i.e. doesn't move at all. The GE'sa drum not only rotates back and forth but has those gentle concave 'bubbles' alond it's walls. Again action-reaction. Not sure what the engineering of it was but the GE seems to have put thought and R&D into what the agitator is doing as opposed to the SQ's simple chucke-chucke all time repetition. Would have been maybe more productive to have same-soiled cotton and synthetic towels in each for end result and especially without soap.

How were you able to get the SpeedQueen to work with the lid open?

I have that model Speed Queen I love it.

Is this wash race? I've never seen top load washer wash races.

I have a question about the Speed Queen TC500. When the washer fills up for the wash cycle and the rinse cycle, does it fill up to a certain level (regardless of time) or does it fill up for a certain amount of minutes? I have low water pressure and was wondering if this machine would work for me.

I'm almost positive they fill to a certain level. I don't have great water pressure either, but my (former, died Sat) Kenmore always did great, filled enough for the setting!

Fills to a certain level. I don't have great water pressure either, but my TC5 does great in filling. And it fills up FAST!! I love that! If you put it on Eco mode, though, it won't fill for the rinse, it'll just spray the clothes as they spin. I keep mine on Regular mode for that reason. Also, if I'm washing my bedspread, I press the Deep Fill button. A tip that I learned from a SQ tech -- if you're mid-cycle & wish you'd chosen the settings differently, you can press the On/Off button & just hold it down until it goes through two beeps. That cancels everything & you can then start from scratch & change the settings however you'd like.

The speedqueen needs larger agitation and ribbed counter rotating wash basin imo

The one issue with Speed Queen is the wash cycles are not very long. The timer starts counting down through the fill cycle by the time the washer fills 3-4 minutes are eliminated from agitation time.

I wondered about that too, but I checked the one my dad has and that's part of the cycle time. Fortunately, it will stop the countdown after 3 minutes have passed if the unit is still filling up.

I bought the TC5, & trust me, the shorter cycles are not a problem. I'd still rather have my 22 y.o. Kenmore washer back, if it could've been repaired, but the TC5 is WAY better than the GE that I bought & returned the same day. Hated the grinding noise it made, hated the slow agitation, hated the lid lock.

Im stuck on the 1 cfoot tub size difference. Can you wash a queen siz sized comforter in the SQ?

In the GE both the tub and the agitator are moving, in the Speed Queen just the agitator moves. The wash action on the GE is way too aggressive for most clothes. I would only wash 🧦 and 🩲 or 👖 in the GE machine! Speed Queen 👑 for the WIN!!! 🏆

After buying 2 high efficiency paper weights I bought a traditional SQ in 2017. It was way faster; the dingy underwear I put in it looked like they came new out of the package in one run. It used way less soap - the machine could pay for itself in 3 years on detergent savings alone. Unfortunately when I sold the house the Queen went with it. Got a GE now (came with my current house) and it’s ok, but you let it miss one step and I’m going to get another traditional Speed Queen (not that high efficiency piece of junk).

This test shows nothing at all. These both suck and have SO MANY ISSUES.

@@Blurain727 A couple of those GEs destroyed 3 of my ol' BMW Motorrad shirts that are no longer in production. I wish I can sue the people responsible for this piece of crap but people would defend GE. 🙄 🙄🙄🙄 I have since sold the thing for pennies and it better be glad I didn't kick it down the steps of my front porch.

The majority of the comments here are pro SQ. However I think I will go with the GE for the extra room for king size comforters. I like the agitator better also.

Have the GE set now and love it. There's only one thing I didn't like, the dryer buzzer was too loud but super easy 1 min buzzer disconnect and problem solved.

That is an illusion mostly. Notice how the GE uses less water. Youmight fit the comforter in better however I argue the SQ will actually clean it better. Once it's soaked, it will fit in the SQ better in the SQ. That said, I would highly recommend you to simply visit a good laundromat a couple times a year for really big, heavy and bulky items. It will clean them better.

Speed Queen is better built

I would prefer the Speed Queen TC5 model. American made and built like a tank!!!

GE appliances are made with Chinese parts have seen made in china parts in midern whirlpool washers as well

I would have gotten a speed queen but this model that the store had was only a 3.2cu and i wanted something with a larger capacity. They had other SQ's but they were all 3.2. We haven't had a working washer for a few months i have a baby and i need to wash alot soti got another brand

I bought the TC5 (closer to the older machines that I loved), & I haven't had a problem at all with the 3.2cf size. When I wash my king size quilted bedspread, I just press the Deep Fill button & it does great.

the ge washer should been set to high level or max...but if i would give both a try...

It's really amazing to me that, if you put the GE on it's longest wash cycle, it takes longer to do a load. I never would have thought of that and, judging by the comments, neither would anyone else.

My family had a GE of that kind and it worked for 7 years the. All the sudden the tub rusted even though we don’t use fabric softeners and it leaked a bunch of water it also went unbalanced so speed queen for me it’s better

I agree!! I HATED the GE that owned for one day. I had them come back & pick it up. Took too long, made the most annoying sound -- GRUNK...GRUNK....GRUNK... -- took too long to fill & wash, didn't get cat hair out of blankets well. I ended up buying the SQ TC5, & except for a few points, I love it! I'd rather have my 22 y.o. Kenmore back, but that's not an option, sadly. Well, if I find one like it on Marketplace & it works great, I'll buy it & sell the TC5.

Nothing beats that SQ wash action.

GE was more aggressive but I agree- I would prefer the TC5. It will be gentler on clothes even if it does not turn them as much. You can put fine clothes that are more clean on/near the top.

I mean, a front load machine's wash action is still superior. Only enough water to saturate clothes keeps detergent concentration high and tumbling ensures all articles are evenly mixed, agitated and in contact with water and detergent is the reason front loaders always outperform top loaders in reviews and testing of cleaning performance.

@@MatthewJames-st5wv That's why you get one with an integrated heater - every single customer I've sold a WM4k, 5.5k, 6.7k etc that I've been able to follow up with has had exactly zero buildup, one with only what the user claimed was "once or twice" use of a sanitize/tub clean cycle. I'm pretty convinced this is the reason why, despite top loaders not even *existing* in any other developed country, mold and mildew is basically never even thought about let alone a common complaint - other markets feed their machines only cold water, so a 60+ degree C wash is a nearly universal feature. Ever see underneath the agitator on some of the top loader teardowns? That much water in a vessel that only sees turbulence around the edges of the wash basket leaves an *actual* mound of dirt and sh*t around the agitator driveshaft! You're right about the need for a change in habits though, something that american market consumers are *not* known to be keen on. lol

​@@MatthewJames-st5wv Very true statement. Modern front loaders circulate clothes through what is essentially a germ infested mud puddle after ten minutes or so of washing . Clothes may get wet but not flushed. The argument about concentrated detergent comes from those who do not understand how laundry detergent works. The more concentarated a detergent is, the more anionic surfectants and nonionic surfectants it contains. Much more water is needed to flush it away not less. It is more harmful for fabrics. Fabrics wear out faster when strong detergent is used, and fade faster too. Concentated filthy water expelled from high efficiency washers is much worse for the environment than diluted water from a normal washer. Seriously people need to lighten up about water usage in washers. None of the water used is left permenently polluted. All modern detergents are biodegradable. Water discharged from washing machines is less contaminated and more easily purified than pool water is.

I wonder if the GE washer has a lid lock, & he overrode it somehow. I HATE lid locks, which is why I'm looking to buy the SQ TC5. (And I hate electronic beeping noises & pauses!) Wow, the SQ filled up WAY faster! Wonder why the GE slows down at around the 25 min mark. Then speeds back up. Again around 34 min or so. And that one didn't even spin the first time till the 37 min mark? Hands down, Speed Queen for me!! THANK YOU for this comparison!!!

@@skrcountryball81 I will say, though, that I did buy a SQ TC5. While I love that the lid doesn't lock, & I love that I never have to turns knobs to turn it on -- just press a button -- & I love that it gets the job done so quickly.....I would take my 22 y.o. Kenmore washer over the TC5 any day of the week. THAT was a GREAT washer! It had more agitator speeds, even a very agressive one, which got cat hair out of blankets better than the TC5, which doesn't have a very aggressive agitator speed. If I could buy a refurbished Kenmore washer like the one I had -- with both a detergent dispenser & fabric softener dispenser, I would sell this TC5 & buy the old refurbished one. The industry has ruined washers, in my opinion. And make no mistake, I watch the FB Marketplace page regularly to try to find an older Kenmore.

funny to see people arguing over washers, cant we agree that some washer are best for one thing and the other is best for another, there isnt an excact winner, each person likes each washer

GE is more aggressive so it will be harder on clothes. SQ has a better suspension and the machine rocks less and go off balance less. SQ uses more water which will help to clean better. Tub size is an illusion if said tub does not fill with water.

@@MicklowFilms Interesting. I am surprised. Most of these modern machines use a drop of water. My SQ can use up to around 289 gallons. The clothiers are fully soaked. So in the GE, you are saying that ALL the clothes are completely under water? The SQ I have does not lock the lid so I can stop it anytime by raising the lid and letting them soak, an hour or two. Close the lid and it resumes. Awesome feature and machine. I can do an entire load in 30 minutes. TIP: Always shut off the water valves when you are done doing laundry. I added a couple of color 1/4 valves which make it much easier than the full twist that was on there. I had to get adapters. I leave the twist valve open all the time.

​@@randomhobbiest5562 Not just the water, but the cost to boil all the reamining water out of the clothes after they've been lazily spun in a 700 rpm top loader compared to a 1,300 rpm front loader is going to cost orders of magnitude more.

The GE on the left was my old one in my old apartment but I think it was a newer one

The ge has way better agitation than i thought. Too bad the stacked model in my apartment broke after 1 use. Speed queen tc5 for the win

@@helencosta4234 not necessarily. Im not saying this particular model is shit. I AM saying the unit in my apartment I was issued broke after 1 use. I am VERY picky when it comes to this type of thing, so I personally will never give that particular GE a second chance. GE is not a bad brand, bit that particular model for me is permanently ruined due to my personal experience. Lemons will do that to you

You don't provide any evidence to back up your claim about SQ being "bullcrap." I've owned both, and the most recent GE only lasted a couple years. My first SQ lasted 17 yrs, and the current one is over 10 years old. Zero issues and gets the clothes clean.

Not as good as SQ that is for sure. Just look at the excessive tub movement in the GE. That means it can go out of balance easier. It likely also has a plastic outer tub. SQ is metal.

It is FAR superior to a petroleum product that is used because it is cheaper to make and increases profit margins. You sound like someone with a plastic tub who is trying to justify your poor decision. Our new SQ is simply amazing- best washer we ever owned. Everyone else says the same. Not one person ever complained of rust. Our old plastic one was NASTY when we opened it up. Bacteria sticks to plastic and grows. Why do you think most pans, knives and kitchen materials like salad bowls are made of stainless steel? You are too proud to agree with me but deep inside you know I am right.

Speed Queen all the way, don't buy into that HE (high efficiency) BS, I want clean cloths. Sometimes I have to run my HE machine twice.....doubling the time to properly clean the clothes. SQ machine was done is 41 minutes, for the next 20+ minutes that load could be in the dryer halfway dry or done drying.

OK, now I get it. I thought you were being serious with your replies, until I read this one. Dryers, especially Speed Queen, do NOT take over 3 hours to dry a load. Nonsense.

The SQ was the quickest

GE takes so much longer. I can do 2 loads in the SQ over the GE.

Poor comparison if using different amounts of water. Any agitator will splash harder in less water making it look like it's stronger. I would have liked to see how they compare fairly in same amount of water. The GE took an hour to wash a load. Yikes. If a load is heavily soiled it's better to do a pre-soak and rinse/drain or a mini wash first otherwise you have clothes washing in heavily soiled water for an hour.

Speed Queen yay. GE. nay.

Speed queen hands down.
